Dear Zonta members and supporters of Zonta, On behalf of Past International President Sonja Hönig Schough and the 2016–2018 Zonta International and Zonta International Foundation Boards, I am pleased to present the 2018 Zonta International and Zonta International Foundation Annual Report for 1 June 2017 to 31 May 2018. Since our founding 99 years ago, Zonta members have worked tirelessly to achieve gender equality for women and girls worldwide. Your generosity, both in time and contributions, has given us the opportunity to lift up women and girls who experience violence, live in unsafe conditions and lack access to quality education, health care and economic opportunities. Today, we report the conclusion of Zonta’s decade-long support of UNFPA’s project to eliminate obstetric fistula in Liberia. Under this program, 1,500 women received surgical treatments, rehabilitation services and/or skills training. Wider advocacy and health education efforts reached hundreds of thousands of people throughout the region and led to a reduction in the number of new fistula cases. I recently met Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah, Liberia’s Minister of Health, at the United Nations General Assembly and was heartened that she recognized Zonta’s steadfast commitment and thanked all Zonta members for their support. To honor Zonta’s multiple efforts to make human rights also women’s rights, the 2018 Zonta International Convention launched a new major initiative in our Centennial Anniversary Biennium: to eliminate one of the most appalling acts of violence against girls—child marriage—in 12 African and Asian countries. We have joined a program that combines efforts by UNICEF, UNFPA and other UN partners, and will support it with the highest sum that Zonta has ever dedicated to a single project in one biennium: US$2 million. This commitment builds on Zonta’s engagement from 2014-2018 to reduce incidents of child marriage in Niger. Going forward, Zonta will do more than merely provide monetary support: At international, country and club levels, we will raise awareness for this crime against girls and advocate to end this violation of human rights. In the 2017–2018 fiscal year, Zonta was also present in Nepal and Madagascar partnering with UN Women and UNICEF USA, respectively. In Nepal, we addressed human trafficking and unsafe foreign labor migration. In Madagascar, with our project we are continuing into the 2018-2020 Biennium, we are working to develop better access to education and to support initiatives that help at risk women and girls envision a better tomorrow. We continued to empower women and girls in the fields of aerospace-applied science and engineering, business and public affairs through our Amelia Earhart Fellowship, Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship and Young Women in Public Affairs Award. We raised a strong voice by delivering statements at the United Nations, participating in relevant discussions at the Council of Europe and carrying out the Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women campaign on six continents. And, we amplified our efforts to promote the Centennial Anniversary Endowment Campaign by inviting all members and friends to consider a gift to the Endowment Fund, which will utilize interest earnings to support our future. Under new and upcoming initiatives for 2019, Zonta will offer a pilot Women in Technology Scholarship program and fund up to 60 one-time Centennial Anniversary Grants for exceptional community service projects undertaken by Zonta clubs and local partners. More on this can be found on www.zonta.org. All this would not be possible without your support. Thank you for your commitment to Zonta International and the Zonta International Foundation. We will make every effort to work with you as we create better opportunities for women and girls. Sincerely,
Susanne von Bassewitz International President 2018–2020

“My life has changed since I returned from the rehabilitation center. In addition to good health, I am now able to earn money for myself. Although I don’t have any child, I am happy that I can have enough money for myself to the extent that I am also able to assist other family members to meet some of their basic needs.” —Mamie Noah, a participant in the Liberia Fistula Project rehabilitation program

As a Mexican citizen, I often find it hard to obtain financial aid for my studies. The Amelia Earhart Fellowship is the perfect source of aid for any woman who has aspirations of studying aerodynamics or any aerodynamics-related field. In this world with few women in positions of power, this fellowship can help water the many seeds of women blooming through their doctoral studies.” —Maria de Lourdes Ramos, 2016 Amelia Earhart Fellow

NIGER “After my participation in the community dialogue on ‘Fundamental Rights of Girls,’ I learned that as a teenager I have the right to education, health, protection (for example, against early marriage and domestic violence). For me, the ILLIMIN is a light for my entire community. I hope that other teenage girls in my community will benefit from the many benefits of this program.” —Nana, 17, participant in the ILLIMIN program to delay early marriage in Niger

