INSPIRATION My idea is mainly about an organic tube between two volumes, which is separated from a big bounding box. The tube not only provides a connection between them, but also works to carve the volumes. I used grasshopper to manipulate the tube, and tried to create a new elegant surface, which is super organic so it can make great contrast to the to basic cube volume. This museum is located on broadway st, downtown los angeles. The neighborhood is a relatively old area, so i think we need a museum that stands out to add more passion to this area, but also has rational elements in it to carry the culture.

For the structure, I made use of the two stair towers to hold the whole building. I used a number of steel columns in the stair tower instead of solid concrete walls to make the building could have a mechanical feeling, and also get rid of the suspended ceiling to show all the original structure elements like metal deck and i-beams. In a word, this is a building with contrast between basic geometry and organic volumes, and the decoration style is mechanical so people can see the original building structure, it also serve as a foil to the exhibition artifacts as a museum.

PRESEDENT My present is Villa Farnese, located in Caprarola, Italy, which is a typical Renaissance building. The interesting part of this building is how it seprate the circulation and program, like the first two floors are galleries open for public, and top two floors are residential spaces for private use. What's more, this building is a renovation from a pentagon fortress at the very beginning. So I believe the form of this building is somehow constrained by the fortress base or the construction technic at that time and could be redesigned in a new way. I tried to use a new modern skill to interpolate original spaces and turn it into something new.

My idea comes from origami art. So while this turning 2D flat paper(original plan) to 3D origami process, I can create more complex 3-dimentional spaces with keeping most of the original connections. So I found the right moments between the folding process of each floor, and assamble them together to a new volume. And if I fold the original building with circulation spaces, the outcome would be even more interesting. like the courtyard could turned into a semi-sphere spaces with circulation flowing along its surface.

INSPIRATION “Sea level rise is like an invisible tsunami, building force while we do almost nothing. - Benjamin Strauss Since there is no chance to win the fight against nature, why not we try a way of adaptation? From the prediction of the sea level rising, there would be 3 feet figher of the sea level before 2066, so what we focused on is how to deal with 3 feet higher see level. The main idea of this project is that parts of the site are protected by the sea walls and the rest part we just let the water in, while the residents dumo the first floor and go directly to the second floor through 3 feet high boardwalk.

The site we chose to work on located on North Beach Village, Fort Laudardale. Large amounts of impervious surfaces exacerbate flooding in North Beach Village. Large amounts of asphalt allenge the ability to prevent temporary flooding do to rainfall and storm surge. The impervious coverage in the area account for over 75% of the surfaces. Est. 30 CM

South Florida floods three ways, from the bottom, top and laterally. Average rainfall values are aproximately 60 inches per year, but almost 70% of it occurs during the hurricane season, from June to October. The annual king tides exacerbate flooding when salt water seeps up in the low-lying areas of South Florida.

[ BEFORE ]

After we did the analysis of the side, we found that half of site is at immediate flood risk, and few place buildings with historical meaning. While few buildings providing public space Since the whole site is relevively small and can be covered within 10 mins walk. So We found the opportunities are - Insert more Place making structures - Create Place making structures that also act as money makers - Provide more public space throughout the site - Break the blocks in the west side to increase the walkability - Focus more on pedestrian walk ways to match the traffic in site

[ AFTER ]

There was a canal in the middle of the site in 1920s, but was reclaimingh for land later. That's an antinatural move, since our idea is adaptation and back to nature, we started tp recreate a waterway between a existing river and the sea. So we decided to - Reshape the coastline to adapt the sea level rising - Extend the coastline to increase docks along the site - Create new high-rise buildings as CBD and two floating hotels as landmark - Break the original neighborhood to marshland parks - Create sky cooridors to connect high-sise buildings - Create access to the new hotel roof to provede sightviewing walk ways

INSPIRATION The writing museum, as a landmark that connects humans to writing systems, is designed to reveal the development of writing through the movement of the visitors. Circulation is used as “carving” or “engraving” into the walls of the main hall. Through the development of writing systems, information is encoded in the sequence of strokes. When writing is performed, the human hand moves through the sequence of strokes and reveals meaning through time. The performance of writing or calligraphy, is a linear process that generates characters that forms writing system. The continuous hand movement during writing creates the directionality and time sequencing of the strokes.

