ienvenidos a Roswell, New Mexico! My Hometown. Let me tell you something about the people of Roswell, because it is the Thomas E. Jennings, Mayor people that determine the character of a community. To the visitor, allow me to help you discover why Roswell has become a tourist and cultural center. It begins with reasonably priced, high quality lodging and food accommodations and continues with the communitie’s proximity to some of New Mexico’s largest attractions. Agriculture and the products made from this industry have provided long term economic stability for the area, which has given rise to a hearty population that holds a strong sense of self-reliance. The relaxed pace of Southeast New Mexico coupled with our friendly, personable residents help visitors realize why Roswell has expanded to encompass tourism and culture. So stop by, let me shake your hand, and finish telling you about the community Will Rogers called “the prettiest little town in the West.”

Roswell Chamber of Commerce A Mission to be the Best. BY DON COX Roswell is a town with a mission. A mission to not only remain “The Prettiest Little Town in the West”, as Will Rogers once said, but also to be one of the best, most productive and livable communities in the West. The “pretty” part comes easy; its the “best” part that needs constant attention and, since 1918, the Roswell Chamber of Commerce has been focused on bringing people to live, work and rela x in Roswell. The Chamber is committed to total community development and to enhancing the quality of life for everyone in Chaves County. It is organized into five divisions to effectively deal with the many aspects of Roswell life. The Chamber Division coordinates community activities for businesses, hosts Business After Hours meetings, conducts member training sessions, and sponsors business symposiums. The chamber has recently hired a staff member to focus on increasing Chamber membership and benefits.
DON COX, CEO
BUILDING
STRENGTH The Chamber also sponsors the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Other member services provide opportunities for the Chamber to take a leadership role in issues that impact the business community and quality of life. The Economic Development Division of the Chamber, The RoswellChaves County Economic Development Council, is concerned with attracting new businesses to the area in addition to maintaining the well being of both the large and small established businesses in town. The division recently recruited new industries to the county resulting in hundreds of new jobs and is constantly networking with Chaves County employers to support all of the area’s business efforts. When Walker Air Force base closed in 1967, the Economic Development Division became the driving force which led to Walker becoming a national model for what other communities could do with closed military facilities. The division helped attract spin-off industries to support production at a bus manufacturing company and engineered the cooperative relationship between the area’s growing dairy industry and the Leprino cheese manufacturing plant. Roswell is also becoming a major aircraft refurbishing center by utilizing the fine facilities at the Roswell Industrial Air Center. The Retirement Services Division (RSD) is responsible for hundreds of retirees calling Roswell home. Since 1986, when the Retirement Services program was reactivated, over 1,350 retiree families have moved to Roswell as a result of the Division’s efforts. Besides the
