PORTFOLIO Zhuting Li Master of Architecture

PREFACE BIG IDEAS Architecture is not only based on concrete and steel and the elements of the soil. It is based on wonder. It is always an attractive story which tells how beautiful life is and how colorful this world could be. It is always a slogan which broadcasts the value of the design. The big ideas are the word of mouth and the legends of architecture. SMALL DETAILS Small details make a breathtaking architecture. They are not only the instruction of constructing a building, but also the instruction of realizing dreams. The atmosphere of architecture is based on every brick and every tile. Life hides inside small details.

1 TWO FACADES

TYPE Half markethall and half residence PERIOD 2016.4. - 2016.6. LOCATION Downtown Rotterdam DESCRIPTION As the site directly faces Rotterdam's city square, a monumental public space is designed as the extention of the plaza. On the plaza side, a cathedral-like facade creates identity and activates energy for the city. However, on the other side, the waterfront side, the atmosphere turns quiet. The scale turns smaller. Residence becomes dominant on the facade.

PLAZA

RIVERSIDE GESTURE The facade of one building always tells a lot of one building. It shows the inner function of one building but also influences the outer environment. Sometimes it makes one building outstanding in the context sometimes it hides it. This complex project, containing different functions and facing different environment, starts from the gestures.

SITE The site is in between of the Rotterdam city square and the green park. The new complex on the site will become the end of the city square and the green park. On the plaza side, a cathedral-like facade creates identity and activates energy for the city. On the waterfront side, a residence-like facade fix the building into the context.

PAVEMENT

PUBLICITY

The brick is not only chosen as the material of the solid part of the building, but also the pavement. The continuous bricks make the new complex in harmony with the surrounded buildings. The brick world creates an identity of the site.

The hollow part of the building acts as the extension of Rotterdam city square. The stairs and the markethall are the functions in an urban level. They attract people to move from one side of the city square to another. Street busks also happen here.

STRUCTURE The hollow part of the building uses wooden structure. The solid part uses concrete. The shear walls make the order of the building and build a real solid "solid part".

2 ALL-ROUND SHOW

TYPE Renovated museum PERIOD 2015.10. - 2016.1. LOCATION Surburb Rome DESCRIPTION In the surburb of Rome, lots of industrial remains are going to be renovated. An urban design is the first stage of the design for a large group of students, aiming at connecting the industrial remains with a net in the area. Then each sub-group of students is asked to intervene one building to design a museum which could activate the site in a certain way. The project in this portfolio is mainly about the design process of the museum. How a modern museum looks like and how it interacts with people are the main concerns in this project.

OUTSIDE

INSIDE

A REAL COLLECTION Most exhibitions in the old museums are treated just as collections. However, in the 21st century, the function of museums changes. The interaction between exhibitions and people becomes more important. These interactions could attract other people to join and experience the museum. Thus, the museum becomes a collection of exhibitions, people, and interactions. It is a collection of city, a collection of everything.

A REFLECTIVE SPHERE To design a museum collecting everything, a perfect reflective sphere is the best solution. It is a very special way to intervene the site which could attract a great number of people and become the new landmark. The relfective surface collects the everything in the city. The reflection of the gasmeter will be a spetaculous view because of the curved surface. People will see different view when they are on the different height of the spiral ramp. In this project, museum itself is the largest display window.

THE NET AND THE RAMP In the whole area, the industrial remains and the wall of the industrial area are kept. A net connects each part of the new park in the future. The biggest gas meter is chosen as the new lapidarium of the site. A long continuous path guides people to view the historic museum. As the path goes up along the gas meter, it also provides a great opportunity to view the city from a new perspective.

INTERACTIONS A spiral route with various experiences is designed, which contains a museum, a planetarium, a restraurant, and several informal public spaces. People could view the reflective sphere from different height and they will see different views. The route connects the building to the red pedestrian net of the whole park.
