The new Anglia Ruskin University Alumni Facebook page, which can be found at www.facebook.com/AngliaRuskinUniversityAlumni, has recently gone live. It has been completely revamped and will be updated regularly with interesting news pieces, as well as events for all Alumni to be involved in. We hope you will find the page to be a useful tool for finding old classmates, sharing experiences and keeping up to date with the latest Anglia Ruskin news. Thank you to everyone who took part in the online survey for the 2012 MBA dinner, which is now closed. We appreciate you taking time to inform us how we can improve the event for next year. The results indicated that while many of you are happy with the arrangement of the dinners, there are always areas in which we can improve. My focus for next year will be ensuring the evening is arranged to accommodate as many of our MBA members as possible, we’re aiming for the 2013 dinner to be the most informative and enjoyable so far. We will shortly begin organising the dinner, so if you weren’t able to attend this year please try and come along in 2013 as it would be great to meet you in person. I am looking forward to meeting you all and please do keep in touch and tell us what you are doing. Best of luck for all of your current endeavours! Warm regards David Abbott Alumni Relations & Development Officer

The Storm Clouds on the Horizon With the euphoria from the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics still holding across the country one could be forgiven of thinking that we are still at the beginning of one of the biggest financial crises of all time. The Collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008 nearly brought the whole banking and financial system down. The policy response to avoid another Great Depression has been phenomenal. In The UK interest rates have been cut to 0.5% (the lowest in the history of the Bank of England, the second oldest central bank on the planet) and quantitative easing now totals £375bn (£6,148 for each person in the country). However, output in the economy still remains 4% below its pre-recession peak. The big question that policy makers across the globe face is, where will economic growth come from?

that worked as Chief European Economist for the Ford Motor Company. She was also a member of the HM Treasury’s Panel of Independent Economic Advisers (1996–97). Kate was commissioned by the Government in April 2003 to conduct an independent review of UK Housing Supply. In 2006 she conducted an independent review of Land Use Planning and was awarded a CBE in the same year for services to social housing.

Dido Harding On Monday 29 October Dido Harding will be giving a guest lecture in Chelmsford to the second year students. This will take place in MAB221 at 12noon.

A challenge for any academic working in the areas of economics and finance is to try to interpret what is going on and explain its importance to students and the wider community. After every major financial crisis in history there has been social, cultural and political change. We have not really seen any of these yet, but the warning signs are there. It is vital to have an interest and understanding of these events as they will affect us all, our children and grandchildren – it is that big. Whether you run your own business, are looking to change jobs or move up the career ladder, are saving for retirement, are retired, etc. these events will affect your future opportunities and aims.

Dido was appointed CEO of TalkTalk Group in March 2010. Prior to joining TalkTalk, Dido was Sainsbury’s convenience director. She joined Sainsbury’s from Tesco PLC where she held a variety of senior roles both in the UK and international businesses. She was appointed as a non-executive director of The British Land Company PLC in January 2010. On Wednesday 7 November Jerome Booth will give his take on recent events and the key trends with a focus on the emerging market economies. This will take place at 6:00pm in the Michael Ashcroft building lecture theatre MAB221.

In trying to assist students in gaining insights into what is going on I have always updated what I teach to reflect events. I also organise outside speakers to come into the University to provide insights from their fields of interest. In the coming semester the following people have kindly agreed to deliver sessions. MBA students and Alumni are welcome to attend and I would strongly encourage you to do so as this is an incredible line up. Very few universities can offer such events. The sessions that start at 12noon are part of a second year lecture. We realise that such a time is hard to make but would be delighted to welcome you. As part of the evening session we are having a welcome reception. If you would like to attend any session please email David Abbott so that we can plan numbers.

Jerome Booth Jerome is Head of Research for the Ashmore Group plc, a world-leading emerging markets investments company. He is a member of the Investment Committee and the ‘public face’ of the company, regularly contributing to and quoted by the world’s financial press. Stakeholder Partnership: To design a Leadership Development programme in partnership with key business stakeholders to ensure commitment towards and consistency in the delivery of the learning and development interventions throughout the branch network in the UK.

The BA (Hons) Management & Leadership degree was launched in September 2007 as a formal part of Barclays’ Retail Development Programme, a programme which specifically targets new talent to the business with the aim of the trainees achieving the position of Branch Manager or equivalent within 3 years of joining the programme.

