Lakeside PROJECT TYPE: Exhibition hall INSTRUCTOR: Professor Zheng Dongjun DATE: March 2013 (junior year) LOCATION: Henan, China CATEGORY: Group work (academic) MY RESPONSIBILITY: concept design, diagrams, renderings, physical model, construction of nodes
Based on our cognition of the tectonics, we hope this exhibition building, which was located beside the lake with woods, can be designed with both firm structure and a combination of natural light and surrounding environment, and at the same time we also want to keep the objective features of material. We tried to put our design conception into visualized space, material, structure and other details. Space intention: we hope this building can be a new part of the nature. The continuous curves can be regarded as mountain range, changing clouds, and wiggling trees in the wind. Furthermore, some height differences and arches also create abundant changes of the interior space. Material: compared with bamboo, steel and other materials from force condition to durability and cost, at last we chose wood as the main material which is a kind of more natural material with temperature. And the adoption of wood enable the building to create people a warm, natural and appealing environment. Structure: we use the traditional arch as main structure and some tenon-and-mortise work as joints.

SURFACE canework decorative board A kind of traditional handicraft art. The raw material is the epidermis and core of stem of rattan plant.
SECONDARY SKELETON wooden purline We adopted the thin and long batten, which is light in weight and easy machining, as the purline.
MAIN SKELETON wooden arch structure We adopted wood as the main structure because of its naturality, ornamentality and practicability.
RAMP WAY & SECOND FLOOR leisure & greenhouse We chose the timber floor with beautiful texture and breathability.
PARTIAL SUBSIDENCE & FIRST FLOOR exhibition, tea, lecture & service We chose the stone as the floor of outside part because stone can protect against the tide.

As for the connection of skeletons, we tried to use the tenon-and-mortise work which is always used in traditional Chinese buildings. First of all, the material (wood) we chose is perfect for the tenon-and-mortise work. This traditional technique can help us connect the joints without any other assistant components. What’s more, the tenon-and-mortise work is really easy to assembly.

Re Home PROJECT TYPE: Mixed-use building (design for refugees) INSTRUCTOR: Professor Houayek, Henrique/ Rocco, Luca DATE: August 2017 (second year of graduate program) LOCATION: Genoa, Italy CATEGORY: Individual work (academic)
This project is an answer to the local immigration problems and located near the harbor in Genoa, Italy. There are 100,000 immigrants come to Italy every year, but only 58.5% of them can be accepted by the government. The main concept to solve this situation is to open arms to immigrants instead of just closing eyes or isolating them. In this building, it provided lots of spaces to help immigrants deal with the work, study and living problems with the market, education center, and apartments programs. At the same time, the project also wants to integrate the life of local people, immigration and even tourists together to activate the site and help immigrations to get used to the local life easier and really re-home in Genoa. Mainly, there are three programs of this project. From the bottom to the top there is the market, the education center, and the apartment, which from the public to private.
09
10
PROGRAMS: The market is the integration place for immigrants, local people, and tourists. People can learn working skills, language, cooking, and also spread their culture in the education center. The apartment is the most private part for immigrants.
CIRCULATION: The site is long and narrow with topo changes. On the lower street level, there are 2.2 meters height difference from west to east, and 10 meters difference to the upper street level. The market is designed to be a continue ramp go up to connect two street levels. So, peopel can enter from either way.
EDUCATION WORKING SKILLS LANGUAGE This education center is also designed could be used as temporary shelter when there is some emergencies happen or the sudden influx of immigrations.

The ramp starts from the west side of the site and ended with another entrance at the east side. And there are also other two entrances on the upper street level to enter the market part. In the market, some stairs connect the ramps on different floors to make it more convenient for people inside. For the space under the ramp on the ground floor, it is used as the storage, loading space for the market, and connect with the upper floor by the freight elevator.

“Massive migration is by no means a novel phenomenon; it accompanied the modern era from its very beginning (though time and again modifying, and occasionally reversing, its direction) – as our ‘modern way of life’ includes the production of ‘redundant people’ (locally ‘inutile’ – excessive and unemployable – due to economic progress, or locally intolerable – rejected as a result of unrest, conflicts and strife caused by social/political transformations and subsequent power struggles).” Excerpt From: Zygmunt Bauman. “Strangers at Our Door.”