many reasons people of all ages are attracted to the city, retirees find Roswell especially suits them. Many of the services and support offered to the town’s seniors are coordinated through the RSD. The Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is not only a point of contact for visitors and conferences coming to town, but also helps put some fun into Roswell year after year. The CVB sponsors many of Roswell’s best known events including the New Mexico 3-on-3 Gus Macker Charity Basketball Tournament, the Gus Macker Gridiron 4-on 4-Flag Football Tournament, and the Eastern New Mexico State Fair and Pro Rodeo. The Bureau answers thousands of requests annually for information about the community from both tourists and potential residents. The CVB is currently showcasing the new Roswell Convention a nd Civic Center and William F. Brainerd Plaza. The facility creates a new public area in town and provides state of the art meeting space for future conferences and conventions. Roswell’s leaders see conventions as important business and the CVB actively promotes the city as a meeting site. The spirit of the Chamber and its hard work to improve Roswell are a reflection of the city’s people and the pride we have in our town. As a uniting force in the community, the Roswell Chamber of Commerce stands ready to support its citizens, businesses and visitors. Z
VISION Presidential
Roswell: A Truly Enchanting Community or Roswell Chamber of Commerce Board of Director’s President George Ruth there’s no better place to live then this nice community along the Pecos River. As President of Sunwest Bank as well as the Chamber of Commerce, Ruth’s circumstances have afforded him a host of living choices..... anywhere in the country for that matter, but Ruth finds that Roswell is the best of all worlds. “Life is very good in Roswell. I grew up in Pennslyannia but, as a family, our preference is to live in the Southwest. We’ve resided in a number of communities throughout New Mexico but Roswell is the nicest place to live. its an excellent place to raise children, the quality of life is high, education is strong and thanks to previous city Fathers who were able to see ahead, the business community is very diverse and stable.” Ruth became involved with the Chamber of Commerce in 1992 for a number of reasons, not the least of which was to help maintain and improve Roswell’s economic development. “Being activily involved with the economic development of Roswell is an area which interests me. I think it one of the best ways for me to have a positive impact on the community.” Ruth feels the addition and expansion of the airotech industry is one example of Roswell growing stronger through diversity. The improved position of the Dairy industry and the steady rebounding of local oil and gas producers are other indicators that Roswell deserves to be called an economic powerhouse. “Another thing which has impressed me about
F
Roswell is the level of excellence in our proGEORGE RUTH fessional community.” He says that the area has a large number of quality doctors, lawyers and other professionals who choose to live in Roswell. Tourism is another cornerstone of Roswell’s healthy community. Ruth thinks that 1997 will be a banner year for the area, in no small measure because of the 50th anniversary of the Roswell Incident. “We’ve taken advantage of the UFO phenomenom in a tasteful way. When I travel outside of the region people immediately relate my town with the Roswell Incident.” What Ruth has found is that the mysteries and fascination surrounding UFO’s get the better of tourist’s curiousities, but once in Roswell the communities fine ammenities and other attractions linger with the visitor longafter their vacation is over. The Gus Macker Charity Basketball Tournament has become an institution in Roswell, bringing competitiors and spectators from across the region and from neighboring states for a weekend of festivities and healthy sport. Ruth sees the positive economic impact of bringing in tourists to Roswell, but he emphasized the teamwork created within the community to host such a complicated event. “This annual event unites such diverse segments of our community. And that only makes us stronger long after the Gus Macker tour has moved on.” George Ruth hopes the world will continue to find his community as enchanting as the rest of New Mexico. Throughout the pages of this magazine readers will see first hand exactly why Mr. Ruth couldn’t be more on target. Z

