British Designers Committee is husband and wife Harry Richardson and Clare Page, who met whilst studying fine art. Their interest in ‘humourous and beautiful projects’ has led to commercial products as varied as lighting, rugs, ornaments, furniture, textiles and wallpaper, whilst their London based studio also maintains an art practice producing self-initiated and commissioned works born of academic interest. Each individually commissioned Kebab Lamp is assembled from an eclectic mix of found objects and keepsakes, a careful juxtaposition of both common and high-brow items. The process of placing ancient pots, birdcages, plumbing parts and figurines together to form a skewered mix of texture and form is an art that takes the duo weeks to put together. In all of their work Committee’s main aim is to embed a cerebral investigation into items that nevertheless remain simply dedicated to beauty, function and a sense of poetry of their own.

Israeli Designers Born 1976 Design duo Shay Alkalay and Yael Mer set up Raw Edges, a London-based design studio, after both graduating with a Masters in Product Design from the Royal College of Art. Yael’s main focus includes turning two-dimensional sheet materials into curvaceous functional forms, whereas Shay is fascinated by how things move, function and react. Alkalay and Mer have received several highly respected awards including The British Council Talented Award, iF, Wallpaper* Design Award 2009, Elle Decoration International Design Award in 2009 and the 2009 Designer of the Future Award from Design Miami Basel. In recent projects Endgrain and Herringbones, the duo have experimented with colour, using the grain of the wood to carry the dye through the timber. In 2015 the Stack-Up Series used many different materials, textures and colours to present new unique bespoke editions of the design. Alkalay’s Stack is included in the permanent collection of MoMA in New York.

British Artist Born 1966 A painter, designer and sculptor, Richard Woods is a graduate of The Slade School of Fine Art. His well-documented work crosses boundaries between art, architecture and design and is most often made up of exaggerated, garish representations of traditional British architectural and interior motifs, such as wooden flooring, chintz wallpapers, crazy paving or red bricks. These “logos of reality” are created using traditional woodblock techniques and then applied as a second skin covering interior floors and walls. His work has been applied to a courtyard in the Henry Moore Project at the Venice Biennale 2004, to a residential building in upstate New York 2006, and a store interior for Comme des Garcons in Osaka in 2003. In these instances, Woods’ art expresses an extreme version of Englishness by taking over a space and saturating it with iconography. Woods has also recently produced work for the London Underground, Paul Smith, collaborated on architectural projects in Sicily and Tokyo and is currently working on a host of projects including further architectural commissions in New York, London and Seoul.

Terrence Woodgate & John Barnard

British Design Engineer Born 1946 John Barnard is one of the most innovative racing car design engineers of his generation. Barnard’s first experience in the limelight came when his Chaparral 2K chassis won the prestigious Indianapolis 500. He pioneered and built the world’s first carbon fibre monocoque, winning three consecutive Formula One world championships for McLaren. Uniquely he has been technical director⁄ chief designer at both Ferrari and McLaren. Headhunted by Ferrari he pioneered for them the first hydro electronic gearbox, a system that is now used by all Formula One teams. His system of using paddles on the steering wheel and an automatic clutch has now migrated to road cars. Asked to re-join Ferrari in 1992 he designed and built Ferraris in the UK from 1993-1997. His Ferrari 641, one of the most beautiful Ferrari racing cars, is in the MoMA, New York permanent collection. His influence can be seen in every single car on the grid today.

Architect 1950–2016 Zaha Hadid was the first woman to be awarded the distinguished Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004 and is internationally known for her built, theoretical and academic work. Her recognisable and remarkable style is characterized by fragmented geometry and bold fluid forms. Hadid’s outstanding contribution to the architectural profession has been acknowledged by the world’s most respected institutions. In 2010 and 2011, her designs were awarded the Stirling Prize – one of architecture’s highest accolades – by the Royal Institute of British Architects. In 2010, UNESCO also gave Hadid the title of Artist for Peace, while the Republic of France honoured her with the Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. TIME Magazine has included her in their list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World, and in 2012, Zaha Hadid was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Her legacy continues through the many projects in construction and in the extraordinary talents of the Zaha Hadid Architects team, which is still based in London, where Hadid lived and studied.

