Professional Work: Competition Subject: Evanston Tower for the Housing Authority of Cook County Location: Chicago IL, 1900 Sherman Ave

Senior Housing: The building design is thoughtful and progressive with setbacks that visually reduce the tallness of the tower. A planned semi-public landscaped park at the front of the site that the entire community can take advantage of, and a use of materials that relate with other structures in the area. 120 Units: 36 at market rate with monthly rents estimated to average $2,000 for a 1-bedroom unit. 60 "Missing middle" units for persons earning 80%-120% of a median income, with 1-bedroom rents estimated to average $1,666. 24 low to moderate income units for persons earning 80% or less of a median income, with 1 bedroom rents averaging $1,450. Designed for residents age 55 and over in mind.

AMENITY

The setback along Emerson will permit a semi-public landscaped corner for the project, intended to provide for a positive pedestrian experience. Additionally, the lowest levels of the project are clad in masonry to provide a pedestrian scale and a warm, tactile material. The taller portions of the tower are clad in glass, making the building transparent and reflective. In addition, parking (37 spaces) is located below grade providing active uses for the lower floors of the building. There will be no new curb cuts along either street, so there will be no increased overlap of pedestrians and cyclists with motor vehicles.

Professional Work: Data Center Subject: Raging Wire Data Center Location: Itasca IL, 255 Pierce Road

Construction Documents/ Construction Admin: RagingWire Data Centers building’s contextual architecture uses materials and colors similar to those found within the corporate office park while still expressing its high-tech typology through extensive glazing and composition. The site has two 36MW prototype buildings for a total campus IT capacity of 72 MW of IT power divided into twelve 6MW Vaults. The building is designed for 50-years and will be capable to operating as a standalone data center, separate from other Owner data center sites.

This project will provide 1,500 additional student beds to improve student engagement. Student Housing East (SHE) is conceived as a village focused around indoor and outdoor community spaces, including dining, wellness, meeting and classroom spaces. SHE features double and triple bedrooms in small communities with gender -neutral bathrooms. The 8-story building wraps around a park, each of the three segments has a separate identity with long-range views regional mountains and hills. The design-build project meet CSLA’s needs for their specific functions, staying within the project budget, and meeting time constraints.





COMMUNITY HOUSING

Professional Work: Senior/Affordable Housing Subject: Covenant Residences at Immanuel Location: Chicago IL, 5210 N. Washtenaw Ave.

Senior Housing: The Immanuel Residences is a new construction; built of structural precast. The affordable housing development is wrapped in a brick veneer with purple iron spot brick accents along the street elevations. The with Romeo and Juliet balconies add to further the feeling of community engagement and openness between the community and the existing neighborhoods. The 80,000 sqft project is six-stories which includes 65 one-bedroom senior housing rental units, and a small series of 2 and 3 bedroom family town homes on the adjacent lot.

Urban Density: Designed to create a vibrant development for lowto moderate-income residents and for every stage of life the Immanuel Residences features a sustainable, community-based design while bringing accessible affordability to the neighborhood. The transit-oriented development will provide amenities like a community room and bike storage area plus 29 parking spaces available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis.

NORTHERN TRU ST

Professional Work: Corporate Commercial Subject: Northern Trust New Office Re-Location Location: Chicago IL, 333 North Wabash

Location: Northern Trust Corp. leased 462,000 sqft. in a 45-story building at 333 S. Wabash Ave, they plan to move 2,500 to 3,000 employees to the new location in 2020 from multiple Chicago locations. The high ceilings, natural light and the renovations to the building is part of the company’s ongoing focus to drive efficiency and growth. This move provided greater opportunities for employees to collaborate and develop creative solutions in a state-of-the-art environment.

Professional Work: Patient Courtyards Subject: ICU Patient Wellness Program Location: 22250 Providence Dr, Southfield, MI

Renderings/BIM Coordinations and Design: During treatment, what are you looking at? These courtyard designs are one of the biggest proponents of wellness. Patient rooms face these interior courtyards and gardens with a newly renovated waiting room as a threshold for entering and exiting the courtyards sundecks and gardens. Hallways are wide enough to accommodate a doctor and their residents. Daylight is encircling the existing patient rooms, planting areas via a green roof tray system, wood decking, roof pavers, trellis for vines with decorative fins, green wall, lounge seating and CafĂŠ style seating for the patients to sit with visiting friends and family members all of these details reduce stress. For caregivers, lives are enhanced. For patients, recovery is faster.

Professional Work: Affordable Houseing Subject: Interfaith Housing Development Corp. Location: Maywood IL, 800 Fifth Ave.

Affordable Housing: The five-story, mixed-use project will offer 72 units. The building, located on a 33,000 sqft. lot The porject will have studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units on the top four floors and nearly 5,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. The community will serve low-income families and individuals with incomes under 60 percent of Area Median Income. The ground floor will also have a community room for meetings and parties, laundry room, storage, property management office and social services space. IHDC is seeking a grocery store to lease the retail space as required under the zoning, he said. The development will also have a landscaped backyard and 32 parking spaces.

Sustainablity Efforts: In 2018, Fifth Avenue Apartments was one of only a dozen projects nationwide, and the only project in Illinois, selected to participate in the International Living Future Institute's (ILFI) third round of the Living Building Challenge Affordable Housing Pilot Project program. As a project selected for the Living Building Challenge's affordable housing pilot program the development of this design alongside a sustainability advocacy platform led to identifying the current challenges of pursuing an extreme green approach to design in Illinois. Professional Work: Higher Education Subject: MTU H-STEM Lab Building Location: Houghton, MI, 600 E Lakeshore Dr.

