_AN INTRODUCTION TO THE AW14 RANGE The Dr. Martens’ AW14 range is inspired by early skinheads’ precise attention to detail, mixed with the brands history of rebellion. Around 1968-1969, this tribe sprang up across inner city Britain, with a fierce working-class pride and a strong anti-establishment attitude. Focusing on utility with a smart edge. Dr. Martens has picked out elements of this style to create a range that is heavily influenced by the movement and how they wore their boots and shoes. The brand’s designers even tracked down many vintage pairs from that era for particular inspiration to create both authentic versions of original styles, as well as modern takes on footwear worn in that time. The “Worn By You”, Archive and Made In England ranges epitomise this attention to detail. However, the whole range also shares this approach. Even the more refined products are pared back to only the absolute essentials. There is nothing unnecessary or overly designed. Showing that – as with skinhead – it is not just about boots. Dr. Martens have created an extensive line of shoes using the brand’s authentic DNA and heritage. Neither is this collection just about welted product. There are a number of more casual soles, fabrics and detailing ideas that present the skinhead style with a modern twist. Across the range, the colour palette is predominantly oxblood and black, with an additional number of carefully selected seasonal fabrics such as nylons, tartans, checks, camo, metallics, tattoos, florals, etching and a brocade.

Considered by many to be the purist punk’s choice of height, the 10-Eye has a slender calf which in turn serves to exaggerate and kick out the more bulbous steel capped toe.

ARCHIVE Created by looking into Dr. Martens archive for design inspiration, these styles have been replicated to look as they were when first manufactured. The specification on leather, colour and method of manufacture is precise. A more traditional biscuit-backed leather has been used, colour-matched to archive samples that came out of the factory in the earlier days of Dr. Martens. The last shape is shallower and the sole colour has also been altered to match the older shade. Laces are flat and cotton, exact copies of the original versions found.

REINVENTED: core applique The ultimate example of youth culture championing working-class style. Early skinheads in the 1960s originally wore actual factory steelies, often inherited from their dads. It wasn’t long before some skins cut away the leather on the toe to expose the metal underneath. The high shine toe caps on the Grip Shoe and Grasp Boot are combined with silver eyelets, white laces, a black welt stitch and a subtle heel tag script to keep the styles simple.

Basic factory footwear was appealing to early skinheads, providing the style inspiration for the Loafer, Lace Shoe and Lace Boot within the Hardwear styles. The Loafer has been updated and comes complete with a hint of fetish in the handcuff hardwear detail. The Lace Shoe combines an industrial silhouette with ski-hook eyelets taken from an archive DM’s shoe. Tattoos have been an important part of skinhead culture from its very beginnings, initially inspired by simple designs found on the arms of 1950s and 1960s British factory workers. A number of key emblems became a staple part of skin tattoo culture. The Tattoo Etched 3-Eye Shoe and Boot carry images etched into the Brando leather: a pair of swallows with hair clippers, the infamous ‘Cut Here’ mark that more extreme skins had etched across their throats, spiders’ webs, scorpions, stars and barbed wire roses. Youth subculture has always customised its own Dr. Martens. Likewise this same instinct to make an individual statement has seen tattoos become a crucial part of youth culture.

The Core Print segment takes the 8-Eye Boot and 3-Eye Shoe and covers them in bold, colourful tattoos, all designed in-house by the brand’s design team. The original skins’ ‘Spirit of 1969’ is still evident, with knuckledusters, a bulldog, skulls, a cherry red boot and spiders’ webs all included. Also featured are dice, crucifixes, a bleeding eye, a dagger slicing through the heel and the phrase ‘Stand For Something’, tying in with the current Dr. Martens marketing campaign.

This range offers styles that have the finish and appearance of well-worn footwear. Selected designs were pulled out of the archive or found in vintage stores, and then replicated using different finishing techniques at manufacture.

