ou may recognize her as the girl from the Alex and Ani ad, the fierce beauty on her blog shafiawest.com, or as your favorite trend-setting stylist. We recently sat down with the San Diego-based model Shafia West to discuss her success, her career aspirations, and her thoughts on this season’s fashion musthaves. One thing’s for sure, Shafia West is making waves and not just at the beach. ! " West began her modeling career at the age of 19, modeling for two years for an agency in Miami before leaving to pursue an opportunity with Summit Series, an entrepreneurial company that seeks to unite the leaders of today and tomorrow in surreal setting with immersive experiences designed to catalyze positive personal and collective growth. A couple years later, West moved to Boston, where she worked part-time as a stylist. As her styling career started to slow down a bit, she decided to pick up modeling again. She always dreamed of moving out to California and this summer she finally did with her husband Ryan, who is the photographer behind most the photographs on her blog.! " Since moving to San Diego, West’s modeling career has gained momentum. She has had the opportunity to work with Apple Music, Quintsoul Swimwear, and Styles for Less, to name a few. Her favorite shoot has been modeling for the photographer Dana Neibert at Jeff Goldstein’s house in Beverly Hills. West recalls being super excited for the shoot since iconic movies have been shot there such as The Big Lebowski and Charlie's Angels. Although West has gotten to work with great photographers in the industry, she says it would be her dream to someday get photographed by Russell James, the mastermind behind the Victoria’s Secret photo shoots. ! "Traveling, exposure to various cultures, social media and top fashion magazines such as!
5 Zieley /NOVEMBER 2015!
Vogue and Elle have created the backdrop for West’s inspiring style. With style icons such as Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Audrey Hepburn and Chiara Ferragni, West knows how to strike a classy and edgy balance that is absolutely eyecatching. ! "Before she began styling professionally, West was styling in her free time as a young girl. She reminisces on how her friends used to come over to her house and ask her what to wear, saying that it was these experiences in which her passion for styling developed. Since then, West has gone on to style some high-profile clients throughout the U.S. West admits that it is the clients who are full of energy and open to new ideas that make her love her job. She would love to start styling again in San Diego, and perhaps someday own a boutique, so be on the lookout! !
“You have to stay focused and be true to who you are.”! "Reflecting on her modeling career, she admits it is challenging always being on call: “One minute you’re sitting at lunch with your girlfriends and the next you are hopping in a cab and headed to the airport to go work a job you just booked an hour ago!” But while some might shy away from the constant uncertainty, West embraces the lifestyle with a sense of poise and confidence that can only be gained from time in the industry. When asked what advice she would give to aspiring models, she says, “Sometimes this industry can get the best of you. You have to stay focused and be true to who you are.” ! "
Harris Davey Photography!
"West remains focused by taking care of herself as her career demands, which means eating healthy; working out regularly; and getting facials, waxes, and mani-pedicures. West’s weekly workout schedule consists of going to the gym four to five times for 45 minutes, going on a long hike, and taking hot yoga classes once or twice a week. One of her diet secrets? “Drink lots of water and juice once a day!”!
“Sometimes you just have to go where the wind takes you”!
"! "! " Whether it be from following her dieting secrets, getting inspiration from her blog and Instagram, or following her throughout the world of fashion, West is definitely someone to keep an eye on. West has lived her career recognizing that “sometimes you just have to go where the wind take you.” One thing’s for sure, she has got heads turning, and they’re all looking West. When she’s not out modeling in L.A., or styling in San Diego, she’s working on her well-known style blog: sahfiawest.com. ! !
West’s Must-Haves! West is definitely well-versed in the styling and fashion world. But looking fabulous 24/7 isn’t always easy. Here are some of her favorites:!
CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT!
“I’m a sucker for a good bomber jacket.”!
FAVORITE TRENDS! “Favorite trends this season are the mod inspired look, like 70s type dresses. I've been noticing a lot of detailing on the back of tops and dresses too which I love.”!
SHOPPING HOT SPOTS!
“H&M, Zara, LF Stores, and online shopping on Revolve and Reformation as well as vintage stores and small local boutiques”!
3 MUST-HAVE PIECES ! “Leather jacket, black skinny jeans, and a good pair of black ankle boots!”!
Behind the Lens !
