A city is a living organism, with a symbiotic relationship enacted between the city and its occupants. The relationship between city and occupant changes between scales, from room to dwelling, building to neighborhood, and city to nature. Cities have a long history in the human culture, formed as central places of trade; a city has many benefits to offer its inhabitants. Living close in proximity to others facilitates interaction of all kinds. Cities have a collective character that challenges the balance between the public and private realms. Throughout the evolution of a city, its role has shifted, towards a driving force of chance encounters. The collective energy brings diverse groups of people together to develop the mix of programs.

CENTRAL FORCED SYSTEM The concept ofAIR form centers around the revolution of AIR SUPPLY bars that emphasize the overlapping spaces of different AIR RETURN DUCTSis derived from the rotation of the entities. The form bars AIR in CHASE relation to the site and its’ urban context. ELEVATORS Analyzing the site and context, the gymnasium was AIR INTAKE VENTS implemented as the public program. The action of EXHAUST lines VENTS creates a hinge that intersects, transverse generating a series of transitional spaces. Thresholds formed within these spaces increase chance encounters among the occupants and the city; challenging the balance between private and public realms.

PROJECT STATEMENT: The prison is a building typology and program type that exists as a significant part of our social, economic, and ecological landscape. However, the prison is commonly considered by many in our discipline and field as an “undesirable�- and even unwanted project commission. The prison as a spatial and social construct has fascinated and inspired architects for centuries. Extreme overcrowding, lack of suitable health care, and in-prison violence are only a few of the difficult problems our prisons and prison systems face. The mission of the Federal Prison is to protect our society by confining its offenders within a regulated environment. The facility consents to full accountability for the well-fair of its offenders, and our society, in a humane and secure facility. The goal of the prison is to rehabilitate its inmates in preparation for re-entry into society.

CONSTRAINTS Operations are limited to a maximum of 1 move. A cut and a shift (or rotation), constitutes a single move. The original volume of the cube is registered, and visible in the final outcome of the shift. The transformation is visually understood, as to how the original transformed object moves back into its original form of the cube without verbal explanation. The shift does not project past the 8 foot face of the volume; however the shift can project up, or out along the 6 foot face. The cut and shift thus results in the form of an isosceles triangle with a total elevation of 12 feet from base to point.

STUDY ABROAD IRELAND Time is defined as a non-spatial continuum measured in terms of events which succeed one another from past through present to then future. The fundamental entity of the observed physical reality is represented by a point designated by time. In order to move forward and proceed to develop a higher, better or more advanced future these events of progress must take place. The wave of the future represents forces that will inevitably prevail. The expectation of the naturally progressive development of time is dependent upon a principal of a greater occurrence taking place. The break in uniformity is incapable of being avoided, some will be unable to cope with the rapidity of social and technological changes, but this period of time is critical to the progression of a nation.

CROFFEAD HOUSE: Clark and Menefee A brick masonry house where the aggregation of brick units and different bond types were studied. PROGRAM: PUBLIC SPACE The relationship between the camera lens and human body is a two-dimensional relationship. The light from the lens is reflected and refracted through the glass projecting shadows and silhouettes. The relationship of part to whole is shown through the scale of photos, ranging in size from the whole body to the parts such as eyes, hands, and mouth. The Images show how the human body can be affected by light, and how light can manipulate spacial conditions and people interactions

CHOSEN TEXTURE: CLOUDS Nature is a great resource for understanding lightweight structures, with numerous examples involving the intelligent use of non-representing geometry, material properties and material placement (i.e. the structure of a leaf). The aim of lightweight construction is to produce rigid components while using the least amount of material as possible. However, it has been complicated and expensive to copy complex natural structures with current manufacturing technologies. This objective can be achieved by structuring thin, sheet materials into the “third dimension� with simple and efficient manufacturing tools, which increases the flexural rigidity of the material while preserving its surface qualities.

CLOUD FORMATION: As defined by meteorology, a cloud is a visible mass of liquid droplets or frozen crystals made of water or various chemicals suspended in the atmosphere above the surface of a planetary body.

GEOMETERY ANALYSIS: The equilateral hexagons represent the Ice molecules, while the irregular hexagons are created from an aggregation of water molecules surrounding the ice molecule. The voids within the water molecules represent the air gaps where the molecules converge. The irregular shaped pentagons that emerged from the folding process creates the air pockets derived from the original pattern of the aggregation of water molecules that envelop around the ice molecule.

What does the word ‘Basic’ mean? Architecturally, “Basic” is often associated with the term primitive however, we sometimes forget to take into consideration the relative and temporal nature of the term. The competition asks to redefine the word ‘basic’ through an architectural intervention. Play is a basic need for the development of human growth. It provides for the skills that we use to live and survive from intellect, creativity, exploration, and even basic skills for social and physical growth. Parking Play takes the form of a prototypical mono-pitched-roof within the constraints of a standard shipping container allowing the project to easily travel from site to site. A series of slices divide the linear structure into nine blocks.