of Roswell...
W
ill Rogers once said of Roswell, New Mexico, "its the prettiest little town in the West." Building on the strength of its beauty, Roswell has grown from a rowdy little cow town during the last century into a thriving center of education, economic development and culture. From ancient Indian inhabitants to the Spanish explorers and the early cattlemen, the Pecos valley has always drawn people to its edge to settle, live and prosper. In the mid 1800's it was ex-Confederate Captain Joseph C. Lea who took what was a lawless hub for gambling and waywardness and formed it into a community filled with businesses, schools and churches poised for a level of growth and prosperity which continues today. Incorporated in 1891, the town of Roswell developed quickly with artesian water diverted to fields which would provide life to

an agriculture industry and investment capital flowing into town by way of E.A. Cahoon, who established the First National Bank. The Roswell Daily Record took hold that same year and within two decades Roswell built St. Mary’s Hospital, cementing their commitment to growth and progress. Businessman J.J. Hagerman pushed the community into the twentieth century by bringing a rail link through Roswell which connected fruit and livestock merchants to their markets. With a transportation hook up, the people followed. One of those individuals was Dr. Robert H. Goddard,
The New Mexico Military Institute, established in 1891, continues today to provide excellence in education. known today as the father of the modern rocket. Dr. Goddard tested his work in Roswell from 1930-1941.
6
Today the Roswell Museum and Art Center has his workshop on display in one of its special wings. The Roswell Army Flying School took in its first students in 1941. Later, the school became Walker Air Force Base, a support base for Atlas ICBMs and Strategic Air Command Center. The base eventually gave rise to the Roswell Industrial Air Center. In turn, a branch of Eastern New Mexico University and the Southern New Mexico Rehabilitation center set up operations at the center. The growing facility attracted other forms of industry and today remains a
focal point of the community. Called the Roswell Incident, this lingering mystery, which has made the Roswell community a household name around the globe, is embraced with a mix of the playful and serious by the city’s leaders and residents. 1997 marks the 50th anniversary of the event. The community is planning a world-class celebration with events and activities scheduled throughout the year. The Roswell Incident took place during the summer of 1947; and involved the military, local ranchers, residents... and news of a flying saucer captured by the military. The mysterious crash, possible recovery of an actual UFO and alien pilots, along with the apparent Army Air Force cover-up have been the subject of a great many documentaries, books and interviews. A recent movie titled Roswell played on Showtime and the Fox Network premiered Alien Autopsy. Many people have come forward who recalled or were involved in the incident since publicity about the events resurfaced during the 1980's and 1990s. The community has two museums devoted to the incident and UFO research in general. Outa Limits UFO Enigma Museum and the International UFO Museum and Research Center are both open to the public, offering exhibits, tours and written material on the subject. Aliens may continue to make Roswell famous throughout the world, but its 24 parks and playgrounds, its wide variety of cultural events, a local symphony, the Spring River Park and Zoo, the Roswell Community Little Theatre, the General Douglas L. McBride Military Museum, the Roswell Museum and Art Center, the Historical Museum for Southeast New Mexico, as well as a host of recreation opportunities, only add to the reasons so many people visit the area each year. A cow town no more, Roswell is on course for success at the turn of the millennium and beyond. Z

Energy, Determination and Focus: Our Formula For Success Economic powerhouse. Few communities are deserving of the words “economic powerhouse,” but the positive results from years of hard work and a tightly coordinated planning effort in Roswell are both obvious and measurable by anyone’s standards.
ECONOMY Lew Mollenkamp, Executive Director of Economic Development, flatly states “Roswell has a history of success and continues to build on it. We have a road map for tremendous economic progress by the year 2000 and are on track for even more success”. A strong and stable economic base, enviable facilities for expansion and the resources and infrastructure for development establish the foundation for Roswell’s economic growth. The people however, create the momentum. Chamber of Commerce CEO, Don Cox, The residents of Chaves County enjoy the good fortune of living in an area rich in natural resources, with a strong infrastructure for business.

says the people of Chaves County are “determined, energetic and focused on the community's goals. That makes the real difference”. The diversity of the area is recognized as a strength; the county’s history is one of accomplishment. “We are moving ahead,” says Mayor Tom Jennings, “but at a controllable pace that allows us to maintain our small town neighborliness as we go”. Plentiful water, fertile soil and a mild climate contribute to the generation of a $329 million dollar agricultural economic base in Chaves County. Dairy cattle lead the list in income, followed by beef cattle, sheep and Angora goats. More wool is sold from Roswell than from any single community in the United States. A newcomer to Chaves County is the rapidly growing ostrich industry. The birds are utilized for their meat, leather and plumage. The survival rate for hens is