Celebrated architect Amanda Levete took inspiration from the traditional Chesterfield sofa for this futuristic design. Sophisticated architectural drawing technology created the soft, modern contours and organic form of the Chester Limited Edition. The complex curves of the design rely on the most time-honored and traditional skills of upholstered furniture manufacturing.

The Drift Limited Edition bench is constructed from layered beech plywood that is then hand carved. The layered wood reveals the complex contours and curves that architect Amanda Levete is so wellknown for. The coupling of hand-carved wood with a form created in architectural software produces an object that challenges preconceptions of how wood can work as a contemporary material.

The Drift Bench is a masterclass in complex curves, angles and subtracted spaces. Inspired by a piece of found driftwood, Amanda Levete translated her organic and highly sensual architectural language into a condensed form. The naturally fluid lines soften angles without dissolving the defined outline associated with traditional sculptural forms.

Amanda Levete’s West Limited Edition bench looks like an elegant calligraphic scrawl magnified into a three-dimensional form and explores the relationship between solid and void. It is one continuous line that has been twisted, folded exaggerated and reduced to express the forces on the seat. The piece appears to be spontaneous but is the result of a complex design process. It is invisibly fixed to one side of the corner and gently touches the other side, where it comes to rest on the floor. It is made of high quality, laminated wood, like the deck of a yacht. The grain of the wood is revealed as it stretches, accentuating the curvature of the form.

Each table in the Iris Limited Edition series is constructed from a single geometric component, which is machined from solid aluminium and repeated to form a tessellated ring. Colour is integral to the design of the Iris series. Each of the variations has its own specific colour spectrum. The composition of colours, whether a gradated run or series of sharp tonal differences, has been handpicked by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby to capture the beauty of the colour chart in a three-dimensional form. Using circular forms means that the colour patterns are continuous with no starting point and no end.

The Kebab Lamp Edition Series is an ongoing experiment by Clare Page and Harry Richardson of Committee. Each unique lamp is hand made by skewering a selection of found objects, antiques and other miscellany no longer in use. Built as a totem of improbably varied materials, the lamps are composed to contain stories and meanings. This concept behind the lamps was born of Committee’s interest in the way people relate to and value objects and the lamps play with this sense of value as fine porcelain and plastic come together to form a unique sculptural composition with its own integrity.

Jaime Hayon took inspiration from Tudor England and imagined a large and impressive dining table to represent Henry VIII, with his six queens transformed into the dining chairs that surround and pay homage to the historic king. As a clever reference to a rich part of British history, each Tudor Chair has its own upholstery, finishing and personality. The diamond and leaf pattern, found in the detailed leather stitching, has been in use since the 1500s.

The ergonomics and bold symmetry that make Konstantin Grcic’s Cape Sofa so usable are clothed in loose folds of soft fabric. The sofa can be made cosy in winter and light and comfortable in summer, with interchangeable covers. Whether smart or casual, it is possible to customise the Cape with bespoke fabrics and a range of over 100 tape and trim colours. Unique in its character, the Cape Sofa is an ingenious way to draw attention to a special textile or subtly bring a dramatic colour into an interior with a bright edge tape.

Composed entirely of foam, without any hard internal structure, Mollo’s simple form provides exceptional comfort. Comfortably seating seven, one on the seat and two on each of the three sides, the Mollo’s size and volume ensure its prominence and make it a preferred choice for cavernous and triple-height spaces. Designed by Philippe Malouin to be used as a seating island, the Mollo can provide both privacy in quiet moments and the means to integrate a space and initiate conversation at busy social events.

In this innovative design, Shay Alkalay challenges our perception of what a drawer unit can be. Individual, multicoloured, ‘floating’ drawer units are built up to create a tower of drawers that can be pushed and pulled in both directions. This will often result in a random and irregular composition that is both fascinating and unusual to the eye. Appreciated from all angles as a sculptural object as well as an entirely functional, practical item of furniture, Stack creates a rich and wonderful spectacle of colour and form.

