04 welcome home

Hello! Sometimes it feels as if this magazine just doesn’t have enough pages… There is so much happening this month, and we’ve done our very best to cover it all.

“You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.”

Desmond Tutu

First of all, we are celebrating Easter this month. That means the kids are on holiday, and you should be getting a bit of time off work too with all the public holidays. Spending time with your family is important over the Easter holidays, and one of the best ways to spend familytime is over a tasty meal, which is why Gloria is featuring an Easter feast in this issue’s recipes feature on page 28. Once your family has full tummies, they might want to relax with some family fun, and this month’s craft project (p 44) certainly is fun for the whole family. Since Easter is a holiday centred almost as much on food as it is on faith, we dedicate this issue’s Home Blueprint section (from p 16) to kitchen appliances, from fridges and freezers to kitchen smalls. And speaking of faith, we tackle the challenging situation of being in an interfaith relationship in our relationships feature on page 34. We also talk about the pros and cons of credit cards on page 38, before we start winding down by chatting to the gorgeous Joelle Kayembe (p 42). There’s all this and so much more in this issue of your Club magazine, and we hope you enjoy it all.

Until next month,

The culture of impunity

Have your say Feel strongly about something in your Club magazine? Then write to us or send us an e-mail...

Strikes have become a part of our South African calendar. Every year there are two or more national strikes. While workers have the right to strike, there is a growing tendency of vandalising property during these strikes and protests. As for the community protests, it is so astonishing to note that before reaching a 100-day milestone after elections, peo-

ple were already on the streets. It makes one wonder why they voted for those councillors if they believed that they are unfit for the job. Above all, some innocent people are beaten or even killed for simply not taking part in strikes or protests. Is this the freedom we wanted? Is the right to protest greater than the right to human life or dignity? If this culture of impunity is not thwarted in the bud, our rainbow nation will degenerate to a kangaroo state. F Msebele, via e-mail

What happened to our country? Our president was once a leader of moral regeneration, but he was relieved from his duties by the former president due to his not so good involvement. I’m saying this after what happened with the two cops that were caught in an indecent situation. I am asking myself, as a country, do we really still cherish our origin? Or have we sold ourselves to the traditions of other nations? And if we have sold ourselves, have we taken a moment to think that those we try to portray are interested in who we are? we Give your family peace of mind in a crisis with this very important benefit from your ClubPlus. HOW DOES THE FUNERAL COVER WORK? 1 As a CLUBPlus member, you are automatically covered from your first instalment linked to your CLUBPlus membership, or your signed instruction that grants your store permission to deduct your furniture purchase instalment, which includes your premium, by means of a debit or stop order on the specified date. 2 Members must register their beneficiaries with Sanlam on telephone number 086 030 2922, or register via fax number 012 342 5541/5543/7575 once they’ve joined the Club. 3 Members will be covered up to a value of R9 000, which is made up of R5 000 funeral cover and R4 000 accidental death cover. 4 There is a six-month waiting period before cover comes into effect if the member dies a natural death. This means that your family or beneficiary can only claim your R5 000 in funeral cover after you have been a member of the Club for six months and if your account payments – including your Club membership – are fully up to date. 5 Once the six-month waiting period is over and if the member’s account is fully up to date, his or her family can claim R5 000 in funeral cover even if the member dies of an illness that he or she already had. 6 If the member dies accidentally within this six-month waiting period, we will pay-out within 48 hours. Your family will receive the R9 000, provided that the member’s existing account is fully up to date. This means there is no waiting period. 7 The funeral and accidental death insurance covers only the Club member, and not immediate family members. 8 Nothing will be paid if the cause of death is suicide. 9 Cover will only be provided if the member’s existing account is up to date. 10 Cover is available to members between the ages of 18 and 84.

Case studies ASK ELIZABETH Elizabeth is just one of the knowledgeable nurses you can contact on the Europ Assistance line. Speak to any one of the qualified nurses on duty for advice.

Q I’m a 38-year-old single man. I don’t have a partner or a child, as I have trouble showing my interest in ladies, because I have a weak erection. I think this means that I can never have children. Do you know where I can get some help for my problem? A Many men suffer from erectile dysfunction, which is an inability to obtain or maintain an erection. Some of the reasons could be anxiety or fear of failure in the bedroom, feelings of inferiority, a loss of self-worth after losing a job, or when a partner openly despises her man. There are also physical causes such as diabetes (common), syphilis and damage to the penis, operations, hormone deficiencies, and certain vascular conditions. Some men also suffer from premature ejaculation, which can happen before, during, or shortly after penetration into the vagina. Women take longer to build up to an orgasm, and a man needs to learn to control the timing of his ejaculation to allow her time to catch up. The right timing of the ejaculation is a learnt skill, not something that will just naturally happen. This problem is most common in younger men. I would advise you to see your doctor for an examination. If you are on any medication the doctor can review or replace that with something else. Otherwise, he or she might want to do some tests for other causes.

Heart-condition help Club member Mrs J’s husband was a heart patient. So when he complained in the middle of the night of severe pain in his left arm and a heavy feeling on his chest, she immediately called the Health Assist helpline. “Take your husband to hospital immediately”, Vanessa, the highly trained nurse who took the call, advised Mrs J. She also offered to dispatch an ambulance, but Mrs J said that she would be able to take him to hospital herself. When Vanessa called to check up the following day, Mrs J said that her husband had refused to go to hospital. Instead, he put a TNT tablet under his tongue, which eased the pain, and he was feeling much better. While Vanessa was pleased to hear this, she urged Mrs J to convince her husband to go to the doctor anyway, if only to check that everything was all right.

