Letter from the Editor

When I was 8-years-old, I wanted to be a vampire slayer. As ridiculous as that sounds, it was very much true and even more embarrassing if you picture me with a leather jacket, my ‘slayer’ imprinted tank top, and a makeshift stake.

I grew up in front of the television screen, hence my need for prescription glasses now, watching shows I should not have been allowed to watch at the age of five. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was my favorite in my elementary years, not to say that it isn’t now, because I am still enamored with everything that the show represented.

I wanted to embody the Buffy character. Regardless of her duty as a slayer, she made time to be herself – she maintained her personality, sanity, and continued to pursue her quick, witty comebacks that were never suppressed in any situation. Buffy was smart, she was brave yet frightened - she did not allow for her fear to be fully expressed or interfere with her work.

My obsession grew enormously.

From ceiling to floor, pictures of the cast members were splattered across my four walls like wildfire. One pack of tape didn’t suffice. Back when Internet was still a budding universe and images were not easily accessible, I had to rip page after page of magazines and started to cut out images of the show. I remember looking up at Sarah Michelle Gellar’s spread in Seventeen, if you don’t remember – she was wearing a

cropped purple top, and I told myself I wanted to be her.

It has now been 15 years since the show premiered in 1997 on what used to be the WB (remember 7th Heaven or Dawson’s Creek, anyone?). March 10th marks the true anniversary of the show, and for kicks, I didn’t even have to Google that little fact. No matter how many times Buffy and her Scooby Gang had to save the world, they did it with humor, with love, and with a little spunk.

People can argue that the show was wildly inappropriate or beyond unrealistic, but in defense of Buffy, I’d have to say otherwise. I learned how to express myself, how to fight for myself, how to collaborate, and strive for goals that are seemingly impractical to the stranger’s eye yet are worth venturing off into.

When the show ended in 2003, it left me in a teary state for months. How was I supposed to live without seeing those vampires dusted rather than sparkled? I was devastated.

Looking back, I realized how much of an impact Joss Whedon’s show had on my life. I was evidently more bold as the years passed. I never backed down from a challenge (even though I knew I would lose), and I especially understood the importance of collaboration.

You cannot live on this planet without comprehending the term unity.

So much of what Zooey stands for is based on the foundation of teamwork.

Our team is compiled of a group of friends who happen to be colleagues, and it surprises so many of those who meet and work with us. There is never a need for impertinent behavior, and we have Kaley Cuoco to support us.

Our cover girl, with her radiant smiles and humor (and also her love for rap music), leaves us with a memory that is sure to keep us jolly for an indefinite period.

Even Cuoco was in disbelief with how the Zooey team works together without quarrels. I am honored that she is helping us premiere our new look.

This is our year, and this is also Kaley’s year. Welcome to 2012.

Illustrations to Treasure success comes from love and imagination

B

efore Nan Lawson became a full-time illustrator and began her successful shop on Etsy.com, she was a simple woman with a “nine to five” office job and plenty of boredom.

“I didn’t actually consider becoming an illustrator until my early twenties when I started drawing as a creative outlet while I worked boring office jobs. Even then I had no aspirations to do it full time,” she says, reflecting on her past career plans. However, she had a gift. A creative gift that she realized at a very young age and that her parents were “very encouraging about.” She decided, a few years ago, to put this talent to use for a little extra cash.

She continued to work full-time, while after work and on weekends she would create her art and manage her Etsy shop. For eight months, until it finally became too much for one person to handle, she was managing to balance her time between both her love for art and creativity, and her chosen career path. It was a big risk to make the decision to quit her steady job and become solely an illustrator.

“That was two years ago and it was the best decision I ever made” she says remembering her transition between careers.

Inspiration comes to everyone in different forms. Some may be inspired by the works of others, while others find inspiration by the natural beauty that surrounds them everyday. Nan finds the inspiration for many of her character pieces in the people she sees everyday around her Los Angeles neighborhood.

