A GREAT
Small Town
By Mayor Sam Baca Photography by Joe Burgess and courtesy of Mayor Sam Baca
DEMING IS A GREAT SMALL TOWN! THE COMMUNITY is a beautiful mixture of native residents and a population of visitors who come to “check things out” and quickly claim it as home. An ideal location at a crossroads with Mexico to the south gives great access to the rest of the area. Perhaps our closeness to Mexico contributes to the unique southwestern hospitality so prominent in our community. As an agricultural community, Deming is known today as the world’s largest producer of chili peppers. In recent years a great retirement community and a thriving business community have enhanced its economy. Its state of the art school system makes it a great place to raise a family. The well-planned city infrastructure is not limited only to streets and utilities but other contributing elements such as fire, police, medical and personal services needed by our residents as well. The great thing is that the “city fathers” seek to improve on that which is already here. In government circles Deming is known and respected for its conservative city government that works together with other government entities to get things done, through the implementation of a “Can-Do Attitude.” The stability of city government is well indicated by the fact that the city has had two city administrators in the last 59 years and two mayors in the last 32. Yours truly has had the privilege of serving for the last 20. Programs enhancing family values include the establishment of a learning center where all adults may further their education and a literacy center for learning English or Spanish. There are senior programs for active adults as well

Style!
SOONER OR LATER EVERYONE TIRES OF COLD WEATHER, AND MANY consider relocating to a place with a more carefree lifestyle. Luna County’s sunny climate and friendly people ensure that the area will continue to attract retirees well into the future. Seniors here will find a variety of invaluable resources available to them at the Deming Luna County Senior Citizen’s Center. Managed through the Deming Luna County Commission on Aging, Inc., a non-profit corporation, the facility has recently undergone a major expansion. The dedicated staff of the Senior Center offers an impressive array of programs and services, many open to people of all ages. Activities at the Center range from the enjoyable and relaxing to the completely serious. On the lighter side, they include bingo, bridge, line dancing, pinochle, and square dancing. Newly refurbished pool tables are also available. Educational and health-related activities include a ceramics class, a crafts group, weekly exercise groups, lapidary and silversmith classes, an osteoporosis exercise class, a photography club and a woodcarving class. The Center offers important health services like blood pressure and blood sugar testing, scheduled eye exams, hearing tests, and scheduled podiatrist exams. A certified counselor is also on staff to help seniors with Medicare/Medicaid questions and paperwork. There are Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and Caregiver’s support groups. Seniors can volunteer for the Foster Grandparent and the Senior Companion Programs and receive a stipend while helping the community. Underlying all of this are the Senior Center’s essential services and its commitment to the community’s senior citizens. The Center provides congregate meals, transportation, in-home services, and home delivered meals to seniors 60 years of age and older. Services are available five days a week. There is also an Adult Day Care Program at the Center. This service provides supervised activities to seniors who have dementia, Alzheimer’s, physical and/or other disabilities. The facility is open four days a week. The staff strives to make the Center a “one-stop-shopping-center” for information and services to support the senior citizens of Luna County.

DIFFERENCE STORIES AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOE BURGESS
Deming has an abundance of blue skies and sunshine, but if you ask folks what they like most about the town, they’ll usu-
ally say it’s the people. After all, a sunny climate is nothing without good people to share it.
Featured here are just a few of the people who have come from all over the country and the world to make their homes in Luna County. Some have been here a short time, and others a
quarter of a century or more. In their individual ways, all of them
are doing their part to make a great small town even better.
Deming attracts people from around the globe. The residents profiled in this feature have come from across the continental U.S., Hawaii, Australia and Italy to contribute to the area’s cultural diversity and economic vitality.

According to Jim and Barbara Reedy, “We’ve developed some really deep community roots in our 27 years here as we’ve been growing into our current project, done a little bit of everything and had a lot of fun.” Their experiences include the health profession, a restaurant, downtown retail, historical renovations, and building the back nine on the local golf course. Both firmly believe building custom homes combines all these experiences. “When people ask us where we plan to retire, we laugh; because we’ve already got what they’re looking for right down the street!”

She moved to Deming from Honolulu two years ago following the death of her uncle, Tom Maine. “I needed something to settle into and fell in love with the area.” She moved into her uncle’s home, originally the Manning Cannery built in 1914. An actress by trade, she began volunteering at the Chamber of Commerce as film liaison and now serves as Executive Director. “I love the challenges associated with the Chamber…connecting people and helping to organize the opportunities presented to the community.” Bridget has participated in countywide theatrical productions, film festivals and worked as producer and director of the children’s theater.

