Graduate Thesis: Interactive Concrete in an Underground Transportation Space, 2016

This thesis is looking at how to use concrete, working with light, to create an interactive landscape in an underground transportation space. This is a new field in landscape architecture. This project is exploring how to combine this new technology and technique with landscape architecture design.

Negotiated City, Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, 2015

This workshop format involved studies of coastal urbanization processes in Asia; studies of regional scale, natural, economic and social systems; propositions for coastal settlement; and a consideration of how the urbanization process creates opportunities for new types of investments. My individual work mostly focused on building the model for coastal resilience and sustainable tourism.

Qimu River Wetland Park Design, 2014

This project involved a master plan design for a large scale park, and studies about ecology design which includes sustainable wetland design. This project explored the idea of using constructed ground design to collect water from the natural world and use the wetland to purify the water in this project.

Prototype Station

Concrete Form+ Light

In underground spaces, since there is no natural landscape, people can easily lose their sense of direction. This model uses different colored lights to guide people. It also uses LED lights and translucent concrete to interact with people; a changing light would attract more attention from people to provide information effectively. Also, the interactive concrete wall could enrich the entertainment function of the metro station: it could be, for example, a space for subway artist.

Entrance When people enter the underground world, they feel isolated from the outside world. This proposal uses concrete and translucent concrete to build a more natural transition between the underground space and the aboveground space. The concrete structure could become the sculpture of the park, and it is also the mark of the entrance of the metro station.

ing physically and mentally out of control. To reduce the potential depression about entering the space, we could use projection light to attract people’s attention. At the same time, projection light could make a familiar

Experiment 1 The projection light could give concrete different characteristics than people usually imagine concrete to have. The clear and flat surface of concrete has the advantage of absorbing the projection light. In underground space, this property of concrete could make it work well with projection light to create a different atmosphere. The color of the projected light could give the concrete different expressions of temperature and emotion. The changing of light could enhance people’s perception of the form of concrete. As the only changing outside element in the otherwise static underground space, the change of light would bring people’s attention to their physical surroundings, and give people the sense of time passing.

For the same concrete pile, under a normal light, the surface of the concrete is flat and smooth. When the light source is moved to the hole of the curve, it shows the shape of concrete pile more clearly.

Using the embedded optic fiber and the LED light, the concrete itself could become the light source. Concrete would then not only be the building material, but also a changing element controlled by designers. Concrete in underground space is usually treated as the building material, rather than a dynamic design element. With this technology, the concrete closely connects with light become a variable element.

Experiment 3 In this experiment, I am trying to explore how the concrete structure will influence the performance of concrete with light in underground space. This experiment includes the study of concrete not only as a structural material but also as a sculptural expression of landscape performance. In above ground space, there are many cases of using concrete in a sculptural way. I did this experiment to better understand how concrete works in a structural way, understand how to build space using concrete, and explore how to create a dynamic underground space with concrete structure and light.

Procedure

1.Using steel to build the concrete framework

2.Using steel mash to shape the structure of concrete

3.Fill the frame work with concrete

4.Install light for the model

With the same curved concrete structure, a simple spotlight could lighten the space and show the vault softly. However, the linear light only strengthens the space of the structure and texture close to it, but creates a sharp contrast of the light part and dark part of the concrete structure. Concrete has the ability to create a dramatic space that can tell a story. The structure of concrete itself has the potential to be a landscape sculpture. The right light design, could show the structure of the concrete, giving people a clear view of the space and making people feel safe.

XiLing Tourism Center Design, Chengdu (2014) Course: Mountain Architecture Design Instructor: Xiang Li The building is located in a natural scenic spot in Sichuan Province, a place with abundant cultural and natural landscape. In each winter, white snow covers the vast forest. This tourist center is built on the hillside. It is a multi functional building as well a part of the landscape. Its form is generated in natural texture and hidden in the context. It is a multi functional building as well as a part of the landscape.

Glass enclosure As the building is embedded in the earth surface, so only one-way lighting is adopted. To make the space of building more open and bright, the public space in the south uses glass as an enclosure, to form a transparent spatial effect. A flowing stair system is set along the changeable wall, which does not play a role of traffic, but also is an important visual experience in the indoor space and people can observe the building from different perspectives during walking on the stairs. The “hug hall is arranged as a lecture hall. The lecture hall plays a critical role in delivering regional culture. This behavior full of humanistic feeling is the first impression that the building gives to people. The harangue concerning the culture of snow mountain echoes at every corner of the building.

South Boston Urban Design, Boston (2015) Course: Urban System Instructor: Robyn Reed This studio stressed large-scale design and planning issues, complex sites, and urban conditions. The city is a living organism which evolves in a particular locale with a particular form due to a combination of environmental and cultural factors. These factors, the forces they represent and the material results of their interaction form, in their interrelated state, what can be called “urban systems. This studio explored these systems and the complex issues at play in our urban areas and the potential for positive change.

Today, new hotels are beginning to appear along the coast around Batticaloa, but the trend of building directly adjacent to the beach with no buffer between inhabitant and the treat of sea level rise, storm surges and coastal erosion makes this approach unsustainable. Efforts to protect the fragile and the settlements along it with planting of mangroves and casaurina trees are directly in conflict with the value put on open beaches by developers.

BOLD POINT BIKE PARK DESIGNďźˆ2015

Course: Grad Seminar: Constructed Ground Instructor: Joseph James This seminar explores the parallels between designing and constructing the ground. It's focus is on landform - analyzing it as part of a larger natural system; understanding its inherent opportunities and limitations; altering it for human use & occupation; and building it with varying construction methodologies. The means for this exploration will primarily be through three-dimensional representations with two dimensional contour plans; however, diagrams, sketches, sections, and narratives will be necessary throughout the semester.

Concept Development This is a course in winter session which only last for one month. It aimed at studyin how to use constructed ground methods to create space and build a reasonble circulation system. The design concept is to build a bike park as a central point of mutily city bike path, create an interesting hiking experiences outside, and create the unique landform for skating in the center.
