DESIGN STATEMENT Ophelia is a well-known as a Shakespearian literary figure who drowned herself in a river in Denmark. There have been many interpretations of Ophelia; most imposed upon her by others. In this instance the tragic figure of Ophelia is used as a metaphor for self-determination as Port Augusta breaks with tradition and searches for a new identity. In the project, ‘Ophelia’ represents the revival of Port Augusta’s ecology and economics upon the ruins of the fossil fuel industry. Just as beautiful flowers and symbols of life surround the drowning Ophelia, Port Augusta’s ecology and solar farms present a new identity and urban rebirth. The Ophelia Edible Park project is located on the coastal areas of Port Augusta City and Port Augusta West to develop a botanical and agricultural attraction. The initiative involves developing linkages with peri-urban energy parks and the utilisations of vacant lands inside and on the fringes of the urban landscapes. It aims to form a sustainable and accessible food-producing landscape. It adopts a hybrid, multi-functional approach with the park both a recreational and productive economic landscape. Ecological habitat, community food production, urban-suburban energy production, and community sociability are the four landscape programs that are developed and interwoven within the park. However, the principal program that defines the park is urban agriculture.

OPHELIA EDIBLE PARK

Urban agriculture is an essential part of the urban context as it plays an important role in enhancing sustainable transitions, urban resilience, and human-nature connectivity. The project OEP takes urban agriculture as a theoretical basis to develop a community-friendly, food self-producing, and eco-friendly urban scheme, to address a range of problems in Port Augusta, such as vacant land, sparse vegetation coverage, isolated energy stations, and poverty. A series of elements are embedded in the park, including two photovoltaic devices, three wind turbines (rotor dia.70m), the sienna pavilions, the agricultural museum, and the hydroponic systems, are providing Port Augusta with a new recreational space, job opportunities, tourism values and community interactions, which are stressed in Port Augusta’s Development Plan.

LAND OF THE NOSTALGISTS

As an extended scheme under the inspirations by TCL's masterplan for Victoria Square, Tarndanyangga, the southern part of the square is aimed to demonstrate an imitation of natural habitats for native wildlife. The methodology is to introduce plant species and planting arrangements that could either be accommodations or food sources for native birds, insects and other wildlife that are expected to return to the site. As a result, the Land of Nostalgist is designed with a dense planting mass to reach the goal of creating a relatively isolated space for wildlife habitats within the urban contexts.

PLANT ABSTRACTIONS:

The form of the concrete structures is inspired by the foliage of Eucalyptus macrocarpa, which could be observed to have a symmetrical form. The general patterns of the overall structure are designed to be square and rectangular, in order to reflect and celebrate the nostalgic way of Adelaide urban planning by Colonel Light. The sizes of concrete blocks vary from 3*3mm to 5*5mm.

The colour scheme of the plant selection is abstracted by picking the main colours of Eucalyptus macrocarpa. The cool-tone hue is applied to the whole site to provide the sense of calming with the cooperation of pinkish red for highlighting the joints of pathways. The star shape abstracted from the fruit of Eucalyptus macrocarpa is broken down and applied to the path formation on the site. It could help achieve the high accessibility from multiple directions as one of the design principles.

The pointed dome shape of the fruit of Eucalyptus macrocarpa inspired the form of the green infrastructure.

As a region sitting right next to the sea, the rainfall amounts in Onkapanriga was at the average level in 2012 and 2013. However, a decreasing tendency of rainfall was witnessed in 2014, which might be a cause to the drought situation and 20 limited natural irrigation for the vagetation and agriculture. FLOODING INTERVENE WITH SECONDARY ROAD

FLOODING INTERVENE WITH INLAND RESIDENTIAL AREA

The railway route is ideally extended to the norther n of target region to cooperate with the exsiting secondary road on the site. By this strategy a more comprehensive transport system and higher accessibility to the site could be achieved to attract more visiting flow from the Adelaide central area that is holding higher residential density.

The areas with soil that has higher water capacity could be tested and applied to the coastal line of the target region to create a spongey soil strip. It is expected to absorb the extreme intertidal and reserve underground water to maintain the vegetations in the planned wetland park.

An additional water storage tank is placed on the main joint/catchment of the inland creeks. The added facility is used for collecting extra creek water to avoid overflowing, and acting as an irrigation centre for the surrounding orchards, cropping areas, and the planned wetland park.

The surrounding residential areas guarantee the local visiting flow to the wetland park as is proposed.

The two tributaries of inland creek are ideally intericted before they intervening the residential areas. Suggested methodologies: Smallscale dam construction, drainage and plants strip.

The intertidal interaction with the water reservoir increases the hazard level of overflowing situation, but also has potential for gathering large amount of water resource that could be used after desalinating process.

FLOODING INTERVENE WITH FLOODING INTERVENE WITH URBAN LANDSCAPE COASTAL RESIDENTIAL AREA

The tributary on the south of the target site contributes with an ideal formation of a wetland reserve with its vegetation strip and water collecting potential. It hopefully could cooperate with the planned parkland as a guide, and also as a connection between the park and hill areas to create a more complete local park scheme.

STRATEGIC BRIEF -- 3 PLUSES AND 2 DIRECTIONS

PLUS 1: Increase the amount of watercourse vegetations along and within the washpool. Enhance the greenery coverage to stablize soil and achieve the wetland park scheme. PLUS 2: Add waterstorage and desalinating facilities on respectively the north and west realms of the prototype to achieve water collecting and introducing. PLUS 3: Establish a water desalination station in the area along the coastal line to transform the sea water into usable irrigation resourse and daily life water supply.

P E R P E N D I C U L A R A P P R O A C H The perpendicular approaches are aiming to establish obstructions , drainages and collecting facilities against the general flowing direction of creek triologies as the necessary movements to prevent flooding damages.

C O M P L I A N T A P P R O A C H Letting the intertidal spread into the prototype area and making uses of it to improve the greenery by providing irrigation is the main reflection of the preliminary design target, which is explained as the compliant approach. The approach is meaningful to enhance the ecological system in the area with minimum industrial intervention.

04. DOMINO GALLERY -- CONSTRUCTION SET 27

28

DESIGN BRIEF -- HERE WE INTRODUCE THE DOMINO GALLERY... As the design proposal for the next stage, the Elder Park is to be re-designed as a public rest area infused with both natural and manmade elements, especially for people working around the CBD to enjoy their lunch break. To provide the Elder Park with weather proofing benefits and supporting the proposal of futher developments, a set of 'dominos' is introduced to the site as windbreak and shading devices. The main aim of the 'domino' is to deal with the extreme sunlights, rain and wind situation since the Elder Park is currently an open space. It can also be used for art exhibiting and advertising by hanging banners. Each domino is replicated in similar forms with alternative dimensions. It is made of 3 main parts with various materialities: The base component of each 'domino' is two concrete columns with 4-metre spacing. The overhangs of columns vary from 1-2.5 metres, in order to create the sense of heaviness and weatherproofing functions. The overhanging parts give the whole form an arch-like structure. The dominos are placed linearly on the site to form directivity and pathways for people to walk through.

The red ceder round posts provide lightness to the whole structure. Their are fixed in-between the overhanging parts of the columns with various inclining degrees as a nesting structure. It could also cooperate with native creepers specimens to provide extra shading and cooling effects in summer time. The gallery function is achieved by the steel wire ropes. Banners are expected to fix to the wires to displaying art pieces and also partially block sights like a curtain, to create hierachies of views.