A short trip south lands you in the intimate eateries of Columbus, a National Historic Site, and the international flair of Palomas, Mexico.

Deming native James Williams might have taken his hometown for granted after going away to college, but not so. Having earned a degree in Business Administration, he was undecided about the future when he learned of the open Pro Shop position at Rio Mimbres Golf Course. An experienced golfer, he thought it would be a good first job for him. He applied, got the job, and he’s been here ever since! He emphasizes that what he loves about Deming, “more than anything else, are the people.” The father of four says it’s also a great family town. From dawn ’til nearly dusk, you’ll find James coaching the Deming High School Golf teams, demonstrating the Pro Shop’s wares or giving retirees their weekly golf lessons. And he’s almost always smiling, because he loves living in Deming.

16 – DEMING HORIZONS
“Letty” (Leticia) Gonzales came to Deming from Juarez, Mexico, 32 years ago. “Deming is a small town with good people who care about their neighbors. Everyone helps within the community. It was a safe place to raise my children. And the water is so good!” Her five children, and 10 grandchildren, all live in Deming too. Gonzales says her way of contributing to the community is with the nutritional products she has at her store and the fitness equipment she has available.

DEMING’S VISUAL AND performing arts continue to prosper, thanks to groups like the Deming Arts Council and the Deming Performing Arts Theater. The Deming Center for the Arts is home to the Arts Council, which hosts an art exhibit that changes monthly. This volunteer organization also sponsors classical music performances and Arts in the Parks, featuring performers throughout the summer. The Deming Performing Arts Theater presents musical and theatrical events at Morgan Hall. This historic building was outfitted with a new sound system and other improvements from funds raised by the DPAT. Several other galleries and studios are slated to open in August. Other venues include the Luna County Collection at the Mimbres Valley Learning Center, featuring selected Luna County artists and pieces from the state’s Art in Public Places program and the Chamber of Commerce’s monthly featured artist gallery.

FILM
OFFICE
Does Deming have a future in the movies? The Luna County Film Office thinks so, and is working hard to make it happen. The office works with other agencies like the New Mexico Film Office to determine what locations production companies are seeking. The scenery in the Deming area is a natural for western movies, but other genres of films already made here include drama, horror and suspense. Possible draws in the area for movie companies include City of Rocks, the Florida Mountains, No Name Western Town and the buildings of Deming’s historic district. The Luna County Film Office is compiling a list of local people who are interested in working in the movies. These include background extras, builders, drivers, livestock owners and handlers, stagehands and technicians. For more information, drop by the Deming Luna County Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center.

HISTORIC
BUILDINGS Story and Photography by Joe Burgess
AMERICA’S SECOND TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD began the final demise of the nation’s transportation barriers in 1881 with the driving of the silver spike in Deming, New Mexico. A flurry of local building activity ensued, resulting in shops, hotels, schools, churches and even a Harvey House that served as Deming’s Union Station. Silver Street, stretching south from the original train depot, and its intersections with Pine and Spruce Streets were the primary venues of activity in that era. Though few remain today, buildings constructed in the latter 1800s include the locations of the new T-Shirt Print Shop and Silver Pine Antiques. The home of Seaman Fields served as the Customs House from 1882 until Customs moved to Columbus in 1900. The house is now a showcase of 19th century living and part of the incredible Deming Luna Mimbres Museum complex. The primary museum structure is the National Guard Armory completed in 1917, just two months after Pancho Villa’s raid on Columbus. The classic two-story red brick construction incorporates a decorative front concrete parapet with a coat of arms. The building has been used as a community social center and as a USO activities center during World War II. The armory building along with recent additions provide ample space for Native American artifact displays, military and agriculture exhibits, rock collections, bells, dolls, quilts dating to 1847, antique cars, an art gallery and a Harvey House station replica.

The picturesque Luna County Courthouse at the south end of the cottonwood-shaded street incorporates a tall clock tower and Greek portico completed in 1910. The courthouse gained national notoriety with the 1916 trials of some 30 followers of revolutionary general Francisco Villa for their part in the Columbus raid. Four were hanged in the yard of the county jail. The courthouse grounds and bandstand are still the gathering place for Sunday art shows and performances as well as the incomparable Deming Duck Races.

