he Deming-Luna De County Economic Development Partnership is working hard – not n only to attract new businesses but also to retain businesses and industries industrie that already call Luna County home and foster new business growth. Traditionally T aditionally a stronghold in agriculture, the county has diversified into other types Tr of manufacturing manufactur to take advantage of the skills and work ethic of its workforce. Compass Manufacturing Services (wiring harnesses); J & D Produce (produce farming); Mizkan Americas (world’s largest processor of chile); Mimbres Memorial Hospital and Solitaire Homes (manufactured houses) are major employers. Luna County businesses have access to a deep network of local, state, and federal resources to support its vibrant community of existing businesses and to promote the success of entrepreneurial ventures. Deming’s location on I-10, access to rail service, and private airport are major factors available to new, expanding and relocating businesses. Luna County has a population of 25,095 and shares a 54-mile border with the Republic of Mexico. A large modern International Port of Entry located three miles south of the Village of Columbus on State Highway 11, provides 24-hour service between the Mexican State of Chihuahua and the U.S. market for a variety of agricultural products and where more than 80,000 head of cattle are crossed into the U.S. annually. Benefiting from significant and sustained investments in the region, Deming and Luna County will continue to expand the transportation network, strengthen technical intellectual capital, and enhance its communications backbone. Three state parks—City of Rocks, Rockhound and Pancho Villa State Parks—the 18-hole Rio Mimbres golf course, rock hounding, and extreme Ibex hunting make Luna County an outdoorsman’s dream. The outdoor recreational activities and tourist destinations for New Mexico’s southwestern region make for unique and exciting attributes of Luna County. Luna County is located within the northern reach of the Chihuahuan Desert, providing outstanding desert landscapes, brilliant sunsets and stunning night
skies. The terrain embraces the Cooke’s Range, Floridas and Tres Hermanas mountain ranges. Luna County’s geography makes it an ideal location for current production of solar, wind and bio fuels alternative energy. Let us take you on a tour of our county. Consider this a standing invitation. After all, nothing beats personal contact and first-hand experience.

Steve Westenhofer Chief Executive Officer Mimbres Memorial Hospital & Nursing Home Steve Westenhofer has been CEO of Mimbres Memorial Hospital & Nursing Home in Deming for four years. He administers a campus with multiple medical resources, highly ttrained i d physicians h i i and d services i th thatt exceed d national ti l quality lit bbenchmarks h k iin severall areas. H He also administers the affiliated Mimbres Professional Building. [See page 15.] “I’ve always loved working in hospitals because of the nature of the work,” he says. “You’re working with people who have the same motivation you do – providing care, comfort, and compassion for our community.” He adds that the Deming community is very supportive of the medical profession. Steve has long since “converted to small town living”, he says, touting “the positives of a small community: safety and the more relaxed pace of life.” Plus, in Deming, he notes, the weather is fantastic, there’s immediate access to outdoor activities and it’s a great location to get to other areas for a long weekend – Tucson, say, or Silver City. Steve earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky and a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Spalding University, also in Louisville. He also has a graduate certificate in health care administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
Ken Leupold Director, WNMU Deming Campus The son of teachers, Ken Leupold, BSE, MA, has spent his life in the classroom and that’s fine with him. “Education may be the most important job of all, since it is one of the few things that can completely change a person’s life for the better,” he says. Leupold is the director of the Deming branch of Western New Mexico University. He keeps his hand in by teaching an English course each year. His credentials are impeccable: a BS in education from NMSU, and an MA from Middlebury College in Vermont, plus licensure in several subspecialties. Leupold grew up in Deming and taught here for 14 years. He then moved to Florida, where he had an expansive 10 ½ years, teaching English and journalism and coaching volleyball and basketball. Weather brought him home. “When we had three hurricanes in a period of 8 weeks, we decided that New Mexico was a much safer place,” he says. “I know the town and I know the people. I like small towns and I love the desert.”
Dan Lere Superintendent, Deming Public Schools Deming School h l Superintendent d Dan Lere is in hhis eighth h h month h in the job, but he’s got a grasp of the challenges the district faces. Income disadvantages and language access are the two greatest problems for his 5,300-student school population, Lere, a veteran educator, notes. One hundred percent of the students qualify for reduced or free lunches,” he says. And many students start school monolingual, speaking only Spanish. The battle is to get them bi-lingual and “bi-literate” (reading and writing) in English and Spanish by the end of grade school, Lere said. It’s a battle the district’s 380 teachers fight every day and are winning, he adds. Recruited out of retirement in Pueblo, Colo., Lere identifies with his new community, having spent his childhood and young adulthood in agriculture. “Pueblo and Deming are similar,” he insists. “My land (in Colorado) has almost the exact same plants. When I came in July, it didn’t feel that different, climate-wise. The big difference,” he adds, “is winter.” He’s not missed shoveling snow or driving on ice.