Painful bladder When her nine-year-old granddaughter suddenly started wetting her bed, Mrs H contacted the Health Assist helpline for help. She told Tumi, the experienced nurse who took the call, that her granddaughter also complained of pain when she passed urine, and that her urine had a strong smell. Tumi advised Mrs H to take her granddaughter to a doctor within the next 24 hours. “Meanwhile, make sure that she drinks plenty of clear fluids, such as clear juice (apple or grape) and water,” advised Tumi. “But don’t give her any fizzy drinks, as that makes urine alkaline,” she warned. When Tumi called back the following day to follow up, Mrs H said that

she had taken her granddaughter to the doctor. He diagnosed a bladder infection and prescribed medication to restore the little girl to health.

Too much sweat In spite of washing the areas frequently and using deodorant, Club member Mrs L suffered from heavy sweating under her arms and in her groin. So she called the Health Assist helpline. Sharon, the friendly, qualified nurse who took the call, advised Mrs L to wash the areas with an antiseptic soap. She also suggested that Mrs L speak to her pharmacist and ask for a lotion containing 20-25% aluminium chloride in 70-90% alcohol. “You will need to apply this two to three evenings per week,” Sharon told Mrs L. “If that doesn’t help, you should see a doctor for an examination, as the heavy sweating might be due to an illness, such as malaria” When Sharon called back a few days later, Mrs L said that the pharmacist’s mixture was helping and thanked Sharon for her good advice.

Beware bogus schools Many people in this country are desperate to get a tertiary education, and this makes them easy prey for fake educational institutions.

I

!

n South Africa, many students who finish high school can’t continue their education, because of a lack of space or other problems at universities. So, because many of these students are desperate, they become the victims of bogus or flyby-night institutions offering useless qualifications. These students see the possibility of a quick certificate or degree. And only after they have spent a lot of time, energy and money do they realise that their fake qualifications are worth nothing. There are several important things to look out for when you register with an educational institution to ensure that you receive a legitimate education. Before registering, make an appointment with the principal or a senior staff member and ask to see the institution’s original registration certificate from the Department of Education. If it was established before 1995, it should have an original letter or certificate of registration issued by the former Department of Education and Training of the House of Representatives (Coloured Affairs) or the House of Delegates (Indian Affairs), or the provincial Department of Education. Also check with the Department of Education if the institution has been registered. In Gauteng, call 011 355 0026. (You can also call this

Turn to page 45 to stand a chance to win an Intec bursary from your Club.

number for the number to call in your area). The name and address of the institution must match the information on the registration certificate. By law, the principal must have a professional qualification, so you can ask to see his or her certificate that he or she is a qualified teacher. Genuine professional educators will not only happily comply immediately, but will probably have their certificates hanging in their offices. Also ask if the institution is accredited by Umalusi, the body set up by the Department of Education to ensure that quality learning and teaching takes places in schools. If it does not have either provisional or full accreditation, ask what steps are being taken to comply with the law. The following information should always be available in any organised place of higher learning: the printed brochure with admission requirements, the fee structure, the code of conduct, and the contract between the school and the parents. Be sure to check the condition of the buildings and ablution facilities and ask if the institution has been issued with a health certificate. If any documents or information you ask for are not immediately available and aren’t perfectly clear, think twice before registering. Otherwise you might end up spending money on an “education” that is completely worthless.

Then, when we received our certificates, they showed that we had only done three modules – and they don’t have the SAQA symbol. What can we do? A It would appear that the institution at which you took your course may be illegitimate, fake or bogus. There are many fraudulent, unregistered schools, colleges and universities in the country that recruit students through websites, newspaper ads, and brochures handed out on the streets. Ask to see the education and training provider’s certificate of registration with the Department of Education. The Department keeps a national register of private colleges and Private Higher Education Institutions, listing all the education and training providers registered with the Department. And note that even though an education and training provider may be accredited by an Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body, this does not mean that all the qualifications it offers are automatically accredited. Check this by asking for the SAQA ID number of the specific qualification you are interested in. If you have done all this and have realised that you have been defrauded by the institution, calculate the damages you have suffered as a result. If the claim is less than R12 000, you can approach the Small Claims Court for a Letter of Demand to be sent to the institution to give your money back. If the total claim against the institution is more than R12 000, you will need an attorney to issue a Summons against the institution. Useful contacts for the school registrations bodies: The Council for Higher Education (overseeing Higher Education): 012 392 9100 Umalusi (overseeing General and Further Education up to grade 12): 012 349 1510 South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA): 012 431 5170

1 2 3 4 5 6 In the olden days, fridges and freezers only came in standard white. Now they come in a range of different finishes, so ask you salesperson about colour options.

Transporting your new fridge or freezer from the store to your home can be tricky but, for a nominal fee, your favourite store will deliver it for you. Ask instore for details.

Some of the fancier fridges come with water and ice dispensers. These fridges will cost a little more than those without, but the added luxury of having ice water on tap may be worth it.

Remember, you will need an electrical outlet to plug your fridge into. And if you are buying a fridge with ice and water dispensers, you will need additional plumbing too.

Clean your fridge and freezer out regularly. Keeping food that has gone off in your fridge can make good food go bad faster.

Many modern fridges are advertised as being ‘frostfree’. This is a great feature, because it means you will spend less time defrosting and cleaning your fridge.

keeping your cool In our warm climate, your fridge is one of the most important appliances in your home.

A

fridge is one of the few major appliances that you really cannot live without. You need one to keep all your fresh foods fresher for longer, and a fridge with a freezer helps you save money in the long run, because it means that you can stock up when there are specials on at your local butcher and other food retailers. But, as with so many appliances these days, the options when buying a new fridge or freezer seem endless.

