ZHU XUANYI'S PORTFOLIO FOR THE APPLICATION TO MSC ARCHITECTURAL AND URBAN DESIGN THE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH
Reminding people of the beauty of the traditional architecture, inspiring and stimulate the nonbalanced part therefore bringing a more sustainable future to the ancient city
As my years in architectural studies go up.I have been more and more intrigued by how the architectural theories I have learnt can be applied into my own design. Also,in developing my own design philosophy and identifying my architectural pursues, where am I positioning my thoughts in the “Matrix of architecture theories”,particularly of Modernism,Postmodernism,Metabolism, and Sustainability.I am tired of works thataren’t intellectually stimulating. This pursue,or,ambition, has been manifested in my higher year university design projects. These projects include a spring museum and a residential area renewal scheme,a“Micro-center”of Community, urban design project of West End,Brisbane,Australia,as well as a mixed use complex design .In each of these projuct,a proposition was presented aiming to solve a unique contextual urban issue, while testing my philosophical position. The works I chose mostly represent a being of relation, nature and artificial, history and present and so on. The intention of each design is not just responding to its context, at the same time the hidden organizational form is extracted and creates a new value that influences the existence of architecture.

01 “SPRING-SCAPE" SPRING MUSEUM IN JINAN Instructor: Fang wenbo Summer 2015
The site is a demolition area in the old urban area of Jinan City. Many sites with historic value around my chosen site have become the modern urban view along with the city development. The history memories of the people in the city always fade out after the demolition of a block. What I am doing here is to extend the historic trace with architecture style. After the preliminary research and material collection, the project determined the operation strategy to the current situation of the site: to keep the spring in the base (as part of the exhibition of the Spring Museum), newly-built bronze (as a spot of the museum presenting the living picture relative to the spring), newly-built yard along with the Flower Pond (This decision was made upon the the harmony relationship of the yard and its surrounding from the Qushuiting Street to the Flower Pond as the key interface facing the Flower Pond), the old Christian church and the traditional lap of yard in the south-east side.

02 INTERIM URBAN COMPLEX IN JINAN Instructor:Yvonne Wang , Zhou zhongkai Collaborator: Liu tuyang Winter 2015
We defined the transition as “Interim” for the chosen site locates in the middle of the commercial program and historic urban area, in the middle of modern skyscrapers and civilian houses of the ancient urban area, between the modern and tradition function. This status is highly demonstrated in the aspects of architectural culture, form, style and urban planning pattern. The purpose of the project is to shape out a favorable “interim” condition between high level complex and original buildings on the site, i.e. to specify that the modern and tradition could coexist even benefit by assorting each other. In the dim dawn, local resident would buy fresh vegetables in the morning market of Wanzixiang. Then have breakfast at Bianyifang on the corner of Jingsan Road and Weisi Road across, some fried dumplings, a bowl of local congee. Finishing the breakfast, could enjoy a foreign silent film in the Xiaoguanghan Movie east down the Jingsan Road, chatting with neighbors in interval. After noon lap, go to the famous Mingxinchi taking a bath together with friends, enjoying tea and massage there. Late afternoon, go shopping in Nangangzi, enjoying the show from artists from all around the country. In the occasion when star actors coming to Jinan, go to Beiyang Theaters to enjoy their performance, applauding for them. This is the cozy life used to be. In the words above, you can vividly feel the “Slow Life” of the old trading ports, leisure and tardy, intensively contrasting with modern tense and fast pace. So we hope the final project could re-present the comfortable slow life of old days.

2
Continuing Axis To carry through the principles which established in the urban design phase which suggested to continue and extend the traditional commercial axis into the site. 5
Design New Houses Treat the entire Guang Zhi Li complex as one piece and maintain the quietness and privacy of the original Guang Zhi Li courtyards.
8
3
Distinguish Function Define the functional characteristics for each parcel within the site.Guangzhili Courtyards will be the main cultural centre, while the commercial part is to pick up the continuity of the commercial strip. 6
Design Old Houses Introducing terraces and balconies into the traditional courtyard housing, which provide platforms on different levels to enrich the spatial experience for visitors to the Guangzhili complex. 9
High-rise of the Compositive Building
Unify the Form
Two high-rise building are situated to the eastern edge of the site to accentuate the Zhongshan Park green lifestyle Axis and the Da Guan Yuan commercial axis.
A coordination of the architectural language has been employed and carried through the entire design of the site.
Yard space The final design adopted small scale yard space to present the courtyard house, as coordination of the small and comforting yard space and dimension.
Indoor space Has abundant light.
12
Translation of Traditional Elements The architectual language we employed is aiming to bring back the richness and warmth of old memories of the area, yet with an energetic injection of contemporary vibes. In order to create a unique atmosphere,we consulted the architectural language from the local surroundings.Through research we found that there are different historical period of the construction of various scales. From the start of the very original dwellings in the area to the 70s when shopping mall were brought in,and up to recently years when skyscraper are built,we observed a wide variety of buildings. We need to meet the needs of contemporary lifestyle, yet not to neglect the past. Finally,we abstract the traditional patterns of the roof onlocal dwellings and applied that pattern to creat a new facade for the high-rise and multi-storied buildings.