“I did not know anything about tailoring before. This is the first time that I operated a machine. I used to be afraid even to talk to strangers, but now, I feel confident. I believe that I can earn a living through my tailoring business. My husband is also very supportive and helps me with calculating the cost of raw materials and setting the price of my products. I would like to thank all of those who have provided the training to returnee women migrant workers like me.”—Basanti, a participant in The Future We Want skills training program in Nepal
“If it hadn’t been for the scholarship, it would be very difficult for me to even dream of getting my master’s degree. The work that Zonta is doing contributes to taking the right step into helping women start out in business and getting the chance to advance in their career or get the education to do what they need to do.” —Chau Nguyen, 2017 Jane M. Thanks to the support of UNICEF and the Ministry of Education, I received school supplies and self-learning documents. We also did a lot of group work in the classes, which helped me a lot, not only to understand the lessons but also to help me reintegrate back into school. Z CLUBS AND GOLDEN Z CLUBS Inspiring girls to impact their own future Eshana Amarasinghe knows that no matter how small an action, the reaction of having a woman feel uplifted is worth all efforts. Amarasinghe, a Colombo Z Club member and past president and director, has seen through her work within her Z club how widespread and debilitating gender-based violence is to women all over the world and knew that she could make a difference. Starting locally, Amarasinghe and her fellow Colombo Z Club members presented a public speaking and effective communication workshop at a local girls’ school, along with seminars to fight the stigma of female cancers and empower women to be informed about myths and early warning signs, and worked on a project in which they collected soft toys and wrote personal messages for Syrian refugee children. These efforts won the club the 2017 Emma L. Conlon Service Award, which is given annually to student clubs whose projects and programs best express the ideals of Zonta International. But the club did not stop there—they brought their passion for change to the global level. Last year, the Colombo Z Club was the only student club to donate money to the Zonta International Strategies to End Violence Against Women program, which supported projects in Niger and Nepal in the 2016-2018 Biennium. Meneka Galgamuwa, president of the Zonta Club of Colombo II in Sri Lanka, which has sponsored the Colombo Z Club since 2011, finds that the most rewarding part about working with this club is the connection to these young adults. “It is imperative we build the younger generation of Zonta ideals and principles,” said Galgamuwa. “We must make young adults aware of social issues pertaining to women and girls, as it will better equip them to face these issues in their adult lives and engage in service projects that impact women.”
“As they are our future, we could inspire the change we want in our future generations.” While the future does belong to our next generations, decision-makers and leaders like Galgamuwa need to prepare the road for success for when they must step down and allow the next group of leaders to take over. “Zonta helps us guide them to be more socially aware and responsible,” she said. “As they are our future, we could inspire the change we want in our future generations.” Amarasinghe also adds that she enjoys being a part of something where students can make a difference now and in the future, where everyone’s efforts and ideas matter. “It’s amazing to work with a group of people with the same inspiration, driven by the same goals,” she said. While Z and Golden Z club members are making a difference in the lives of those they serve, they are also learning valuable skills. “Being president taught me about meticulously planning and executing fundraisers to finance initiatives while having fun with my team as we worked together, striving for a common goal,” Amarasinghe said. “When you go out there and actually accomplish something that you know is priceless in the difference it could make to someone’s life—and seeing the smiles on their faces when you do—the feeling is surreal.”
Sponsoring a Z or Golden Z club is a great opportunity for Zonta clubs to mentor the next generation and guide them in becoming advocates for gender equality. Interested in starting a Z or Golden Z club in your local community? Learn more at www.zonta.org/ZGoldenZClubs.

Lifting up women through the Rose Fund
A.O. OMOTAYO MORGAN Zonta International Centennial Anniversary Committee Member Zonta Club of Ibadan, Nigeria, District 18 I have always been a firm believer in the need to empower women in a world that constantly discriminates against women and girls, giving them “the short end of the stick”—a world in which violence against women takes various forms. So when Zonta came to Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1970 and I was invited to join, I saw this as an opportunity to work with other women to improve the status of women locally and globally. If we are going to lift women up to their rightful place in their communities, especially in developing countries, women who are fortunate to hold their own have to be prepared to help other women through service and advocacy, which is what Zonta is about. Because all of the Zonta programs appeal to me and I hate to see any of them short of funds, I usually support the Rose Fund. This fund gives the Zonta International Foundation Board the free hand to allocate the funds to where they are most needed. This is why it is my favorite fund to support, and I have confidence in the Foundation Board to decide the most judicious way to apply my contribution.

Investing in women and girls’ education to improve their status
DENISE CONROY Zonta Club of Brisbane East Inc, Australia, District 22 At the 2018 Convention, 2010 Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholar Holly Ransom gave an inspiring speech that focused on three aspects of making an important decision: the why, what and how. This resonated with me when reflecting upon my decision to become a regular donor to the Zonta International Foundation’s educational programs. As an educator for more than 30 years, I have seen the difference that educational qualifications can make. The why was easy: All three awards focus on women and girls, so it is an investment in improving their status by increasing their educational pursuits. The what is not what I get from the act of giving, but what the women who receive the awards get. Education of women and girls is fundamental to their progress throughout life; it ensures that they have a qualification that enables them to compete for positions in the workplace. An extension of their qualifications ensures their ongoing competitiveness and helps them overcome any “interruptions” to their career to have a family. How one can make a contribution will vary from person to person, but no matter what the amount, the important thing is to keep doing it. The choice of where you direct your donation is yours to make. The reward is seeing so many women benefiting who would, otherwise, not have had an opportunity that we—as Zontians—can provide.