In addition to the characters in her life, she is “obsessed with good television, film, and literature. [She loves] to draw the characters that people already know, but in [her] own unique style.” This love for pop culture is displayed throughout her Etsy shop where one could find unique portraits of our favorite wizard trio, Harry, Ron and Hermione, for instance.

Today Lawson’s works have appeared in numerous print magazines and blogs, which alone is an incredible accomplishment.

Add that to illustrating her first book last year and you have an icon for success. “I had no idea what I was doing, and I was still figuring out what my illustration style was, so it was a huge learning experience,” Nan says when discussing her book, what she describes as the highlight of her career thus far.

Nan does not just rely on her Etsy shop to expand her career, she also turns to media outlets, such as social media sites, to get her name out there and connect with her audience and clients. “I use Twitter and Tumblr as ways to promote my work and also as a way for people to get to know me as a person.” Even with this great success she has found within a few short years, Nan Lawson shows no signs of slowing down.

She is currently working on illustrating another book, a children’s book. She is “collaborating with [her] boyfriend Michael who is a writer.” When asked of other plans for the coming year, Lawson tells us, “I will continue to draw what speaks to me, and hopefully those drawings will speak to my audience.”

Taking on such a challenge, as Nan has, is undoubtedly a tough decision when weighing the enormous risk that comes along with a career change. Finding success in that decision is an even greater challenge. As Lawson puts it, “It’s hard to put yourself and work out there knowing some people aren’t going to like it, but I’m one of the lucky ones who receives mostly positive feedback.” And to all those who aspire to follow in the footsteps of this hardworking and incredibly talented artist, Nan Lawson has a word of advice. “Put out work that you are proud of first and foremost,” and also, remember that “success doesn’t come overnight… Draw or create something every day and you’ll only get better at your craft.” - Kayla Aldecoa

“When a six-feet-seven biker man looks at you and says ‘get the cupcakes’ – you get the cupcakes.”

In a recent interview with Amber and Kevin Vander Vilet, this is the type of response that Enjoy Cupcakes has created among its customers since this gourmet cupcake business launched in April 2009. Enjoy Cupcakes is located in the beautiful wine country of Santa Barbara. However, these unique cupcakes aren’t limited to just this one place.

In fact, you may even see Enjoy Cupcake’s vintage aqua and yellow trailer travelling to a wedding, baby shower, bridal shower – and just about any other event you can think of! Maybe even at a Harley convention!

I had the pleasure of talking to the creators of Enjoy Cupcakes; Amber and Kevin, and learned that after moving to

Santa Barbara, they began researching ways to start their own business. After enough web-browsing to drive even a Facebook addict crazy, they were inspired by a woman selling snow-cones from a vintage trailer, and decided they would sell gourmet cupcakes. Although Enjoy Cupcakes has its own trailer for events, it also has its own retail location partnered with a wine company in Santa Barbara. This wine company had been seeking another company to serve food within their venue, and that is how the pairing of wine and cupcakes came to be. This awesome combination gives you the opportunity to stay formal but still party just like a tuxedo T-shirt. Enjoy Cupcakes has gained much popularity for this pairing of delightful sweets and elegant wines.

When Enjoy Cupcakes first launched in April 2009, they sent out a press release to the local newspaper. However, it has been through the power of social media and the countless positive responses from fashion, food and wedding blogs that have greatly contributed to Enjoy Cupcake’s rise in popularity over the years. Of course, the primary reason Enjoy Cupcakes has been written about, admired, and requested by customers in the first place is simply because of the cupcakes! These tasty treats have even touched the hearts of the manliest of men – just like the burly six foot seven biker mentioned earlier.

What makes these cupcakes so unique and enjoyable?