higher in New Mexico than anywhere in the nation. Alfalfa hay leads the list of agricultural crops, followed by cotton, chile, corn and pecans. The growing dairy and alfalfa industries and aggressive City, County and Chamber leadership contributed to the establishment of a cheese industry in Chaves County. Leprino Food’s recent expansion has made it the nation’s largest producer of Mozzarella cheese. Four million pounds of milk are utilized daily. Other area food processing includes salsa, tortillas, lollipops and baked goods. Oil and gas exploration and production are also major contributors to the economic base of Chaves County. New Mexico holds the second largest natural gas reserve in the country and is ranked fourth in the nation in natural gas production. Chaves County is one of the major oil and gas producing counties in New Mexico. One of the largest producing
basins in the United States, the Permian Basin, extends from West Texas into Southeast New Mexico. Chaves County has over 1,500 wells producing in excess of 1.3 million barrels of oil and 36.6 billion cubic feet of gas annually. In addition, Roswell is home to many independent oil companies, geologists, engineers and petroleum landmen. School children are the primary beneficiary of oil and gas production in New Mexico. Funding for schools throughout the state is provided from royalties and severance taxes on oil and gas production. Recently, oil and gas generated annual tax revenues to New Mexico totalling $264 million and state royalties were $250 million. The local economy also benefits from gross receipts tax generated by drilling activities and related operations within the county. Without significant oil and gas revenues, New Mexico would have to rely on other sources of funding to support its excellent schools. a major part in Roswell’s economic growth. Numerous businesses have located at the RIAC. Longhorn Manufacturing, a fireworks company moved into bunkers at the air center the very day that it was transferred to the City of Roswell. Nova Bus, a manufacturer of city transit buses, is one of the community’s largest employers. The RIAC is home to a lollipop manufacturer, fiberglass manufacturers and aircraft repair and refurbishing companies. A new tenant, Patriot Aviation Services, Inc., has recently established its corporate headquarters at the Roswell Industrial Air Center. Operations include charter, cargo and feeder airline service, as well as a wide range of aircraft maintenance, overhaul, painting and related services. Aircraft testing and pilot training are also major businesses at the RIAC; Levi Strauss and Christmas by Krebs got their start at the air center and have since built new facilities on South Main Street. Construction of a new $24 million radar system and control tower will increase commercial and military air traffic, and of course, the potential for more industry. Roswell retail business, both locally-
owned and national chains, continue to expand. The modern Roswell Mall is located on North Main Street, and several other shopping centers have developed over the years. The downtown business district recently underwent a major reconstruction project which involved more than street repairs. Main Street was made more attractive with new lighting, benches, and red-brick crossings. The sidewalks and curbs were lowered for accessibility, and utilities and drainage improved. “The challenge,” says Mayor Jennings, “was accomplishing modernization without sacrificing the small-town atmosphere that is unique to Roswell and Southeast New Mexico”. The Roswell/Chaves County Economic Development Council of the Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Roswell are prepared to assist those wishing to locate businesses into the downtown area. Economic growth in Roswell and Chaves County is impressive. The individuals and groups directing its course are dedicated to sensible planning and proactive involvement. The words “economic powerhouse” are both fitting and well-deserved. Z

A Thriving, Active Community its the rich quality of life that has always drawn people to Roswell. Among other things, the cultural and educational institutions, the friendly, optimistic attitude of its residents and the healthy economy contribute to this and continue to make Roswell a great place to live.
LIFESTYLE One of the first things a visitor is struck by when touring Roswell is that active community involvement which makes this town a great place to live, play, learn and grow. Roswell’s citizens are rightfully proud of their excellent public schools and colleges as well as their business community, anchored in place by a strong Chamber of Commerce. Together these institutions have supported stable growth through planning, hard work and a can-do attitude which resonates beyond the community’s borders. Roswell’s mild weather throughout the year and abundant natural resources provide other elements necessary for a strong, healthy economy. Local businesses give out cash awards to both outstanding teachers and motivated pupils. One look at Roswell’s exemplary state and national averages in test results , and at local elementary schools which have computers in every classroom
,and it becomes clear that this community does more than talk about change and excellence. In an era when communities have dissolved into a disparate collection of individuals fighting for their piece of the American Dream, Roswell’s residents have remained a group that truly cares for one other. The teachers care about education for their children. The local businesses and government care and respond to situations which effect the quality of life in the community. The affordable cost of living is a tangible sign that this town places people first. In the realm of arts and culture, one local businessman founded an Artist-In-Residence program that has provided a “gift in time” for artists from around the country. Eleven galleries in the Roswell Museum and Art Center depict area history and development, displaying both contemporary and traditional art forms in their exhibits. The Roswell Symphony and the Roswell Community Little Theater are both celebrating their 38th seasons.

