ONE: KEEP ON TREKKIN’ b y K E V I N O ’ S U L L I VA N It was late spring, the tail e n d o f t h o se insufferable months when t h e m o u n t a i n passes are open and th e p o p u l a t i o n of Kathmandu swells w i t h a m a t e u r mountaineers, that I finall y h e a r d f r o m Roark. I hurriedly tore open t h e e n v e l o p e , eager for news of my friend , h a l f - h o p i n g that I might find an invit a t i o n o f so m e sorts, to leave the mountain s a n d j o i n m y itinerant friend on some new a d v e n t u r e . The last I saw of him, he w a s sl i p p i n g o u t of a waterfront dive in Da N a n g , w i t h t h e child bride, or, more likely, d a u g h t e r, o f one of the drunken Viet Ve t s r e m i n i sc i n g about the battles of their you t h a t t h e n e x t table. I left the bar soon af t e r, b e f o r e h e r defection was noticed and h o st i l i t i e s b r o k e out anew. I left Da Nang e a r l y t h e n e x t day, to begin my journey ho m e , w i t h o u t a chance to see my friend aga i n . What I found was not quite t h e i n v i t a t i o n I had hoped for. It was a sum m o n s. Ro a r k was in the neighborhood, h e w r o t e , a n d I was to join him at a hotel i n Ch e n n a i a t once. Although Chennai w a s m o r e t h a n 2,000 miles away, and monso o n r e l i e f w a s around the corner, I could n ’t sa y n o . I didn’t want to. Although ke e p i n g u p w i t h Roark can be exhausting, o n e n e v e r t i r e s of his company so, without h e si t a t i o n , I settled up some unfinished b u si n e ss, a n d prepared to leave for Tamil N a d u st a t e , o n the southeastern tip of India .

TWO:

DOUBTING THOMAS W h e n I stepped off the plane in Chennai, t h e m o i st heat almost knocked me over. T h e f i r s t order of business was to find a “ g e n o ” t o take me into the city. A darks k i n n e d driver waved m e over to his old H i n d u A mbassador. I climbed into the c a r a n d gave him the address of a hotel i n M y l a pore, an old ne ighborhood in the s o u t h e r n part of the city, not far from the a i r p o r t , which was a good thing since the A m b a s s ador did not have air conditioning.I n o t i c e d that the Tamil driver was wearing a c r o s s . He told me h e belonged to the o l d e s t C hristian sect on the subcontinent, o r i g i n a l l y converted by St. Thomas the Apostle.

“ D o u b t i ng Thomas was in India?” I asked.

“The chur c h ? ”

“ Ye s , ” h e answered with some annoyance. “ H e w a s martyred here by angry Brahmins. H i s t o m b is by the hotel.”

“This is w h e r e h e b u i l t h i s c h u r c h , ” h e said, whic h se e m e d d o u b t f u l t o m e .

“A tem p l e of Shiva,” he replied dismissiv e l y. “ T h e r e a r e m a n y su c h temples i n Ta m i l N a d u . ” We drove a w h i l e l o n g e r b e f o r e t h e d r i v e r quickly b r a k e d . “ T h e r e , ” h e sa i d e x c i t e d l y. THREE: Roark had left a note at the f r o n t d e sk , asking me to meet him at a r e st a u r a n t not far from the St. Thomas C a t h e d r a l . I walked over, from my hotel an d r e a c h e d the restaurant at the appointed t i m e . A s soon as I entered I was accost e d b y t w o uniformed thugs, and dragge d t o w a r d s the back of the darkened room . S t r u g g l e was useless as the two captors w e r e q u i t e strong and had a tight grip on m y a r m s. I noticed that young men in p r i so n g a r b were leaving the kitchen with p l a t e s f u l l of food. I was soon deposited at a d a r k e n e d booth were I recognized my o l d f r i e n d by his Cheshire cat smile. M y c a p t o r s released me and Roark clasped m e i n a bone-breaking bear hug. My captors laughed jovially, a s Ro a r k handed them a fistful of rupees. “What’s the name of this place , Mi d n i g h t Express?” I asked. “This was Simone’s idea,” he sa i d . “ A private joke, you might say.” Just then an olive-skinned, d a r k - h a i r e d beauty rose from the table and st e p p e d into the light. I had seen Roark w o r k h i s magic on beautiful women b e f o r e b u t this one belonged to a class of h e r o w n . “Sometimes, when Roark is not so n i c e . Or reluctant to do me a favor, I h a v e t o remind him of Dakar,” she said. “She won’t let me forget it.” Monsoon Church

PRISON BOUND “Only when I need your help . ” Roark looked at me and sh o o k h i s h e a d . “Women can be ruthless!” “And resourceful.” It was clear to me that Roa r k a n d S i m o n e had a long history. Their b a n t e r w a s a t turns playful and spikey. N e i t h e r w a s i n thrall or intimidated by th e o t h e r a n d a t times there was a fraternal a sp e c t t o t h e i r relations, which left a ti n g e o f i l l i c i t eroticism when their fingers w o u l d l i g h t l y touch. I had a gut feeling th a t i f e v e r t h e r e was a match for my friend, h e h a d f o u n d i t in Simone.

Vautrin was sitting in a chair when we entered, his head obscured by a cloud of pungent smoke, as Dr. Amir, the shop’s proprietor, carefully added a new line to a lengthy text that began, with already faded ink, at the top of his arm. Since I don’t read French I could only guess that it was an excerpt from a poem, an aphorism, or prayer that held special meaning to the Frenchman. Vautrin seemed tightly bound, ready to spring at any moment. His lean, chiseled face betrayed no emotion and a Gauloise seemed to be permanently fixed to his lip. I remember Roark telling me, back in Hanoi, that the toughest customer you’ll find, anywhere in the world, is a F renchman.
