ROADS

The prefix CO in CO-LIVING actually means collaborative, collective, and communal. They are strangers who have nothing to do with each other. On the premise of keeping their private space, they share part of the public space and live, cooperate and share together.The concept of cohabitation came into being as early as the 1960s. The earliest cohabitation community was sættedammen from Denmark. This is an ideal community built-in 1967. In order to share the pressure of parenting and achieve the balance between work and family

Living together may not provide a “home” in the traditional sense. The reason why this mode has become a new urban lifestyle must be the social activity resources behind it. For those who are engaged in creative and entrepreneurial projects, the lack of a stable workplace circle may be a big problem, but the community culture established by living together may stimulate creative inspiration or promote the birth of new projects.

The depressed small space makes people become isolated. Social isolation is the biggest problem faced by this group. In this society where relatives are alienated, interpersonal relationships are indifferent, and the virtual world of the network is intertwined with reality, the emergence of CO-LIVINGhabitation mode is to remind people to put down their mobile phones, leave their computer tables, return to the real world, and talk, eat and play face to face with the people around them.

As for cobalt, although it is a chemical substance, it was known and used in pottery glaze in early China. Ancient Greeks and Romans used its compound to make colored glass and produce beautiful dark blue. This kind of unpredictable material is the same as art, so we choose to name it as our community. Cobalt is a co-living community for people who are interested in art. In the community, there are not only studios and work areas, but also leisure areas and public facilities. What this cobalt co living community wants to convey to people is that art is not necessarily lonely. In this vibrant community, you can get in touch with people of different fields, ages, etc., exchange ideas in life and work, and have a collision of inspiration.

1.2 Survey Results LAYER DISTRIBUTION

Co-working Space

Generally, we have 4 territories divided from public and private. In layer distribution, we have each territory for co-living space and co-working space. Base on the population more than 50 adults and 10 children, and the social mix need to provide for different people and family, rooms will be designed for 1/2/4/6/8 people in co-living space. People can choose room depend on themselves.

SHARING MODEL Community - Cobalt Cobalt community as a Co-living project will provide professional workspaces and artistic ambience for a group of residents who would like to live together for sharing and discuss their works about writing, dancing and singing, sculpture and painting. Furthermore, the community is fully equipped with public facilities and private spaces.

Private & Communal

Cobalt will provide two types of private space for giving care and satisfy residents’ demands spiritually and materially. Semi-private room – residents will live in an open space together, but having individual bed and storage case, and they will share communal washrooms and other bath facilities. For people who prefer completely private space, they will live in their suites separately, and each bedroom is equipped with individual bathroom, a small size of living space and terrace. However community members will share all public facilities such as kitchens, gardens, workspace for various artworks, living space and more.

Ownership The ownership of Cobalt belongs to the community, which means that all occupants have equal rights and responsibilities, but a team still organized,for management of Cobalt consists of some members who are responsible for a range of supplies, cleaning and maintenance of facility, and activity planning. While managers in this team just make plans for all tasks and keep them work in an effective and orderly pace, every resident will be allocated to their daily tasks and work following the guide of managers. In detail, a group needs to go shopping every week, and all residents may take turns as a team worker of supply, cleaning and planning. A propose – residents are required to complete a form with weekly schedule for communal tasks, it can ensure that everyone will participate positively in communal life.

At the beginning of confirming the community object, it is inclusive and has its diversity, because Cobalt can accept people who is interested in art, and they don’t have to be very professional or artists. We expect every member living in Cobalt can show their art skills and thoughts freely, and they also communicate with each other in open workspaces. In order to improve a positive ambience, regular activities on weekly schedule will be held, like speeches and exhibitions. Residents would like to participate and enjoy them.

Site facing the sea is located on a steep slope between Seacliff and Hallett Cove and is a picturesque spot.

Cobalt is committed to providing services for people of all ages who are interested in art. Whether it's single person or family, you can find your own world in this community. The total number of people in the community reached 60. Compared with a single group of people, the community can accept people of different ages and occupations. First, it can face a wider range of people. Second, it can return to art. Art is not limited to age. As long as there is a loving heart, everyone can shine in this field.

H&P ARCHITECTS,VIETNAM The building is fulfilling the ancient legend of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in a modern way. The combination of architecture and agriculture landscape in an attractive way, they made the two a new approach to sustainable development and named it 'Argitecture’. T h e y c o m b i n e t w o b a s i c e l e m e n t s of Vietnamese rural life: residential needs and agrarian traditions are transformed into terraced buildings shaped like rice terraces.