Events of cultural significance bloom in Roswell’s creative gardens throughout the year. From national juried arts programs to the Pecos Valley Fall Iris Show, from dances and theater productions to pottery shows, a trip to the zoo and a five ring circus, there is always something to do in Roswell. Sports play a healthy role in the city as well. In addition to Roswell’s three eighteen hole golf courses, the community boasts a number of parks for ball games and picnics, lakes for fishing and other water activities and the very successful annual Gus Macker 3on-3 Charity Basketball Tournament. Held over labor day weekend, this charity event draws hundreds of teams spread across dozens of courts and puts millions of dollars into the local economy. With its year-round recreational and cultural events, the fun and good times never have to stop in Roswell, New Mexico. From the standpoint of visitors and residents alike, life stays exciting. It may have something to do with Roswell’s location which offers quick and easy access to the biggest attractions in New Mexico. A trip to one of the world’s deepest caverns or skiing atop one of the tallest peaks in the Southwest is only a short drive. But while Roswell makes the perfect home base for enjoying regional tourism and recreation, the city itself has grown into a wonderful attraction in its own right. The drive to create a beautiful community was initiated by Roswell’s founding father, Captain Joseph C. Lea, who began planting elms and cottonwood trees along its streets more than a century ago. This tradition was handed down through the generations resulting in a city filled with trees and parks, carefully tended flowers, a sunken garden, play grounds, golf courses and miles of biking and hiking paths. An unexpected find is the Spring River Park and Zoo at the east end of the Spring River Corridor. This in-town attraction includes a youth fishing lake, an antique carousel, miniature train ride and a variety of

So much so that it has taken a somewhat controversial mystery, “The Roswell Incident”, which involves a possible UFO crash and recovery, and, through a balanced mix of the playful and serious, has built it into an international phenomenon. 1997 marks the 50th anniversary of the event. The city is planning a world class celebration with events and activities scheduled throughout the year. The Roswell Incident took place during the summer of 1947, and involved the military, local ranchers, residents... and news of a flying saucer captured by the military. The community has two museums devoted to the incident and UFO research in general. Outa Limits UFO Enigma Museum and the International UFO Museum and Research Center are both open to the public, offering exhibits, tours and written material. Attention around the globe has been so great for the marking of this 50th anniversary that 1997 in Roswell has become an attraction in itself. Visitors would be out of orbit to pass over Roswell, on a tour of the Southwest. Focusing away from the mysterious to the more sublime and poetic aspects of Roswell, this community’s Symphony Orchestra undertakes its 38th season in 1997. The organization has been led by conductor John Farrer since 1972. Performances take place in Pearson Auditorium on the campus of the New Mexico Military Institute. Chamber music is performed throughout the year in conjunction with openings and shows at the Roswell Museum and Art Center. Art in Roswell represents a broad spectrum from New Mexico’s own Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth to the modernistic forms of development found in Donald Anderson’s Artist-in Residence
program administered by the Roswell Museum and Art Center Foundation. The Roswell Museum and Art Center features 11 galleries of Southwestern art, history and technology. A special wing of the museum has been set aside as a re-creation of rocket pioneer Dr. Robert H. Goddard’s workshop. Rounding out the cultural aspects of the community is the Roswell Community Little Theater. Also entering its 38th season, this troupe of talented performers offers dramatic presentations of great plays which span a large number of time periods and geographic locations. On the subject of natural wonders and beauty found in Roswell’s surrounding environment, thousands of migrating snow geese create a spectacular event for visitors during the winter months at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The site offers easily accessible viewing platforms for bird watchers and photographers, as well as areas designated for hunters and fishermen. Roswell lays claim to the oldest park in New Mexico with the Bottomless Lakes region. This oasis for boating, fishing, swimming, hiking and camping, is located just outside of Roswell. Showers, bathrooms and electrical hook-ups add to a visitor’s enjoyment. Other area attractions which can be reached from Roswell and should be included on one’s tour of Southern New Mexico include the nation’s richest quarter horse race at Ruidoso Downs, White Sands, and the International Space Hall of Fame in Alamogordo, the Sunspot Observatory near Cloudcroft, the Billy-the-Kid National Historic Landmarks in Lincoln, New Mexico, Carlsbad Caverns and the Living Desert State Park in Carlsbad, petroglyphs and lava flows near Carrizozo and the home of Smokey Bear in Capitan. Roswell, New Mexico, has attractions to discover which are rooted firmly on the Earth, dealing with the history and beauty that is the Old West and others... which are simply out of this world. Z