UB Graduate: Design Seminar Course: Post Modern Monuments Spring 2016 Instructor: Ang Li - (Reyner Banham Fellow)

Context: The industrial monument holds a contentious place in the architectural imagination. Situated somewhere between modern icons of progress and ruins of a post historical wasteland, these structures are best characterized as sites in transition, remnants of the past and fragments of a hypothetical future, at once site specific and universal. This project is an investigation into Buffalo’s grain elevators in order to re-evaluate the role of the industrial monument. By exploring the balance between construction and decay, the life cycles of building materials, and discrepancies in scale between the human and the industrial through the lens of the grain elevators; utilizing these relationships to challenge the way we view industrial obsolescence by revealing its architectural potential.

STRUCTURING GLASS

UB Graduate: Design Studio Course: Material Cultures Spring 2015 Instructor: Georg Rafailidis & Stephanie Davidson

Glass: An investigation into the joining of glass. Whilst investigating glass as an architectural system one thing that remained consistent in all precedent studies is that the glass is always held into place using a foreign material. Glass curtain walls use a combination of foreign objects, The curtain wall relies on silicones and metal spider clips to hold the glass in place. The question proposed in this investigation into the structuring of glass is “How can we join glass together without the need of a supporting material?” This investigation into the glass joint uses the glass’s inherent structural properties to create a new system of construction. The inherent structural properties of glass demonstrate that glass works better in compression than in tension, and that glass characteristically wants to be small in scale. By using these two strong realities of glass a series of designs were developed and constructed using these methods. The methodology of construction focuses on the creation of a modular system that relies solely on glass’s natural strength of compression to form the resulting enclosure.

Precedent: The final product is a modular system consisting of three different families of blocks. The first block acts as a compression ring taking on the bulk of the compressive loads from the overall weight of the structure. The second block allows for an increased flexibility of the structure allowing a shift in the forms section to start enclosing the dome like structure. The third and final family is designed with an increased tolerance to overcompensate for the overlapping joint conditions of the blocks geometry. The oculi at the apex of the domes are derived from the blocks minimum number of blocks required to form an enclosed circle.

Anamorphic Projection Theory: This investigation into the practice of projection mapping (by reconsidering the convention of how projection mapping is used in architecture) will attempt to bridge the gap between the practices of architecture and Theatrical set design’s by manipulating the convention of projection mapping, I can manipulate the spectators perception of how we see and interact with space. The thesis is directed through an explanation of the architectural history of illusionary space, and a series of well-defined experiments. The experiments initiated by skill-building in the projection mapping software a series of structured experiments are used to explore the potential as well as the limitations of the software. A set of parameters developed to structure a further set of experiments discerned how projection mapping can manipulate an existing architectural space in order to influence the movement of its occupants.

The Plan: The plan is read as a musical score which tells the occupants how to navigate the through the space. Shaping the plan around the movement of the spectators the libretto becomes the catalyst for the spatial configuration of the plan. The portals are aligned in relation to the projectors spray so that each informs the other without casting shadows. The conjoined planes are each rotated and displayed along several different axis’s around the room. The points labeled “A, B, and C” are the points perpendicular to the conjoined planes, where the imagery comes into focus, referred to as the “Aha Moment” the points labeled “A’, B’, and C’” are the points that are perpendicular to the existing plane where one conventionally stands when approaching a threshold. By activating the conjoined plane it forces the occupant to move around the space in until the “Aha Moment” is found.

Delimitations: The last phase of the thesis is the examination of the mundane archetypal space with an inherent program, such as a corridor filled with doors. This transitional space of a corridor acts as a threshold bridging the gap between the interior and the exterior just as the thesis attempts to bridge the gap between the set design, façade, theater and architecture. This installation is used to demonstrate how projection mapping can start to alter and manipulate the occupants’ movements in an existing space. These experiments influence the spectator’s interaction between space and place, within an altered perception of an existing environment through projection mapping. The resulted full scale interactive installation, developed from the parameters of projection mapping.

ONE

Outcome: A series of cohesive animations were designed using simple geometric forms. The circle was chosen for its unique properties when the circle comes in contact with a on linear plane, it becomes distorted and warped shifting into an ellipse, and then when it comes in contact with a corner or edge it splits into multiple surfaces. The reformed perceptions of the space influence the spectator’s sensory inhibitors to fully immerse them within the illusion of projection mapping. By reexamining how projection mapping has typically been used in the practices of architecture and theater, SPIRAL C ONE my thesis Mapping the Mundane seeks to showcase the medium of projection mapping in a way that is used to create a spectacle that influences how spectators perceive an existing space.