What are the freezer facts? Having enough freezer space is an advantage for any family, be it large or small, but it’s particularly beneficial for larger families. This is because having the ability to freeze large quantities of food means that you can buy food in bulk, which often saves you money. And not only can you buy in bulk when you have a spacious freezer, but you can cook in bulk too! If you are making something that is easy to freeze, such as a stew or soup, for example, why not make two meals’ worth and freeze C L UB

half for another time, when you don’t feel like cooking? Even with a freezer built in to your fridge, large families might find it necessary to supplement that freezer with a separate, larger one. So let’s take a look at the options. Chest freezers. These freezers are very spacious, allowing you to buy in bulk and save money on groceries. They are available from your favourite store in a variety of sizes, and are relatively inexpensive to buy, as well as economical when it comes to the amount of electricity they use. However, they do take up a lot of space, which

traditional fridge

Perhaps your old fridge has just given up and you need to replace it as soon as possible. Or maybe you just want to replace your old faithful fridge, because it’s using too much electricity and you need something more economical. Or you could be moving into your first home and buying a fridge for the very first time. No matter what your reason for going fridge shopping, you need to know what you are looking for, so let’s take a look at the different types of fridges you will find at your favourite store: The traditional fridge. This type of fridge has a larger refrigeration area and a relatively small freezer area on top.

is a problem for most of us. They are also difficult to organise and it can be a challenge getting to the food stored at the bottom of the freezer. Upright freezers. These are the complete opposite to chest freezers. They’re easy to organise and make reaching your foods easier. They’re easier to clean too, and take up less floor space in the kitchen. But they cost a little more, use more electricity than a chest freezer, and may have to be specially ordered by your favourite store. So, if you’re interested but don’t see one on display, speak to a friendly salesperson.

Chest freezer

These fridges are great for single people or small families who live in homes where space is limited. Since they have such a small freezer space, it’s best to work on a buy-and-cook basis, buying fresh food regularly and cooking it in the next few days. If you only have the space for this type of fridge, but you have a large family, you may want to look at the option of buying a chest freezer to store extra food. Combi-fridges. These days, this is probably the most popular type of fridge. They are tall units divided across the middle horizontally with the fridge on the top and the freezer on the bottom. This makes sense, because we need to access the fridge far more regularly than we need to access our freezers. They are so popular because they are both well-priced, so you save money now, and they are economical, so you save money in the long run too. Side-by-side fridges and freezers. These are perfect for larger families, because they generally have equal fridge and freezer space, which is fantastic for people who shop in bulk and then freeze food for months. And even though this style of fridge is bigger than the traditional fridge, the clever door design means that they don’t need as much space in front of them. The doors are narrower, so they can open into a smaller space. This door design also means that you save money on electricity because you are only opening the section of the fridge or freezer that you need to get to, so less cool air escapes.

No matter what combination of fridge and freezer you decide is best for you, it is important to treat it with the care that it deserves. This means keeping it clean and defrosting it regularly, as this will prolong the lifespan of your fridge-freezer, giving you even more value for your money. To save energy, pack your freezer at least three-quarters full. If necessary, fill up the empty space at the bottom with plastic containers filled with water, so that the motor has less air to cool.

To save money, be smart about electricity. Fridges and freezers are so much a part of life that it’s easy to forget that they push up our electricity accounts. So make sure that the fridge or freezer you buy is energy-efficient. Most manufacturers now label their products with coloured bars, with green being more efficient and red being less efficient. Ask your salesperson about the electricity consumption before buying any new product.

Fast fridge 3 and freezer facts Tip!

To save time, after defrosting and wiping the clean freezer dry, spray the inside with Spray and Cook – the non-stick action means that the ice will come off much easier next time.

4

Never leave your fridge or freezer door open for longer than necessary. This allows the cool air to escape and lets warm air in, so it has to work extra hard to get the temperature down again. This uses extra electricity and shortens the lifespan of your fridge or freezer.

1 2 3 4 5 6 Kitchen smalls, such as a kettle, a toaster, and an iron are often available as a set at your favourite store. This is a great, inexpensive way to bring your kitchen together visually.

From time to time, your favourite store may offer a small appliance, such as a microwave, as a gift when buying a larger, more expensive appliance. Ask your friendly salesperson about your store’s special offers.

Microwaves are available in a number of sizes to suit your family’s needs. The size is measured in litres to indicate how much the oven can hold – a small microwave is usually 20L, while a family-sized microwave is 30L or more.

Because slow cookers cook on a low heat for a long time, it is perfectly suitable to use cheaper cuts of meat as they will tenderise during the cooking process. So not only does your slow cooker save you time and electrcity, but it saves you money too.

When cleaning your Tefloncoated electric frying pan, remember to use a mild detergent, such as dishwashing liquid, and a soft plastic sponge to prevent the coating from becoming damaged.

If there is a bad smell in your microwave, heat a bowl of white spirit vinegar in the microwave for a minute or two. The vinegar will kill the bacteria, which means the smell that the bacteria cause will disappear too.

Improving your quality of life doesn’t always have to be a big job. There are many small ways to make your life easier.

A little electric

W

hen you think of shopping at your favourite store, chances are you are thinking about buying products that require movers and delivery charges. But we don’t only sell lounge suites and large appliances. There’s a whole range of products that can make your life a whole lot easier and that require nothing more than you walking into the shop, choosing the product you want, and leaving with that product. We are, of course, talking about smaller kitchen appliances, also known as kitchen smalls. Stoves may be a necessity, but if you had to use them to heat or cook every little thing, your electricity bill would be astronomical. Imagine you had to boil your water on your stove every time you wanted a cup of tea. Or place your bread under the grill every time you wanted a piece of toast. Having a kettle and a toaster to perform these tasks saves you loads of money on your electricity bill, because they are small and it takes very little electricity to make them work. But you can also take this idea of getting smaller appliances to perform the tasks that your stove would traditionally perform to the next level.