First off, it is the consistent push for diversity and change in the flavors and taste of their cupcakes. If you were hoping for an amazing tasting blueberry banana bacon cupcake creation…your best bet is to wait for Enjoy Cupcakes to create it. There are a total of six flavors of cupcakes on the menu each week. In total, Enjoy Cupcakes has produced 370 different cupcakes flavors and counting! The reason this company has the ability to have so many flavors is that the menu is changed every single week, and there is always at least one new flavor each week. Eggless Tofu Salad Sandwich Ingredients

Directions

18 ounces firm tofu, cubed and steamed - salted to taste

1. Drain and cube tofu. Steam for about 3 - 4 minutes.

2. Toss steamed tofu with all dressing ingredients. Mash cubes of tofu into smaller pieces with fork as you toss.

3. Fold in chopped onion.

4. Place tofu salad in fridge to chill for at least an hour before serving.

5. Scoop chilled tofu salad onto bread for sandwiches.

dressing: 1/2 cup vegan mayo 1/3 cup Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon cayenne powder 1 teaspoon turmeric 1/2 teaspoon black pepper - fine 3 tsp seasoned rice vinegar optional: 1/3 cup nutritional yeast for added cheesy flavor fold in: 1/2 cup chopped sweet onion whole grain sandwich bread

Thick and Creamy Vegan Cole Slaw Ingredients

Directions

veggies: 1 cup shredded carrots 1/3 cup chopped onion 1 small head of green cabbage, chopped

1. Chop your cabbage - remove the hard stem. Dice onion. Place onion, carrots and cabbage in a large mixing bowl.

2. Add all the dressing ingredients to a blender or food processor. Blend on low until creamy. Then drizzle in the oil - while blender is on - very very slowly. Do a taste test and adjust ingredients as desired.

3. Fold the dressing with veggies. Serve immediately for crunchy, soft slaw or allow to chill in the fridge for a more marinated, pickled slaw. Allowing the slaw to set overnight will slightly wilt the cabbage but also intensify the flavors.

creamy slaw dressing: 1 cup silken tofu (about 8 ounces) 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 3/4 cup tahini 2 tablespoon agave syrup 1 tablespoon maple syrup 1 1/2 tablespoon tamari 1/3 cup grape seed oil (or another vegetable oil) 1/2 tsp garlic powder a few dashes cayenne pepper (to taste) salt (to taste)

Creamy Dill Potato Salad Ingredients

Directions

1 lb mini potatoes, halved/quartered 1/2 cup celery, chopped 3/4 cup sweet onion OR scallions, chopped 1 1/2 cups fresh dill, chopped (stems and fronds)

1. Prep all your ingredients. Scrub your potatoes well.

Halve and quarter them. Smaller potato bits will cook faster.

2. Bring salted water to a boil and drop your potatoes.

Cook until tender - do not over cook or you will end up with more of a “mashed” potato salad. Rinse cooked potatoes in ice water to halt cooking.

3. There are two options now. You can chill your cooked potatoes first - then fold your ingredients directly into the potatoes and serve or chill. This prevents the vegan mayo and other creamy ingredients from ‘melting’ into the hot potatoes. The other option is to simply toss all the ingredients into the warm potatoes - and then chill until ready to serve.

4. Chill your salad until ready to be served. Garnish with fresh dill sprigs and a drizzle of good olive oil and fresh black pepper over top.

dressing: 1 tablespoon garlic powder 2 - 3 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 4 tablespoon vegan mayo 2 - 3 tablespoon spicy/Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon cayenne fresh black pepper and sea salt optional: 2 tablespoon EVOO and 1/2 cup nutritional yeast folded into cooked potatoes

Directions

1 pound silken tofu, drained (about one fridge-section package) 2 large ripe bananas 3 - 4 tablespoon peanut butter, chunky/salted 2/3 cup maple syrup 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1. Add all ingredients to blender or food processor.

2. Blend. Taste test. If needed, add salt.

3. Pour into serving dishes or a large bowl. Chill until thick.

4. Serve! (Smaller servings sizes will chill faster)

Take small sections of hair at the Pull hair to one side and separate into crown and back comb to add volume. two equal pieces.

Take a small piece of hair from the back section of one of your two sections, wrapping around and joining with the other section.

Repeat back and forth always with small sections until desired braid length. You will always only have two sections of hair.

