H E LLO!

I’m Zoe Goodman. I am in my third year of architecture school at the University of Waterloo. My interests lie somewhere between art, sciences and a passion for being environmentally responsible. I try to incorporate a combination of rigorous logic, artistic intuition, and an appreciation for the natural world and human condition in all of my design work. When I am not happily getting lost in the world of architecture, I enjoy visiting museums and art galleries, canoe tripping, swimming, rock climbing, reading the newspaper, listening to jazz, traveling, filling sketchbooks, collaging, meeting new people, playing guitar, keeping up with design blogs and taking photographs.

HIATUS Rhinoceros, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign

For our third year design studio, we were required to design a mid-rise, mixed -use solution for postindustrial areas of Toronto. In the same way that the rail line presents a harsh contrast to the area it cuts through, Hiatus brings two community buildings meant to bridge the gap between residents, employees of local businesses and the public. One is designed for displaying and the other for performing and presenting. These are two focal points on the site which are drastically different to the rest of the buildings on the site in shape, geometry, program, and materiality, placed at the same upper level as the rail line, emphasizing its importance.

The lateral loading system consists of concrete cores, steel columns and floor slabs that act as diaphragms at the ground level. The same system continues in the towers above with the addition of shear walls. Lateral systems are integrated into the design so that they go unnoticed, as two large shear walls. Towers were designed to feel very open in the east west direction, taking advantage of some amazing views of downtown Toronto, and allowing lots of eastern sunlight into bedrooms on the east side of the residential tower.

A MAKER’S STUDIO Hand drafting

Cambridge, Canada

For the final project of our first ever design studio course, we were asked to design a 100m2 artist studio and residence using the hand drafting and modelling techniques we had learned throughout the term. A Makers Studio provides an artist-in-residence with a living space and a work space, and it provides the city of Galt with a gallery and an opportunity to watch the artist-in-residence at work. Carved into an existing berm, A Makers Studio interrupts the public river walk on top of the berm and guides passersby into the courtyard of the makers studio. The buildings are angled so that the gallery is close to the street and the riverwalk, while the residence is set much further back from the street, tucked into some existing greenery for increased privacy. Program is separated into four buildings with a series of smaller courtyards between them. The courtyards were designed to be increasingly private as you move closer to the residence.

WALLLLL Construction project

For our 2A Landscape studio, we were challenged to create an 8’ by 8’ pavilion in the span of one week. Our group designed and built a series of walls which seek to engage students passing by and provide them with an unexpected escape from the school. A series of four walls are arranged along the existing flood wall in our school’s back courtyard. Our walls were designed to be somewhat arbitrary at first glance, while providing a bench seat for those who wish to enter and a few nicely framed views of chosen spots along the river.

MINING CANADA’S NORTH: COLD URBANISM GIS, Rhinoceros, Illustrator, Photoshop

Following our field trip to a sub arctic mining town in Northern Quebec, we have been working on designing a mining town in Canada’s North in my current design studio course “Mining Canada’s North: Cold Urbanism” with Lola Sheppard. For the first project, we were asked to do a case study relating to arctic and sub-arctic town planning or mining in Canada. The maps here were taken from my case study on the Victor Diamond Mine in Northern Ontario.

For the second portion of Lola Sheppard’s studio, we have been working in pairs to develop a scheme for a Northern Mining town. The scheme my partner Liga Brammanis and I are currently developing looks at leveraging a 2 kilometre long dam that is currently being proposed to hold back tailings created at the south east end of the Lac Otelnuk mine. The town we have been designing embeds, hangs and rests along the dam. Services run through a single spine across the city, and the plan is compact, allowing for efficient movement of services, goods and people. The arrangement of buildings also encourages unique exchanges between programs.

GREAT LAKES WATER RESEARCH LAB Rhinoceros, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign

French River, Canada

For our third year design studio, we were asked to design a lodge in the Canadian Shield region. Great Lakes Water Research Centre is a proposal for University associated Research Centre located a five minute motor boat ride and or half hour canoe into the lower French River. The design is driven by the seasons and drastically changing number of occupants throughout the year. The winter lodge accommodates six people and can be used year round. This is reflected in its design and location on the site, attaching to an area of exposed Precambrian rock. The summer lodge is only used in summer months when the number of occupants on site reaches almost four times that in the winter, also reflected in its location on site and design. The lodge is designed to feel very connected to the outdoors, flooded with natural light, with big sliding doors that naturally ventilate the space. Bedrooms are replaced by tents, located on tent pads with built-in storage and electricity.

For the first six weeks of my work term I worked on a series of 9 two meter square panels for an exhibition at the Amsterdam’s Centre for Architecture. I was responsible for most of the 3D modeling, testing graphic techniques and creating about 50 hand drawn “Ij river monsters” that were placed throughout the drawings. After the exhibition I worked with various teams assisting to research and create drawings for projects with a variety of different scales and functions.

For this work term I drafted in 2D and 3D, created analytical diagrams, documented and analyzed site conditions after site visits for Development Permit and re-zoning submission packages. A large portion of the term was spent working closely with a Design Architect drafting options in 2D and 3D, attending meetings and coordinating with consultants, and creating a Development Permit submission package for the schematic design of a 70,000 sq. ft. office building to be built in Vancouver.

AutoCAD, Rhinoceros, 3D printing, laser cutting, handcutting,

For my first work term, I worked with individual architects or architectural teams to create architectural models of varying scales, sizes and timelines (from 1/2 inch scale interior models to large master plans). I used AutoCad for laser cutting, and Rhinoceros for 3-D printing. I also created hand cut process and presentation models using foam core, museum board, and foam.