To date, the programme has recruited 100 trainees to the programme and the second cohort of students will graduate at the Cambridge graduation ceremony on 11 October. The programme continues to grow in terms of its overall size and significance within the business and will launch its 5th consecutive programme in October with 45 new trainees enrolling onto the degree programme.

Laszlo’s truffle business will mushroom! Student scoops £15,000 first prize in Anglia Ruskin’s Big Pitch competition Laszlo Csiba is celebrating after winning £15,000 in The Big Pitch student business competition at Anglia Ruskin University. The 26-year-old from Mohacs, Hungary, has set up The Original Truffles Limited, a company supplying fresh local truffles and truffle products. Laszlo, who impressed the seven-strong panel of business experts and entrepreneurs with his presentation, said: “It is a very valuable experience and I am so glad that I could win this competition. However, it is not only about the money, but also the things we have learned and experienced.

“I will use the 15k to create a website, develop own-branded products and take the necessary steps to grow British truffles.”

Spanish student Paula Albinana secured the second prize of £10,000 for CB – a real ale designed for the female market. Eddie Shevlin from Hammer & Tongs took the third prize of £5,000 to help him grow his social enterprise which aims to provide arts resources for young offenders.

Anglia Ruskin’s Lord Ashcroft International Business School, said: “All of this year’s finalists did a fantastic job and are a real credit to Anglia Ruskin University. The whole point of the competition is to identify entrepreneurial ideas and people who have the potential and passion to succeed. “CEDAR is now looking forward to working with all of the winners over the coming year and providing professional mentoring and business advice to give each of our entrepreneurs the best possible chance of making their ventures a success.” The judging panel comprised: Walter Herriot OBE; Peter Taylor, CEO of TTP Group plc; Paddy Bishopp Co-founder of Paddy & Scott’s; Natalie Haywood, Founder and Managing Director of This is Leaf Ltd; Chris Walklett, Partner at Peters Elworthy & Moore (PEM); Laragh Jeanroy, Partner at Peters Elworthy & Moore (PEM); and Michael Loffler, Partner at Eversheds.

Over 150 people from Anglia Ruskin and the Paula Albinana local business community attended the final on the East Road campus in Cambridge. The seven finalists had all progressed past previous rounds which had seen them produce a short video pitch and submit a 2,000-word business plan.

Walter Herriot OBE said: “The Big Pitch is rapidly establishing itself both as a key date on the University calendar and also on the regional entrepreneurial scene.

The three winners of The Big Pitch, which was open to all Anglia Ruskin students, also receive 12 months free office space at the Anglia Ruskin StartupLab, mentoring from a successful entrepreneur, legal and financial planning workshops from Eversheds and Peters Elworthy & Moore (PEM), and a year’s free business banking with Barclays.

“The quality of the finalists and professionalism with which this year’s competition was organised is a real testament to Anglia Ruskin University and all of the sponsors and judges are already looking forward to next year’s event.”

Harrods sponsors a second cohort of retail departments at Harrods have been mentoring students on their specialist modules, which included Digital Sales and Marketing, Key Account Management, Enterprise in Sales and the International Customer. At an open evening for staff and managers, the students spoke passionately about the benefits they and their teams had enjoyed as a result of their intensive study and assignments. Digital Marketing course tutor, Richard Field, said, ‘Harrods Online is an international success story, and students on this module were able to use it as a real-time case study upon which to base their work. Everyone was delighted with the results, which combined both academic and up-to-the-minute digital retail sales skills.’ There were big celebrations in both Chelmsford and Knightsbridge this summer, as the first cohort of BA (Hons) Sales students from Harrods hand in their dissertations.

Last July saw the induction of a second cohort of students. Prospective Harrods staff members are required to pass psychometric tests and written and interview assessments in order to be considered for a place on the course.

Lord Ashcroft International Business School and Higher Skills @ Work have partnered with Harrods to develop this unique accelerated Sales degree. It has been designed to provide Harrods’ employees in sales roles with a practical and theoretical sales education at university level.