Higher Education: The Engineering & Health Technologies Complex, will house MTU’s integrated educational programs that apply engineering and science to issues related to human health. The complex will co-locate multiple departments including Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering & Kinesiology/Integrated Physiology to work together in shared collaborative space to advance learning, develop new technologies. One of the leading STEM Universities in the Midwest, the new H-STEM Complex will allow MTU’s scientists and engineers to make new discoveries through research.

RESTORATION

Post Graduate Work: Historic Preservation Firm: Carmina • Wood • Morris DPC Subject: Pierce Arrow “Building D” (Daylighting Factory) Location: Buffalo NY, Great Arrow Ave.

Historic Signifiance: The Pierce Arrow complex along Great Arrow Avenue is currently undergoing renovations and conversion into 72 market-rate apartments. The $13 million project conversion of The Pierce Arrow Factory aims to restore one of the first developed daylighting factory typologies in country. The Pierce Arrow Daylighting Factory was once a thriving automobile manufacturing complex that was constructed on the northwest quadrant of the Pan American Exposition site. Building “D” was one of the last buildings to be erected as the factory complex grew eastward from Elmwood Avenue.

The Restoration: When Pierce Arrow went out of business and the factory closed, the complex was divided up and sold. All work is being designed in compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, focusing on restoration of the building’s concrete frame and expansive window openings replaced with newly thermal efficient windows closely resembling the historic industrial steel sash installed to light the new apartments. Sitework will include improvements to the vehicular driveway, which will be reconstructed to provide 120 resident parking spaces. On the south of the building, an asphalt-paved parking area will lead into a landscaped yard area for tenant use.

Post Graduate Work: Historic Preservation Subject: The John Labatt Brew House & PSE office headquarters 2017-2018 Location: Buffalo NY, 79 Perry Street

Mixed Use Development: Pegula Sports and Entertainment purchased 79 Perry Street and an adjacent parking lot. The five-story c. 1919, 79,030 sq.ft. Building in the heart of Buffalo New York’s Cobblestone District and sits directly adjacent to First Niagara Center. Labatt USA will be the anchor tenant, calling the destination “The John Labatt Project” which will house the corporate headquarters of NAB (North American Breweries) & Pegula Sports Entertainment. The building will also include a Labatt-themed Brew House, Draft Room Restaurant, and 5 residential apartments.

Beer Revisited: Labatt USA will operate the Labatt Brew House on the building’s ground floor. The space includes a 3,000 square-foot innovation brewery with a 400 square-foot tasting room. The innovation brewery will consist of a 10-barrel, four-vessel brew house where the Labatt Brewmaster will experiment with brewing a variety of new and emerging beer styles for Labatt fans. The tasting room will provide a front-row view to the entire brewing process, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the innovation brewery. Beer drinkers will have the opportunity to taste and share feedback on fresh, high quality beers, served straight from eight brite tanks.

Post Graduate Work: Competition Subject: Buffalo Public School District Board of Education (School of Hospitality) 2016-2017 Location: Buffalo NY, Ellicott Street

Mixed Use Development: Proposals for a second Emerson School of Hospitality include a new culinary institute as the anchor of a $70 million mixed-use project that would be built on Ellicott Street south of E. Tupper Street in Buffalo NY. The state-of-the-art culinary and hospitality school would include a test kitchen and accompanying restaurant that would occupy a site at 505 Ellicott Street where an office building has been planned. The proposed school would include classrooms, kitchens, a bakery, offices, a banquet facility and a public restaurant located on the Ellicott Street face of the building.

Urban Density: The Urban density and design refers to the number of people inhabiting the under utilized buffalo area. The Urban density is considered an important factor in understanding how cities function. The school-restaurant would add dining and event amenities increasing the cities walkablity to the pedestrian-friendly and restaurant-infused street for the benefit of the area’s many businesses and visitors. The site’s development would offer ramp parking along Oak Street, and additionally aid in the creation of a micro-unit apartment complex, and a new office building at the corner of Ellicott and E. Tupper streets to increase the locations urban density.

BEARING (noun) - a person's way of standing or moving.

AUGMENT

An exploration of the dependence of architecture in context, Bearing derives expression from its site, (Letchworth State Park in Western New York). Letchworth’s defining gorge, was prehistorically carved into the earth by glaciers, and the Genesse River. The natural striations in the gorge are horizontal bands of shale, limestone, and sandstone, which are interrupted by cascading waterfalls and a soaring trestle train bridge. Lined with dense forests, the gorge’s expression of natural evolution creates a stimulating yet humbling atmosphere that inspires creativity. Based on a live/work artist program, each program occupies its own form and is assigned an associated view that aims to inspire, relax, and/or seclude its residents. ORIENT

CONTEXT:

Skrim

Balanced on a steep forested hill overlooking the gorge and central waterfall, Bearing’s preliminary rectilinear form is elevated off the ground on a series of Miesian piloti’s and is subsequently offset, augmented, and reoriented based on the topography and views of the landscape. The building purposefully merges exterior and interior spaces in order to continually immerse its residents with the landscape through the use of glass and panoramic platforms that surround the three programmatic spaces. The workspace opens itself to the waterfall, while the living space extends towards the gorge, while the private space reaches towards the river. A protective skrim, like the forest, shelters the collection of forms and their platform, concealing them from view and protecting them from the elements. Interior and exterior spaces dissolve into Letchworth’s landscapes, igniting the creative process, inspiring its residents. Structure
