M’Afrique Collection Birsel+Seck, 2009 Description Made entirely in Dakar, Senegal by local artisans, most of the furniture in this collection is constructed of a durable nylon cord – traditionally used to make fish nets – woven directly to the frame. Woven herringbone pattern upholstery is offered in specific color combinations. Tubular steel frame has anti-rust treatment for outdoor use, and is wrapped in same material as upholstery. Car Rapide: base is painted sheet metal with hand-carved wood backrest fitted into slot.
Moroso has created a burgeoning industry in Dakar Senegal, using local craftsman to realize the African-inspired designs of Patricia Urquiola, Philippe Bestenheider and Tord Boontje. Moroso’s project in Dakar also represents an opportunity to realize ideas close to the roots of the partners of Birsel + Seck: Ayse Birsel, from Turkey, and Bibi Seck, born in Paris of Senegalese parents. Bibi, whose family now lives in Dakar, visits l’Atelier Moroso frequently.

Gaal is a daybed inspired by the traditional Senegalese wood beds, but here made of metal circles. The form of the bed narrows towards its ends, like Senegalese fishing boats. Yellow cushion is polyurethane foam.
Car Rapide is inspired by the painted minibuses that transport people all over Dakar. The rocker base is welded sheet metal painted with traditional motifs and Ndebele, inspired by the Ndebele decorations on traditional architecture. The back is a simple, handcarved plank of wood.