James Williams Golf Pro and High School Golf Coach James Williams has been the PGA professional at Rio Mimbres Country Club for 35 years and golf coach at Deming High School for 17 years. He’s a pretty good teacher, too – in those 17 years his student teams have won seven state championships! “There are two things to know about golf: first, that it’s a game that anyone can play, and second, that it’s so challenging,” he says. “It’s a game that you never master and if you can accept that starting out, you’ll enjoy it a lot more. It’s a game that you can play your whole life; we have players from ages 7 to 90 out here. There are days when I see three generations in the same family—grandfather, father and grandson—playing golf together.” James grew up in Deming and took the pro job after earning a degree in business administration from Eastern New Mexico University. He and his wife Cindy have reared four children in Deming. “Deming’s a good place to live,” he says. What he loves about his job is developing relationships with the people who take lessons from him. “That’s the most rewarding part,” he says, “being able to help them become better at the game of golf.” left: James discusses options with Lynda Duncan.
Glenn Kruger President Deming Performing Arts Glenn Kruger thinks wistfully of the time when the DPAT, DPA PAT PA AT, T, the th Deming Performing Arts Theater, was the home of community theater productions. Now it’s a venue for road shows, which he as DPAT President is responsible for booking. He also runs the website and design. “I hire performers from across the country; we try to do two a month from October 1 through April 30,” he explains. The all-volunteer organization keeps it going, Kruger adds. “There is good camaraderie. A lot of good friendships have evolved out of DPAT.” The shows for Spring 2015 include some real favorites among Deming aficionados: Freddie and Sheila Pelletier, guitarists from Saskatchewan, will be in town for Valentine’s Day, followed by The Mesilla Valley Swing Band on Feb. 21; “Holy Water & Whiskey,” March 14; “Cowboy Way,” April 4, and Jeff Scroggins & Colorado, April 18. “We try to bring in one country-and-western act a month, and one non-country,” Kruger says. It’s been a 10-year gig for him, since he was recruited into the job from the county’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program in 2004. “I’m a retired aircraft mechanic and wastewater treatment plant operator, but I’ve gotten the hang of this show-biz thing,” he says with a chuckle. “There’s a whole slew of stuff to do in Deming, but somehow people can't find it. DPAT has the answer: ‘Wholesome Family Entertainment!’” The Deming Performing Arts Theater is in the renovated Morgan Hall, 109 E. Pine & Gold Streets. Go to www.dpat.org.

Lyn Orona Visual Artist Life in Deming has been a renaissance for artist Lyn Orona. The longtime silversmith and clay sculptor has branched out into impressionistic Southwest paintings, and she also has become an “activist for the arts,” rather to her own surprise. She got the Deming Public Schools involved in the national Poetry Out Loud program in 2008, which has provided scholarships for some students. Orona also organized a juried art show in October 2014 that paid 30 percent of sales to the Wounded Warrior Project and the DAV homeless vets project. The second annual show, also slated for October, will benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. “It should be even bigger and better,” she says. Orona and her husband Richard, also a silversmith, retired to Deming from California 10 years ago and have shown in regional exhibitions and at the Arts International show in El Paso. “Deming is such a little gem of a place right off the freeway,” she says. “We like to encourage arts here.”

ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND QUALITY OF LIFE

ife is good in Deming, especially for families. This wonderful small town has multiple o opportunities for entertainment, arts and activities that enhance the quality o of life for people of all ages. The Deming-Luna-Mimbres Museum has been called “the Smithsonian of the Southwest,” and is a great place to start learning about this unique corner of America. It is run by volunteers and admission is free (although donations are welcome). Year-round beneficent weather makes hitting the links a pleasure at the municipal Rio Mimbres Golf Course. The 18-hole course is close to downtown and offers a complete pro shop, PGA instruction, a practice green and driving range and even some racquetball courts. PGA Pro James Williams notes that he’s often seen multiple generations of some families out on the course together. [See page 8.] Touring musical artists come to the Deming Performing Arts Theatre from October to April [see page 8]. DPAT President Glenn Kruger is open to suggestions for new bookings. The music is always family-friendly. The Starmax Entertainment Center is a complex where families or romantic dates can find six first-run movies, an outstanding 16-lane bowling center that welcomes bowlers of all ages and skill levels, glow-in-the-dark miniature golf and a video arcade. Above all, there’s a plethora of art, as the 40-year-existence of the Deming Arts Council can attest. “Art is important to everybody,” says Arts Council president Pat Guthrie. Founded in 1975, the Deming Arts Council for 26 years has had its own building, an historic early-20th-century building purchased and donated by benefactress Kit Tramine in 1989. The Arts Council is the only active gallery in a 60-mile radius that changes shows once a month. That’s a lot of dedicated volunteer work scheduling, hanging and manning exhibitions. Upcoming shows will feature Deming schoolchildren’s artwork in March, and, in April, the arts of descendants of Apache warriors who used to roam this region. “The April show is the Fort Sill Apaches Art Exhibition, with artists from California, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma—four generations of descendants of Mangas Colorado, Victorio, Cochise and Geronimo,” Pat explains. “We’re really excited about it!”

eming offers fabulous town-wide and county-wide opportunities for peop people who like to get outside. The climate lends itself to exploration and ffun: day after sunny day of perfect hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, and sports-play sports-playing weather. There are 13 city parks in Deming, not including the city soccer ffields ield and athletic fields associated with schools. City parks include a T-ball park, the Veterans Park and Voiers “Pit” Park, which has covered amphitheater-style seating and restrooms and is often the site of one of the city’s many festivals. Youth leagues in soccer, baseball and football are available. After-school programs in the past have offered free martial arts classes. School playgrounds are open to after-school play at Bell Elementary, Chaparral Elementary, Memorial Elementary and Smith School, as well as organized football and track and field programs on the athletic fields at Deming High School. Three nearby state parks – Rockhound State Park, City of Rocks State Park and, in the village of Columbus to the south, Pancho Villa State Park – provide educational activities and special events as well as room to hike and run and play. Marshall Memorial Library has more than 60,000 books for lending, a free summer reading program, a group program for adults with special needs and the free toddler-time program. Walking and running are always in fashion in Deming, on the many walking trails around town and in the state parks. Several organized walk/run events each year keep the competitive juices flowing. In Deming you can get and stay on the move! below: The Chihuahuan desert comes to life in the native plant garden at Rockhound State Park. bottom: A pair of sotol cactus bloom near Spring Canyon State Park in the Florida Mountains southeast of Deming. top: The Great American Duck Race is the real thing…and very competitive.

David Lanoue, M.D., is Deming’s only general orthopedic surgeon. His professional interests are in the fields of orthopedic trauma, occupational medicine, total joint replacements, knee arthroscopy and hand/foot surgery. The Canadian citizen attended medical school in Ottawa, graduating in 1978, followed by a year of internship at Ottawa Civic Hospital and a year of general surgery residency at Calgary Foothills Hospital. He completed his orthopedic residency in 1988 in Ontario after three years as a general medical practitioner. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. Moving from North Dakota in late 2012, Dr. Lanoue started his orthopedic practice in Deming and has an office at the Mimbres Professional Building at 905 S. Eighth St. He enjoys the “great outdoors,” and his personal interests include flying, motorcycling, alpine skiing and hiking/biking. He and his wife, Kris, have four adult children.

