Designed by the British architectural firm Foster and Partners Designed in grid form to allow for better pedestrian pathways by stacking buildings close together so that they provide shading and their roofs can extend over the pathways themselves.

Summary Analysis •

Siemens: The company was looking for a new headquarters building in the middle east. This building must suite its purpose and the companies vision; mainly sustainability.

Masdar City: seemed like the most suitable place to building the headquarters, the city itself has the same concept as Siemens; Sustainable buildings and zero carbon emission as well.

The architectural firm is known for its efficient, sustainable and performance guided buildings. This shows the synchronization between the company’s vision, the site’s vision, and the architect’s methodology.

-Sustainable –Efficiency: Maximum ventilation 80% • The hot climate in this area was an obstacle that the building faced. To ensure energy efficiency Siemen’s building had to be provided with the maximum amount of ventilation. Moreover using simple windows open towards the wind direction is definitely not enough for the wind to circulate throughout. • The atriums were designed in the center of building to assure air circulation evenly; the air enters from the bottom of the building and using the venture effect, acceleration of air from low pressure through high pressure, is accelerated through a shaded area for cooling then the entire plaza and offices. Using the other ‘closed’ atriums as vents to push out the warm air that has been circulated. • This is system aids the efficient building greatly however, in a dry climate like Dubai, the air has not been controlled when considering its humidity percentage. In one of the hottest climates, Jaipur Fashion Academy 2 designed a sustainable approach by using water bodies and courtyards as measure of climate control. This water body is direct towards the wind direction to decrease amount of space needed of water. This location also allows the whole building to be cooled down by using the open courtyards as ventilation for upper floors. This system reduces dependency on mechanical system and energy consumption. 1

Maximum Ventilation Proposal By inserting the water body in the direction of the wind in Masdar city, It can drastically cool the air throughout the building. Using the center of the building as a distribution to office spaces and the atriums for resultant hot temperatures. Still saving energy costs and air conditioning but also give a pleasant environment for workers and an attraction for pedestrians

-Sustainable – Innovation: Efficiency: Maximum indirect Lighting 100% • •

To provide the sustainable building, an innovative arrawy of sun panel deflectors were used. The façade is clad in a lightweight aluminum shading system providing 100 per cent shading to 95 per cent of the glazed surfaces, and energy reductions of nearly 50 percent. Moreover the design of this aluminum piece requires no cleaning from dust as there is no horizontal surface. • Criticism: The architect clearly focused on the reduction of energy consumption over the long term by using this façade, also this showed the focus on the function of the building greatly which is efficiency. • This use of façade greatly reduces amount of electricity needed to offer appropriate lighting and thus and is a 14 great system that can be used in hot climate that will also offer great working environment of indirect light. http://cleantechnica.com/

Displaces approximately 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually In corporation with Masdar city, Siemens Headquarters uses these large amount of solar panels to further reduce energy consumption and thus increasing building efficiency. Using these panels is also another element used to show the company’s visions; sustainability and efficiency. Although they are not built just for Siemens and are rather distant from the headquarters, still, the fact that they use it is important. www.masdar.ae

-Sustainable – Innovation: Flexibility & Material Reduction 100% To provide the sustainable building the architect though of the way that they building will last. To provide for different companies and adapt to different zones, the office floors were planned to be an open space where a company can easily creates its zones and even remove floors in curtain areas.

To reflect the companies innovative vision, the architect claims he did the following elements in the design of the buildings: though not entirely new, however different. • Structural system flexible for re-organizing and removal • reduced construction material by roughly 60 percent, • providing great flexibility across all four office floors. • 4mm think sun deflectors and indirect light sources. • Removable concrete slab for future different use

The companies vision of innovation in the designing of new ideas resulted in the collaborative workspace needed to interact the employees together through the day. The space consists of office desks stacked up together around atriums, maybe resembling a group, encouraging the collaborative spirit even as they work alone. Between each group are (2) books and office supplies, providing a common service area for more interaction. The Office workspaces count to around 15% of the office floor.

