Home Décor Collection Unique Objects
Home Décor Collection Zollanvari’s Home Décor Collection is comprised of mafrash coffers designed to be used as stools, tables and chests. In Iran, woven mafrash are used by nomads as bedding transport bags, storage bags and backrests in their tents. The literal meaning of the word marfrash is sheet or table cloth and the root of the word signifies to spread, to cover, or to furnish. Our mafrash Home Décor objects are created from a combination of old bags woven by Ghashgha’i nomads from southwestern Iran, and new purpose-woven ‘Baluch Soumaks’ and Gabbehs. These weavings combine kilim, soumak and knotted-pile weaving techniques to give a jewel-like multi-textured surface ideal for the three-dimensional objects in this collection. When we first introduced ‘Baluch Soumaks’ to the market it was in collaboration with Baluchi nomads from eastern Iran, but now they are made southeast of Shiraz by Afshar nomads, a tribe of Turkic origin. The old mafrash covers are often discarded bags purchased from nomadic tribes with whom Zollanvari has forged and nurtured extensive personal relationships over the years. They are then restored and ‘recycled’, true to our commitment to sustainability and the preservation of Iran’s rich weaving heritage. The form of the Home Décor mafrash coffers, conceived and designed by Reza Zollanvari, is created from hard foam plastic to keep them light. The stools, tables and chests have old bags or ‘Baluch Soumaks’ on the sides and Gabbeh tops, with leather and/or woven selvedges and trims. There are two types of chests: those with top flaps that open and interior storage space, and those that cannot be opened and are designed to be used as seating or decorative elements. Some of the coffers also have leather ties and straps. They are made by Ghashgha’i nomads and finished by Zollanvari’s production team. A recent innovation is the use of gatchme weaving. This mixed-technique flatweave is used in traditional khorjins (saddle-bags), and its use is further testament to our endeavour in reviving old weaving techniques (some of which are all but extinct). The latest highlights from our Home Décor Collection are presented in this catalogue. All the published designs are copyright registered by Zollanvari International, and are our sole property. sizes and patterns being woven to satisfy the demands of the Western markets. Soon Gabbehs became synonymous with the Zollanvari name and the company’s creative and innovative spirit. Gholam Reza’s second son, Hamid took over the business in Iran. A second centre was built, close to Shiraz which brought together design, dyeing and warehousing under one roof. Washing, finishing, customer services and shipping were then located in a large warehouse in Tehran. The sixth generation of Zollanvaris continues to be active in the family venture in Hamburg, Kapstadt, Wuhan (Hubei, China) and Secaucus (NJ, USA). Zollanvari are the only Iranian handmade carpet manufacturer to be awarded the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Certificate for ‘handwoven carpets (rugs, gabbehs, kilims, and jajims) made from hand-spun sheep wool and traditionally dyed with herbal natural dyes’. On inspection, the stated Zollanvari products were granted a Class ll certificate, affirming that they meet the human-ecological requirements of the standard established for products with direct contact to skin. This is a huge accolade for Zollanvari as decoration/furnishing items are normally granted a Class IV certificate, since the tests for harmful substances are based on the respective purpose of the materials.