PRECEDENT STUDY Work & Living space A. in Brussels, Belgium This apartment is designed by ‘dmvA’. This project includes a training center and a practice for advanced diagnostic imaging in dentistry. As the project is situated in one of the more expensive districts of Brussels, it was important to use the available space and surface in an intelligent way. In addition to filling up the unused space in height, the fusion of work and living was an important factor in arranging the space. The house consists of different spaces that can be used flexibly, making the combination of work and living possible. For instance, the training room on the third floor becomes a dining room and kitchen in the evening and the wine bar can be used as a meeting room.

Public kitchen & Dinning room

The extension consists mostly of glass and at the back façade, a guillotine screen has been added that serves as a sunblind. On the street side, a living screen was installed which improves sound regulation and air quality. Due to the frequent use of glass and the multifunctional spaces, the house has a voyeuristic side. There is great transparency between the garden and the multifunctional interior spaces, so the urban greenery can be perceived from the inside. The floor between the dental practice and the classroom upstairs is in glass so that the practice can be observed from above during training. On the second floor, the two bedrooms of the client and his roommate are connected with a shared open bathroom.

Cobalt as a co-living and co-working project will provide people a comfortable place for those are interested in art, such as painting, dance, music, sculpture etc. In here people do artwork together and learn from each other. Its model is special that it has own system, which consists of a service section for management, workshops, shared area and private space. Cobalt design plan considers three principles : aesthetics, humanized design and spatial geometry arrangement.

These symbols show that most of the facilities in the whole project.

DESIGN BRIEF

Compared with the conceptual design in stage 1, we should pay more attention to the actual terrain survey and design as a architectural designer. As the terrain of this projectis very steep, we need to do cut and fill to crate the flat ground, In this stage my conceptual design comes from cube, Cubes of different sizes build regularly on the site and use lots glass to let the snshine in to allow for better lighting and views from above.

DESIGN PROGRESS Since the building will be built by the sea, I would like to design a connection with it. The inspiration for the outlooking of the building starts from oyster, then let the object be deformed by rotating and stretching.

This new design is divided in 3 main parts: 1.Co-living, 2. Co-working, 3. Others. Coliving part is coloured in purple, which the ground level for private (1-2 people), the first and second level for 4-6 people to share, which have own bathroom in each room, and have kitchen and laundry in each level. Green area is for reception, and the first floor and second floor for co-working, then the blue loft is designed as a galllery for exhibition. At left, red room is for game room, then the first floor is for media, lab and workshop, the dark blue part is for gym and studio.

As the site is on a steep slope and planted with lots trees, timber structure is used for environmental protection.

CONCEPT This design is a mix-use building for young artists to live and work.The form of the building is based on the topography, with the buildings spread out between the mountains and be surround-ed by forest.The form is sinuous, like a ivy climbing through the forest.The design a mixuse housing for young artistsandtoonelive and work.Provide building isisdivided into three parts, two of which are residences is a workshop. The building structure is wall bearing system with a foundation module of 8m x 6m.

Design Brief

The art workers Xiaoyi Zeng a1771443 with a safe and convenient iving environment and a space for artistic creation and communication. The form of the building is based on the topography, with the buildings spread out between the mountains and surrounded by forest. It has Wide view and good scenery The shape of the building is stacked like building blocks. Mainly in appearance,according to the topography, the layers increase. It draws on the artistic processing of folding and stacking that artists usually used.

5 concepts of the design process In terms of the distinct boundary for existing facilities, the new design was restricted by them and followed 5 concepts.

Architects: SquareWorks Area: 300 sqm Year: 2018 Architect In Charge:Katsushi Goto NO. 7 Southlands is a renovation project for an old 1930 Art-Deco apartment in Mumbai. It is a dynamic multifunctional space and retains the native style, which make the origin space become attractive. In detail, the living room as a multidisciplinary workshop is provided for art users. And restaurant is transformed to a gallery or exhibition space for artists, they would display their works and organize activities. The improvement of new design shows dynamic character, and its expression is the contrast of static and dynamic elements. There is an example – a studio, it is flexible and can be reorganized in multiple activities with right decorations.

Natural Light & Ventilation : Visually, space and plane are connected to form a “whole to part” cognition. Centripetal organization : to maintain the existing elements, and new plans won’t interfere with them. Inherent materiality : existing decorations on walls and windows without any surface treatment. Keeping them and make a contrast -“old & new” Simplicity : take advantage of existing space elements including vertical walls and windows, horizontal planes.

The project is considered mostly about the alteration of space, and improvement of spatial arrangement for artists. It shows flexibility of space, and early intervention of the design method to balance the intuitive and structural. Specially, various personalized designs are assembled to satisfy the requirements of artist. In conclusion, this one – story co living space combined with residential area and workshop make a balance of “public & private; old & new; single & multiple”

Rainfall data of the site

Wind Summer - south/south-west Winter - north/north east wind from the sea would be strong at night, and building located on windward slope. Existed vegetation : shrubs and small trees on the valley slope, like gum trees and Acacia As shown on the drawing above, green dot lines show the movement of visitors. People can enter from the Cove Rd or an existed pathway on Westcliff court, firstly they will arrive the park area for parking their cars and bicycles. then they can go down to the main building via a stairway which connected the second parking layer and layer one of the building.

