ABANDONED AREAS
existing houses demolished houses abandoned existing houses
A lot of the houses in detroit were abandoned. a significant number of abandoned houses that were abandoned have been demolished. this has produced neighbourhoods which are scarcely occupied and developed. such neighbourhoods become gaps in the residential fabric of the city.
boundaries, disturbances and gaps
understanding detroit
The individuals in communities started buying or just taking the empty lots near their homes. despite the fact that there are still as few homes on a street as before, the areas are taken care of. the spaces read as occupied to those passing by.

ROADS
detroit has a heavy infrastructure of roads, highways and belts. with the population shrinking, empty blocks are being left over cushioning the roads. this creates many unpleasant effects including visual and audible ones which decrease the quality of life of the neighbourhood. the road system, though once useful, is now wasteful and not as efficient. it's also contributed to by the public transportation system..

the community hasn't dealt with this condition in any direct way. simple things like planting trees and shrubs can help the area look fuller and more vibrant environment.

FACTORIES
detroit was an auto city. it grew because of the auto industry and now that the industry has moved out it's presence remains in the abandoned facď€ tories and warehouses. when the factories were operating, they were in use and populated for, at least portions of the day. now that that's not the case, they've become empty channels which are visually unappealing as well as way out of the scale of the residential neighbourhoods that surround them. not only do they create gaps in the city by being monstrously ugly and huge, they create an isolation which is a looming presence in the city.

INDUSTRIAL WASTE LAND
as a result of factories and other developments which might have been abandoned due to economic reasons, pieces of industrial wasteland were left over. like factories, they present a different scale for the user. that scale is large. because it's possible that future development will occur at these sites, it's not necessary to displace them. a link is needed to connect the different neighbourhoods that are on different sides of said wastelands and this can be done by creating green corridors.