"Ryan West is the man behind most of Shafia West’s stunning photos. As soon as she started blogging, he had a reason to get back into photography again. Ryan West first became interested in photography as a kid, inspired by a lot of his grandfather’s work. Since then he hasn’t been able to put the camera down. He has been collecting vintage cameras for a while; and in the last couple of years, he has got his hands on some professional grade equipment. Ryan West enjoys shooting lifestyle and fashion photography the most, but he has a talent for landscape photography as well. With Ryan behind the lens and Shafia in front of it, make sure to stay on the look out for this power couple. !

Working major events and photographing for worldrenowned magazines, it would be an understatement to say that Lauren Engel is on the cusp of making it big in the photography world. Engel shares her secrets to success, the challenges she has faced and adventures along the way.!
Z: What was it like shooting backstage at New York Fashion Week? ! LE: Super hectic, you try to not obstruct anything that’s happening but still be able to snap a good pic. The show I enjoyed the most is Parke & Ronen —male models walking in underwear! But also the layout of the stage and the whole backstage itself was very open with large windows and sun shining in—great for pictures.! Z: You have worked so many incredible jobs. What has been your most memorable shoot?! LE: Beats By Dre. The whole day I followed around Dr. Dre and Kendrick Lamar, taking photos of them. Just seeing the world they’re in is crazy, and I got to have a tiny taste of it!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
!
ZIELEY: You’ve worked events like New York Fashion Week, GALORE and Adidas. Which has been your favorite to photograph at? ! LE: Definitely Galore, just as I was about to leave I bumped into Skrillex & Diplo. I went to support my friend perform and didn’t know so many celebrities would turn up—Nick Jonas was there and models that I’ve been following for ages like Ashley Smith.! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
!
!
Z: Those are some major names in the entertainment world. Do you ever get star struck? ! LE: Once in a while I get nervous when I’m shooting someone I really admire, but not often.!
! !
! Z: That’s incredible!! LE: Yeah, I was with them the whole day. First they had a conference in HMV (His Master’s Voice)—a record shop, where everything was timed, down to when Kendrick and Dre goes down the stairs. After that we had dinner at Admiralty, one of the business/shopping districts in Hong Kong, in the hotel where they were staying. I became friends with the Beats By Dre videographer who travelled with them and got to visit their room—it had a personal bathtub overlooking all of Hong Kong! Just before midnight we made our way to the club Volar where Kendrick was performing. Crazy day!! Z: Working with such huge clients, how much planning do you do for each shoot, and how much of your photography just happens naturally on set? ! LE: Normally I start planning shoots two weeks in advance; the best shoots often require good planning. It’s crazy how much work goes into planning a shoot—finding the perfect team, location, and model. Then everything else is chemistry on set; pictures turn out amazing when everyone is on the same page.!
Art Photography Z: What is the most difficult type of! photo to take?! LE: People who don’t want their pictures taken but for some reason I need to (laughs). I love working with people who have great energy and we’re on the same page with everything—we have the same idea with the mood of the shoot, type of poses, concept of makeup, styling.! Z: It seems like you do a lot of portrait photography. Do you like shooting portrait or landscape photos better?! LE: I’m definitely more of a portrait person—I love photographing people. Landscapes are fun to shoot too though because they make me dream and inspire me to travel.! Z: What is your favorite picture that you’ve ever taken?! LE: Even though I mainly focus on fashion photography, I like my travel pictures the most. My favorite one is shot from the top of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Z: When did you get your first camera?! LE: Around the age of 15. I got a small red Olympus camera and a year after that I moved onto getting a Canon 500D which I actually used for a year before getting my current Canon 5D Mark I— an investment but it will last me a while! Currently I also use Canon 50mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/2.5 lens to shoot most of my work. I might get a zoom lens but for now the primes have me all set!! Z: You’ve been in photography for a long time, was there anything specific from your childhood