Use a clear elastic and use a flexible hold hair spray to keep fly always in place.

Tweeze stray hairs around the eyebrow to ensure a polished look when you are finished.

Apply a powder brow color to the brow sweeping upward from the inside to the outside using a flat angled brush. Use the same brush to apply a little of the wax to set the color and manage any wryly hairs.

Map your brows using the opposite end of your brush by holding it against your nose. Holding it at a 90° angle will illustrate where the brow should start, and holding it at about a 45° angle where the eye opens up should demonstrate where the brow should stop.

Use a brow brush to smooth out the brows, and make sure the color is evenly distributed.

Hello, Paper!

Hello!Lucky is a San Francisc based stationary company with a knack for combining imagination and paper There is something about the synergy between two sisters that creates the perfect spark for a great idea. We saw the light bulbs going off when the Olsen twins founded the Row and when the Mulleavy sisters upstarted Rodarte. For Sabrina and Eunice Moyle, creating Hello!Lucky was no different. Although creative in different ways, the two played off each others strengths when it came to creating their own letterpress studio in the Bay Area. Sabrina offered practicality with her business background, while Eunice used her own art and illustrations as the initial inspiration for Hello!Lucky’s chic and whimsical stationary.

Despite their shared love for creating fun and personalized cards, the two sisters have very distinct styles. Eunice’s designs are described as bohemian and hand-crafted, gravitating towards the category of “boho-ethnic-French.”

Whereas, Sabrina has a style that is more “modern-meetswhimsical,” with inspirations from vintage paint-by-numbers, the 1950s and Jonathan Adler. Somewhere in the middle, the two minds collide and their ideas mesh into a collection of designs that is Hello!Lucky. Always trying to find a balance between vintage and contemporary themes, the Moyles seek out inspiration in every nook and cranny, from the flea markets they scour for rare, vintage finds to the local eateries and architecture they encounter during their travels. Being both married to Brits, Sabrina and Eunice spend a good amount of time flying between the states and London, a city that perfectly embraces the old and the new and inspires them to do the same. This eclectic spirit is visible in their use of retro typography and a palette blend of both soft pastels and saturated hues.

Even more vintage-inspired are the printing presses that print all the designs right in their San Francisco office. The Moyle sisters upkeep this letterpress process (which is rarely used by a majority of stationary businesses today) to produce cards that showcase the beautiful, authentic quality of handmade stationary. It is evident that Sabrina and Eunice put a great amount of heart into their work, and customers appreciate their undying dedication to produce the best. Their clients come far and wide to Hello Lucky for all occasions, ranging from birthdays and holidays to baby showers and, most popularly, weddings. Regardless of the

event, Sabrina and Eunice always have one motto in mind: be creative and make people happy!

Perhaps the greatest inspiration for nurturing the growth of their work is the simple desire to do what they love. Business aside, the Moyle sisters even use these creations for their own everyday events. In the past, they have put together small parties for their close friends and their kids, ranging from a vintage Bingo social to a party based entirely around an Alice in Wonderland theme. However, the two sisters agree that their favorite project was Eunice’s own wedding, inspired by London-based photographer Tim Walker. The event was complete with crepe paper flowers, animal silhouettes for the guests, boutonnières with vintage ribbon and various other handcrafted décor. Although Sabrina and Eunice would both like to throw more intimate, themed gatherings for familiar faces, there is something timeless and classic about being able to make people happy on their special day that continues to keep them excited about what they do.

It was only a matter of time before their dedication finally launched Hello Lucky into the spotlight. Besides their appearance in multiple blogs throughout the UK and the US, Hello!Lucky has also been featured in leading design publications such as InStyle Weddings, Martha Stewart Weddings, Marie Claire and Design*Sponge, just to name a few.

For Sabrina and Eunice, being recognized within the industry felt like a young girl “getting a wink from across the room by some dashing unattainable guy!” Although the Moylers remain wide-eyed and in shock, loyal fans and customers are not in the least bit surprised.

