una County has emerged as a hotspot in the production of renewable energy, with commercial power already being generated by wind and solar facilities. PNM’s solar field south of Deming came on line August 2011 and the Macho Springs Wind Energy Farm northeast of town was producing electricity in November 2011. Sapphire Energy has proven its technology for producing fuel oil from algae and its 300-acre project near Columbus will conclude its commercial viability. Oil extracted from the fast-growing algae can be transported and refined with the same equipment used for petroleum products, it utilizes and recycles the area’s plentiful brackish water sources and

algae growth consumes carbon, helping to offset the combustion footprint. The protein-rich byproduct can be utilized as feed for cattle or fish. What makes Luna County the attraction for renewable energy investors? Linda Smrkovsky with Deming-Luna County Economic Development notes a number of incentives, but the abundance of sunshine is the clear advantage. Luna County and a portion of Hidalgo County provide the most sunshine for your investment dollar of any region in the United States! A new solar plant is currently under consideration adjacent to the Macho Springs Wind Farm, the City of Deming is considering solar panels for its water treatment plant and land has been set aside for possible installation of a molten salt solar tower facility that stores a portion of the thermal energy collected, allowing for a more consistent output of electricity and for addressing peak power demands. eraldine and Gertrude Kretek claim that Deming is “A great place to live!” After 81 years, they should know. Deming Horizons knows that it is people like the Kretek twins, photo specialist Ron Wolfe and downtown business owner Dela King who ultimately create and continue to develop a community that is a place of pride – a hometown to love. These are four individuals among many who support area groups and causes, contribute their personal time and energy and are constantly striving to keep Deming special.

delA King A DOWNTOWN ADVOCATE “It’s all about community and supporting each other in our business efforts,” states downtown business owner Dela King. “To create a vibrant downtown district while maintaining the historic character of the buildings is definitely a challenge, but one that will pay off in the long run for the city. It requires patience and most of all, commitment. Results from the combined efforts of business people, arts groups, schools, the city and local volunteers are already materializing. And there’s much more to come!” Dela moved to Deming seven years ago from Oklahoma City and opened her shop, Room With a View. She has expanded her custom framing and gift gallery to include her entire elongated building on Pine Street. She and Barbara Reedy contributed much time and effort toward Deming’s acceptance as a MainStreet Community and Dela has served on the board since 2005. She has assisted board members with a variety of projects like locating funding for “way finding” signage to important community assets. Dela personally conducts two or three events each year at Room With a View to promote other businesses and artists in the downtown area. Room With a View was selected as the 2009 Business of the Year by the Deming Luna County Chamber of Commerce and Dela has served on the Chamber board. Dela convinced the city to open up the vacant area next to her business, and it is now evolving into an art park. High school students are painting a mural on one of the walls during the 2012 summer months. If you’re downtown and see the “façade squad” volunteers working on the front of a downtown building, why not stop and lend a hand. “The improvements I see every month make me proud to be a Deming business,” states Dela, “and local participation will keep the ball rolling!” DEMING HORIZONS – 7
ron Wolfe MORE THAN A HOBBY

Ron Wolfe retired from the data processing industry, but photography has always played a significant role in his life. While living in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, he was a member of a local photography club and his work was featured at the Westboro Art Gallery. A big leap came when he began offering annual digital photo workshops on cruise boats out of Florida. Ron and his wife, Sue, moved to Deming in March 2007. “We liked New Mexico and Deming provided an affordable base for us.” Ron is past president of the Deming Photography Club and continues to provide photos and historic photo restoration to various local groups and organizations like Animal Guardians, First Fridays, Cancer Society and the Chamber of Commerce. He is the Superintendent of Photographic Arts for the Southwest New Mexico State Fair and past president of the Country Club Estates Home Owners Association. He presently serves as president of the Doña Ana Camera Club and last year organized a Southwest Photographic Symposium in Las Cruces. The symposium generated sufficient regional interest that he is now searching for a larger location for the event. Ron has been hanging his photographic art in the gallery of Southwest Environmental Center in downtown Las Cruces and he is providing work in support of preserving Otero Mesa. His extraordinary photo work earned a first place in the still life category and honorable mention in black and white at the March 2012 El Paso Foto Festival (The only awards offered in each category were first and honorable mention). He is also listed as an on-site photographer for Red River Paper Company out of Dallas. But how about those cruise workshops? Ron is still providing digital photo workshops on cruise boats, with the next one sailing out of Boston into Canadian waters. Participant photographs taken on shore are critiqued back on board. Photo instruction just doesn’t get any better!

THE INCREDIBLE SISTERS
As children, twin sisters Geraldine and Gertrude Kretek helped their mother Bessie prepare garden produce, homecanned preserves and baked delicacies for entry at the Southwest New Mexico State Fair in Deming. At age 82, the sisters were Grand Marshals for the same fair in 2011. In the meantime, they have carried on their mother’s work to this day. “Our mother always had faith in the fair,” Geraldine explains. When they harvest their garden, says Gertrude, “We like to wait until the last minute so the produce is nice and fresh.” If this was all there was to their story, it would be a story worth telling. The Kretek twins, however, seem unstoppable; they are also award-winning tennis players, swimmers, pecan growers, white-face cattle ranchers, and honored golfers. Their father, one of Deming’s early settlers, was Frank F. Kretek, Sr., born in Czechoslovakia. The sisters learned how to prepare dishes like klobase and kolache so well that they were invited guests at the Smithsonian Institution in 1992, cooking traditional Czech foods for visitors. Gertrude won the Carta Blanca Golf Tournament in Juarez, Mexico in 1965 with scores of 68, 70 and 71 for the threeday event. “That’s a heck of a score to have at the Juarez course,” Geraldine says proudly, and she should know; she still has the original scorecard. The twins also display matching handbags autographed by Arnold Palmer on their 75th birthday. Perhaps one simple monthly habit describes the sisters best, though. Once a month the Deming Luna County Chamber of Commerce buys a two page spread in the local newspaper to keep readers aware of local events. The cost is offset by contractors and businesses advertising their services and merchandise. The ad the Kretek sisters buy reads simply “Gert & Gerry Kretek - Deming, New Mexico! A great place to live!” “I’m proud to be in Deming,” Geraldine says. “I’ve stayed here all my life,” says Gertrude. “I love Deming.”

