ZOE GOODMAN Architecture and Design Portfolio Winter 2017
HELLO!
My name is Zoe Goodman. I am in my third year at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I am endlessly curious, passionate about my work, self disciplined, independent, sociable, cooperative, easy going, and enthusiastic. When I am not happily getting lost in the world of architecture, I enjoy visiting museums and art galleries, canoe tripping, swimming, rock climbing, reading the newspaper, listening to jazz, traveling, filling sketchbooks, collaging, meeting new people, playing guitar, keeping up with design blogs, and taking photographs.

Bears Den Bay, The French River
Great Lakes Water Research Centre is a university associated research centre located a five minute motor boat ride/ half hour canoe into the lower French River. The design is driven by the drastically changing number of occupants which depends on the seasons. In the winter a small handful of professors and research assistants use the permanent winter lab building to study samples collected in summer. Every summer the Great Water Research lab really comes alive. A large group of students camp at the lodge and assist a small group of professors with their research, and to study.

RUA VISCONDE DE PIRAJA THIRD YEAR DESIGN STUDIO Group Project with Kenishaa Katyal and Christy Cheng
Rhinoceros, AutoCAD, Illustrator, Indesign
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
As an introduction to an upcoming master planning project, we were assigned a street analysis project, completed in one week. Our group was assigned the Rua Visconde de Piraja, the main shopping street in Ipenema, an area known for its beautiful beaches. After a detailed analysis of the area we discovered that it is composed of an extremely mixed assortment of buildings ranging in size and use, scattered randomly throughout the area. A sucessful example urban design Jane Jacobs proposes in her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Churches sit across the street from night clubs, and low income residents sell produce at farm stands adjacent to high end condomiums.

Seljavallalaug 63°33’58.0”N 19°36’31.1”W
Seljavallalaug is a swimming pool located just outside of Seljavellir in South Iceland. It was constructed in 1923, abandoned in 1990 and has not been regularly maintained since. Seljavallalaug is heated by runoff from a nearby natural hot spring and is therefore warm enough to swim in year round. Seljavallalaug is still a popular destination for locals and the few foreigners who know about it. HVERINN provides visitors to Seljavallaug a changing station and warming spot, a get away from the harsh cool and very windy Icelandic climate.

Small overhang to protect facade from rain. Minimal overhang needed as solar gain is important in all seasons
Vestibule entry to minimize infiltration and eliminate drafts as the site is very windy (and cold) Four inch thick thermal mass (concrete wall) to store solar gain
Slate tile sits on top of a concrete slab which rests above insulation. This organization of floor materials acts as a thermal mass to radiate heat from absorb southern light

Public parks provide an oasis from urban life to people of all backgrounds and circumstances. They provide their visitors with a place to play, gather, escape and interact. Park People brings a public park and skating rink to Cambridge, Ontario and includes housing which reflects on the qualities of a public park and applies them to apartment living.
26
The design approach was to minimize the building footprint in order to maximize area for the park. This resulted in a slim building which give residents slender apartments with abundant natural light. Inside, residents have complete control over how they wish to live. There are set bathrooms and hookups for a kitchen as well as small bedroom areas with storage, and the rest of the space is free for residents to use as they please. There are comunal kitchens and lounges throughout the building to supplement any amenities a resident wishes to leave out of their unit.

A MAKERS STUDIO FIRST YEAR DESIGN STUDIO Individual work
hand drafting, photoshop
Cambridge, ON
A Makers studio provides an artist in residence with a living space and a work space, and it provides the city of Galt with a gallery and an opportunity to watch the artist in residence at work. Carved into an existing berm, a Makers studio interrupts the public river walk on top of the berm and guides passersby into the courtyard of the makers studio. The makers studio is angled so that the gallery is close to the street, and the riverwalk while the residence is set much further back from the street, and it is tucked into some existing greenery for increased privacy. Separating the program into four buildings created smaller courtyards between them which become increasingly private as you move closer to the residence.

CENTRAL PARK SECOND YEAR STUDIO Individual work

New York, NY
The focus of our summer 2016 studio was landscape design. To prepare we were asked to create a set of drawings analyzing a specific aspect of the park assigned to us. This drawing set looks at a section of central park cut through four zones with distinctly different plantings, design and program in the park.

“THE PLANTING GENERALLY IS DESIGNED TO GIVE FROM THE GREATEST NUMBER OF POINTS OF VIEW WITHIN THE PARK, THE BROADEST EFFECT OF LIGHT AND SHADE WHICH CAN BE OBTAINED UPON THE GROUND, AND TO PRODUCE THE IMPRESSION OF GREAT SPACE AND FREEDOM.” Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted (Creating Central Park by Morrison H.
