UNESCOBAMIYAN VALLEY
FORM
ART
The carpet and the act of weaving and creation that it embodies, has been and continues to be an integral practice in Afghanistan and therefore the Bamiyan Valley as well. The greatest aspect of the significance of carpets in Afghanistan is that despite the differences and quarrels between tribes, the woven artwork suspends those tensions for the universal admiration of the beautiful designs no matter whose hands created it. Through analysing the pattern of the carpets a common shape of the octagon is found in afghan carpets. The octagon, disguised in several different ways it has become an aspect that allows one to recognize the carpet to come from Afghanistan. As Bamiyan has suffered through the war and has become a cultural hertiage site through UNESCO this cultural center will allow Bamiyan to reconnect and educate about culture and common pracitices.

?
The USA currently has the highest prison population in the world. With a 67% return rate to prisons, this number is increasing every day. My thesis focused on the Psychological Effects of the Prison Archetype, which analyzed the reasons for the high return rate and the development of mental illness through space. The site for the thesis project is Alameda, CA-neighboring Oakland, one of the most dangerous cities in California. The site is an abandoned Naval Air Station and allows accessibility as well as safety. A suggested social solution to the problem is implementing the “Holland Code within the prison system - a theory of career and vocational choices based upon personality types to allow prisoners to succeed in the outside world.

This will allow the prison system to become a support system and a new beginning for prisoners- focusing in their last stage of their prison term or short term prisoners- and will allow for a lower return rate. Ensuring a prison community, with guards as their role models, will help them reinforce social skills. The emphasis on landscape and the paths gives the prisoner adequate movement and choice of interchangeable routes alongside rehabilitating sights which helps to eliminate repetition.

The concept of the project is a self interpretation of a small campus that frequently interlinks the many schools and clubs on campus. The floors between the two buildings are connected through ramps and catwalks but can also be accessed through stairs and elevators. Moreover, its circular shape was derived of the efficiency and acoustic quality of the main aspect of the building: the theater. This was derived from greek outdoor theater in epadaurus, Greece- The many level differences allow the visitor to experience distinct view points. The building sits on the edge of the street and has an inviting canopy for its entrance.

SITE PLAN
The mission of the Missouri State University’s science department is to provide a location for faculty, students and visiting scientists to conduct research & educational programs. The building is designed to cause the least amount of disturbance to the local vegetation, while maximizing space for an educational and comfortable environment. The concept plays with the words adventurous, happy & hospitable. The different views and ceiling heights show the play with the words, as well as creating an experience of changing light effects while walking through the hallways.

PLAN
The reflection Chapel project provides two spaces for both tourists and residents to remember the tornado tragedy that occurred in Joplin in 2011. The contrasting moods of space allows the memorial to be recognized but also allows for quiet reflection and meditation. It is located on the top of the hill of a park surrounded by tributes and outdoor memorials.

MODEL
By using Rhino and Grasshopper we learned techniques for fabricating models, making use of numerous methods and machinary. These explorations were made using a CNC printer, 3D printer , lazer cutter as well as a desktop printer. Methods include: stacking, using developable surfaces built with flat pieces as tabs. The sectional tool was used to create warpable paper surfaces. It allowed us to learn and discover about different construction methods for building similar structures.

This structure and 3D model is based on the gravity dome that was created through Grasshopper using a Kangaroo plugin. The waffle structure includes fin edges that slide in the lace scapholding. A skin with tabs was created to cover the structure. On the left the finished product is seen, on the right is the 3D model with the initial dome on the bottom , and the created Grasshopper definition shown on the bottom of the page.

Eco Abet is a non-profit architectural organisation that helps communities in Kansas City. For the annual 2013 charrette, projects were given to groups of students, professionals and community members. In the St. Marks cathedral group, we repurposed the basement of the cathedral to function as a youth center including its individual multi-use ramp entrance.

The volunteer tribute was designed and constructed in support of the Joplin Tornado that hit in 2011. The tornado ended up destroying 1/3rd of the city with many parks and 3000 buildings destroyed. In effort to help rebuild the city, my class alongside the Extreme Makeover special edition contributed by building the memorial. The design is based on a rippling wave of four rings representing the four stages of recovery. These are: rescue, recovery, demolition and rebirth. The centerpiece mosaic for the project was my focus. The mosaic was compiled with pieces of debris collected from the broken houses in Joplin. The symbol was inspired from the surviving childen who believed they were protected by butterflies.

The assignment was to recreate plan and elevation drawings of the St.Charles Cathedral (Vienna, Austria) by only using a compass and a straightedge to analyse the proportions of the structure- restraining any forms of measurement to be used. This allowed to learn about precise drawing as well allowing us develop our analysis about proportions.

For the Center of Integrated Diabetes Research (CIDR) the building was split into two zones. One being the laboratory section the other being the administrative / office section.

In the research environment spaces are sectioned out based on their function. This means there are large open plan areas that allow movement room as well as flexibility of the interior and fulfilling the space requirement needs of the equipment necessary. The administrative section hosts several offices aswell as some social areas and meeting rooms. Both these sections are connected with a central core that has also become a major design element of the building. As many hours are spent in this building it was essential to meet lots of natural lighting needs and incorporate landscaping as a rehabilitative element . SITE PLAN

To accommodate this, a central courtyard between the administrative and laboratory section has been added as well as a rooftop garden that will be accessible to the users. It was important to make use of the corporate identity of the HelmholzZentrum München. This was done by using these colours throughout the building in different areas by either emphasising an area or giving another dimension and keep the users alert as well as bring energy in the environment. The project is currently under construction and is expected to be finished in 2017.