Moreover the open workspace environment in this case consists of small over-the-desk collaboration, whereas the needed incidental interaction with other employees is a crucial element in a collaborative workspace that does not exist here. This space achieved 30% success.

Pixar Offices designed primarily for innovation and collaboration, however when planning the spaces it was apparent that they both supplement each other; in order to achieve the innovative spirit of employee’s the building must be collaborative. Thus the idea of the “melting pot was created” “If a building doesn’t encourage [collaboration], you’ll lose a lot of innovation and the magic that’s sparked by serendipity. So we designed the building to make people get out of their offices and mingle in the central atrium with people they might not otherwise see.” – Steve Jobs www.ideapaint.com

Looking at the Siemens building i found that the plan was very performance oriented and it’s purpose was to waste no space. Created atriums was mainly for the ventilation, however using more free open space between floors and gathering areas between offices increases the possible incidental collaborative environment. Moreover, the sitting areas (1) offer office supplies, coffee break and a small sitting area resulting in the increase of socializing with others and employee collaboration between the same floor.

To increase work performance a relaxing spot is needed, this increase in work performance will enhance the critical and creative thinking needed in Siemens. The space consists of low comfortable and colored seats positioned in the centers of pathways. They count up to 6% of the whole space. Also each space is about 3x3.5 in area. They are positioned in the middle so that they serve as an easily accessible area.

Proposal these areas although are efficient in their function, they are just buckled up as a small space amongst huge office spaces and just because a person would be sitting there will not make him as relaxed as he would be if he would just walk to another nearby area and thus 1 increase incidental interaction with other employees and therefor collaboration. This area 5 achieved a 60% success. s

Proposal – Inspired by Pixar The melting pot was key idea that showed the collaboration. The term itself stand for mixing of ingredients or in this case ideas. Creating an atrium in the center of office spaces was encouraging to employees to move around the office vertically and horizontally. To reassure the melting pot theory in the Pixar Offices, I have added the circulation of the offices in this melting pot, so that this area is where everyone accidently meets everyone else specially as they move across floors. This was my idea of vertical collaboration, by making curtain gathering spaces visible from other levels, people can meet others more frequently.

One of the work field that Siemens works on is th e problem solving; they find an environmental pro blem like for instance congestions and traffic probl ems and find a solution to fixing this problem thro ugh critical thinking. Meeting rooms are arranged around the same atri ums for ventilation and light whereas other one-on-one meetings are provided. The one-on-one meetings are dividers between the 3 sets of atriums. Criticism: Meeting rooms are always closed and they are always more functional and purpose oriented, calling this purpose critical thinking is just the title of the activity however it does not define it. Thus the percentage is 20%

360 HQ Building The office buildings consists of a central atrium resembling so mething like the melting pot, however this atrium consists of v arious levels of collaborative areas. The need of the individual(s) to be provided with various optio ns for environments is psychologically important. If the enviro nment suits and comforts the individual his or her work perfor mance will drastically improve. In this atriums there are what they called “ Future Collider�, thi s space was named after the companies work field; particle ac celerator. Moreover these future colliders are elevated above ground level accessed by stairs. How this influences each indi vidual is different; one may think this is an adventurous tree h ouse place where they can work and another may think this is a secluded pod of thinking.

Further more to add other environments there are completely open collaborative spaces at the bottom where other employe es have a higher chance of interacting with people sitting there. Also the central informal gathering area (3) Provided the floor space connection between them. This space the “Live and work “space. Complying with different comfortable environments and variety in levels, each individual is offered a different emotion in each space. With more activities in the area, there is more motivation to work, live, in this area; a work out area and a small cafeteria room looking to the north.