Yet, at the end of the day, their story remains true. Although Hello!Lucky has reached new heights in the number of events they do and the number of features they land, Sabrina and Eunice share that the success of their business is not measured by the fame and the hype. The focus is still on the customers and on the work that is done at the studio.

One thing that has remained consistent despite the many changes over the years is the fun and creative vibe within the studio. Every member of the Hello!Lucky team appreciates creating art simply to make others happy. As the Moyler sisters say, “success is all about finding passionate, talented, like-minded people and letting them do their thing!”

Mercedes Masohn kicking ass in FOX’s new show “The Finder”

FOX’s The Finder: It’s a light procedural that evokes such shows as Magnum PI and Rockford Files. It’s about a man, Walter Sherman (played by Geoff Stults) who has a gift/ curse...the ability to find anything and everything. My role is that of Deputy United States Marshal, Isabel Zambada.

Sherman’s confident, lover, and the one keeping him on the right side of the law.

I should say there are dream directors to work with, fantasy actors to collaborate with and scripts that I can only imagine in my wildest thoughts. Of course as an actor, I’d like to take on challenging roles that require me to push my limits. I’m always impressed with films that create societal impact, some examples that come to mind are Boys Don’t Cry and Precious.

One of my most challenging roles to date must be that of Jenny in Quarantine 2: Terminal. Aside from putting in long hours on set, braving the heat of a Georgian summer and performing my own stunts (there were bruises covering most of my body by the time we wrapped)...I also explored some rather daunting emotions that came about when dealing with loss and fear. That being said, I had an amazing time, it was quite an adventure!

If I weren’t acting...I’d be holed up in a dark dank cellar preaching the importance of hygiene to an army of cockroaches (who would, naturally, be my only friends). What I’m trying to say is that I’d be lost if I wasn’t allowed to act.

It’s the only thing I know. If I had to choose...perhaps I’d be a tiger wrangler (although I’m sure the first time I cuddled the tiger would be my last)...I suppose I could be a king’s food taster to prevent his royalty from being poisoned (It could happen! Don’t judge me.)

I’m definitely a movie buff. I love nothing more than to discover a great film. However, I have to admit that I have a soft spot for the horror genre. There’s something absolutely thrilling about the adrenal rush that comes about when sheer fright takes hold and sleepless nights filled with nightmares ensue. Apparently I’m a masochist...good to know. Having performed in a couple horror films already, I think at this time I’d be happy to try the romcom route.

Hidden talents? I’m impressed with myself for being to breathe and walk at the same time without falling over. So unfortunately I have nothing exciting to add in this arena aside from the ability to fit my fist in my mouth. Literally.

My mother must be so proud. Years of piano lessons, gymnastics and etiquette classes as a youth and all I’m able to do is silence my own sarcastic nature with a literal fist in my vocal chatter box. I can feel my mother cringing.

I absolutely adore fashion. I suppose it’s the most feminine part of my personality. I’m forever waiting for the role that requires me to dress in vintage Chanel or some sort of period garb that involves elegant frocks adorned with antique jewels. I imagine it would help tremendously when getting into character.

Call me greedy but I long to see the world. All of it. I guess my first stop would be New Zealand...I’ve heard it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I’m really excited about The Finder airing this year. I hope audiences will take to it. However, knowing my luck, the Mayans will be right and we’ll all be dead. Awesome.

While news is fed daily, or even to the very microsecond that a world tragedy occurs (ahem - real disasters, not Kim Kardashian’s divorce), through social networks and leading news sources like CNN or the New York Times, bloggers have quickly transformed the way we enjoy reading. This comes especially dear to us when it is regarding individual fashion. Expression has taken a new home, both on paper and Internet pages, which play an important role with the way one forms his or her individuality and identity. For Elsie Larson, success came quickly in due part to her consistent blog posts on all things mod and crafty. This red-headed (dyed) blogger with some Venezuelan roots admires her grandmother Corina who inspires her personal style - “one part vintage and one part messy.”