SEVENTH FLOOR PLAN APARTMENT SHARING KITCHEN UNITS The apartment is from the fourth floor to the seventh floor. This is the most private part and would only be used by the immigrants. On each floor, there are ten units with separate bathrooms and one sharing kitchen next to the vertical circulation. There are family rooms and single rooms on each floor. The sharing kitchen on each floor aimed at providing them a place not only for cooking but also for gathering. So they can know more about their neighbors, meet new friends, help each other, and cheer each other, which is helpful for them to go through the plight.

PROJECT TYPE: Mixed-use building INSTRUCTOR: Professor Heine, Ulrike/ Houayek, Henrique/ Ersoy, Ufuk/ Franco Santa Cruz, David DATE: August 2016 (first year of graduate program) LOCATION: Greenville, SC, U.S.A. CATEGORY: Group work with Chen Liang (academic + competition) MY RESPONSIBILITY: concept design, physical models, drawings, diagrams
This site is between the downtown and the Fallls Park in Greenville, South Carolina. The central concept of our project is an answer to local ecology by integrating buildings and community activities with topography and landscape to create some different weaving layers combined with abundant public space. The project extends and connects the green of the river and commerce of downtown into the site. The connection creates on-site ecosystems that surround and interact with the buildings. How to design an accessible site and some public spaces to attract more citizens and populations to the site and active the whole community? This project complex has commercial buildings beside the Main Street, sports center and mediatheque for the entire community. As for the outdoor open space, there will be a weekend market, outdoor sports area, playground, and some plazas.

LIGHT & AIR We did more translucent insulation and curtains on both the east and west elevations to help block out direct sunlight from hitting the building and stop direct heat gain from infiltrating the envelope. By puncturing the building roof, the design allows natural indirect sunlight and air to penetrate the building. This method reduces energy consumption and carbon footprint. MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION We reused some marble material of the existing building to keep the feeling of the site. As for the sports center, we adopt the U-glass and curtain wall to make it more transparent and provide the better view for people in the building.

A Living Ancient Town PROJECT TYPE: Urban design TUTOR: Professor Liu Chenyu DATE: September 2014 (senior year) LOCATION: Shenhou, China CATEGORY: Group work (academic) MY RESPONSIBILITY: concept design, digital and hand-made model, diagrams, renderings
This project is conducted in a town with long traditional history and culture: Shenhou, which is also famous for the Jun porcelain. Our site was in the central area of Shenhou, close to the north side of the “Old Street”. In 2013, a large number of ancient kilns and porcelains with various different shapes were found here. Therefore, during the design of the new cultural and commercial street, we had to consider more about the protection of the cultural relics and tried to balance the display of ancient sites and the development of the new street. This design aims at exploring and thinking out a way to achieve the sustainable development of the historical area with cultural relics, how to treat the old and new contradictions dialectically, and how to realize the protection of historical sites and maintain the integrity and continuity of the regional context. Based on the analysis of ancient town culture, we decided to combine the firing process of Jun porcelain with the design of the new street. We hope the process can be the mainline of the new street and this concept can also affect the whole atmosphere of the street. About the forming of new courtyard, we extracted the texture of the traditional town, and integrated the old courtyards into “Squared Figure”. By this way, we can explore the possibility of the growth and combination of the courtyard better. About architectures, we adopted the pitched roof of the traditional residence, which was another kind of echoing of the mountain culture of Shenhou. Materials were extracted from the traditional street and was applied in the facade of the commercial street following our mainline.
23
24
Shenhou is a traditional town with long history. There are more than forty cultural relics, including ruins of Jun porcelain, Zushi temple, and an old maidenhair tree in Lingquan temple. Most of these relics are near to the “Old Street. The Old Street is a traditional residential street. On both sides of the street there are many traditional architectures of Ming and Qing Dynasties including religious architectures, public buildings and traditional courtyards in which are shop front and residence behind. Shenhou is famous for Jun porcelain, the first of China’s top five famous porcelain. In Tang Dynasty, Shenhou had produced faience and Jun porcelain. In the Earlier Song Dynasty, the production of Jun porcelain in Shenhou reached its peak, becoming a palace treasure. And now, Jun porcelain is still the cultural characteristics and main industry of Shenhou.