13 Zieley /NOVEMBER 2015!
that made you interested in photography? ! LE: I got inspired to start photography from seeing Nirrimi’s pictures. The way she tells stories is amazing. I love the way she photographs her lover, strangers she meets on her way, and her daughter… it’s stunning. ! Z: Looking back at when you first started photography, is there any advice you wish you were given or that you would give to aspiring photographers now? ! LE: To be more picky with what you shoot. It’s cliché, but honestly quality over quantity. My portfolio now is less than a quarter of all the shoots I’ve done.! Z: What do you think has been the biggest contributor to your success? ! LE: Timing. To shoot with the right people at the right time. I had to catch bloggers before they went overseas and became internationally known or models before they got big.! Z: Does anyone in particular inspire your work? LE: Mostly photographers: Kesler Tran, Henrik Purienne, Ted Emmons, Zoey Grossman. I can look at their work forever!! Z: At this point in your career you’ve already accomplished more than most. What would be a shoot that you’ve loved to do, but haven’t gotten the chance to yet? ! LE: Probably if I could shoot a campaign for Urban Outfitters or Nasty Gal.! Z: What do you enjoy most about being a photographer? ! LE: Meeting and photographing people who! change the world.! ! As her various accomplishments, drive, and !adventurous spirit show, the sky’s the limit for Lauren Engel. Check out some highlights of her photography on the next page. For more of Engel’s work, visit her website: www.engelauren.com. We can’t wait to see what she does next! Z!

"When you've lived in the same place for a while, you begin to spend your weekends doing the same tired routine. As a child growing up in the 80s and 90s, I was told that education provided the keys to the world. Work hard in school and education can pave the way to whatever you want. This came not only from my parents, but from educators, and society as a whole. When we talk about “bettering” ourselves, there is a ton of pride in how that relates to education and career goals. Going to college once all but guaranteed a job as well as statistically increased average salaries. ! "Well meaning politicians and advocates fought fiercely for programs that helped with scholarships and to help create a path to college in which one’s class or background or family’s educational history would not hold them back. Upon graduating from high school in 2000, loans seemed to be the magical answer for many to pursue what they wanted - be it for an in-state tuition (which adds up quickly) to those taking out $150k+ loans to attend private universities. ! "Meanwhile, as I watch our country and the world fight over race and religion, it sometimes feels like nothing has changed from the news reports from when I was a kid. Not that we haven't made major strides in equality from the workplace to marriage licenses, but all agree we have a long way to go.! "I look at the strife in the U.S. and abroad and many also agree that this comes down to inequality for basic needs and income. Empower people and give them access to what they need at fundamental levels. Give them the chance to truly achieve and move ahead. We were told Education is the answer, and no doubt, that is a huge part of it. However sadly, as more and more stories reveal, a scholarship may not be enough to solve society’s problems. Many students put into that situation are at a disadvantage from others for various reasons. Whether they’re going to bed hungry at night (seriously) or didn’t realize they could ask their professors for one on one time as opposed to their classmates who went to college prep high schools as I read yesterday in The New York Times.! "Traditional education is a great start to give everyone a fair chance, but clearly isn’t enough. !
Meanwhile, we have a shortage of programmers in! what truly is a whole new world. I run a start-up called Dreamfuel and am very up front that I am not a technical founder. I have plenty of other strengths to lead the company with. But coding is an obvious and specific skill that is of course crucial to the tech world, which more often than not, is just becoming the world.! "! ! !
“Traditional education is a great start to give everyone a fair chance, but clearly isn’t enough.” ! !
!
I recently took a basic coding class to deepen my vocabulary, understanding and empathy with our technical team. Just like little kids soaking up a foreign language, the basics we learned in a 101 fashion was something that was made for kids. Code your name, code a color, etc. Not to mention that like most children, I loved figuring things out as a kid. One’s mind is a sponge and not clouded or molded into who we are as adults yet. It used to be the cool thing to have one’s kid learn a foreign language. As Google Translate and similar platforms evolve, we will all be of one language at some point. Yes, that is sad with regard to the beauty and culture of languages, but no one is taking that away. Just like the digital era hasn’t killed vinyl, those who love it, will seek it out. But for the rest of us? There are ever developing languages of code to learn and create within.! !
!
