Projects as playing fields How blessed are architects and designers! For they understand just how unprecedentedly development-oriented hotel groups have been for the past few years. To achieve this conquest of new territories, the latter must reinvent themselves, mark themselves out as different, create new brands, invent unheard-of concepts, even offer ‘unique experiences’. It has become imperative to cast aside the constraints of the traditional hotel industry, the so-called ‘international’ references, which are often too standardized. Their obvious source of inspiration is, therefore, boutique hotels. In fact, behind these small(er) establishments hide a number of nuggets of clearlydefined style. Whether completely ‘pop’ or radically monastic, ultra-coloured or in the natureWELCOME eco vein, vintage or futuristic, innovation is taken to excess, almost to the point of caricature. In their desire to be continually more surprising, some have clearly forgotten the expectations of their customers and have begun to resemble ‘pop-ups’, those temporary establishments whose attraction remains undimmed after two or three seasons. And yet the sheer spread of investments undertaken by the large groups does not make this style of sporadic occupancy feasible. So once this wave of ultra-personalization has passed, investors, proprietors, architects and interior designers will unite to find a balancing point which marries creativity, quality, comfort and, of course, success. It goes without saying that this in no way involves a return to infinitely reproducible concepts, or to the somewhat fluid standards which characterized the ‘good old days’ of the hotel industry – the intention, rather, is to refocus one’s attentions on the essentials, most notably wellbeing and service, followed by high technology and cultural heritage. For whilst all hotels used to be alike, from Shanghai to Sao Paolo, from the Cape to Amsterdam, many have since introduced a little heritage into their projects, even the most design-oriented. If a few countries, like Japan for example, have always known how to fuse traditional culture with contemporary décor, high-speed development has meant that this has by and large passed others by.
m
But with distances shortening a little with every passing day, customers should no longer be able to confuse their ports of call. The hotel in which they are staying must be just as striking and inspiring as the destination itself: the pleasure of being elsewhere, even whilst in one’s hotel bedroom. For they are no longer content with simply feeling just as good in a hotel as they are at home, they want the hotel to feel even better than home. More than ever, architects and designers have a role to play in this field, where each new project is more or less a full-scale test of their creativity. This is a kind of free routine whose sole obligatory device is maximum customer satisfaction. But although this is all incredibly exciting, much depends on the seriousness of each of the players. Thus the manager of the premises must ensure that his staff are flawless, the chef must look to the freshness of his products, and as for the interior architect, he must also play his part, making sure of the quality of his materials and equipment. Rather than simply choosing suppliers, real partnerships must be entered into with craftsmen and manufacturers capable of working with him on the project, of responding to the craziest expectations, without once skimping on true craftsmanship, the very latest technology and tailored service. So if all the players respect these rules, with no cheating, whilst giving of their best, these are the most tremendous projects which will be built on sites all over the world.
Alexandra Laugier
CHECK IN Décoration Internationale check in Your favourite hotel? The Park Hyatt Paris Vendôme. Everything there is just right: an elegant, unostentatious decorative scheme, perfect service, unparalleled sleeping arrangements, a bathroom/dressing room concept which is incredibly well thought-out, whether you are a man or a woman, an open fire in winter, a summer patio, and excellent pâtisseries throughout the year!
What would be a faux pas for a hotel? A desire to be fashionable. And theatrical décor. Many establishments rely on a beautiful façade and imagine that customers will not dwell on the little things: chipped paintwork, a door which bangs too loudly, a bobbly dressing gown, concentrated rather than pressed fruit juice, a slightly stained carpet, wobbly furniture. This is wrong: people often only see things like this.
The one you dream of visiting? The Amangiri in Utah, for clearing the mind. The hotel champions ultra-contemporary architecture and décor, whilst merging perfectly into the rocks of Canyon Point. An arresting spectacle in the middle of nowhere.
Your style in three words (the style I like and not my own style, since I am not a designer) Creativity, restraint, refinement.
The next one you plan to visit? A recently-opened hotel, anywhere in the world. Professionally, what is your dream? To never be blasé. I dream of always being fascinated by the discovery of new countries, new places, new architectural and artistic achievements. What inspires you? The inspiration of designers – this can be an object, a place, a piece of art, an attitude. But faux pas can inspire me in the same way. Bad taste, uselessness, inactivity can also be very inspiring, in terms of one’s reaction to them. What is most important to you in a hotel? Impeccable premises and faultless service. What makes an establishment successful? An intangible alchemy of good decoration, discreet, thoughtful service and a certain personality which enables us to locate ourselves in the world without resorting to faddishness. In particular it is the small details, from lobby to bathroom, which make the difference. And a restaurant? A range of good seasonal products, and a chef with a healthy dose of talent and 0% pretension. Here too, it is all a question of getting it right. In terms of décor the most important thing of all is not to be cold: too many restaurants forget that it’s not pleasant to eat one’s dinner while sitting in a fridge!
Your colour? A palette ranging from the lightest grey to the darkest blue. The historic building you always love to visit? The Grand Palais. For the architecture of its nave, obviously, which is just as beautiful from the outside as it is from the inside, for the quality of light it produces, and also for the voluptuousness of its caryatids. Here, one could never be anywhere other than in Paris. The city in which you could live? Isn’t Paris the most beautiful city in the world? I love Italy in general. My heart is pulled two ways, between a colourful lifestyle in Milan and a lazier one in Rome. The piece of design you dream of acquiring? I’m always ready to lose my head over a seat. Armchairs or chairs, they are real style exercises for designers. I am currently coveting Pierre Paulin’s Archi armchair, in blue or grey, obviously. An admired contemporary? Architects. The ability to bring a building into being is something to admire in and of itself. So when they show real innovation, when they have clearly thought outside the marketing brief and when their creations embellish the landscape, I become a real groupie, to the point where I can happily excuse the odd dash of megalomania in certain cases.