Take it slow Imagine a world where, when you came home from work, dinner was ready and waiting. This may sound like a dream in which you have your own personal chef cooking for you while you go about your business of the day, but you can make this dream a reality with a slow cooker. All you need to do is put your meat and vegetables into the slow cooker before you go to work and dinner will be ready and waiting for you when you get home. This is great for any working parent, because it means that the time that you would’ve spent slaving over a hot stove, you can now spend with your family. C L UB

Out of the frying pan Another great small appliance that can save you both time and electricity is an electric frying pan. It is far more economical than using a hot plate on your stove, and there are many time-saving recipes that are created especially for this handy appliance. It’s also very compact, so once you have finished cooking, all you need to do is clean it and put it away in your kitchen cupboard. It’s really that simple.

Top electric frying pan tip

Electric frying pans are generally treated with a non-stick Teflon coating. To prevent that coating from getting scratched, stay away from metal cooking implements. Rather stick to wooden or nylon spoons and spatulas to keep your Teflon scratch-free.

Riding the wave Over the years, this practical appliance has become less of a nice-to-have and more of a kitchen essential. We are, of course, talking about the microwave. This handy little device can be used for defrosting frozen foods, heating up leftovers, making snacks such as popcorn, and even following recipes that have been especially designed for microwaves. These days you can even bake a cake in a microwave! There are many foods that one traditionally cooked on the stove that are just as good prepared in the microwave in a fraction of the cooking time, as well as the electricity usage. These include boiled or steamed vegetables, rice, and even scrambled eggs or omelettes. They are also much safer for older children to use than the stove, so they can heat up their own after-school meal.

Top microwave tip

If your coffee has gone cold and you want to heat it up in the microwave, don’t just pop it straight in. Add a splash of water first, as this will prevent it from getting that bitter, reheated taste. And never let your coffee come to the boil in the microwave.

Top slow cooker tip

If you are using the slow cooker while you are around the house, resist the urge to lift the lid to see how your food is doing. The steam generated while cooking creates a vacuum that seals the lid, and every time you open the lid, steam and heat escape, which prolongs the cooking time. april 2012

our Club wants you to get the most out of your appliances that you possibly can, and often that means freshening things up a bit. Here we give you some great tips on how to make those kitchen smalls sparkle like the day you bought them.

Your microwave To clean your microwave oven, mix together two tablespoons of lemon juice or vinegar with two cups of water. Put the solution in a microwave-safe bowl big enough to only half fill it. Microwave on high for two to three minutes. Then remove the bowl carefully as the contents will be very hot. Remove the glass carousel and wipe down the inside of the microwave with paper towels. Wash the glass carousel separately with warm, soapy water and a sponge. But be very careful to not chip or break it. Those glass plates can be expensive to replace, if you can even find the right one for your model of microwave.

Your slow cooker Always wait for your slow cooker to cool down completely before cleaning. Then remove the inserts and lid to wash in warm, soapy water. They are generally dishwasher safe, but be sure to check the owner’s manual before putting them in the dishwasher. If any food has spilled onto the outside of the pot, wipe down with a damp cloth. If food is stuck to the pot and a damp cloth just isn’t doing the trick, a little dishwashing liquid and a rub with a sponge should get that grime off. Never use abrasive detergents as this will damage the finish of your pot.

Everyday wear and tear can leave your kitchen smalls looking a little shabby, but here are some tips to get them looking as good as new again.

If your vegetables are looking a little wilted, don’t just throw them away. Simply cut off any brown bits, sprinkle some water over them, and pop them in the fridge for about an hour. Provided they weren’t too far gone, this will make them edible again.

2

Do you have walls with grubby little fingerprints on them? All you need to do is take a wet-wipe and wipe off any marks. As long as the marks aren’t too stubborn, they should come right off.

3

Silk flowers are great, but they tend to get a bit dusty. If your silk flowers are dusty, just spray them with some hairspray to get them looking new again. And if they get dusty again, simply blow the dust off with a hairdryer.

Ants in your kitchen can be a nuisance, and insecticides are poisonous, so what can you do? Simply mix some dishwashing liquid and water in a spray bottle and spray the solution on the ants. It kills them almost instantly and it’s non-toxic.

5

To remove the bleach smell from hands, as well as that slimy feeling, pour a little vinegar or lemon juice over your hands, then rinse. The acid in the vinegar or lemon cancels out the alkalinity of the bleach.

home life Keeping busy There’s a lot happening in the world around us during the month of April. Sure, we know about Easter and Freedom Day, but did you know that it is also World Malaria Day on 25 April? Malaria is a preventable disease that still claims too many lives, so we look at what can be done to try and eliminate it as much as possible. And just two days later we celebrate Freedom Day, which of course commemorates South Africa’s first fair and free elections in 1994. Can you believe the new South Africa is already 18 years old? There’s so much to think about this month.

World Malaria Day Malaria is an easily preventable disease that is still far too common in much of the world.

W

orld Malaria Day is an awareness programme that aims for zero malaria deaths by 2015. When you consider that an estimated 655 000 people died from malaria in 2010, it seems like a near-impossible goal. But even though malaria is a very dangerous disease if contracted, it is also very easily prevented.

What is malaria?

World Malaria Day is on 25 April!

It is a mosquito-borne virus, which means that you can contract it if you get bitten by a mosquito carrying the disease. Once the disease is in the blood stream, the plasmodium parasites, which are parasites that attach themselves to the red blood cells, start multiplying and spreading through the entire body. Symptoms include headaches, high fevers, shivering, joint pain, vomiting, and convulsions, among others. It is most common in tropical and sub-tropical regions, as well as much of sub-Saharan Africa.