03 WALKABLE CITY URBAN DESIGN OF BRISBANE Instructor:Yvonne Wang , Zhou zhongkai Collaborator: Jia hui,Yin zijun,Dang changshuo Fall 2015
The theme of this program is to walk the is used to unlock the hidden walk in neighborhoods of diverse cultures, and derives a large space sequence relationships through a series of space nodes, the use of imported water series from the multicultural area of visual arts using green riverbank extends to the interior of the series from a variety of cultural events musical performing arts district. Thereby forming a large space in the sequence of contact small internal space. Diamond added elements to illuminate the space inside the base, suggesting that the special culture of the location, guide people forward looking. A large walking space nodes sequent links the riverbank in the north and the main streets in the south, breaking the tedious inner area. A series of small spaces nodes sequent inside also endows different culture themes and functions, injecting vigor into the block, forming a complete and efficient space node sequent series. The “diamonds” embellishing in the base could be discovered even in distance, representing different culture areas, intriguing people to explore more hidden beauties.
20
The original base wasted its location advantages in culture, transportation and view aspects for its function of industry and office. Therefore a colorful public area is created to attract people by extending the view, river and public spaces inward, in accordance with the extending space nodes sequence, linking the crowd and making an amusing space containing different culture elements. Every “diamond stands for different culture area. People could discover and trace them thus make the area more interesting, spending more time here and more beautiful communications happening.

04 "DEN-CITY" SHANTYTOWNS RENOVATION– DINGJIA VILLAGE InstructorYvonne Wang Summer 2016
This project is about the renovation of a village in a city. The chosen site is Dingjia Village in the east part of Jinan City. With decades of history, Dingjia Village has intensive dense but low plot ratio, narrow streets and lack of public open space. It is listed in the 236 urban villages by Jinan Government about to renovate within 4 years. Thus we are bringing out the renovation plan for a real-world project. Our plan has 3 stages. First, build temporary residence scattering in the village, securing the normal life during the period of renovation. Then remove some of the old buildings, reducing the density, building new type buildings upon old ones, increasing plot ratio, and build up 3-dimension transportation. Finally, as conceiving for the future, add new buildings in vertical dimension, moving walking system and most of daily activities to the 2nd floor and above, realizing a city of future.
28
Jinan has large amount of ancient urban areas, evolving into the urban villages in the process of urbanization, facing their fate to be tore down to build high-rise communicates to contain the huge population as their obligation. Then the historic streets would vanish, along with the laugh of children. Those “copy-paste communicates alienate the traditional closed neighborhood. And this design is meant to keep those ancient buildings and use them to retain the relationship of neighborhood, retaining the interactive communications in the vertical city.

Stage 1—Temporary Buildings The first step of the plan is to build up temporary residence to secure normal life of local residents. Basically this step has 5 styles: Commercial, intermixing of commerce and residence, kindergarten, small scale building for 3-people family and for 5-people. The main purpose of temporary building is to keep normal life of locals in the duration of renovation, charactering as small area but high storey, reducing the impact of the process of renovation and construction.
30
Stage 2—The profile of Dingjia Village after renovation The temporary buildings could be jointed together as community activity center after renovation, and distributed in the village as required.
Stage 2—The profile of Dingjia Village after renovation Build walking path and road for vehicle. Move the major living space, leisure space to upper space, while the commerce and public infrastructure part to the space underneath, thus they would not disturb each other.

05 HOME FOR ALL THE “MICRO-CENTER” OF COMMUNITY DESIGN Instructor: Hou shirong Collaborator: Liu tuyang Winter 2015
This project is designed to create a “Community Micro-center” of 50m2. Key point of the plan is high efficiency and flexibility in space usage. It is divided in 4 sections, from open to private from outside to inner. The partition of space is accomplished by the implication of walls, separation of doors and windows and changeable sliding doors. It makes the function permeation and combination from different areas possible. There are 3 set of integrated furniture in total, separately for use of the pack storage, meeting advertisements and service purposes. It defines 3 different space key tones and integrates multi-functions, thus satisfies variety of requirements for colorful community activities. This building covers an area of 45m2, construction area 51m2. Main body is light wood frame structure of economical wood material. Interior adopts glue veneer, outer façade the black waterproof larch veneer, with inner drainage design. The components of doors and windows are solid wood prefabricate. The furniture would complete together with the main body of building.

06 DOTTED CITY  LEISURE LIFE MARKET DESIGN IN FLORENCE Instructor : Jin wenyan Fall 2014
This is a design for a second market, consisting of regular secondary market and so-called flea market parts. The larger part is the regular market, generated basing on the base boundary and people activity streamline. This is where second-hand articles recycles by the management department to the entire city are centralized sold in classified area. The 1st floor of the smaller part is the area for flea market, where local resident could sell their useless second-hand articles. While the 2nd floor provide place for resting and leisure, relatively isolated but people could see the market from, creating variety of spaces, open or relatively closed for people resting or communicating in. The combination of these 2 parts forms a free streamline in responding of the people’s psychology to shopping in flea market. The base is a plot in the city of Florence waiting for construction. There is a green park beside the base with better view, thus my design is meant to take advantage of the surrounding strength, not only designing a market but also providing a space for communication and entertainments.

07 MIND POST RESIDENTIAL BUILDING TRANSFORMATION IN HUNAN Instructor:Fang wenbo Spring 2015
Wanjiali North Road in Changsha City, Hunan province is located in the joint point of Changchang City and Changsha County. It is called “West of the City” by the patients, while it has a more popular name as the “Village of Cerebral Palsy”. Every year, hundreds of cerebral palsy children rent rooms and live here. Adults in hurry and children in wheelchair slobbering are everywhere in on the road. In the end of year 2013, Hunan Provincial Disabled Persons Federation issued a plan to help to cure 9000 cerebral palsy children under age of 7 within 3 years. Now the first batch of 330 children is now undertaking their free rehabilitation therapy at Xiangya Boai Rehabilitation Hospital. This “Village of Cerebral Palsy” is only 1 km from the hospital and the rental is only 100-300 or so. The strategy of renovation is to conduct the space renovation with no change of the structure system and little construction, and produce positive impact to the therapy of cerebral palsy children. The people living there wish the rental would not increase thus the plan would not change the room but focus more on the public activity space.