ROCKHOUND STATE PARK
By Brett Ferneau Photography by Joe Burgess
THE SOUTHWEST IS A MINERAL COLLECTOR’S PARADISE. “Rockhounds” of all ages are delighted when they learn that there is an entire state park devoted to their passion, located just outside of Deming. Rockhound State Park contains abundant volcanic rock and mineral specimens, as well as hiking trails with spectacular views. Visitors are allowed to take as much as 15 pounds of rock specimens from the park for their personal collections. Varieties include quartz crystals, geodes, agate, chalcedony, jasper, opal and others. Visitors planning on chipping rocks should bring along proper tools and eye protection. The park is situated on the western slope of the Little Florida (pronounced: flor-EEda) Mountains. Visitors report clean conditions, large and level campsites, and abundant birds and wildlife. Amenities include sheltered picnic tables, primitive sites, developed sites and an RV dump station. There’s even a playground for the kids. Displays at the visitor center show mineral seekers what specimens to look for. To get there, take NM11 south from Deming for five miles and then turn east on NM141 for about nine miles.

DEMING AREA
AGRICULTURE,
Farming & Ranching
By Brett Ferneau Photography by Joe Burgess
PRIOR TO THE TURN OF THE LAST CENTURY, THE land in what is now Luna County was primarily used for rangeland, and much of it still is today. At that time, however, the rugged, arid countenance and wide-open spaces of the area

seemed to belie its vast undeveloped capability for growing crops. Then in 1909, eight years after the establishment of Luna County, enterprising growers began

Because Luna County is the world’s largest producer of red and green chiles, people unfamiliar with the area may tend to overlook its other extensive agricultural businesses. In fact, with an average growing season that lasts six-and-a-half months, the Deming area is an ideal place for growing a variety of crops, as well as for dairy farming and cattle ranching. Pecan orchards and vineyards thrive here. Along with the famous chiles, other area agribusinesses produce a variety of grains and melons, plus lettuce, pumpkins and some of the sweetest onions you’ve ever tasted. top: Wheat, chile, pecans and grapes are among Luna County products. Although beef dominates, livestock production includes an occasional llama or alpaca. inset: A wooden windmill represents the early harnessing of wind. DEMING HORIZONS – 25

COLUMBUS GATEWAY TO MEXICO
Contributed by the Village of Columbus Chamber of Commerce Photography by Joe Burgess
Columbus is set between the southern ranges of the Rocky Mountains, 32 miles south of Deming and three miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. Its 2,000 residents enjoy 355 days of sunshine yearly. Farming, ranching, retirement and tourism are its main industries. Columbus has an elementary school, a modern library and state-of-the-art computer center, churches, a grocery store, a gas station/mini-mart, a bank, a U.S. Post Office, RV parks, restaurants, a B&B, a motel, real estate brokerages, a residential air park, a youth center, emergency services, a municipal swimming pool, an American Legion post, a community center and a health clinic. Locals take pride in their weekly farmers market, international arts league and community gardens. The community is experiencing a cultural and economic boom. A new $1.3 million education/visitors center recently opened at Pancho Villa State Park. Our Columbus Historical Society Museum greets 35,000 visitors annually. Housed in a 1902 railway station, the museum is expertly maintained and staffed by Historical Society volunteer docents. The library’s 1⁄2-million dollar computer center has begun showing matinee and evening movies. Columbus, once called a “ghost town” in guidebooks, is a thriving community. Our international sister city is Palomas, Chihuahua, Mexico. It’s a short walking distance from the new border parking lot, located near New Mexico’s only 24-hour port of entry. Visitors are encouraged to share the rich multicultural and historical heritage on both sides of the border. USA. Columbus and Palomas have been booming ever since. Located a half-hour’s drive south of Deming, the growing U.S. town of 2,000 and its Mexican neighbor with a population of 15,000 share more than a border; they share history. In 1916, Mexican revolutionary General Pancho Villa used

Palomas as the staging area for a pre-dawn raid on Columbus and Camp Furlong, a U.S. army post located in what is now Pancho Villa State Park. Ten American civilians, eight U.S. soldiers and around 150 Mexican soldiers were killed in the battle, which was the last attack by a foreign military power on U.S. soil. The motive for the attack remains a subject of speculation. U.S. troops pursued the Villistas into Mexico on an expedition that lasted 11 months.

On the fiftieth anniversary of the raid in 1966, the two towns organized a Fiesta de Amistad – a Festival of Friendship – to honor the memories of people from both sides of the border who died in the battle. For the occasion, the state of Chihuahua donated sycamore seedlings to Columbus. The trees were planted along the main avenue of Pancho Villa State Park and still grow there today.