How can one prevent it? The simplest and most effective way to prevent malaria is to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes. The best way to do this is by putting mosquito screens up on your windows and doors, putting mosquito nets over you and your family’s beds, and applying mosquito repellent, especially at night. If you live in a malaria area, make sure you have all these precautions in place. You may have to spend a bit of money initially, but it’s really worth it when you consider what the alternative might be.

Is there a vaccine? Unfortunately, there is no malaria vaccine at the moment. But scientists are working hard on trying to find one. Preventative medication is available, but one shouldn’t take it for extended periods of time. This is usually only used when people from non-malaria areas travel into malaria areas. If you are planning to travel into a malaria area, speak to your doctor or local pharmacist about going on preventative malaria medica-

Can it be cured? Luckily, malaria can be cured relatively easily, depending on the strain. In the past, severe malaria was always treated with intravenous or intramuscular quinine, but since the mid-2000s, artesunate, which is a derivative of artemisinin, has been used quite often. It has produced better results than quinine in both children and adults.

Is it getting better? According to statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the malaria death toll is significantly dropping each year. This is largely owing to the preventative measures being taken by people living in malaria areas. Not too long ago, over a million people a year were dying of malaria, and now that number has been reduced by over 25 percent. But, although we are heading in the right direction, this decrease needs to keep happening year after year until we can say that nobody is dying of malaria any more.

The female mosquitoes prefer to feed at night, starting at dusk and feeding all the way through until dawn. That is why applying insect repellent at night and sleeping under a mosquito net is so important if you are in a malaria area.

Less is more For as long as we can remember, the amount of sleep per night recommended for teenagers has been nine hours. But experts have recently looked at this number and decided that top students are operating on about two hours per night less than that. The study took place using 1 724 primary and secondary-school students and it was found that the amount of sleep the students got had a direct effect on their results in a standardised test. The study also showed that the required sleep decreases with age, so while 10-year-olds need nine to nine and a half hours’ sleep, 12-year-olds need eight to eight and a half hours’ sleep, and teenagers between the ages of 16 and 18 need seven hours’ sleep per night.

That’s what friends are for We all want our children to have friends, but did you know that having a best friend could have a positive effect on your child’s mental stability – and not only during childhood, but into adulthood as well. The study, which was recently published in the Journal of Developmental Psychology, found that a child’s feeling of self-worth decreased when he or she got into trouble when alone. However, when children had a best friend with them to weather the storm, the changes in self-worth were less significant. This was monitored by testing their cortisol levels, also known as ‘the stress hormone’, which increased when trouble was on the horizon. According to William Bukowski, the co-author of the study, these experiences in children affect them in later life. He says “Excessive secretion of cortisol can lead to significant physiological changes, including immune suppression and decreased bone formation. Increased stress can really slow down a child’s development.”

No spanking If you think that there’s no harm in giving your child the occasional spank as punishment, a recent study shows that you may be mistaken. Two child development experts in Canada conducted research over a period of two decades. Their findings, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, stated that children who were punished with physical violence were prone to higher levels of aggression towards both their peers and their families and, in later life, towards their spouses as well. In addition to these children showing more aggression than their non-spanked counterparts, the study also showed that they would be more likely to develop other mental problems such as depression and anxiety. Experts suggest that, instead of spanking your children, you punish them in other, non-violent ways, such as time-outs or confiscating their toys.

you and your partner are of different faiths, that compromise is going to be a lot more obvious. So, before you get into the conversation about who is going to convert for whom, be sure about who you are committing to, because there’s no point in upsetting each other if this is just a fling that’s going to be over in a couple of months. Once you are both sure that you are in this for the long haul, then you can start discussing how to make it work.

Don’t hide from the issue

Keeping the faith Being in an interfaith relationship can be difficult. But where there’s a will there’s a way and, if you really want to, you can make it work.

N

o matter who you are in a relationship with, there are bound to be some cultural differences. No two people, unless they are siblings, are brought up exactly the same way, and these differences could develop into problems within your relationship. One of the biggest differences is the issue of faith. When two people of different faiths come together, there are surely going to be some conflicts, even if neither you nor your partner considers yourself particularly religious. But there are ways to deal with this conflict, so don’t allow this potential problem to control your relationship.

Be sure about the commitment Making a commitment to someone you love is always a big step, whether it is getting married, or just making the decision to be in a monogamous relationship. Any relationship requires a fair amount of compromise from both sides, but if C L UB

april 2012

Ignoring the fact that you and your partner are of different faiths isn’t going to make the issue go away. In fact, it will probably just make things worse, because you may unintentionally disrespect each other’s faiths as you haven’t discussed it properly. Talk to each other about your different faiths and discuss how they may affect your relationship in the long run.

Show an interest in your partner’s faith One of the biggest mistakes that people in interfaith relationships make is that they assume their partner will convert. This is a major problem when both parties assume that their faith is more important. Instead of rushing to change your partner’s faith, why not embrace it? Neither of you has to convert, but learn about your partner’s faith, go to his or her place of worship, and then ask him or her to do the same for you. Showing a bit of interest can go a long way when it comes to appreciating your partner.

Don’t go through it alone Don’t wait for the problem to become huge before you seek help. Too many couples do this and the result is often the relationship coming to an end. If you and your partner being of different faiths is an area of conflict in your relationship, even if it’s early on, get the help you need from professionals. This could mean the difference between success and failure.

Famously faithful With all the different religions in the world, interfaith relationships are becoming more and more common – even among celebrties. Here are a few of our favourite famous interfaith couples: David Bowie and Iman: style icon and musical innovator, David Bowie, and his Somali-born supermodel wife, Iman, have been married for 20 years. And despite him being an agnostic and she being Muslim, they have made it work. Amanda Peet and David Benioff: the Quaker actress and Jewish screenwriter were married in 2006. To pay tribute to David’s roots, they tied the knot under a chuppah, which is the arch under which Jewish people are traditionally married. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: even Hollywood’s golden couple, Brangelina, is interfaith. He was brought up Southern Baptist, while she identifies herself as a spiritualist, rather than subscribing to an organised religion.

