(1926 -1998)

Among the giants of Danish design, Verner Panton established a unique reputation for his exuberant originality and tireless experimentation. Panton created lamps, furniture and textiles – and was also a sought-after interior designer. Although he was at the forefront of mid-century Danish Modern, Panton’s contribution was anything but mainstream. He enthusiastically embraced new materials, he splashed with a bold colour palette, and he playfully imbued many of his sculptural creations with a strong graphical expression – without ever compromising on quality or workmanship. Panton’s iconic designs have emerged as contemporary design classics – as strikingly inventive now as they were 50 years ago. Panton’s interior installations have attained legendary status. The most famous examples are the ‘Visiona’ ship installations for the Cologne Furniture Fair (1968 and 1970), the Spiegel publishing headquarters in Hamburg (1969) and the Varna restaurant in Aarhus (1971). Verner Panton in his own words: “The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination. Most people spend their lives living in dreary, grey-beige conformity, mortally afraid of using colours. By experimenting with lighting, colours, textiles and furniture and utilizing the latest technologies, I try to show new ways, to encourage people to use their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting”.

55

Move. When designing the Move table, Panton wanted the quintessential features of a good table – a top and four legs, one in each corner – but he also needed it to be flexible. The idea for the design came in 1972, as Panton was trying to figure out how to best present his work to visitors, within the limited space of his Basel studio. He figured out that the best way to go about it was to be pragmatic. As there was no room in his office for an extra table, he decided to fit his work desk with lockable castors – this way he could move it to the center of the room and have visitors stand around it when he gave presentations. Problem solved. By fitting the table with castors, Panton added mobility and made the table flexible and ready for multi-purpose use. Move is a timeless design, and a perfect representation of Verner Panton’s incredible sense of combining simple aesthetics with great everyday functionality.

The baby alpaca fibre, used in the Polette throw, is from one of the finest parts of the fleece. It has several outstanding properties: soft, light, durable and versatile. The alpaca fleece serves like a natural thermostat, keeping you in steady temperature. It is naturally hypoallergenic (lanolin free), not itchy and does not retain water and is not flammable.

Alpacas (Lama pacos) are one of the most beautiful and gracious species on Earth. It is a South American camelid related to the llamas, guanacos and vicuĂąas. The alpacas have been the treasure of the Andes for over 6000 years, where the Peruvian region currently houses the largest alpaca population in the world.

Alpaca weaving is part of the Peruvian’s inheritance. A traditional art since pre-Inca times. The outcome is a fine, durable, comfortable, lightweight piece of textile, amazingly soft on the skin.