oswell, New Mexico has a secret its been dying to share with the world, and with the world knocking at its door during the festivities surrounding the 50th anniversary of the “Roswell Incident” this year, the secret is getting out... Roswell has fantastic shopping selections and sumptuous cuisine at small town prices. As the global community gets smaller through advances in technology, Roswell has been able to offer the kind of merchandising which rivals big cities, but retain a small town atmosphere, pace and friendliness in which to browse and enjoy. The downtown area experienced a renaissance when it received a facelift from the Main Street Roswell project. New lighting and accessible sidewalks, benches and red brick crossings enhance the area and give it a fresh, attractive appearance. Bray-Moore Fashions, Dancing Tulips Interior Design and The Nut House are just a few of the specialty shops downtown which beckon the shopper to stop and take a second look. When strolling the merchant’s shops in the downtown area works up an appetite, visitors can’t go wrong with any of the many eateries. Ostrich specialties are featured at Marios, Steak sizzles at the Cattle Baron restaurant and fajitas are on the grill at Peppers. Where ever the stomach leads, its a safe bet that one won’t be disappointed. And for the perfect beverage after continued on p. 27

The golden years should be just that... a radiant time in one's life to set aside day to day worries, commitments and financial woes, and bask in the sunlight of a comfortable, active retired life. But, in today's world it becomes much harder to find that hidden sanctuary. Roswell, with its strong health and human services providers, mild climate, affordable land, housing, utilities and taxes, senior citizens programs, low cost of living and an array of recreational opportunities, could be just the place to end one's search for the good life. “We didn’t come here to retire; we came here to live,” is the slogan of Roswell’s growing population of retirees. And live well, if Roswell’s planners have anything to say about it. The community provides an abundance of senior citizen’s programs such as the Roswell Adult Center (RAC) the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) the Just Older Youth (JOY) program, the New Mexico Senior Olympics (headquarters in Roswell) Roswell’s Villa del Rey Retirement Village and a variety of other cultural and recreational programs and organizations. The Roswell Adult Center offers an impressive variety of activities for anyone over 18 years of age. It houses a woodworking shop, conference rooms, pool tables and a dance floor. Organizations such as the American Association of Retired Persons, the Geological Society and Woodmen of the World take advantage of the facility. In addition, more than fifty classes are taught at the center. Villa del Rey Retirement Village offers a warm, relaxing environment to call home. This 237 unit campus accommodates a variety of lifestyles. The Village provides its residents with the time and structure to