AGood Mix!
n important element of the Deming Photography Club appears to be the background mixture of its members. There are current professionals and there are those who previously had made their living as photographers. Some are striving to keep their skills current while others are simply absorbing everything they can about the art of photography. A few just want to take a better picture. The bond for the group, of course, is the enjoyment of photography and the camaraderie their cameras provide. The club provides numerous learning opportunities. There are workshops for portrait photography, both indoor with professional lighting and outdoor with natural light. There has been a workshop on macro photography and field trips for shooting landscapes. Photo editing techniques for digital images are another important element of the club, and there are discussions about light balance, depth of field and calibrating color monitors. Members frequently give presentations, such as club vice president Lon Shelton who shared his knowledge of astrophotography. Lon moved to the Deming area to photograph night skies because of the greater potential for cloudless nights and lower light pollution. At the meeting, he discussed his mechanized telescope, laptop computer controls and photo enhancing programs. Club president, Michelle Franco, has challenged members with her project. 52 Members are requested to take a photo each week with an assigned theme like a flower or still life arrangement. Once a month, members are given a photo to edit and the results are discussed at the following meeting. “In the three years that I have been a member of the club,” states Michelle, “I have learned a lot about my style of portrait photography. The critiques and editing tips help so much. We recognize that we are not competing against each other, but rather helping each other achieve a higher level of professionalism. Each of us maintains our individual perspective, which may appeal only to certain people in the community.” Michelle notes that the area is full of photo opportunities like the gorgeous sunsets and sunrises, the Florida mountains, poppies, cloud formations and an

Past president, Don Arnott, commented that in addition to photographing the architecture of Deming’s downtown buildings, there are numerous day-trip opportunities – ghost towns, lakes and tall pines, the City of Rocks and other area state parks, as well as numerous summer activities from rodeos to duck races and music in the parks. The club is involved in two shows in 2012, one at the art center and the other at the museum. The shows provide members the opportunity to showcase their work to the public, which helps publicize the club and occasionally leads to job opportunities for members. The club meets the first three Tuesdays of the month at 9:00 am at the Senior Center and the fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm.

PAINT the TOWN A COOPERATIVE EFFORT
It’s happening! Artistic murals are appearing in the historic downtown area. A program initiated and facilitated by the Deming Art Center has garnered participation from area schools, local businesses and the county’s Keep Luna County Beautiful Program – the source of funding for materials. A portable 4’ x 8’ mural completed by Marcia Langston’s art class at Red Mountain Middle School will hang on Rick Sherman’s building at the corner of Silver and Spruce Streets. During the summer of 2012, high school art and honor students will be painting a mural on a wall of Dela King’s building in the Art Park space. The work will be facilitated by art instructor Jesse Kriegel. MUSIC in the PARK Music fills the clear open air of a natural venue that is unbeatable. The best of Southwest New Mexico’s performers liven up the picnic shelter area of Rockhound State Park during the third Saturdays of the summer months, with the added feature of exceptional views of the Florida Mountains during the unfolding of Mother Nature’s own Deming sunset spectacle. Music in the Park is sponsored and organized by Friends of Rockhound State Park as a means of broadening the utilization of this unique facility. The series includes free monthly presentations in a variety of musical genres, May through August, with a September finale of local mariachi music and folk dance sponsored by First New Mexico Bank and the Deming Lions Club. “We are particularly excited about the 2012 series,” says coordinator Veronika Barnes. “We hope you’ll join us at the park.” This year’s features include Three’s Company, a mix of country and rock’n roll; Silver City’s Loose Blues Band performing oldies and blues; Brandon Perrault, a well-known Silver City guitar and vocal artist; and a double hit featuring Justin Reyes and Veronika Barnes. The performance in September features Deming’s own Mariachi Corazon del Desierto and Estrellas del Desierto Ballet Folklorico. In what many consider to be the heart of Old West Country, Hidalgo County and its county seat of Lordsburg are Deming’s neighbors to the west. The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Museum captures the city’s beginnings as a railroad, agriculture and mining town, highlights the landing of Charles Lindbergh and displays a nationally-recognized collection of prisoner of war memorabilia. Just two miles south of town lies Shakespeare ghost town, once home to the likes of Billy the Kid, Curly Bill Brocius and Russian Bill. Southwest of Lordsburg near Arizona’s Chiricahua Mountains is Rodeo, a community that has gained popularity as an arts village in recent years. Presently, Rodeo is home to three galleries: The Chiricahua Gallery, the Rock Shop and the Roger McKasson Studio Gallery, a working studio owned by the noted painter and sculptor. Rodeo also offers restaurants, B & B’s, RV facilities and the Chiricahua Desert Museum. Hidalgo County is known for its wildlife photo opportunities and particularly for its bird population. Species of birds found nowhere else in the United States venture into the county’s southwest corner and the wilderness study area along the Gila River. Clear, starry night skies make the county a great destination for amateur astronomers.

he words cancer and obesity are frightening words for Americans, often creating feelings of hopelessness with visions of treatments in some faraway and unfamiliar city. This is especially true for people living in rural areas like Southwest New Mexico. Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City, however, has taken major steps to broaden medical options for both of these afflictions for residents of the four-county region it serves.