In October, the current cohort will graduate at a ceremony held at our Chelmsford campus. Elizabeth Priestley Marketing Co-ordinator, Learning Development Services

Anglia Ruskin investigates ‘mutual benefits’ Wayne Hemingway will be among the speakers at 3rd Sector Futures conference Leading designer Wayne Hemingway MBE will be among the speakers when Anglia Ruskin University plays host to more than 300 delegates from charities, social enterprises and the private and public sector on Wednesday, 12 September. With 2012 named the United Nations’ International Year of the Co-operative, the Business as Mutual conference taking place on Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge campus will discuss the increasing focus on co-operatives and mutuals as vehicles for delivering public services.

signed up for one of the cohorts which are delivered in Cambridge and Chelmsford, as well as by distance learning. Andy Brady, Senior Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin and Head of 3rd Sector Futures, said: “The calibre of speakers we have attracted, as well as the number of delegates due to attend, is testament to many years of patient work spent engaging with charities and social enterprises on their terms, rather than trying to apply ready-made solutions to the issues they face.

In addition to Hemingway, co-founder of the Red or Dead fashion label and now heavily involved in design for affordable and social housing, other guest speakers include: Nick Hurd MP, Minister for Civil Society, and Vivian Woodell, Chief Executive of award-winning social enterprise The Phone Co-op.

“In difficult times we are now looking to link socially responsible corporates with high impact charities and social enterprises, to help meet some of the challenges the UK faces as a society. 3rd Sector Futures has a vital role to play in ensuring Anglia Ruskin continues to lead the way in this key area for government and policy makers.”

The conference is organised by 3rd Sector Futures, based at Anglia Ruskin’s Lord Ashcroft International Business School, which works with leaders and managers of charities and social enterprises. It builds on the success of 3rd Sector Futures over the last four years, during which time Anglia Ruskin has gained a reputation as one of the leading universities in the UK for engagement with the third sector, combining innovative learning programmes with research projects and knowledge exchange.

A number of workshops will run during the conference examining a range of topics including: starting a social enterprise, mutuals and public service delivery, engaging stakeholders in fundraising, and leadership in the third sector. Attendance at the conference is free thanks to event sponsors Anglia Regional Co-operative Society and Central Essex Community Services CIC, but places are limited. To reserve a place, please visit www.businessasmutual.co.uk

Innovative teaching through CEDAR: Learning by doing If you have been following the activities of the Centre for Enterprise Development and Research (CEDAR), you might have gathered by now that we do things differently. In fact, our value statement reads: ‘At CEDAR we do things differently. We push boundaries, we take risks, we are courageous. We strive to be great at everything we do. And we do this to inspire all those engaging with CEDAR to get more out of themselves and more out of everyone around them.’ Grand words, but nowhere is this more in evidence then through the BA (Hons) Enterprise and Entrepreneurial Management undergraduate course offered through CEDAR. The key objective behind this innovative undergraduate programme is to equip graduates with Employability Skills – so called soft skills such as problem solving, risk management, teamwork, risk management, leadership and so on – that will allow them to take control of their own careers once they leave LAIBS, wherever that career might take them. An example might help here and so let’s take a look at one of the modules offered on this course, namely ‘Learning by Doing’.

organized a black tie charity auction held at the University Arms Hotel in Cambridge on behalf of Help for Heroes. The auctioneer was Jeffrey Archer, former chairman of the Conservative Party, the Master of Ceremony was Bernard Hill – Yosser Hughes from Boys from the Blackstuff if you are a codger like some within CEDAR, or The King in Lord of The Rings if you are a whippersnapper like our students – and they succeeded in raising the princely sum of £9,800. This year six students organized an event on Parkers Piece on behalf of the Rosie Maternity Ward called Rosie in the Park. A great time was had by all, over £2,000 was raised and the Addenbrookes Trust were so impressed by our students that they have suggested that we arrange for a similar event to be organized by the students following the Learning by Doing module next year.

This final year module replaces the usual dissertation undertaken by other students within LAIBS. Instead the students have three options available to them. First, the students can opt to take a business idea into the StartupLab, the university incubator space on the Cambridge Campus. Here the students will receive mentoring advice and support from CEDAR entrepreneurs to develop a business idea to the stage where once the taught programme is completed the business is ready to go.

Learning by Doing, an old fashioned notion with an innovative twist, with the core CEDAR aim of inspiring graduates of the course to get more out of themselves and more out of those around them. At CEDAR we do things differently, and we think it works.

Second, the students can undertake a consulting assignment for one of the entrepreneurial businesses involved with CEDAR. Last semester, three students were tasked with developing a market entry strategy to large scale businesses in the East of England for a young entrepreneurial training company. The prize at the conclusion of this task was an offer of full time employment with DGInternational, to work with their business development team to put their market entry plan into practice.

