Stuff Canteen

Kitchen Transportation Core Executive Dining area Restroom Cleaning Area The space distribution mode of canteen seats not only satisfies 400 people, but also distributes in the space in the way of "regional group", making the tight dining space no longer rigid; At the same time, the layout of this group division area is like the texture of an urban street, so we named each area after a famous place. On the one hand, it increases the activity of the canteen, and on the other hand, the names of these areas make it convenient for employees to communicate and agree on seats.

/ Problem Statement/

Aging in place (AIP) is a retirement option where old adults choose to stay at home and receive old-age caring. Most Chinese senior citizens choose to stay at home after retirement. AIP is the predominant way of retirement in China. However, an ordinary modern Chinese home is not necessarily designed for elders to retire in. Due to elders reduced physical strength and ability when a home is not designed for AIP, people who are aging in place would only be able to do static activities like physical exercise, which is too little for their health.

Moreover, an old-age-unfriendly home may also cause serious injuries to elders. It is also important for seniors to plan ahead to prepare for aging at home. Thus, it is crucial to make homes have the space that allows elders to exercise safely. Through

analysis of some Chinese retired people’s behavior and needs, this thesis uses interior design theory to outline a design that could change a regular apartment into a suitable home environment for elders to age in place. The design is a prototype apartment which can change in three different stage bases on senior’s need.

Function

Modular is the main concept here to respond to the problem of the aging society and to adapt to the

changing behaviors of the senior citizen. There are three main zones of the apartment; divided by the privacy preferences. Then, create the circulation to achieve a wandering path. Functions are prepared for the demand change. Fixed the service functions into the service core. The other functions could be changed by different stages. Space consists of three units which are the service core in the central and privacy zone and public zone. A 600mm grid was used to arrange the wall, floor, and ceiling. The walls can replace with folding doors. Designers can customize their own wall panels, floors, and ceilings to meet elderly's requirement of expressing individual. This space is a vague border between in and outside by bringing natural elements into the interior space. Bring the natural elements into the interior environment is a guideline theory to make a restorative space. This project aims to cooperate nature and elderly to create an active space, so nature here is not only bringing the natural elements into space but also the activity of gardening that make the elderly more active.

DESIGN CONCEPT

/Design Statement/ According to the research findings, this thesis project proposes that there is a need for a residential prototype for the growing retiring senior base on the research of their activities.

The prototype is based on the residential apartment in which many China citizens are living. Their apartment should be a space that not only considers the convenience of their daily life, but also helps them to think about their future life problems and keep them more active and healthy. The design strategy aims to give a simple and effective solution to solve the current problems and to improve the condition of habitability of aging housing by taking into account in the design the two dynamic activities they like most: gardening and walking.

STAGE 1_BASE MODE

Stage 1 is the base mode of this aging in place apartment

model. It is designed for the elderly couple who still in an energy and health condition. They will invite friends to gather in the living room. Their children or grandchild might come and visit. Space consists of three units which are the service core in the central and privacy zone and public zone. Geratic furniture is chosen to prepared the following life. It should be easy to move to the next stage. Compared to the typical apartment layout, it is important to create a personal interest zone to support developing interest.

STAGE 2_ENHANCE THE PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE While the health condition of one elderly is changing or their lifestyle become different which would impact each other, the home is ready to change into stage 2 layout. Bedroom unit is spacious enough to arrange an individual bed for each other. Simply changes the furniture by lining up with the gird of the wall panel. The living room is suggested to move to the multi-function room and set apart the loop circulation around the kitchen and dining center. More indoor exercise space is provided to motivate active behaviors. This also prepared for the emergency situation for the stretcher go through.

STAGE 3_SPIRITUAL SUPPORTED

Continue developing custermized wall system give users abilities to choose. Plants and memory will growth by time and give them emotional and spirtual support.

STAGE 3_SPIRITUAL SUPPORTED Stage 3 is providing a hospice type care which is more focus on spiritual and emotional feeling with the environment. Since the elderly in this stage will spend more time in the bed. Bedroom in this stage is integrating the living area and sleeping area, so visitors and caregiving can give enough company with elderly. Multifunction room in this stage could be a seconder bedroom for an elderly spouse, or it could be a room for the caregiver. Using round curves and soft shape creating an intimate and trusting life. The establishment thus turns into a nurturing space, and such space generates emotions. Modular wall panels can be changed to glass that accesses a wide view to outside.

Half & Half Date: Spring 2018 Project Type: Commercial ‘ Ketword:Third place | Lifestyle | sub-culture Half&half is a commerical project based on research of millennials' lifestyle. To provide a third place for them to work and relax base on the trendy of working style that more and more people work as a freelancer. The concept of the chameleon is an interpretation of how well young people today adapt to changing environment.
