Editors Notes Back to school, packing away our summer clothes, and looking forward to the holidays always is a transition that we always look forward to. The crunch of leaves underfoot as we walk bundled up in a favorite sweater with the smell of crisp fresh air makes us think of new beginnings. While it's sad to see summer go, we know that there are fun days to come. Most of all we start to think of the holidays ahead and those last days of summer splashing at the beach behind. It is a new year as the kids begin school again, the Jewish New Year comes and the change of season makes us feel fresh and new again. It is by far, our favorite time of year. The turkey on the table, going up into the attic to get our favorite decorations all make us feel like celebrating. Life is starting to come back to normal and we look forward to traveling to see friends and families (or faraway lands). We take a breath and smell the possibilities that autumn brings. We hope that this magazine inspires you to take stock, try new things and shop a little. Happy Fall.

Fall Decorating

Fall has been a traditional time of harvest celebration since the days when farming was commonplace, and this theme continues today even in urban communities. Decorating for the fall harvest means celebrating the plenty of the season and heralding the change from summer to winter. It can also be a festive time to usher in the holiday season. Here are some tips and ideas for your fall harvest decorating this year. 1. Charming Frames Chances are, you have picture frames stored away in various places in your home. They make popular gifts, and many of us end up with more than we need. If not, you can often find them for very little money at second-hand stores and even some major retailers. You can make fall harvest decorations from these ordinary frames. Lightly glue pressed leaves and/or flowers onto a blank white background, such as a piece of card stock, and insert it into the frame. If you are lucky enough to have frames with two pieces of glass, you can achieve a floating leaf look by sandwiching it between the glass. These look nice on a table, mantel, wall, or anywhere you want to bring the autumn in. Another note on frames - using a hot glue gun, you can attach acorns, seedpods, and other autumn odds and ends to the frame itself. 2. Natural Vases for Fall Bouquets You may not have considered this before, but autumn brings all sorts of interesting fruits and vegetables that you can use as vases for fall arrangements. The best sorts of vegetables and fruits for this type of decoration are those with a long shelf life, such as squashes, gourds, and apples. But you can certainly think outside the box if you're only going to have the decoration up for a few hours. In that case, you can include citrus peel cups and even hollowed-out pears. Basically, you slice the top off of the vegetable or fruit of your choice and then dig out the flesh to the depth you need. You can then fill it with water and flowers, or use floral foam. 3. More with Gourds and Pumpkins All those inexpensive little gourds and pumpkins are readily available in the fall. Gather lots of them and make a wreath using hot glue and a circular base (such as grapevine or a foam craft ring). Another idea is to arrange gourds on a cake plate or pile them in a tiered tray. You can even make a garland of small gourds, stringing them on fishing line or upholstery thread. 4. Candle Sticks Artichokes make great fall decorations with their shape and many dimensions. Cut the top straight across about 1.5 inches down. Cut a small round hole in the center of the bottom, large enough to fit a tapered candle through. Simply push the candle through the bottom hole to the top. Everything pops out easily.

If you cannot remember the date you installed your alarms, check the manufacturing date – commonly located on the back of the alarm – and add 7-10 years, depending on the model. There’s also a flashing LED status ring that allows easy identification of the current state of the alarm. There’s also a Hush button that allows you to silence an alarm for up to 10 minutes, and an Alarm Locate feature that allows you to find the initiating alarm by silencing the other alarms in the network. The Easiest Damn Turkey You'll Ever Make

Who's making the turkey this year, because last year it was like sawdust it was so dry? Sigh...we all know that Zee can't cook, which means all of the turkeys need to run and hide, because she's hosting. Of course, she asked her partner-in-crime for some help and Rach gave her a recipe that will make her guests think that she went to Le Cordon Bleu. Rach said "hey, we need to share this with our readers" and here it is! Instructions: Purchase a fresh turkey. Be sure to check both ends and take out the neck bone and the bag of giblets. You can use these to make grandma’s stuffing, she would boil it all and strain it to get fresh turkey stock. Place the turkey in your turkey pan. Pour salt in your hand and rub it all over inside the cavity. With the remaining salt on your hands, rub it all over the top of the turkey (massage that bad boy). Cut pads of butter, put on a toothpick, and stick it into the turkey. Add 2 cups of water to the bottom of the pan. Place the turkey in the oven and cook according to the size of your turkey (see below) Turkey Talk! 1.5 pounds of turkey per person 15 minutes per pound on 325 Do not place stuffing inside the turkey No need to baste The skin will get golden brown and if the legs seem like they’re getting too well, you can cover these with aluminum foil once they’re cooked.