Victor Cruz, M.D. loves to be of service. “We can do minimally invasive surgery, pelvic surgeries and corrective surgery for fecal incontinence as well as colonoscopies,” he says. There is a “significant need” for his services in Deming, he notes. “I am trying to give back to the community not just in medicine but through a position on the city council.” Dr. Cruz’s wife, Francine Jacobs, M.D., has a practice in pediatrics. “I like practicing in Deming, because I get to be a part of my patients’ lives, even outside of the office,” she says. “I see them at soccer games, in school, in the supermarket...and I love that! If you show people in Deming that you truly care about their children, they are so grateful and it shows.” Dr. Jacobs is a board-certified pediatrician. She received her medical degree from State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1999, and then completed internship and residency in Pediatrics at University Hospital at Stony Brook. Dr. Cruz is board-certified in general surgery and colorectal surgery. He received his medical degree, and completed an internship and residency from Stony Brook University, State University of New York. He also completed a surgical oncology research fellowship at Cornell Medical College, New York.
“Destiny brought me back to Deming,” says OB/GYN physician Dr. Jaime Solis. His parents lived in Deming when he was conceived, but he was born and reared in El Paso. After a roundabout educational path, Dr. Solis returned to Deming in December 2008 to start his professional medical career. He attended Universidad Autonama de Guadalajara in Mexico for four years, and then completed his medical education at the New York Medical College in Valhalla in 2003. He completed his five-year residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Amarillo in 2008. Dr. Solis, his wife Martha and their two young children enjoy family trips and cruises. He is an amateur oil painter and also likes computers. Dr. Solis, who is fluent in Spanish, has an office at the Mimbres Professional Building at 905 S. Eighth Street in Deming.
Kathryn "Katie" Randall, M.D. FACOG, OB-GYN “If you grew up iin this hi state and d you go someplace else and you can’t get green chile, at some point in time you’re moving back,” Katherine “Katie” Randall, M.D., FACOG, says, laughing. Dr. Katie is a native of New Mexico. She and her family moved to Deming nearly two years ago. She practices obstetrics and gynecology at Mimbres Memorial Hospital with offices at the new Mimbres Professional Building. “I’m truly blessed that I get to be an OB-GYN,” she says. “I really enjoy women’s health, and gynecological surgery. I am the only OB-GYN who is treating female incontinence in this area.” She earned two undergraduate degrees at Western New Mexico University, earned a medical degree at the University of New Mexico, and completed her residency at Penn State University’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA. Dr. Katie is board certified and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The “circle of health” is the practice philosoph philosophy of Leon X X. Harris Harris, M M.D., D Family Practice. He believes that each of us is more than a current illness and takes the time to listen, ask questions and explain options so that he and his patients may make care decisions together. He was inspired to become a physician by a family physician that cared for four generations of his own family. “Quality of care is the most important thing I offer to patients” he says. When not caring for patients, he enjoys movies, reading, history and family time. Dr. Harris received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. and attended the Family Practice Residency Program at University of Pittsburg Medical Center. He also attended University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health Masters in Public Health Program Pittsburgh, Pa.

lthough originally a big-city girl, Dr. Zoe Donaldson, B.S., D.V. D.V.M, V M loves practicing small-town veterinary medicine in V. Dem Deming. “I see the patients and clients everywhere. I know more about th their lives and what they are experiencing. It helps me to serve them better,” she explains. Donaldson’s practice, High Desert Veterinary Care, is housed in a state-of-the art facility that her husband Jeremy, a Deming native, built for her when the couple moved from Houston in 2008 so he could take over the family farm. Dr. Donalsdon spent a year in a practice in El Paso while he built her hospital. “We have a progressive hospital,” she says. “We have monitoring equipment, IV pumps, gas anesthesia. I like what we have.” High Desert focuses on small and exotic animals such as reptiles, small mammals and birds. While familiarity is a rewarding part of her practice, Dr. Donaldson says, the need for education is her biggest challenge. Parvovirus, for example, is rampant in the region, and can be prevented with a simple vaccine. “A lot of the time we realize people just didn’t know,