Easter around the world You are probably used to celebrating Easter a certain way, but wherever you go in the world, people celebrate it differently.

I

ndulging in a decadent meal followed by loads of chocolate Easter eggs, setting up an Easter egg hunt for the kids, or just spending time with your family. These are some of the more common ways to spend the Easter holidays. But these traditions differ significantly from country to country, so we take you on a little trip around the world to see what other people get up to around Easter.

Argentina

Easter is celebrated in the same fashion as many festivals in South America – with a carnival. The carnival, known as El Carnaval del Pais, begins two weeks before Lent, when the algarroba beans are ripe. Homeowners clean and whitewash the walls of their houses and the streets are filled with the sounds of the charango, a lute or ukulele-like stringed musical instrument. The carnival reaches fever-pitch with dancing women and the singing of folk songs, and ends with a rag doll representing Pukllay – the Spirit of the Carnival – being buried. During the Holy Week, the Passion of Christ is re-enacted, and the festivities end with celebrations of the Resurrection.

It is common for Argentineans to take a two-week holiday during these festivities. Zambia In some Christian countries, Easter is one of the most important holidays april 2012

– even more so than Christmas! In Zambia, for example, it is common for like-minded Christians to come together for a camp and celebrate Easter together. Different congregations will join up at one church for three or four days. This is a time for intense worship, Bible studies, devotion and faith-related fun. Everyone brings their camping equipment and they book a small space on the church floor for the weekend. Sometimes people even sleep outside if the church is too full.

Egypt Easter is taken very seriously by Christians in Egypt. Lent in the Coptic Church of Egypt lasts for 55 days, and this includes an extra week of modified fasting before Lent actually begins on Ash Wednesday. It is said that one isn’t allowed to eat meat, fish, eggs or milk during Lent, but as Lent goes on in Egypt, more and more foods are cut out so that by Holy Week people are mainly surviving on vegetables and beans. On Palm Sunday, the church is decorated with palms and flowers, and during Holy Week people go to church every day. On the morning of Easter Sunday, bells are rung to proclaim the Resurrection, and there is a candlelit procession. The rest of the day is spent visiting friends and family, and a special Easter lunch is enjoyed in the afternoon. Easter Monday coincides with an ancient spring festival, so many people spend this day out in their gardens.

In Egypt on Palm Sunday, when the children are at church, they are given palm fronds blessed with holy water, which they take home and keep all year.

Fun Easter Facts

The tradition of giving eggs at Easter time has been traced back to the Persians, Egyptians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans. To them the egg was a symbol of life. Chocolate Easter eggs are one of the most popular Easter treats. But did you know that the first chocolate eggs were made in Europe in the early 1800s? The tradition of painting eggs is called Pysanka, which comes from the Ukrainian word “pysaty”, which means “to write”. You can learn how to do this too in this month’s craft feature on page 44.

To your credit There’s been a lot of debate about whether credit cards are good or bad, but that’s really up to you.

C

redit cards have gotten a bit of a bad reputation over the years. When one first gets a credit card, it feels a bit like free money. So we tend to splurge on items we have always wanted, but have never been able to afford before. But the truth is that this money has to be paid back. And when that bill comes at the end of the month, it often leaves people in a state of shock and desperation, because they haven’t worked paying that money back into their budget.

There are both good and bad sides to having a credit card, and the trick to building a good credit rating is finding a balance. You have to buy on credit to get a credit rating, but you must be careful not to spend money that you don’t have. So, before you apply for a credit card, consider the following, and make sure that you are responsible enough.

more you owe on your credit card, the more you are paying the bank. These charges may seem insignificant, but they build up over time and eventually you will have paid the bank quite a bit.

Not all bad While it’s true that credit cards can tempt people to spend money they don’t have and get themselves into trouble, having a credit card does have its perks, the most important of which is helping your credit rating. Every time you spend money that you haven’t actually earned yet, such as buying furniture or appliances on credit at your favourite store or spending on your credit card, you are improving your credit rating. However, it only works if you actually pay back what you owe on a regular basis. This means that when you want to apply for a large loan, such as a home loan or vehicle finance, you are much more likely to get approval, as you have proven that you are able to pay back money that you owe. But if you don’t pay your store or credit card instalments, you will damage your credit rating, and possibly even get blacklisted. This will make it very difficult to get hold of large sums of money when you need them.

Don’t live in the red What often happens when people get introduced to credit cards is that they max them out and then just put their entire salary back into their credit card and start all over again. This is unwise, because when you go into the overdraft facility on your credit card, it means that you are actually spending the bank’s money, and they charge you for that privilege. The way they charge you is through interest, which is a percentage of what you owe. This means that the C L UB

You must always keep in mind that this money has to be paid back, so don’t get carried away and buy things that you would never be able to afford without a credit card.

Be credit wise

If you have allowed your credit card spending to get out of hand, leave your credit card at home in a safe place so you don’t spend any more on it, and pay the monthly instalments until you are debt-free. Try to keep your credit card in the black – don’t use the overdraft facility. This is handy because the ‘swipe’ charges are less than on a debit card, and you don’t pay interest as you don’t owe the bank anything, and this saves you money. If you are bad at remembering to pay your bills, set up a debit order for your credit card payments. This will prevent you from accumulating late charges, which also saves you money.

According to experts, one of the most effective ways of dealing with stress is meditation. All you need to do is sit in a quiet place, such as your bedroom, and clear your mind. This will give you a sense of calm and control, so the things that are stressing you out become easier to manage. Clearing your mind may seem impossible at first, but practise makes perfect, so try to meditate every day.

