News 2015
Since its origins in the 1970’s, BD Barcelona Design has always been an atypical company. Its founders and still current owners, who come from an architectural background rather than the business field, have oriented BD’s production from the very start by cultivating beauty, in some cases above function. Accompanied with artisanal processes instead of mass production, the new products always have more proximity to art than industrial design. Characterised by superior quality, short-series productions (and on occasion limited editions), and unique pieces due to crafted manufacturing. In the 80’s, BD pleasantly surprised by editing Gaudí’s furniture for his famous buildings and in the early 90’s, BD again astounded by introducing an exclusive first collection of furniture and lamps designed by Dalí. More recently, Collections and Designers with an accentuated artistic profile such as Jaime Hayon, Cristian Zuzunaga and Xavier Mañosa continue to point the way where design and art meet together.

Jaime Hayon Gardenias Indoor + Monkey side table + Natural Finishes Jaime Hayon (Madrid, 1974) continues to be one of the most recognized Spanish designers on the international panorama. When in 2006 we decided to opt on his designs for the successful Showtime Collection, he was still an emerging youngster with an artistic profile which was quite common back then, which he, as the years have gone by, has refined. The Gardenias Collection is the second grand one for BD and has thrived on the same virtues as the first. It has quality, personality, elegance, the right point of romanticism and lots of versatility, just right for the home as well as contract. The collection is divided for outdoor pieces, with the purpose of recuperating classic elegant furniture for the garden with contemporary style, and the indoor collection, that includes an armchair and a sofa with a sophisticated imagery, now presented with new finishes and upholstery. The Gardenias adds now a side table carrying his distinct hallmark. The Monkey side table is a useful sculpture. Made of solid architectural concrete for indoor and outdoor use. We also present the new finish for the Multileg Cabinet, Lounger and Low Lounger armchairs in Natural oak.

Cristian Zuzunaga Dreams cabinet A new cabinet’s arrival to our collection signed by Cristian Zuzunaga (Barcelona, 1978). An atypical designer with a graphic art profile having a language of it’s own, the key being the pixel which has given him fame and international recognition. He has said that his style is fruit to a dream he had, which is precisely the name given to this piece: Dreams. The cabinet is presented in three versions. A coloured one, black and or white which are all additions to the collection of BD’s “cabinets”. A typology of furniture that was lost toward the end of the last century and which in the last few years, has been recuperated with the same function as always, to be a container, but differentiated in character. Each one is distinct for each project: Multileg (Jaime Hayon), Tout Va Bien (Antoine et Manuel), Free Port (Martí Guixé), Shanty (Doshi Levien). Few pieces allow for interventions with such personality without depleting the function for which they have been created. They convert into sculptures for the lounge area of a home, or the foyer of a hotel.

Xavier Mañosa Fang Collection An extraordinary table by a creator out of the norm. Xavier Mañosa (Barcelona, 1981) is in this order a potter, artist and designer. He inherited the artisanal tradition and family workshop and has found his place in contemporary ceramic art, designing pieces with his own characteristics. To demonstrate, this table has been modelled for BD with his own hands. Each leg is uniquely different. They are made of porcelain stoneware at high temperatures to guarantee resistance and durability. It’s presented in two versions. One is where the legs are in a black enamel, brilliant finish and the oak table top tinted in black to match. The other has a raw finish with a natural oak top. For this version, the material for the legs used is visible with no additional coatings. They are just as they are when they come out of the oven at 1250º. This is where the table’s name, Fang is from, which in Catalan means ‘clay’. This series of tables is complemented with a new collection of vases made with the same materials. They are deliberately made imperfect to ensure that each one is different. They are also unique in that the artist’s workmanship is evident.