"How do we really give kids a shot who might be the first in their family to break out of poverty? Teach them how to code. Start young. Make it fun. Kids can graduate from HIGH SCHOOL into 100k/year jobs if they are into it ! and want to. Teach people who need a viable skill instead of racking them with debt on a major they may not be entirely sure of when they enroll in the first place.! "I love college. I love education. When I was a kid, I thought that if I was a trust fund baby, I would get as many degrees as possible because I loved learning as much. And that’s great for those who want to pursue that path. But for the kid looking to get out, to really have options, to be a part of the future and help their family - learn to code. By supporting organizations such as Code.Org, Yes We Code, NYC Gen Tech and others who are instilling these skills into kids at a young age where they can soak it up and become second nature, we are empowering our youth and future generations. Yes, let’s take breaks to read and exercise and interact with our fellow humans. But if you want to change the world? Start by getting coding education into grade schools, particularly in low income neighborhoods. Students who are drawn to it may find themselves graduating high school into a lucrative job instead of racking up debt via loans or feeling lost even if they receive traditional educational help. I can’t wait to see what this type of thinking produces for both individuals and our societies around the globe.!
Emily White is a Brooklyn based entrepreneur; most notably as the co-founder of Dreamfuel, a crowdfunding platform for athletes, as well as Whitesmith Entertainment. Tips and tricks for staying motivated through your steepest of workout/ healthy lifestyle slumps.! ! If you’re anything like me, you like starting the
week off strong. Pumping some iron, reminding yourself you’re super woman/man, getting in that protein packed breakfast and thinking “I got this” is a pretty great feeling.! ! Then, drum roll please… Our good friend “Thursday” comes along and its sidekick “The Weekend” and we’re looking at those machines in the gym like… Really, today? I’m a bit sore. And a healthy dinner? I deserve to let loose tonight. We have all been there. Some weeks we talk ourselves out of our long-term goals and talk ourselves into short-term satisfaction. And again, if you’re like me, that happens pretty often. So, I started to work on it. And, I think you can too!!
This is the action plan I followed to find my focus, boost my happiness and feel more empowered about my choices.!
Figure out Why!
Answer those questions above. Realizing that fitness and a healthy lifestyle are important to me because of how it makes me feel rather that how I look was possibly the most important “ah-hah” moment along this journey.!
!
I asked myself, why do I like to workout? What does it do for me? How do my long-term desires fit into my daily routine? How do I show up for myself when I really don’t feel like showing up for anything but a big bowl of pad Thai and a lot of Netflix?! ! !
!
23 Zieley /NOVEMBER 2015!
Write it Down!
I keep my “10 Commitments” on my mirror in my bathroom so that I can repeat them to myself every day when I’m getting ready. I also use expo markers to write notes on my mirror that keep me motivated.!
Fitness! Celebrate your successes! Worked out today? Celebrate it. Every step you take towards living a healthier happier lifestyle is worth celebrating. And the more you appreciate your successes the more likely you are to continue living a healthy lifestyle. You are doing your best and that is always MORE than enough. !
Keep a Routine!
Always have your trusty routine on the back burner for when you need it. Nothing is wrong with being a little inflexible when it’s time for you to center yourself.!
Mix it Up! try indoor cycling?
Want to Who cares if it doesn’t fit this week’s cardio schedule? Go for it! You could love it! Need to step back and do a bit of yoga as a break? The only person you have to please is yourself. !
Mine is: “Everything in my life is exactly the way it should be. I have everything that I need and I am everything that I will ever need. I trust that my life is perfect for me.”!
Successes Take Time!
Be compassionate and know that success takes time. Not every day is perfect, not every workout will be what you expect…Show yourself that it’s okay- in fact, it’s incredibly normal! You will get to where you want to be!
Listen. !
Listen to your body, your mind and your heart. The best is when they’re all working in tandem. When we feel all of our emotions and embrace them, it’s exponentially more likely for you to be successful in overcoming challenges and setting positive intentions for yourself. !
Repeat the mantra that resonates with YOU.!
Endorphins = Happiness! one thing a day that makes you Do extremely happy. Some days, that may just be your workout but lots of days, it will be MORE. The happier you are, the more likely you are to encourage that happiness long term. Take a walk after dinner, enjoy a meal on your own, workout with a friend, watch a movie, cook, do your laundry (I don't know? I’m not judging what makes you happy), just do it! You’ll feel better, more refreshed and aligned. !
Be mindful.!
Stay present; enjoy the moment and always practice trusting yourself. Like you say on your Mondays, YOU GOT THIS. !