Recycling is a great way to help the environment. So, instead of having one big bin in which you put all your waste, have smaller bins or separate bags for glass, recyclable plastic, paper, and tins. (Use “wet” waste from your kitchen, such as vegetable peelings, on your compost heap.) Then, at the end of the week, take your recycling to the closest recycling depot in your area.

If you have a garden, try not to use poisons to kill insects. There are a wide variety of natural remedies you can use as insecticides, such as planting herbs to deter certain insects that don’t like the strong smell. And dishwashing liquid mixed with water in a spray bottle is great for getting rid of aphids, which can easily ruin your beautiful greenery.

Did you know that a dripping tap can waste up to 90 litres of water per day! If any of the taps in your home are dripping, you need to get them fixed immediately. We live in a water-poor country, and this precious resource is getting more and more scarce each year.

oelle has graced many a magazine cover, as well as featuring in some eye-catching fashion shoots and TV adverts. She is also a regular on the ramps at fashion weeks, both locally and internationally. When not dressed in high couture or modelling for leading magazines, Joelle enjoys travelling to places like Switzerland and participating in what she loves best – volunteering. This happy-go-lucky model loves to laugh and doesn’t take herself too seriously. She is one of the contestants on the latest season of Tropika Island of Treasure on e.TV and, when asked what she would do if she won the million, she giggles and comments, “Wow, I’d be one happy girl. I would take some time out to tour Tuscany with a Global Volunteer Network and give some [of the money] to charity.” Tell me a bit about who you are offset and on-set? “On-set, I have a character to portray, and I do my best to respond to all the directions I’m given. Off-set, there are no directions and I have more fun making it up as I go along. This is why I loved filming Tropika Island of Treasure – I was allowed to be me 24/7!” What are your hobbies? “Dancing, painting, reading and music – I play the violin. I also love to paint and dance – salsa – when time permits. And I’m a total bookworm. When I’m not out at work or at castings, I’m usually at home, lost behind a good read.” How do you balance work and home life? “I try not to bring my work home and I try not to drag my personal life to work with me.” In what ways do you think your life would be different if you weren’t in the entertainment industry? “It would be a little tricky to explain to my mom why I wear a 16-inch weave and not a 12-inch one like all my cousins.” [Laughs] Being a model requires a certain amount of gregariousness. Do you find that you have to put on a ‘character’ to fulfil your role as a model, or are you naturally that way inclined? “I am the total opposite of my ‘character’ as a model. I’m an introvert by nature and very private. Compare that to modelling, where you are expected to be an extrovert and to love the spotlight!”

What is the most challenging part about being a model? “Here is something they forget to tell you: if you want to be a model, be prepared to be lonely. Most of the time you travel alone, and because modelling jobs are so unpredictable, finding time to be with my family and loved ones is the most challenging part.” And the most rewarding? “The opportunity to travel, the people you meet, and the lessons you learn. These things are priceless.” Who is your favourite fictional character, and why? “Bella from the Twilight Saga. To have a werewolf and a vampire fighting for you has got to be the best ego boost of this century!” Who is your favourite historical character, and why? “Mother Theresa. History remembers her as someone who lived for others.” How do you relax after a long day at work? “Chocolate. I have a theory: the person who invented chocolate was thinking of me and ways in which to make me happy. Chocolate really makes everything better for me.” [Laughs] What is your favourite way to spend quality time with your family? “I come from a huge family, so a game of Monopoly is our favourite way to get even with each other and laugh out loud.” What’s the first thing you do every morning? “I pray.” And the last thing you do every night? “I pray.” What’s the perfect start to a Sunday morning? “Wake up, pray, grab a cup of coffee, and get back in bed with my book.”

Do you have a favouite room in your house? What is it and why? “My bedroom. Growing up, I shared every inch of the house with my siblings, so my room was the only space that was mine. I’ve kept this kind of personal conduct, where my room is the one place I really escape.”

What item in your house • Catch could you not live without and why? “My bed. I miss it the most when I travel. But I also couldn’t live without my iPod, on e.TV on Sunday because I love music, nights at and my books. I know, 18:30 • I’m a nerd.” If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want with you? “My family photograph, because my family means the world to me. A box of matches or a lighter, because I’m really scared of the dark. And my Bible, because I love to read and the Bible has everything I need to know.”

Tropika Island of Treasure

I have a theory: the person who invented chocolate was thinking of me and ways in which to make me happy. Chocolate really makes everything better for me.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? “South Africa.” Do you have any secret talents that your fans might not know about? “I’m a great cook!” If you could posses any natural gift, what would it be? “I wish I could sing.” What is your dream holiday? “A long weekend in Mykonos” What’s the latest thing you splurged money on? “Beats by Dr Dre headphones.” What is your most treasured possession and why? “My family portrait. It gives me a reason to get up every day and do better than the day before.” Describe yourself in five words. “Fun, loving, generous, loyal (to a fault!) and funny – or so I’ve been told.” Finish the following sentence: A girl can never have enough... “Sleep!” What is your biggest guilty pleasure? “Chocolate, obviously.”

Eggs – as many as you wish to decorate A pin or needle A bowl A plastic container with lid Watercolour paints Paintbrushes A jar of water

Step one Working over your bowl, pierce the top of your egg with your pin or needle. Keep piercing it around the same spot until you have a hole that’s about half a centimetre in diameter. Turn the egg over and repeat on the opposite side of the egg so you have one hole in the bottom and one hole in the top. Now, over your plastic container, gently blow into one of the holes – the egg white and yolk

should come out of the other hole. Repeat until you have as many empty eggs as you desire. When you have finished, place the lid on your plastic container and place the whites and yolks in the fridge for cooking at a later stage.

Try to use the eggs as soon as possible, instead of storing them in the fridge for an extended period of time. Perhaps you can make omelettes for dinner, or bake a cake that requires eggs.

