Faceted Landscape

The site used to known as “The Yard”, now called “The commons”. It is two and half city blocks surrounded by Park avenue and 5th avenue SE and 4th and 5th streets. The new Viking stadium is adjacent to the site and is now under constructed. Also, there’re two new Wells Fargo Building on the south side of the building. At last, a new apartment building will take half block of space. The light rail station go through the site and there’re lots of other bus stops around the site as well. The Ryan company, who’s responsible for the new stadium is required to have a basic park on the site. However, the city wants to develop a park for not only lawn and trees but also serve the community and an showcase to show the identity of the city of Minneapolis. Dec, 2014

Faceted Landscape According to the circulation analysis, the site is very popularized with automobile and public transportation system, however, in contrast, it is very marginalized with pedestrian traffic. With the gentrification process of new Viking stadium and Wells Fargo building, there’re lots of opportunities to the site. The city of Minneapolis is also known as the city of lake. So the inspiration comes from the water surface of the lake. However, since the new Viking stadium is so big that has the dominated power of the site, it is important to link the architecture to the landscape. The stadium is mainly in the faceted way, so dragging from the form of buckling ice sheet, the lake surface is crystallized and the faceted landscape is created to not only match the architecture but also match the identity of the city in a different way.

With dividing of different triangular space, some spaces is assigned to different functions. Some spaces are lawn spaces and some spaces are covered with canopy trees. Since Minnesota is also know for its diversity of vegetation. Some triangular spaces are also assigned to be planting bed based on the blooming season of different types of flowers.

Faceted Landscape The entire park is subdivided into three different big parts. On is the triangular spaces close to the Viking stadium and the light rail station. This space is designed to be a gathering spaces, it is designated as a plaza space for food truck and other event during the game day. The second part, which takes the entire city block, is designated as the main park space which has forest spaces, lawn spaces and hardscape pavement. The third spaces, which is adjacent to the residential apartment building. This space is the garden space for the apartment. In this space there’s smaller gathering space and climbing wall for kids and other community members to use.

Humanity

The Plaza area of art complex is not far from the garden area. It was surrounded by humanity building and art building with one side open. The facade of the art building is constructed as a entire wall with big glass window. The lights in the building can be seen through from the class like light stripe fall to ground. The design purpose of this plaza would serve as a place that student would go through for class or small gathering space for the art studio in the building. Also, it would serve as a exhibition space for art work and showcase place for the art complex. Nov, 2014

The shadow pattern of the site changed over time. In Spring, about half of the site is under the shadow; in summer, when almost 2/3 of the site is very shinning; In contrast with summer is in the fall when about only 1/3 of the sun can cover the site. At last, during in the winter, the entire side would be very shaded. In conclusion, there’s no canopy trees on the site, instead, three different shadow structures are created to work with different shadow pattern.

The winter walls are mimicking the winter tree shadow, which there’s no leaves but just branches. The summer walls is mimicking the summer shadow where the sunshine would come through the space between branches and leaves. During the summer both summer wall and winter wall will cast the shadow while in the winter only the winter wall will cast the shadow due to the position of sun.

The design of Macalaster Garden comes from a piece of music as showed on the left. Each music note is assigned to a specific shape. There are three different shape system. The system is color coded in the graphic on the left. One shape is for the shape of the very specific space. Those spaces can be used as gathering space. Another shape is the wall on site, they are different in side and height. The third shape, also the last one, was the planter for either trees or other plants.

Invisible City

The article of Invisible city reminded me of my lost and panic in the water and street of Venice; my exhausting when climbing the seven hills in Istanbul.....The canals and street intersect and interact with each other, yet there's still logic and ration, creating the order in the very chaos...... Invisible City

By imaging the invisible city with my memories of Venice, I created this model. To establish the sense of order in chaos, I connected most routes, creating many loop situation to cause confusion. Loop is a very interesting circumstances since it’s a combination of order and chaos---one may confused in loop but will never be lost since one will alway go back to the origin.

For the model, another key thing is the underground complex. The complicity of a space should not only be in 2 dimension but also in 3 dimension. So I made an underworld which is as complicated as the upper level, mirroring each other, reflecting the order within the chaos.

The Hills They Walked

Karakรถy is an area by the golden horn water by the Galata Bridge in Istanbul. The site is a complex of fish market, housing and restaurants. Also, it is adjacent to a old Ottoman ship supply market. The ferry station is also on the site as well. The target of design is to create a public space with that merge the complicity of the site well. Also, keep the fish market and re-purpose the function of housing and the restaurants.

The Fish market was rearranged into a plaza space. The ground was covered with wood decks slightly higher than ground to allow water runoff goes underneath so that the ground would not be wet as it is now. The wood pavement is construction with some pieces rosed up to mimic the wavy surface of the ocean. “Han” is an architecture form that is very commonly seen in Istanbul. It is courtyard area surrounded by buildings. The new fish market borrowed the form of fish Han, surrounding by the market as well as the water. As for the other part of the park, it is dominated with trees to create a forest in city. The ground is covered with lawn for people to use in different ways. There’s a mosque adjacent to the site. To bring the mosque into the site, a garden is created to mirror the mosque into the site.

Chairman Mao Oil & Paper on Canvas 30”x35”, 2014

Paintings I didn’t start painting until entering college. Before that I was focusing on ink and pencil drawing. When the first time when I was doing painting, I was panic because I didn’t know what to do. However, I quickly picked up the skills and started to enjoy the entire process of doing painting. For now, Although I’m still very armature to the field, I have lots of passion and zeal into it. I strongly believe with the practices I will be way much better than this.

Drawings I have been doing drawing for a while. It has became a habit some way for me. I drew a lot and also I drew different stuff too. I traveled a lot and drew while on my trip is very joyful for me. I really enjoy seating in front of a old church drawing the complicity of the facade and feel the beauty of architecture with not only my eyes more importantly with my lines with my own hands.

largo di torre argentina is a very significant site in Rome today. It may not be as important other great ruins in the great city, but it is now the home for many urban cats. The ruin is made up with 4 temples that can date back to ancient Roman Republic. The temple is no longer exist today and one of them is still buried under the street. I was imaging how it would be like back to the old times and drew the line work of my imagination, creating this drawing. I also added the dome of St Peter’s. It is not possible to see the dome on the site but St Peter’s is in that direction. It is the symbol of power switching from the great Romans to church.