Richard Woods is renowned for his work with garish and repetitious motifs, which are often abstractions and interpretations of domestic patterns. Designer Sebastian Wrong teamed up with Woods for Established & Sons’ programme of collaborations where individuals from two creative fields work together. Woods’ block printed motifs were applied to Wrong’s utilitarian cabinets. The Wrongwoods storage units are reminiscent of 1950s furniture – a fitting vehicle, as much of Woods’ work is based on a nostalgia for mid-century domestic interiors.

An elegant equation of modern and traditional craftsmanship, the Lighthouse balances a Venetian mouth-blown glass shade on an industrially engineered aluminium arm, weighted by a marble column. Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec cleverly draw our attention to the precariousness of the equilibrium while providing a sturdy, sculptural and enchanting light. The Lighthouse now stands in prestigious museum collections and is sure to become a prized heirloom, handed down to the next generation of collectors.

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s spirited challenge to the formal, structured sofa, Quilt offers character alongside all the benefits of presentable reception and lounge seating. Built along generous proportions, the Quilt armchair is an irresistible reading enclave while the Quilt sofa is the perfect place to curl up together on a cold winter’s night. The strong, glass-fibre shell is upholstered with a honeycomb-like stitched pattern filled with individual foam inserts. These geometric components are both mathematical and decorative in design, while their soft plump fullness offer superior comfort. The springy, high-tech stretch-fabric upholstery comes in both bright intense colours and a calm sophisticated tonal mélange range.

This pioneering collaboration between two Royal Designers for Industry, furniture designer Terence Woodgate and Formula 1 racing car designer John Barnard, fuses advanced engineering and artful design. A true engineering accomplishment, the Surface Table Limited Edition (and Surface Table) use state-of-the-art motorsport technology to exploit the inherent rigidity and strength of carbon fibre. The twomillimetre-thick edge and long span defy the eye with improbable lightness and solidity. Radius corners, round legs, domed feet and rounded edges accentuate the slimness and seamlessness of the design.

The magnificent Aqua Table Limited Edition by Zaha Hadid is a monolithic, fluid form finished with a silicon-gel top that moulds into undulations within the table. The table’s arches and asymmetrical curves imply a liquid quality that is rendered even more vivid by its deep pools of aquamarine or translucent white. Hadid’s acclaimed signature style is beautifully articulated in this dining room sculpture.

The Aqua Table Unique Limited Edition of 1 is a seminal work on the relationship between design and art. Zaha Hadid re-appropriated the iconic form of the production Aqua Table and commissioned it to be re-worked in precious marble. Carved from an exquisite solid piece of Carrara marble this grand interpretation can be measured against the original without bias. This design is challenging, daring and the work of one of the greatest talents the contemporary design industry has known.

Zaha Hadid’s voluptuous Aqua Table is an uninterrupted whole – a curious and curvaceous form that invites viewers to engage with it. Standing as an impressive centrepiece it delivers a stylish focal point in any space. The three fin-like legs of the Aqua Table appear to be in motion and register as gradients on the gently undulating tabletop. Eight coats of highgloss automotive paint are applied and polished by hand to create a striking surface capable of reflecting light in flowing pools and waves.

Part of the Seamless collection by Zaha Hadid, the Serif Limited Edition series of shelves are dynamic forms that interact when combined. These wall-mounted masterpieces are a fluid extension of the drawn line that has been translated into three dimensions. The dramatic flip chromatic paint is used for the Serif Limited Edition set of four shelves, while the individual Serif Limited Edition shelves are issued in high-gloss white.

Curvaceous and tactile, the combined Nekton form splits into four distinctive sculptural seats. Scattered through a space or grouped in clusters, this design provides a flexible, unified seating landscape. The recognisably flowing aesthetic of world-renowned architect and designer Zaha Hadid is expressed in the connected shapes and surfaces. Most at home in the contemplative environment of museums and art galleries it is also an ideal installation piece for large entrance halls and viewing platforms.

The Swarm chandelier is composed of 16,000 black crystals which make up a complex pattern of forms in Zaha Hadid’s trademark style of fluid, spatial dynamics. The effect is of a slow motion, controlled explosion where individual, organic forms with seemingly little relation are brought together as a monumental whole in the chandelier. A feat of manufacturing, the chandelier was designed using sophisticated digital modelling tools with each crystal being meticulously hand threaded.
