OWNTOWN DETROIT
Downtown Detroit is deserted. But it has a great potential to be vitalized again.
Phase One : A Green City
Phase one mainly dealt with city planning. Based on the analyses about natural resources, transportation, buildings, history, existing development plan and existing urban planning code, detroit will be a perfect place to live, work, hang out and tour.
Instructor : David Barbarash Site Size : 3,800,000 sq.ft Site Location : Downtown Detroit Skills : Auto CAD Adobe Photoshop&Illustrator Sketchup
The design concept is Creating A Green City. This concept is conveyed by connecting people and people, people and nature through urban planning approch.

Site Analyses
Site Problem Analysis Downtown Detroit is full of historical buildings. They shall be reserved. Meanwhile, they should be involved in citizen’s daily life. Too many vacant buildings! They could have served for citizens. They should be office, museum, and restaurant and so on.
The city is not pedestrian friendly. The walking experience is awful.

DOWNTOWN DETROIT
After the urban planning phase, the downtown Detroit is ready to provide a new convenient and comfortable living and working environment for citizens and fantastic tour experience for visitors.
Phase Two : The Future City
Instructor : David Barbarash Purdue HLA : LA 416 Landscape Arichtectural Design Site Location : Downtown Detroit Skills : Auto CAD Adobe Photoshop&Illustrator Sketchup [ Individual Work ] Let’s party here! There would be parade, concert and farm market!
The future light rail.
The urban design phase mainly dealt with three open spaces planed by the first phase. These three open spaces unified the whole site. Considering the site location, the context buildings’ function, the main use of the site, the designs would provide people the best way to live and have fun. The designs are bridges between nature and individuals.
It is creative to use the white pavement pattern to connect the park, driveway and the festival island together.
Flower Cherry Tree Stadium In The Background And Ginkgo Tree. There would be a great places for picnic.

Triangle flowe trellis used the same shape of the site. It will provide visual intersting in both winter and summer.
Steps to the bridge and indoor food court. People could sliding down from the top of the adjacent sloping lawn.
Extending the park pavement to the driveway so that people will feel safer and the driver will have the consciousness to reduce the car speed.
View 1 View 2 The structure is part of landscape architecture. It would be a food court. It guarantees the year round use of the site. The trees would grow into the structure. They will create interaction between indoor activities and the nature. The structure would have transparent material, so the trees have sufficient sunlight. Elevator available for people with disability. Outdoor dining space with movable tables and chairs.

The transportation system is designed based on two purposes. One is to create pedestrian friendly business zone; the other one is to reduce the car’s speed. A safe and comfortable transportation system would bring more people to use this space. Besides the Wabash river, the Bars Street will be popular among the students, professors and citizens. The bar street could provide party night and outdoor movie as well.

GRICULTURE MALL DESIGN The Best Place To Relax Outdoors On Campus
Agriculture mall is surrounded by the buildings of Agriculture College. But is barely used by students and teachers. The first step is to set up functional transportation system. Based on the researches of the needs from the users, the second step is to create spaces for lunch, group meeting, rest and party.
Instructor : Michael K Sullivan Site Size : 124,000 sq.ft Site Location : Purdue University Skills : Auto CAD Photoshop Sketchup [ Individual Work ]
My design is in the conformity with campus’s style. The creative use of grid would make the space stands out. Besides that, the planting design will bring year round beauty to the site.

Rhythm & Intimacy
The 4’ height planters with ornamental grass are connecting the site as a whole design. They also provide privacy to the reading and lunch spaces. The planters’ material would be corten steel.
The fervent color of Rhododendrons would be admired by users in the spring and summer.
The triangle sculpture is located in the intersection of three pathways, it could also be used as planter. People could lie down on it.
People will play Frisbee on the lawn. If someone is willing to hold a party on the lawn, that would be awesome too.
Existing driveway would be use the same pavement as the sidewalk. This design would create a safer and pedestrian friendly walking space.
The use of ornamental grass would provide year round beauty to the site.
It is a great space for reading, lunch, group meeting. The grid is applied to the design smartly. The planters with different heights also provide sitting for people. Movable tables and chairs are available there without any doubt.

The Design inspiration came from a poem named slower days in the past. The curve lines in this design stand for the passage of time. When you slow down your pace, you could enjoy more beautiful moments in your life, and this is the essential purpose of this design – to create comfortable and pretty garden for its visitors.

Director : Micheal Barnicle Site Location : Newtown Creek, Brooklyn,NY Skills : Auto CAD [ Individual Part ]
77 Commercial street program is under construction now. I was responsible for the planting plan, material plan, irrigation plan, sections and signage plan, signage elevation and details. There were many tricky problems, for example, I need to put right plant on right place due to the sunlight and wet land; I also calculated the height and slope of the retaining wall. The working experience gave me tons of practical knowledge about construction.
