Japan Tokyo 16th September - 25th September South East Asia: places to visit on my itinerary list Malaysia- Kuala Lumpur Done Langkawi- Malaysia Done Thailand- Koh Phangan Done Singapore Done Australia- Melbourne Done Japan- Tokyo - Doing Back to Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Then back home to London and back to Uni, University of East London. I am travelling on a part-funded travel scholarship from my University Uel, after I wrote a proposal telling them that I would like to travel in South East Asia in the holidays and learn about all the different cultures, see what’s on offer for young people like myself, and create an online blog style mixed media magazine which is PDF printable and downloadable- http://juppieonline.blogspot.com My magazine is called “Juppie” meaning is perhaps an acronym for yuppie, but Juppie is a Japanese slang term - young sophisticated working person. I liked the term and came across it, one late night researching, so it’s what I am calling the mag. Japan for me was the halfway point of my journey, I had been to so many places, seen so much and done so many things. I had a few issues getting out from the airport at Melbourne thanks to the Flight-centre travel agents who messed up my ticket. I had to stay behind an extra day, which wasn’t too bad. So I got on the next flight the next day and arrived at Narita Tokyo in Japan. Japan is another planet! Really super, super cool! The fun starts here… In Japan it was great to meet up with creative students and tutors from UEL’s Knowledge Dock Product design course. I had arranged to join them on the trip. It was quite nice to be part of a timetable and something that was planned out for a change. We had a translator; I was trying to learn Japanese myself, my Anglo-Japanese. Hope you enjoy my Sixth issue - It’s been a long time coming... Zoe Holloway X.

Bizarre Page 6 Japanese are far too cute! I and the others wanted to investigate the dark side. Our findings led us to sex, violence and alcohol - nothing new! The Japanese are addicted to games and love to play on that schoolgirl theme. Some of them even walk their pet cats, and on the whole everyone, even the homeless, is polite and friendly. I was, and still am, amazed at all of the above.

Environment Page 9 They are super-clean. You must learn the language if you want to get anywhere: Watashi Wa Zoe Desu = my name is Zoe Konichiwa = Hello Onigi ouishi masu = nice to meet you Arigato gozaimasu = thank-you very much. Sayounara = goodbye The weather is hot or hot or rainy. There are lots of open spaces, a good subway system. It’s very expensive so rent a bicycle and enjoy the outdoors. There are temples and sento’s (spa’s) and much more.

Japan is the best place I have eaten for the whole of my trip. Ramen noodles soup, with egg and meat, sushi fresh from the fish market, mochi sweets, Yakuza snail treats. Only the select few get to try such delicacies-trust me.

Sumo wrestling & Baseball are the most popular sports in Japan. We got to watch a live Sumo competition in Fukuoka. I then later went to a Dojo, where the Sumo wrestlers train. Look at www.sumo.or.jp for Sumo information. I also managed to catch a baseball game in Ueno Park.

I rented a bicycle which was very cheap. For three days it was like £1.50! We took the bullet train to Nagoya to our trip to the toilet factory-yes Japan is number 1 in the world for its toilet technology (product design) I’ll have you know! Public transport finishes at 12pm! My rental bike saved me! We took the subway a lot, but make sure you check where you’re going as we got lost a few times.