The suppleness of worn-in leather is duplicated by folding and bending the footwear by hand, to mimic the effect of years of wear. The leather surface has been deliberately scuffed to make it look ‘worn-in’. The styles have also been through an ‘antique-ing’ process - oxblood leather is over-polished with black, then buffed to a shine, leaving black polish in the crevices, as well as on the grooved sole and the stitching.

re-invented: CORE On the Lester 3-Eye Shoe and Castel 8-Eye Boot, a new canvas in black or khaki has been applied to an 8-Eye boot, inspired by the MA-1 bomber jacket - a classic subcultural style. The jackets were originally used in the 1950s by United States Air Force pilots. The vibrant orange lining was intended as a safety feature, the idea being to turn the jacket inside out for high visibility in the event of a crashed pilot becoming lost on manoeuvres.

rugged: CORE Appealing to an interest in minimalist fashion, Raw and Hide are both deliberately and carefully deconstructed. Both the Lace Shoe and Lace Boot have been pared back by taking linings out and using thick quality Brando leather, complete with chunky stitching. Even the laces are made in leather and square-cut. This deliberate simplification with quality materials results in raw-edged but premium products that will appeal to the no-fuss consumer. Early skinheads adopted the fashion of the factory but were also fascinated by elements of military wear. In the late 1960s, army and navy clothing was easy to buy and affordable. Its functionality and powerful image also appealed. This fact has been used on an 8-Eye boot, a refined Brogue shoe and a 3-Eye shoe which have all been wrapped in British Camo patterns. The Wilder and 3989 mix the Camo canvas with a rich, burnished leather for an interesting combination. The 3-Eye is made even more contemporary with an allover camo. All sit on a rugged Ben outsole to reinforce the impression of military strength.

REINVENTED: core These dainty new styles are based on an archive photograph of Dr. Klaus Maertens fitting a women’s shoe in the 1950s that was found in the brand’s Heritage Museum in Northampton. The 1-Eye Shoe is a very feminine cut, tapered and refined, with laces that are aged to suit the style. The hupper has replicated the vintage styles from our archive but have been placed on a modern, pointed last. The 10-Eye boot was always a very popular height within skinhead culture. The Core Alix is a boot inspired by skinhead girls. The slender upper will hug the calf and the refined toe adds to the feminine look. Antiqued gold eyelets add subtle detail.

While 1960s first generation skinheads were stripping back fashion to its essentials, London dandies were championing far more elaborate style. Cravats and silk ties with jacquard prints are obvious examples. For the 5-Eye Shoe and 7-Eye Boot in the Kensington segment, a silver geometric pattern inspired by these designs is offered on a refined last. The Jodphur Boot is a vintage style, offered here in either a cherry red high shine, rub-off Arcadia, or a suede/leather mix that is based on some actual 1960s boots found by the design team. The strapping wraps around and under the heel counter and there is a self-scripted heel tag. The classic 5-Eye Oxford Shoe is very sleek in profile and has new leathers for this style, a black Polished Smooth or the Cherry Red Arcadia. The slender air-cushioned sole is from DM’s archives, complemented by leather lining and a plain welt.

It has also developed a very distinctive style and this has been used as the inspiration for two new boots for AW14. The Kathleena is a calf-height boot with a fold-down option. It is based on an engineer boot but uses buckles instead of laces. The same versatility is found with the 9-Eye Toe Cap Aimilita. The linings here offer a choice of a 1960s-inspired geometric pattern, a printed green camo or a floral Belladonna. A variety of laces reinforces the bootâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flexibility.

_FITTING INFORMATION - DIFFERENT LAST SHAPES Over the history of Dr. Martens, our core Original styles have epitomised the look which people immediately associate with the brand, be it the 1460 8-eye boot, the 1461 3-eye boot, the 1914 14-eye boot or our classic Mary Jane. When shoes are made, the ‘last’ shape is usually in wooden or plastic form and shaped roughly like a foot which determines the fit and style of a boot or shoe. Fundamentally, in today’s product offering, Dr. Martens uses three main last shapes on core Original styles, namely the “59” last, the “84” last and the “Comfort” last (available specifically in both Men’s/Unisex and Women’s) Each of these lasts differ in their shape and fit, resulting in aesthetic differences, mainly to the toe area of the boot or shoe.

The Comfort last, in both versions of Men’s and Women’s, was introduced in 2006, which allows for a more generous fit to that of the 59 or 84 lasts, and provides the wearer that additional comfort. Aesthetically, the shape of the last and hence the shoe or boot, will be slightly wider and fuller when compared to either the 59 or 84 last. The Comfort last allows a full footbed (insole) to be inserted into the shoe/boot, whereas the 59 and 84 last shapes allow for a rear heel footbed (insole) only. The below images show a toe down comparison of these different lasts on our 1460 8-eye boot and on our 1461 3-eye shoe. These images illustrate the subtle difference in shape and width of each last.

The 59 last is acknowledged as an amalgam of many lasts within our business, which originated in the mid 80’s and has since become known as the classic last shape for Dr. Martens core Original styles. The 84 last is a more refined version of the 59 last, which has a sleek, tapered shape to the toe.