Average rainfall per year in Adelaide is about 520mm.

While visitors and members can go to the service center, layer 1,2,3, after they arrive the outdoor garden. this position is very convenient to get into each layer.

The reason why the service center located here, it is easy to get help, especially their first time to come here. However, the center services storage rooms and medical services. the center is near parking site, which is helpful to move heavy daily supplies and other materials. The green movement forms a circle circulation, and this strategies give people more time and more outdoor space for walking and exercise. The brown dot lines indicate cars' movement, the design of parking area is considered to take advantage of existed pathway of Westcliff court to provide the second driveway to access the lower layer of parking area. People can also drive from Cove Rd to turn left into the upper parking layer, then people can also wallk down by another stairway. Maximum capacity ( cars numbers ) : 40 Total area: 520sqm

Proposed matrials for those tanks are concrete exterior wall.

According to surroundings, there won't be high structures to provide shading area, so the whole buiding will be exposed to the sunlight if we do not design other shading devices.

Landscape on the community Along the boundary of whole building, a row of hedge plants as fences. Botanic name : red-head – Acmena smithii outdoor garden : Janpanese maple, Tufted Hair Grass and succulents. Greenroof : Sea thrift, Lawn

For install alone PV systems (SAPS), where winter operation is crucial, the angle should be the latitude plus 15 degrees.

In winter, rainfall data are higher than other seasons, so gazebo and terrace will be exposed, their materials should be waterproof and anticorrosion. And drainage system is necessary

What is the Cobalt ? COBALT is a metal element and also a greenish-blue pigment consisting essentially of cobalt oxide and alumina. Cobalt community will be built near the sea. Cobalt can be divided into two parts – “Co” and “Balt”, “Co” shows the meaning of Co-living and also be the abbreviation of the Cobalt; “Balt” means the inhabitants who live in coastal areas of the Baltic, but our community groups will live in Cobalt and be new “Balt” of Westcliff court.

The co-living project - CO BALT community Its design inspiration in terms of primitive culture - live in caves, and also according to the slope and surroundings, shows a three - layer building with vertical walls, cave - shaped windows and doors, and fluctuant greenroof. The purpose of Cobalt will bring people who will live in this community back to nature and let them enjoy the beauty of nature as they are singing, dancing......

Conceptual design- CAVE

Inspiration 1 - Reviewing the history that primitive man lived in caves, it seems that shared living style was already formed initially. Inspiration 2-Guyaju cave As the biggest maze of China, Guyaju was built in Tang Dynasty and carved into the side of a cliff. It has over 100 homes which vary in size from 4-20 square meters, including essential facilities.

New pathways There are two ways to be provided for vehicles, one is based on the existed street to extend and connect parking area, which is also provided for pedestrians and bicycles. The other one is designed on the right side of parking area, and cars can easily drive in the park.

IDEA

Ubud is a small town on Balio in Ubud District, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of the Gianyar regency. In the 5 years, Ubud has become an art and culture center, it has developed a large tourism idustry. Roam is located on an island called Ubud, German architect Alexis Dornier has transformed old apartment blocks in Bali into co-working housing. With the special rooftop design, the efficient canopy structure spans across all shared spaces. Different opacities, through a range of materials such as bamboo, tin, and polycarbonate, turn the place into a light yet protected outpost high up, overlooking its surroundings.

The idea for my design is to make a building blend in nature, I have been trying different shapes and angles. and finally, I have chosen the pentagonal structure. It is a natural shape, with stable construction. it will help this building Stable on the ground.

cobalt is an energetic artist hub teeming with remote art workers from all over the globe. The community’s common bond is to create artwork together and learn various art together, it is an open community for all ages. COBALT is a chemical element and also it is a color, has been used in paintings since its discovery by Thénard, by painters such as Claude Monet, and Post-Impressionists such as Vincent van Gogh. It is stable and lightfast and also compatible with all other pigments. Cobalt is represented art and also just like our co-living group is stable and compatible with different people.

COBALT As for cobalt, although it is a chemical substance, it was known and used in pottery glaze in early China. Ancient Greeks and Romans used its compound to make colored glass and produce beautiful dark blue. This kind of unpredictable material is the same as art, so we choose to name it as our community.

What this cobalt co living community wants to convey to people is that art is not necessarily lonely. In this vibrant community, you can get in touch with people of different fields, ages, etc., exchange ideas in life and work, and have a collision of inspiration.