Meeting rooms Through dividing spaces amongst the building it easier to divide the functions as well. This part of the building is the more quiet and for mal zone of the building. Just as the 360 HQ buil ding had done, putting the meeting rooms and to gether and between them are break areas where employees can interact over meeting break, mor eover there are different kinds of meeting like the critical thinking area in the center (2) and the me eting pod (5) providing another environment that people can choose from like the 360 HQ building . Also the one-on-one meeting were placed alongs ide stairs so that more incidental interaction is pr ovided. 1 This green roof was built the ‘different’ environment that employees can relax at in order to increase work performance. It consists of nothing what so ever and appears to be a walking space where maybe other may incidentally meat. There is no relevance between its name and its aesthetic. A roof garden must a relaxing informal area where casual interaction can occur. This roof garden serves no interaction unless you’re standing, serves no greenery and definitely not relaxing as the hot climate makes the space worse. This space counts to 15% of the last floor of the building. Proposal: Removal of the roof garden because the hot climate will make this place intolerable and deserted, moreover, in order to plant on a roof will require sunlight and special structures. Social Responsibility – Pedestrians pathway 0% The Siemens building is at the center of this soon to be technology breakthrough city. The architect used the building as an access route for pedestrians from the station and university. This access socially responsible as it allows for shading walking areas, however completely not creative. The pathway (white) leads through the plaza in the Buildings. The pathway itself consists of no greenery or water elements. It counts as 15% of the buildings floor. This part achieved 0% success

“..the plaza encourages pedestrian movement within the heart of the site.” The place is meant serve pedestrians in their walkway just as siemens serves them by providing them sustainable products. “…the shared public realm is further enhanced by a series of external rooms, retail units and two fully glazed office receptions.” This space consists of flights of stairs and an elevated restaurant of about 26x12m counting around a low 6% This space served only the pedestrians as a connecting and had no impact on them, this provided no environment or pleasant interaction with the society. However the restaurant are although a great idea to make this plaza more active, is no enough. The plaza only connects from a pathway to that leads to the station to the entrance of the building. This of course is rather boring especially considering how there are no activities and interaction with people passing

Route

This Siemens building in Munich further connects pedestrians, welcoming them into an open central area where side activities and optional pathways leading to exists exist. This gives the people interaction with the building spaces and also encourages them to come in to this central area and use it as a route so that they can interact differently with the building each time.

Proposal Pedestrian Pathway To allow for proper pedestrians walkway the architect only considered the access itself and not the route they take. Giving the pedestrians optional pathways encourages and welcomes the free-mind of pedestrians. Moreover, to interact with the pedestrians the building must provide something for them, creating a different activities in the atriums as subroutes from the main walkways gives them an interaction with the building and the company itself. Making a collaborative zone in the center showing the engagement of the companies employee and encouraging the engagement of pedestrians as well. Providing a casual area where a restaurant is provided further more encourages pedestrians to consider this not only a pathway but a route where they are given options to interact amongst each other and the company

The Siemen’s Masdar City building lacked any kind of interaction with pedestrians, this causes the building to become spacially invisible to anyone passing by. By creating different activities in the plaza, the building can serve the society in more ways; gathering areas for pedestrians to meet and sit; products and history to teach people of environmental awareness and siemens impact on the environment; Feedback area where people can collaborate new idea with Siemens. Moreover retail stores remains just as the restaurant area that will encourage pedestrians to consider the building more than just a walking route but a pleasant activity area. With a welcoming entrance and a soothing water body the building can have a much better positive social impact.

Weak points: – Very functional office spaces. The meeting rooms, break rooms and cafeteria are all in the same space not allowing the change of environment. – Social responsibility does not entirely exist. The grid form of the building allowed ventilation but was not at all welcoming. The route as well was not a route that would really encourage pedestrians yet alone grab their attention. – The elevation shows the functionality on the building, it achieves performance and efficiency through the panels however it does not have to do with social responsibility of the company; there is no welcoming elevations or reaching out to them either through space or activities in the plaza.