Empowering women to rise up and inspire others
MARY ANN RUBIS Zonta International Centennial Anniversary Committee Member and Foundation Ambassador Zonta Club of Quaboag Valley, USA, District 1 “People are like plants in the wind: they bow down and rise up again. I found this Madagascan proverb while preparing a Foundation presentation. It reminded me that all of us, at one time or another, have faced and met challenges thanks to help from people who cared. Our donations to the Foundation and our membership in Zonta allow us to help women and girls rise up. As we have learned from project reports, many of these women and girls go on to help others do the same. Empowered, they in turn empower and inspire others.
UNICEF/UNI180128/Matas
As we celebrate our centennial anniversary, we honor our founders and all members, past and present, who strive to create a better, healthier and safer place for women and girls around the world. Zonta is just as relevant today as it was in 1919. By working together and evolving with the times, we will ensure that Zonta continues to empower and honor women.

THE MARY E. JENKINS 1919 SOCIETY
Ensuring Zonta’s future ability to empower women In 1903, at only 24 years old, Mary E. Jenkins became the owner and president of the Syracuse Herald, a powerful position in an almost exclusively male industry. Sixteen years later, she helped found one of the nine original Zonta clubs and became the first president of the Confederation of Zonta Clubs. Mary was a trailblazer in every way. To honor her pioneering spirit, Zonta International Foundation’s planned giving society was established in her name. Like Mary, those who make provisions for Zonta in their estate plans, are dedicated to empowering women. Charitable legacy planning allows you to secure the future of the Zonta International Foundation and support its life-changing programs at the same time that you prepare to provide for your family and achieve your financial goals. Add your name to the growing list of Zontians who have already designated part of their estate to the Zonta International Foundation. Everyone who informs us of their provision of this kind will become a member of the Mary E. Jenkins 1919 Society. Joyce E. Abraham Micki Allen Lynn S. Altemeyer ♦ Virginia Ames♦ Sally S. Securing Zonta’s work with a gift to the Endowment Fund
GLENNE HARDING Centennial Anniversary Endowment Campaign Regional Representative Zonta e-Club of Silicon Valley, USA, District 9 Creating a lasting endowment for the Zonta International Foundation and establishing a permanent financial pillar through the Centennial Anniversary Endowment Campaign is, for me, a way to ensure that the work of empowering women continues—especially during periods of economic downturn when the work is needed most. It will also prevent the possible loss of some of our special programs as time goes on. For me, that is the Amelia Earhart Fellowship; for others it may be the Young Women in Public Affairs Award or something else. For all of us, it will be a legacy. I believe we need to “up our game” so that this organization that has done so much for women (and for us) during the last 100 years will continue to do so. This is a great opportunity for each of us to “put her money where her mouth is” and to show how much we are really committed to the dream of equality for women; there is so much left to do! I hope you will join me in the commitment to believe, invest, and empower with a gift or pledge.

2018 FISC AL YEAR IN REVIEW The Zonta International and the Zonta International Foundation 2018 fiscal year closed on 31 May 2018, marking the end of the 2016-2018 Biennium. Zonta International has a strong financial position with enough assets to cover our obligations and provide for infrastructure and emergencies. The Zonta International Foundation has had positive investment growth. Both received a clean opinion* on the official audit. This reflects the utmost importance we place on safeguarding assets and member trust. Areas of special attention and progress this year: Kept our promise n Ensured 100 percent of donations go directly to our projects and programs. Focused on our mission n Completed 100 percent of contracted project and program funding by the Foundation. ➾Program donations came in just under the goal. ➾The Rose Fund was available to cover the difference. ➾ Funded 120 educational scholarships, fellowships and awards for women and girls in 37 countries. Increased transparency n Aligned reporting in the budget, financial statements, audit, IRS Form 990 and annual report. n Improved reporting criteria to align with requirements for charity rating services. n Retained GuideStar Platinum rating and met all Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance criteria. Expanded our legacy gift program n Raised global awareness with donors for the Centennial Anniversary Endowment Campaign. n Increased Endowment Fund and Amelia Earhart Endowment Fund giving. Implemented cost-saving and efficiency measures n Established a Euro bank account to reduce costs and facilitate speed of transactions. n Implemented an online portal for uploading wire transfer information to improve tracking and accuracy of posting to donor accounts. The 2017–2018 fiscal year ends with an organization that is strong, transparent and focused. A complete 2017–2018 consolidated audit report can be found on foundation.zonta.org. Respectfully submitted, Mari McKenzie 2018–2020 International Treasurer/Secretary Zonta International and Zonta International Foundation *A “clean” or unqualified opinion from the audit firm confirms that the financial statements present a fair and accurate picture of the organization and comply with generally accepted accounting principles in the United States.