Design Precedents

Context: The town hub is to be developed with the community and college as a symbol of New Paltz and its commitment to sustainability in order to create a sense of community and learning while giving feedback on the progress of sustainability. The post office parking site will act as the town square that will link other parts of the project including renewable energy fields and the community app so that the community can participate in visioning the creation, monitoring, and stewarding of the community. Thus more identify with the urgent changes the town needs to make. The project shown are preliminary schematic drawings of the city of New Paltz post office parking lot alterations and the creation of an ample community park space for town events. BEARING (noun) - a person's way of standing or moving. An exploration of the dependence of architecture in context, Bearing derives expression from its site, (Letchworth State Park in Western New York). Letchworth’s defining gorge, was prehistorically carved into the earth by glaciers, and the Genesse River. The natural striations in the gorge are horizontal bands of shale, limestone, and sandstone, which are interrupted by cascading waterfalls and a soaring trestle train bridge. Lined with dense forests, the gorge’s expression of natural evolution creates a stimulating yet humbling atmosphere that inspires creativity. Based on a live/work artist program, each program occupies its own form and is assigned an associated view that aims to inspire, relax, and/or seclude its residents.

CONTEXT:

Skrim

Balanced on a steep forested hill overlooking the gorge and central waterfall, Bearing’s preliminary rectilinear form is elevated off the ground on a series of Miesian piloti’s and is subsequently offset, augmented, and reoriented based on the topography and views of the landscape. The building purposefully merges exterior and interior spaces in order to continually immerse its residents with the landscape through the use of glass and panoramic platforms that surround the three programmatic spaces. The workspace opens itself to the waterfall, while the living space extends towards the gorge, while the private space reaches towards the river. A protective skrim, like the forest, shelters the collection of forms and their platform, concealing them from view and protecting them from the elements. Interior and exterior spaces dissolve into Letchworth’s landscapes, igniting the creative process, inspiring its residents. Structure

A local developer proposed a five-story condominium building with approximately twenty units and ten townhouses for a City-owned 2.4 acre site at 240-260 Lakefront Boulevard. The accompanying design is the keystone project proposal that is to be located between the Portside and Marina Park complexes. The project team has been working with neighbors to refine the layout and design of the project. Company officials expect to present the project to the Planning Board early next year. Preliminary plans called for the condo buildings to be located between the Marina Park development and Portside’s reflecting pond. The townhouses would have lined Lakefront Boulevard across from the Breakwaters condominiums.

Post Graduate Work: Competition Firm: Carmina • Wood • Morris DPC Subject: Buffalo Public School District Board of Education (School of Hospitality) 2016-2017 Location: Buffalo NY, Ellicott Street

Mixed Use Development: Proposals for a second Emerson School of Hospitality include a new culinary institute as the anchor of a $70 million mixed-use project that would be built on Ellicott Street south of E. Tupper Street in Buffalo NY. The state-of-the-art culinary and hospitality school would include a test kitchen and accompanying restaurant that would occupy a site at 505 Ellicott Street where an office building has been planned. The proposed school would include classrooms, kitchens, a bakery, offices, a banquet facility and a public restaurant located on the Ellicott Street face of the building.

Urban Density: The Urban density and design refers to the number of people inhabiting the under utilized buffalo area. The Urban density is considered an important factor in understanding how cities function. The school-restaurant would add dining and event amenities increasing the cities walkablity to the pedestrian-friendly and restaurant-infused street for the benefit of the area’s many businesses and visitors. The site’s development would offer ramp parking along Oak Street, and additionally aid in the creation of a micro-unit apartment complex, and a new office building at the corner of Ellicott and E. RESTORATION

Post Graduate Work: Historic Preservation Firm: Carmina • Wood • Morris DPC Subject: Pierce Arrow “Building D” (Daylighting Factory) Location: Buffalo NY, Great Arrow Ave.

Historic Signifiance: The Pierce Arrow complex along Great Arrow Avenue is currently undergoing renovations and conversion into 72 market-rate apartments. The $13 million project conversion of The Pierce Arrow Factory aims to restore one of the first developed daylighting factory typologies in country. The Pierce Arrow Daylighting Factory was once a thriving automobile manufacturing complex that was constructed on the northwest quadrant of the Pan American Exposition site. Building “D” was one of the last buildings to be erected as the factory complex grew eastward from Elmwood Avenue.

The Restoration:

When Pierce Arrow went out of business and the factory closed, the complex was divided up and sold. All work is being designed in compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, focusing on restoration of the building’s concrete frame and expansive window openings replaced with newly thermal efficient windows closely resembling the historic industrial steel sash installed to light the new apartments.