Step three Allow your paints or dyes to dry completely, then you can turn your colourful Easter eggs into whichever decorative arrangement you fancy. Because the eggs already have holes on either side, threading them to make an egg chain is very popular. Or you could get a basket and some straw, and make a colourful egg nest. Place these decorations all around your home to really give it that Easter feel.

Step two Use your watercolours to paint whatever patterns you choose on your eggs. The options here are endless – you can paint stripes, dots, zigzags, or even more intricate

If you watered your colours down too much and your eggs are looking a bit dull, brush them with a bit of olive oil once they are dry. This will help make the colours pop.

By Marissa Meyer Cinder is a gifted mechanic living in New Beijing, but she is also a cyborg. Her stepmother hates her, and blames Cinder for her stepsister’s sudden illness. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, Cinder must uncover secrets about her mysterious past in order to protect Earth’s future. This modern take on Cinderella is lots of fun and a riveting read.

HOMe VIeWING Immortals

Starring: Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke and John Hurt Everybody loves a story about a regular guy who suddenly has the responsibility to save the world thrust upon him. King Hyperion (Rourke) is a ruthless king who is hell-bent on releasing the Titans – a group of evil godlike characters who are capable of destroying humanity. Theseus (Cavill) is a small-town man who loves his mother and has a gift for some serious kung fu moves. He is chosen by the gods to stop King Hyperion from achieving the mass destruction he dreams of. There are a lot of complicated subplots that detract from the fighting and special effects, which is really what the film is all about.

SWeeT SOUNdS On a Mission

Katy B This debut studio album is crammed with dubstep beats that will get your foot tapping and your head bopping. Each track is a multilayered sound explosion that will definitely reward on repeated listening. Katy B has a pleasant voice that complements the dance beats and sound effects. Listening to it from start to finish is a great way to experience the album, but if standout tracks have to be chosen, then “Lights On”, “Perfect Stranger” and “Broken Record” would have to be on the list. It’s great for listening to alone, or popping into the CD player during a party.

Movies Titanic 3D

Release date: 06 April 2012

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Billy Zane We are sure that by now everyone has seen Titanic, but we know that you haven’t seen it like this. And just in case you haven’t seen it at all, here’s a quick breakdown: Jack (DiCaprio) is a poor artist travelling alone. Rose (Winslet) is a wealthy lady sailing to a new life with her mean future husband. Jack is a third-class passenger and Rose is travelling first class, both on the infamous Titanic. Rose, feeling trapped by her situation, escapes an evening of champagne drinking and attempts to throw herself into the icy waters. Jack sees and talks her down off the ledge, and shortly thereafter an iconic romance ensues. This film caused an absolute sensation when it was released 14 years ago, and it’s even more sensational today with the added 3D effects.

Dvds Drive

Hot!

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan and Bryan Cranston Ryan Gosling plays a Hollywood stunt driver who has a real passion and understanding for all types of cars. He leads a quiet life, working in a motor workshop by day, which he subsidises with the occasional stunt-driving stint and underhand business transaction. He unintentionally befriends his neighbour (Mulligan) when her car breaks down and he offers to help. As this relationship develops, her family gets involved and the situation is soon spiralling out of control. Then we learn why this mysterious driver prefers to live a life of solitude. All the performances are fantastic, and the cinematography has a retro look that makes you feel you are watching a film in the 1970s. There are a number of rather violent scenes though, so sensitive viewers be warned..

Real SteEl

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly and Dakota Goyo Set in the near future, blood sport as we know it has been taken over by something out of science fiction – robots fighting each other. Charlie (Jackman) is a washed-up boxer who became a promoter for robot boxing when the game changed, but he never seems to have luck on his side. When he finds out he has a son who wants to get to know him better by coming on a business trip with him, they make a discovery that could change things for Charlie. That discovery is a sparring robot that they christen Adam, and in order to win an upcoming fight, Charlie starts to teach Adam everything he knows about boxing. Despite the fact that it’s about robots, it’s an incredibly heart-warming tale that will undoubtedly bring a tear to your eye.

MOVIES

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint Last year, we may have seen the on-screen conclusion of the Harry Potter series, but the beauty of film is that we can enjoy these stories over and over again. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the fifth instalment, and things are starting to get really scary in the wizarding world. At the end of the fourth instalment, Harry saw He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named rise again, but only a select few believe what he has seen with his own eyes. Once again, it is up to Harry and his band of loyal supporters to try and stop a dark uprising like the one that saw the demise of his parents and gave him that famous scar.

CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation Cancer takes an enormous emotional toll on everyone it touches, but it is possible to survive and actually end up stronger, wiser and more compassionate.

C

HOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA is a national organisation that provides direct, practical help to children with cancer from diagnosis onwards. CHOC aims to alleviate as much distress as possible through various care programmes. The assistance to families includes: Support to the child and parent or caregiver. Providing information and items of immediate practical use to all newly diagnosed families. Support groups to assist with the stress that diagnosis brings. Assistance to the state-funded treatment care centres, such as soft furnishings and medical equipment. Accommodation close to the treatment centres and provision of transport costs. CHOC works in close association with the medical staff at the treatment centres, ensuring that the medical and physical facilities in the centres are of a high standard. Facts on childhood cancer and related life-threatening blood disorders: The incidence of childhood cancer is one in 600 children. It is estimated that in South Africa less than half of the affected children are diagnosed and reach a treatment centre in time. The good news is that, if diagnosed early and treated correctly, the majority of children (between 70 and 85%) can be cured. Childhood cancers require specialist paediatric treatment at a centre with a qualified paediatric oncologist, or where treatment is carried out under the supervision of a paediatric oncologist. In South Africa, these specialist units are linked to the major academic hospitals.