City Plaza PROJECT TYPE: Commercial building INSTRUCTOR: Professor Chen Fenxia DATE: May 2015 (senior year) LOCATION: Zhengzhou, China CATEGORY: Individual work (academic)
This site is in the center of the old town of Zhengzhou opposite a bus station, and there are also many wholesale markets, residential buildings and some factories far away. So the existing site condition was very complex. What’s more, this site is an important transport hub, next to three city main roads (Qinling Road., Jianshe Road. & Huashan Road.) and one subway station with large traffic volume. Therefore, the transportation here is convenient for people. This building is a commercial complex integrating hotel, office, cinema, and shopping mall. The podium looks like terraced field, directing the crowds to the plaza, a kind of “multiple ground floors”. And by this way, we can get three permits: the safety of dispersion of the cinema(on the ground floor), maximum value of commerce, and achieving the goal of returning the field to city. “Plaza of the city”: the platform is raised because of the problems of the surrounding, such as too many people, and complex environment. So I want to create a place that can appeal people to take a break in the busy city, and at the same time, I hope this site can also provide some green fields and public places for surrounding residents not only commerce and noisy.

10:00 AM The conflict is formed between streams of people in the bus station and the old and kids who go out to enjoy the sunshine. The complexity of large number of people go against the safety and health of the old and kids.
→Rest field such as benches are needed for tired people. 11:00 AM →A shelter is needed to protect reading old men, communicating guys, and tired pedestrians from wind and sunshine.

Because the location of the site is in the center of the old town of Zhengzhou, I hope the new building will not destroy the old street facade, and can be a “background-building rather than a strange and monstrous one. At the same time, I hope the building can become another new center of the old city in virtue of its considerate design.

In-Between PROJECT TYPE: Competition design (bridge building) INSTRUCTOR: Cui Baihe DATE: December 2015 (the last year of Bachelor) LOCATION: Chongqing, China CATEGORY: Individual work (personal)
“In-between” could be interpreted in multiple ways. It could be understood as a site position, a mixture of program or as a testament of architectural aspiration. In my design, “In-between” means the connection of land and water, the change of interior and exterior, the development of new and old, the differences of over-developed and the un-touched, and the relationship of human society and nature. The main concept of the design is the activity of riding. I think this is not a place to rent bicycles but a way to extend people’s range of activity and connect the two sides of the Jialing River. Based on the research, I found that there are always too much visitors in the south bank because of the heritage village “Ciqikou”. I hope instead of staying in this small village, even though there are many traditional buildings and old lanes, they can go further to view the Jialing River and experience the local life of Chongqing. This design will benefit the local economy as well. Therefore, I think the riding may be a good way. The main program of the “bridge” is a museum of traditional and new culture in Chongqing, accompanied with some cafe, book store, and projection room. The south side of the river is a heritage village named “Ciqikou” where is full of traditional buildings and old lanes. More than 7,000,000 visitors came here every year, which lead to many problems of this tourist attraction. On the contrary, the north bank of the river is some uncultivated land, farmland and some new dwellings with green scene and less people resulting a negative impression. I think based on this new stimulation, the uncultivated land may become some creative arts district, developing and showing the Bashu Culture of Chongqing or some experience-based organic farm combined with the existing farmland which can also be convenient for the local people’s life. I strongly believe that the new building over the Jialing River will not only increase connection of the two sides but also benefit the local area.
41
42
Is it possible to enhance the value of the north bank of the river, and release the pressure of the south bank of the river?
SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT AROUND TEH JIALING RIVER
The environment around two sides of the Jialing River is different. The south bank of the river is a heritage village named “Ciqikou where is full of traditional buildings and old lanes. More than 7,000,000 visitors came here every year which lead to the heavy load. O n t h e o p p o s i te , t h e north bank of the river is some uncultivated land, farmland and some new dwellings with green scene and less people.

People can get the main entrance of Ciqikou by bicycle which can not only save more time, but also provide them opportunity to see the outside of the village.
The enlarged transportation space is similar to a courtyard, which is also the beginning of the ramp way for people to ride the bicycle to roof with better view .
The main concept is crossing the architecture over the river by riding bicycle. There are some different spaces along the way, such as the museum of traditional and new culture, the courtyard, the ramp way and the place for overlooking the river.