participate in organized activities, interact with neighbors, learn new skills and pursue personal interests. The Village is designed to suit the changing needs of older adults in a setting which is safe, supportive and balances needs with privacy. The Independent Living Apartments provide an ideal setting for active retirees. Although 24 hour emergency help is available, these homes do not extend personal care. They are equipped with free cable television, gas fireplaces, secured parking garages and washers and dryers. Villa del Rey also offers assisted living apartments. Meals are served restaurant style in an elegant dining room. Other amenities include a library, on-site beauty/barber shop and popular beverage area. The JOY center offers another haven for retirees. There are four JOY centers in Chaves county allowing people over 60 to maintain independence, fend off loneliness and participate in invigorating projects. The centers serve as sites for proper nutrition as well as providing recreation, transportation and assistance to seniors through
delivery of meals and care services to the home. Volunteer opportunities are as close as a phone call and come from a variety of sources, insuring the active retiree a chance to contribute in any organization of their choosing. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is sponsored by the Roswell Chamber of Commerce. It offers possibilities for volunteering in the museums, hospitals, libraries, civic and nonprofit organizations, just to name a few. Eastern New Mexico Medical Center is a recently expanded, 162 bed, hospital with a new Cancer Treatment Center. The medical staff includes a wide range of specialties. Chaves County Home Health Services is among those that offer senior citizens a variety of help within the surroundings of their own homes, and there are several nursing care facilities in the area. Whether its fishing, boating or sailing on one of several lakes which neighbor Roswell, a round of golf at one of the local courses or dinner at the country club, this part of the world offers an ample supply of resources to keep one fit, active and socially invigorated. Reaching For a Dream Motivated by his desire to repay the debt of hospitality and goodwill shown him by the community, Cla Avery brought the fundraising (and fun!) Gus Macker Basketball Tournament to Roswell.
LEADERSHIP
PROFILE countless numbers of people across the Southwest. As a teacher Avery was able to use his summer vacations to organize the event, but he is quick to downplay his own efforts, saying that he has surrounded himself with a crew of great people who, after a decade of tournament management, have become seasoned veterans. Building on the success of the Roswell Gus Macker Basketball Tournament, Avery and company and the Chamber of Commerce are kicking off the Gus Macker Gridiron 4-on-4 Flag Football competition. “There has been strong response for this event thus far”, said Avery. “What I like and find appealing in these tournaments is that its set up so that you play against people of like abilities. With the flag football, some girls are going to play this sport for the first time.” Avery pointed out that these are very intense and inclusive events. Roswell’s tournaments have grown in size and scope to include 630 participating teams in 1996, who were able to raise thousands of dollars for local youth programs while getting exercise and fun thrown into the bargain. “I don’t do this for financial reasons. The Gus Macker tournaments are my chance to give back to a community that I will always be indebted to for taking a chance on me and giving me employment. I hope it has been and will continue to be a positive thing for our young people.” With the addition of Flag Football, the community of Roswell understands how to make a good time even better. Avery said that if these tournaments can get young people interested in sports and keep them off the streets then he feels the programs have been a worthwhile success. Z
Roswell, New Mexico was the first city outside of Michigan to host Gus Macker, the largest 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament in the world, and art teacher Cla Avery’s initiative and desire to give back to a community which had welcomed and accepted him as one of their own played a big part in the event’s success. Avery, who teaches at Mountain View Middle School in Roswell, had always loved sports, playing both football and basketball as a teenager. During a summer vacation to Lowell, Michigan, where he’d attended school and met his wife Kathy, Avery took notice of a 3-on3 basketball tournament which had grown from a handful of people in Scott McNeal’s driveway back in 1974 to an event featured in Sports Illustrated. The wheels began to turn for Avery, who returned to Michigan in 1986 with a team of students from Roswell and a plan to pitch his community as a host city for the Gus Macker World Tour. “The credit really goes to the dozens, if not hundreds of people who have been involved with this event over the years,” explained Avery. “its a marvelous thing for our community. The town really comes alive with a festival atmosphere. We like to jokingly call this event the Woodstock of Basketball.” Beyond the hoopla and festivities, the Gus Macker Charity Basketball Tournament has been accepted with enthusiasm by the citizens of Roswell, as well as impacting the economy in a very powerful way and touching the lives of

What’s going On A Calendar by Season Roswell’s mild climate and spirit of fun makes for good times all year round. Every month this year has its new and annual events, but Roswell’s unique history promises to make 1997 extra special. July’s 50th Anniversary Celebration of the “Roswell Incident” will absolutely be an event not to miss.
SPECIAL
EVENTS “A year of events which will be out of this world!” That’s how the planners and community leaders behind the 50th anniversary of the “Roswell Incident”, the mystery which surrounds the possible crash and recovery of a UFO, are billing what is shaping up to be a worldwide phenomenon.
34
The story of what did or didn’t happen has been capitalized on by the national media. Films, books and television shows have pondered the questions, and sifted through “evidence”, which has included everything from metal shards thought to be pieces of the UFO, to a video tape of an Alien Autopsy. In honor of all the hoopla accompanying this story, the Roswell community has become part of the mys-

tery and good natured fun by scheduling parades and programs, creating a commemorative postage mark and playing host to a major UFO conference at their sparkling new Roswell Convention and Civic Center. On July 4, 1947, an object crashed northwest of Roswell in a severe thunderstorm. It was tracked by radar and the military moved in to clear the debris and make certain the public was not alarmed by the news of UFO activity near the world’s only base with nuclear weapons at the time. Unknown to the military was the fact that a local rancher had found another field of debris and reported it to the air base at Roswell which investigated the situation and issued a press release stating that a UFO pinatafest had crashed in Roswell. What followed was a series of coverups and the release of misinformation by the military and the government, residents sworn to secrecy and confusion which has persisted nearly fifty years. But with so much publicity and exposure
as of late, many witnesses are coming forward to tell their versions of the mystery, adding to the lore and excitement of this intergalactic puzzle. The truth is out there, and what-ever it might be, Roswell’s anniversary festivities are not to be missed.