For more information on the BA (Hons) Enterprise and Entrepreneurial Management or on the work of CEDAR please contact Professor Lester Lloyd-Reason, Director of CEDAR at: lester.lloyd-reason@anglia.ac.uk Professor Lester Lloyd-Reason Tel Ext : 0845 196 2479 Email: lester.lloyd-reason@anglia.ac.uk

Finally, the students can elect to organise and deliver an event on behalf of a recognised charity. Last year the students

Creating Future Champions in the East Business leaders design new Anglia Ruskin course – for themselves! The business leaders highlighted three key areas they believe are vital; creating the right company culture, adopting the correct business strategy, and being able to identify and understand the ingredients necessary for growth, including access to finance and the ambition of the company’s leadership. The outcome of the roundtable was then fed back to the course developers at CEDAR, led by Roger Mumby-Croft, Professor of International Management Practice at Anglia Ruskin. Professor Mumby-Croft said: “Creating Future Champions is a pragmatic business course aimed at business owners and managers who are determined to stimulate growth in their companies, which can be either aspirational companies or large companies that need refreshing. “The course will offer the opportunity to step outside the dayto-day management of the company and gain strategic advice to take the business to the next level. Business leaders will develop an understanding and control of key business disciplines; from strategy to operations, marketing and finance.

Professor Mumby-Croft

“Creating Future Champions will help business people create a growth plan with the support of specialists who can offer insights into best practice gained from real world experience. Participants will be able to share experiences and gain ideas and feedback from peers from different market sectors facing similar issues.”

Creating Future Champions, a course designed by East of England business leaders for East of England business leaders, has been launched by Anglia Ruskin University. The CBI’s recent report “Future champions – unlocking growth in the UK’s medium-sized businesses” described the sector as treading water after becoming more risk averse.

The course, which is aimed at owners, CEOs or key senior managers, begins this September and monthly sessions will be held on Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge campus until July 2013. For more information about Creating Future Champions, please contact Professor Mumby-Croft on 07795 427982 or e-mail roger.mumby-croft@anglia.ac.uk

Anglia Ruskin’s Centre for Enterprise Development and Research (CEDAR) held a roundtable discussion with business people running companies with a turnover of £5m or greater, including: Mark Hammond (CEO of Melbourn Scientific), Alan Ball (CEO UK and Ireland of Spicers Ltd) and Angela Rushforth (Managing Director of Ridgeons Group) to discuss the issues facing their businesses and examine the problems identified by the CBI report.

New Visiting Professor John Willan BMus ARAM FRSA FCA We are delighted to announce that John Willan has been appointed a Visiting Professor for an initial period of 3 years. John qualified as a chartered accountant but, following a music degree from Edinburgh University and post graduate study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he joined EMI as a classical record producer working with most of the top names in the world. This led to his becoming the fourth managing director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and, during his tenure, the orchestra was appointed the first sole resident of the Royal Festival Hall in London. There followed the best line up of conductors and soloists that any London orchestra had seen since the War, sold out houses and record sponsorship. He then moved to the BBC to build a music business for its commercial arm, BBC Worldwide. After 4 years it encompassed CD and DVD distribution, radio and TV Arts sales and music publishing. Turnover went from nothing to £7.5M over this time. In 2000 he became Chairman of the Cambridge based management agency Hazard Chase, and within a few years, combined this role with that of finance director. He left the company, after 11 years, in August last year. For the past seven years he has been Chairman of the International Artist Managers’ Association, the only worldwide association of classical music managements, representing the members both here and abroad, officiating at IAMA events and dealing with government over issues affecting the sector.

Seven years ago, John traded London for Cambridge and moved his sailing boat from Suffolk to Holland, trading Ipswich for Amsterdam, Adnams for Jonge Genever!

Dr Rob Willis, Director of Research at LAIBS, said, “It is envisaged that John will play an important role in helping LAIBS focus it's scholarship and research agenda. John's knowledge and experience will be invaluable to us and we are very excited at prospect of working with him.”

“It is absolutely the right moment for me to share the experience, contacts and knowledge I have been lucky enough to amass so far, with those who aspire to excellence in their forthcoming careers and I am excited at the prospect of being able to do so as part of the developing team at the Lord Ashcroft International Business School.”

John is a governor of the Royal Academy of Music in London and chair of its audit committee. He chairs the Two Moors Festival and is a tutor for BPP, the UK’s leading provider of professional qualifications and development.