The main chasm is a double height space from the west side to the east side, connecting public (café, retail, ticketing) and private programs (education, office). The secondary chasm is from north to south, forming the north entrance and the south sky light. The intersection of the two chasm forms the lobby and public gathering space. The architectural moment of the intersection reveals the linear making process of the museum, giving the visitor a viewpoint to trace back and look forward. Moving through the museum, the visitors are able to create a continuous experience of the writing process.

CONSTITUTION

SELFWRITING MUSEUM

Incheon, Korea Teamwork in LAIAD, Korean National Museum of World Writing Competition / August, 2017

As a presentation of a writing system, calligraphy connects humans and information. The trace of cursive on paper not only signifies the process of making the system but also reveals the historical development of the writing system. Sharing the same quality with cursive calligraphy, the museum is divided by two directional chasms through time, left with an intersecting moment. The architectural moment of the intersection signifies the making process of the architecture as well as the process of writing.

INSPIRATION Nature inspires wonder. Some people see the wonder of nature almost as religion, while others explore the laws of nature and call it mathematics. I imagine that if I use mathematical thinking to build a church and integrate the two perceptions together, something unexpected might happen. According to the Roman architect Vitruvius’ idea of man’s perfect body proportions, I extracted the golden oval as the plane and formed a three-dimensional structure, with deformation in accordance with the golden ratio again. At the same time, this structure also keeps the traditional symbol of the Catholic Church - a cross - in its vertical view.

I like the name of Beijing National Aquatics Center very much-[H2O]3 (the Water Cube). The Water Cube is designed with the originality of one-dimensional water molecules, two-dimensional water level and three-dimensional ice cube, which is very concise and visual. This name also inspires me to ask what it would be like when a three-dimensional construction is combined with the fourth dimension of time [H2O]4? Time is a symbol of natural law. As a person living in a coastal city, my perception of the tides can reflect that the most. So I want to design an underwater church which can change its shape and function in accordance with the tidal variation.

West Hollywood Belltower

TOM WISCOMBE ARCHITECTURE

The history of the American billboard tracks the larger cultural and technological history of media distribution and aesthetic sensibilities. In the early 20th century, the billboard began as a large sign or threedimensional icon, often calling attention to immediate building functions or domestic products. With the midcentury explosion of car culture and the film industry, the billboard was transformed into something nonlocal—something representing filmic worlds. Sunset Boulevard has played a distinct role in the evolution of the billboard. Eventually, the twodimensionality of the billboard moved towards three-dimensionality, existing simultaneously as sign and object. This proposal builds on this historic legacy in a contemporary way with an iconic, object-billboard programmed with an unprecedented breadth of commercial, cultural, and interactive media content.

On its diamond-like outer petals, the Belltower allows for a combination of commercial media and cultural media events, such as the recent Elton John and Lady Gaga pop-up appearance at Tower Records. The Belltower will feature site-specific art from artists curated by MOCA and local curators, with a goal of engaging the community with important art of our time. This diverse range of content will be composed into a serene, and sometimes surprising, experience that is woven into the everyday life of local residents. Made of perforated metal, the east and west-facing outer petals feature embedded high-resolution LED technology, featuring a rich program of multimedia art woven into the commercial advertising programming.

In contrast to the ubiquitous flat, horizontal billboards of the Sunset Strip, the Belltower is oriented vertically. It avoids the typological “sign-on-a-stick billboard in favor of something spatial and interactive. Akin to ancient bell-towers, clock-towers, and obelisks, the Belltower operates as a deep urban archetype associated with civic space and community engagement. It expresses the contemporary transition from an era of centrally-controlled media empires to a time of great diversity in marketing strategies and stakeholders. It speaks to a world where commercial and cultural content can be hybridized and media is no longer a just a way of advertising, but a way of life.

TYP. COLUMN MIDDLE DATE:

Located in Bel-Air, Villa Luna is a 60,000 ft² 3-story-residential project. Our client wants his mansion has luxurious classical elements but also with a clean and simple looking. This is a tough deal, so we tried to make all the exterior elements as simple as possible to make the whole building "clean", meanwhile we maintained all the detail decoration features on columns and dorms outside. We are in the process to make the interior spaces more attractive by using complex patterns and decorations, just like the classical villas in Europe during late Renaissance. it is always a hard but interesting process to find the balance between complex and simple.