Art and Culture...
Roswell’s art scene is second to none; with such names as Peter Hurd, Henriette Wyeth, Michael Hurd, Luis Jimenez & The Rogers Aston Collection, there’s something for everyone.
T
he depth of a community’s culture is determined by how strongly its residents support the arts organizations and their endeavors. Roswell’s track record in this area speaks of a community devoted to high caliber performances, diversity and growth. Thirty-seven years of symphony and community theater, fifty-nine years of established history and art exhibitions and twenty-nine years of artist-in-residence programs are statistics to brag about. The people of Roswell, with the support of industry and business, have made the arts a

cornerstone of the city’s development. Their combined dedication and efforts have transformed a dusty gambling town of a century ago into a community respected for its cultural enhancement. At the center of this growth has been the Roswell Museum and Art Center. The original missionstyle building which housed the museum, now the Founder’s Gallery, was established in 1937. The goal of the Founder’s Gallery is dedicated to the original paintings of renowned regional artists Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth; the most comprehensive collection of their works is housed on site. The Museum and Art Center is also known for its collection of

Marsden Hartley and John Marin. Regular displays of contemporary art can be found at the Museum. Many of these contributions have come from the Museum’s Artist-inResidence program. Founded by local artist and businessman Donald B. Anderson, this program is guided by the Museum’s Foundation Board. Donated works from the Artist-in-Residence program can be viewed at Anderson’s Gallery 409. Collections housed and displayed at the museum include the Rogers Aston Collection of American Indian and Western Art, the Native American and Hispanic Collections, and the Robert H. Goddard Collection of Liquid
Propellant Rocket Technology. Showing its flair for diversity, the Museum houses New Mexico’s largest planetarium in a separate but adjoining wing of the facility. Light shows and programs are offered throughout the year. The Roswell Symphony Orchestra has a tradition of providing high caliber performances under the steady hand of Maestro John Farrer, now in his twenty-first season as conductor. Each year the orchestra features internationally recognized guest artists such as Pianist Anton Nel, and violinist Sergiu Luca. The Roswell Community Little Theater will host five full productions in 1997 ranging from musical comedies to works by Neil Simon. The theater has its own in-town facility and offers new actors a chance to audition for its performances. In addition to these long standing cultural programs, the community features the Roswell Folklorico. This group performs colorful and authentic regional Mexican dances throughout the year at area fiestas and other events. These dances originate in every part of Mexico, and across New Mexico as well. A cultural tour of the city would not be complete without seeing The General Douglas L. McBride Military Museum housed on the campus of the New Mexico Military Institute. Also, impressive collections of local historic signi-ficance can be viewed at the Historical Center for Southeast New Mexico in the former home of James Phelps White. Roswell cannot be fully appreciated without discovering its art and culture, and only then will visitors see how talented and creative individuals have helped this town achieve prominence in the Land of Enchantment. Unique Opportunities. Roswell offers unique educational opportunities, both for pursuing specialized fields and for taking the leadership positions in tomorrow's world.
EDUCATION Education and the pursuit of excellence was at the heart of Roswell’s transformation from cow-town to a community ripe with culture and class. Roswell has a long standing tradition of offering unique educational opportunities both for those seeking knowledge in specialized fields and for more generalized studies for filling tomorrow’s leadership roles throughout the world. Historically, the oil and gas industries have been strong supporters of education throughout New Mexico by way of gross receipts tax and other contributions. Nowhere
is this tradition stronger than in Roswell, New Mexico. These industries have made it possible for young people from a variety of ethnic and economic backgrounds to pursue a high quality education with the latest equipment, textbooks and facilities. The New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell’s oldest educational facility, provides a structured education which develops critical thinking skills and strength of character. The institute, founded in 1891, is one of six military junior colleges in the nation as well as a four year college preparatory and state supported coeducational high school. Students live on a beautiful forty acre campus which boasts marching fields, a plush sporting complex, excellent golf facilities, a chapel, state of the art library and military museum. Pupils are taught in Gothic style
