His Lifes' Script On Monday November 4, 1963 at 10:00 p.m. Mae Gibson-Brown and the late John Allan Brown, Jr., were blessed with a 9lb 9.5 oz, 23-inch long boy who was a snug fit for the newborn shirts. Charles Cleveland Brown was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and was the last of six children. He was EVERYBODY’s baby. His education began at The Foote School where his love for performing was sparked! His first stage performance was at age 3. He played the “Little Brown Mouse,” in “Twas Night Before Christmas.” While in kindergarten, his teacher reported that he could not pass a piano without banging on the keys. A few years later, his parents surprised him with a piano. Chuckey, as he is affectionately known, entered the New Haven Public School System in his eighth grade year. He was an advanced student and he was paid to tutor students in math after school. Upon his arrival at James Hillhouse High School, his love for performing manifested through dance with Bowen Peters, and as the first male cheerleader in NHPS history. He also served as the drum major for the All-City (Cross, Hillhouse, and Lee) High School Band. He sang in the Hillhouse Chorus and Hillhouse Gospel Choir all four years of high school. While in high school Chuckey went to New York, with his friend Paul Hall, to try out for Alvin Ailey School of Dance. He came home and said, “Mama, there were 1200 people trying out for 15 spots for the summer.” Days later, he got one of those spots! It was then that Chuck told his mom, “I am going to Broadway when I am 25.” He got there at 26. Chuckey’s early performances at the Downtown Cabaret Theater in Bridgeport included “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Coat”, and as James Thunder Early in “Dream Girls”. He performed in “Starlight Express” in Las Vegas, which led to the role of backup singer for Barry Manilow during his Las Vegas residency. Chuck also traveled to Japan with the Afro-Caribbean Funk Rock Band “Mikita”. Upon his return state-side he auditioned for AND secured leading roles in Broadway plays such as The Professor in “RENT”, the role of John in “Miss Saigon”, and Mufasa in “The Lion King”. He would later join the traveling reprisals of “Miss Saigon” and “Rent”. If anyone knew Chuckey, or spent any time in his presence, there is one thing he expressed to everyone. You would have to hear him talk about “His Momma.” His email was even “maesbaby”. He would fly her all over the United States for two main purposes: 1.) To have her near him, and 2.) So she could cook for the crew!

His Lifes' Script With all his acting acumen and musical performances, his greatest joys were the adoption of his son William Charles Brown and spending time with his nieces and nephews. All of the nieces and nephews and their friends loved to hang with Uncle Chuckey, as he was nothing but, “Kool-Aid and recess.” When he came to town, he’d go to their school, sign them out, and take them on a day excursion!! Their bond was rock steady as they NEVER revealed these cherished acts until he passed!! He made a special Birthday song and/or name for each of them. God granted Chuck another opportunity to do what he loved by allowing him to use his gifts and talents to His glory. For the past 13 years, his joy was serving Zion Church in the music ministry. Most recently he served as the Global Vocal Director. In this role he worked closely with Josh Davies and enjoyed the creative bond they shared. Crafting the music to enhance the worship experience for Zion Church was his way of giving back to God! Zion’s place in Charles’ life was a demonstration of God’s goodness and grace towards him. The fact that he was entrusted with this level of responsibility and the accountability to his friend and pastor, Keith Battle, was valued and helped make him even more grateful to God. Charles, Chuckey, C.C. is survived by his beloved mother Mae Gibson-Brown, New Haven, CT; his son William Charles Brown, Charlotte, NC.; sisters: Janet Brown-Clayton, New Haven, CT; Alyson (Ronnie) Brown-Davis, Baltimore, MD.; and Denise (Kenneth) Gallop, Portsmouth, VA., his brother John (Loren) A. Memorials

There are not enough words to convey our love for you Uncle Chuckey. You will be sorely missed. Thank you for all memories and the time we spent together.

Oh how we will miss your BIG booming voice and laughter, our serious conversations, your thoughts on music and the latest trending topics in the news. How do I move from here, who else is going to take all my food and say it didn’t make it! I’ll miss cooking for you and sneaking off to try some new restaurant going to live recordings and concerts dissecting every moment. Thank you for loving me and my children like your own, it was more than just a niece and greats. You made Carter a nephew way before the I do. You taught Eli how to drive, and went out of your way to see that he did everything he set his mind to. Thank for allowing him to occupy your home on every school break and just plain ole weekends. Your singing soothe E’Laiyna’s cries. You have walked us to so many firsts and now we will walk with you to your final place of rest. This silence is deafening and we can’t bare it. A piece of me left with you. Until we see your smile again, we will hold you in our mind, heart. What an amazing man my greatest friend my Unlce-Father. We Love You from here to eternity.

Uncle Chuckey... I always felt I was lucky because I had a “You”. The way you made me feel special and loved was an amazing gift. From the patience displayed from watching my hour long personal dance performances with enthusiasm, to our secret Uncle Chuckey and Princess Days when you signed me out of school and spoiled me. You were always present and the loudest cheerleader at every milestone and accomplishment. I will be forever grateful for your love. As a mom, I’m even more grateful that my son, Omari, had the blessing of experiencing the blessing of Uncle Chuckey. He wants you to know that he will keep his promise and become a wise man! Love, - Princes #2 and Baby King
