JONATHAN SIMKHAI NYFW

JONATHAN SIMKHAI “SPRING/SUMMER RTW 2016”

Established in 2010, the Jonathan Simkhai brand provides luxury ready-to-wear for the modern woman. The core aesthetic philosophy plays with the tension of feminine strength and sensuality; this is reflected in the employment of customized fabrics, romantic detailing, linear lines, and contoured silhouettes. As a 2015 winner of the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, Jonathan Simkhai continues to redefine the 21st century wardrobe and reinvigorate American fashion.

WORKING WITH JONATHAN SIMKHAI During my time at Jonathan Simkhai, I was very much given the opportunity to be as hands-on as possible. I worked alongside the design and production team and Jonathan himself to produce the Spring/Summer 2016 which was showcased at Milk Studios, NYC during New York Fashion Week in September 2015. Technical lace, embroidered macramé, and bonded burnout were rendered into figure-hugging cocktail frocks inspired by the tropes city-dwellers overlook every day—skyscrapers, subway grates, and scaffolding. The collection obtained rave reviews from the industry’s leading fashion publication; VOGUE. I was also given the chance to produce garments that was worn by numerous celebrities such as Sandra Bullock, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Cate Blanchett, Demi Lovato and Scarlett Johansson.

CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS

CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN “MELTING COATS” & “YAYOI KUSAMA” Central Saint Martins is a world famous arts and design college and part of University of the Arts London. The College’s alumni include artists and designers who have challenged and shaped the world around . To name a few ; The late Alexander Mcqueen, Stella Mccartney, John Galliano, Phoebe Philo, Ricardo Tisci, and Christopher Kane. I graduated from Central Saint Martins in year 2014 with a Graduate Diploma in Fashion Studies with Distinction Honours. During my time there, I was exposed to the makers and players of the fashion industry in London. Among my many collections that I have produced during my time there, ‘Melting Coats’ and ‘ Yayoi Kusama’ were my two favourites . MELTING COATS This collection touches on the ongoing process of an object melting and freezing. Inspired by artist Livia Marin, who made ceramics look like it was melting, I then applied it to clothes.; from melting houndstooth to plaids and embossing parts of deconstructed form of a coat. Imagine a coat melting into a dress. or perhaps, a dress melting into a coat, or even a corset melting into a dress? The many possibilites of new patterns and forms by merging two solid objects by liquidfication. YAYOI KUSAMA Wholly inspired by her work and Yayoi Kusama herself, I designed a collection that tells the story of how she is as a person. She is infamous for her polka dots and her collaboration with Louis Vuittion in 2012 which launched her to worldwide fame. Though being a public figure, Yayoi is very much an isolated creature; often camouflaging herself in her work. I created a print illusion by deconstruting the sizes of the polka dots and by carefully arranging them . Materials used were neoprene, scuba and foam.

DIESEL

DIESEL “PIMP MY JEANS” Diesel is an innovative international lifestyle company, producing a wide-ranging collection of jeans, clothing and accessories. Since its creation in 1978, Diesel has experienced extraordinary growth and has evolved from being a leading pioneer in denim into the world of premium casual wear, becoming a true alternative to the established luxury market. PIMP MY JEANS COMPETITION 2012 In year 2012, Diesel launched a competition ‘ Pimp my Jeans’ . We were given pairs of jeans from Diesel and were told to transform the jeans into a new creation. The only rule was to use at least 80% Diesel jeans for the creation. My idea was to create a handbag camouflaged as a jacket. I then developed the idea OF having it reversible so that it can be worn on the right and left side. Each sides is a different design. I used PVC black leather in the design to compliment the jeans material.

TRIUMPH

TRIUMPH INSPIRATION AWARD “ICONS” It all began in a barn: The transformation of Triumph International from a tiny Southern German corset factory back in 1886 into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of lingerie and underwear is a global success story. Triumph today enjoys a presence in over 120 countries all across the world. For its brands Triumph and sloggi the company develops, produces and sells underwear, lingerie, sleepwear and swimwear, fusing excelling quality in workmanship, unrivalled fit and the latest in fashionable design.

MANDELA’S TRIUMPH FOR TRIUMPH INSPIRATION AWARD 2009 The competition’s theme given was ‘Icons’. I picked Nelson Mandela. Dealing with the issue of Apartheid, I played with the elements of black and white, interpreting racism while using literal shapes of hands to portray the struggle between the two races. I used the form of hands to represent the races; black and white. Nelson Mandela was not only an icon, he was a savior.

SAMSUNG S3 LAUNCH

SAMSUNG S3 LAUNCH “GEORGANIC” For over 70 years, Samsung has been dedicated to making a better world through diverse businesses that today span advanced technology, semiconductors, skyscraper and plant construction, petrochemicals, fashion, medicine, finance, hotels, and more. Our f lagship company, Samsung Electronics, leads the global market in high-tech electronics manufacturing and digital media. SAMSUNG S3 LAUNCH 2010 IN ASSOCIATION WITH MALAYSIAN OFFICIAL DESIGNERS ASSOCIATION (MODA) Mixing organic shapes with symmetric geometry, my collection entitled ‘Georganic’ was inspired by the combination of nature within modernism that exists in the world today. The focus on nature in this man-made environment induces a non-stress atmosphere, in which plays a crucial objective into producing the collection. Orchids, waves, pebbles and leaves were the primary shapes that I’ve played around in creating 3D dimension-inspired looks to exude the same euphoric atmosphere. The materials used are felt and net. All looks are top to toe in one colour. The colours used are neon pink, neon green and bright purple. The collection is light, beautiful and exudes nothing but constant euphoria.

MALAYSIAN YOUNG DESIGNERS AWARDS ( MYDC) YOUNG DESIGNER AWARDS MERCEDES BENZ FA SHION WEEK

“REVENGE OF THE DIVORCEE “ Founded in 1990, The Malaysian Official Designers Association M(ODA), a non-profit organization marked its 26th Anniversary in 2016. The association represents the interest of fashion designers to help nurture the growth of this industry in Malaysia as well as to provide a platform for Malaysian fashion designers.

This collection tells a personal story of a divorce. To evoke the emotions of a woman experiencing divorce, I twisted menswear into wearable womenswear. By deconstructing collars, menswear patterns and placards, this collection is dedicated to all the strong women in the world today. Fabric used was 100% cotton.
