Coming Home: Art and the Great Hunger
Benyounes String Quartet with Lauren O’Neill (harp), Peter McKenna (uilleann pipes) and Ciaran Hanna (concertina)
This concert will feature music by Béla Bartók, including his 2nd String Quartet, and performances of two pieces by Seán Doherty, for string trio and traditional musicians. Seán Doherty’s Fr McCarthy’s Lament and Prof. Boole’s Farewell were commissioned by University College Cork for the National Famine Commemoration in 2018. Each piece is based on a document from the Famine Years to mark the launch of Great Famine Online, a ground-breaking digital project which allows users access to interactive maps which facilitates research into the details of how the famine affected the population of Ireland. Cuidíonn siad le taighde a dhéanamh ar na mionphointí faoin dóigh a chuaigh an Ghorta Mhóir i bhfeidhm ar dhaonra na hÉireann.
