SOCIAL EXPERIENCE
IDEA-KING Award Landscape Design Contest, Participant 2018
I participated in the 2019 IDEA-KING Award themed in “Future Countryside. The theme targets at the imbalance between urban and rural areas in China. My project is an agricultural expo park combining sales and tourism. While keeping the natural system and elements, I reformed existing factories into modern green architectures adopting sustainable and environment friendly materials, thus forming the production-tourism-sales structure of the agricultural park.

Design for Children
Time Child
2018/ Individual programme/ Changsha, Hunan, China
Programme Description
This design is an urban regeneration project dedicated to the transformation of an old amusement park. The amusement park is located in the park in the center of Changsha, Hunan province, which is the only way from the park gate to the lakeside, but also a necessary place for the children who live nearby. However, there are only obsolete facilities and chaotic roads in this amusement park. Even though the park landscape gets updated every year, the facilities here are the same as they were 20 years ago. Obviously, this amusement park is unsuitable for the current situation of the park any longer.
Problem Solving
In my design, the behavior of children, activities required by children and the space needed by each activity are analyzed, based on which I put forward the solutions to deal with the disadvantages in the current site.

Ashes in Nepal
Background Information
2018/ Individual programme/ Kathmandu, Nepal
Programme Description
Located in Kathmandu of Nepal, the Baghmati River is highly valued by residents at the center of Kathmandu. The project was inspired by a trip to Nepal in the middle of 2017. For the belief of Hinduism, local people tend to cremate bodies beside the sacred river, and then scatter ashes into the rivers. The river is seriously polluted. Ashes deposit at the bottom of the river and form a white riverbed, and garbage from cremation accumulates along the bank. The Bagmati River is called the sacred river because residents fetch daily drinking water and bath water from it. The life of residents are closely connected with the river. With respect for religious activities of local residents, this project can enhance the water quality of the river and improve life quality and well-being of residents.

The current conditions of the river, plants and residences are analyzed, and an open space in the north of a temple where residents usually scatter ashes is found. According to the current shape of city, the river is expanded to the open space and the place for scattering ashes is moved to the north.

Refinement of Formal Language
For the relationship between soul and body, Hinduism thinks that life does not begin with birth, but ends with death, which is a link in an endless series of lives. Therefore, the Mรถbius strip is applied in the design language, and landscape sequence of the site with sight change of various nodal points is designed.

It is estimated that the ash flowing back to the main stream will not exceed 5% of the original ashes.

Programme Description

Behind the migrations of bird is a story about promise. The inspiration of this design comes from a story that a swallow, as a migrant bird, built a nest under the eave, but did not fly back at the next spring. The design site is in Changsha, Hunan Province. In early 2000, a large number of birds hovered in the sky every day, but now the number sharply decreased because of the high death rate during migrations. The goal of this project is to solve this problem. This design aims to change the life habits of migrant birds through chilis, the characteristic agricultural product of Hunan Province, and turn “migrant birds” into “resident birds”, so as to decrease the death rate of birds. In this way, the birds will be hovering above the city again.

Requirements of Chili and Swallows
Timeline of Chili and Swallows
The reason why chili make people feel hot is that the alkaloids in chili react with UR1 molecules in the organism. Scoville scale is a measurement of the spiciness of chili. In order to control the heat, chilis with low Scoville was selected as raw materials.

Intention Figure
This project mainly involves two systems. The first one utilizes the alkaloid extracted from the capsaicin in the factory and transmits it through underground transportation to the soil which is used for bird nests. The concentration of the alkaloid is negatively correlated with the soil depth, which ensures the content of alkaloid in the soil taken by swallows. The second one is an artificial construction near the pond in the forest. The pond attracts swallows to come and pick soil to nest, thus forming an independent system.

System Analysis The two above systems operate independent of each other, but are closely related in the link of soil. Only when the two systems are both in full operation, the ultimate design purpose can be realized, which is to transform the swallow flocks passing through south China from migrant birds to resident birds, thus reducing the migration quantity of swallows and controlling the death rate of them.

Pirates of Somalia
Programme Description
This project comes from my interest in the nautical lifestyles. It is surveyed that the formation reasons of Somalia pirates are very complicated. Owing to the long-term drifting on the sea, the “illness of pirates” (scurvy) has become an important factor influencing the life quality of pirates. A good design should not only direct at certain groups of people in the city, and what I hope is that people can pay more attention to “the other group of people” in the world through this design. Hence, my aim is to create a peaceful celebration for Somalia pirates to provide a chance of communication for different pirate groups and enhance the life quality of pirates.

Designing the Method of Array and the Distance From the Coast
Strategy: Creating a Festival
The strength of different pirate groups are widely divergent. National Volunteer Coast Guard, one of the four largest pirate groups at present, is the most powerful with the best doctors and medical supplies. If different pirate groups can be gathered through this festival to mutually exchange experiences and resources, it will be a good chance to treat scurvy for weak pirates. Also, large pirate groups can also extend their strength in the celebration.

2016/ School Work
This is a course assignment in three dimensional composition. In that course, we were asked to design a 3D installation using geometrical elements. Specifically, I broke down CDs into small fragments, and pasted them onto a huge pyramid-like shape. Two of the pyramid’s surfaces are connected using planar mosaic; the other surface is presented with a 3D effect using stacked fragments.
2018/ School Work
In sculpture course, we were asked to design a sculpture for a coastal city in Fujian Province. The city is adjacent to Taiwan Strait, so I made use of the unique local homesick sentiment and oceanic culture, assimilating homesickness to a drift bottle. In the end, I made a sculpture design featuring a drift bottle floating on the waves.
2016/ Water Colour
This is the scene I saw at a rural market in Guangxi Province when we went there on an outdoor sketch practice trip organized by the university in 2017. I painted the scene where a caged pig is waiting for a buyer with water color.