Her blog ‘A Beautiful Mess’ is generating over four million viewers each month. “The Internet makes it entirely too easy to stay inspired and motivated by the beautiful things that people make and share. I think that being a part of the blogging community keeps me on my toes and being a blogger has helped me to develop my own style and writing voice over the years,” Larson explains. Larson and her sister Emma Chapman run a vintage store called ‘Red Velvet’ and the two are now in the process of writing a book. “We’re spending our days filling pages of notebooks and test shooting ideas right now. I’m loving every moment! Our dream is to develop A Beautiful Mess and Red Velvet into a teaching resource through the blog itself, books and maybe a TV show one of these days.” Fans of Larson’s blog include actresses Bethany Joy Galeotti and even Ginnifer Goodwin. “What can I say, we’re dreamers!”

Four sisters who seek to dominate the world through their fashion line entitled 8000nerves

By Danielle Matlin Zooey Magazine: I’m curious, why is your clothing line called 8000nerves?

Efi Green: It’s actually the number of nerve endings in the clitoris. That’s the biological literal meaning which translates as a reminder to enjoy our lives and that we were born with the intent to do so. We’re always, ‘Enjoy life and be independent, that’s what it means to us.’ We basically try to reach out to women to not be ashamed of their sexuality and to be true to themselves. It’s a discreet message, in a non-vulgar way. We don’t try to represent our sexuality through provocative clothes, but rather an underlying sensual message with a touch of mystery to make people think of its meaning.

ZM: How did you happen to stumble on this fact?

EG: My sister found out at a play called Vagina Monologues, where female celebrities read a script in an intimate setting.

Rue McClanhan read the part with this information when we saw the play. For men it’s 4,000 nerves, so we always talked about if we ever started a men’s clothing line it would be called 4000nerves.

ZM: So you and your sisters are behind this line?

EG: Yes, it’s four girls; two of us partnering up in the business and the other two help out when they’re available. It’s basically my sister Revi and I. We really want to establish it as

a family business, and hopefully everyone will grow from it.

ZM: So growing up, were you and your sisters into fashion?

EG: I mean I was always into 3-D art, I started sewing at age 15. My sister’s been in fashion for like 23 years, she’s a buyer. We always kind of imagined we would do something together. We’re best friends, so it always made sense to do something together and it just worked out that we were all into fashion.

ZM: 8000nerves is about conquering the world and empowering women. Why did you choose fashion to spread this message and not something else?

EG: Well, I was a sculptor before I started getting into fashion, so for me it’s like sculpting with fabric, it’s another medium I can use, so that’s kind of where it ended up. I saw my sister, she was a lot older than me and I admired her. She was doing fashion so it made sense for me to do fashion. I didn’t want to be a struggling artist the rest of my life, so we thought fashion would be a good avenue for us to sort of venture off into.

Unless people start walking around naked, fashion is a major form of self-expression and we want to contribute to as many people as we can through our clothes.

ZM: What inspirations do you draw on when coming up with ideas for your clothing line?

EG: We love vintage clothes, really ornate clothes. I just love ‘30s - ‘60s clothing. I really love the construction details in clothes so a lot of times when I go shopping I look under the dress and inside the garment. A lot of times what inspires me are shapes and things like that because I do come from a sculpture background so that’s sort of what drives me, shapes and things like that. And colors, we love colors. It’s really kind of random depending on our mood and what’s going on in our lives at that moment. We generally like quiet, inspirational soft music, and colors, it’s really random, whatever comes.

ZM: Who’s your biggest inspiration in terms of designers?

EG: My all-time favorite is Betsey Johnson. I’ve been a huge fan of hers since I was a kid, I love her stuff. It’s borderline ‘costume-y’ and I really admire that she’s been able to draw the fine line between super ‘costume-y’ and actually wearable. Some of her stuff is a little too edgy for me; the skulls and things like that I’m not really into, but overall I love her use of colors and how daring she is and I think it’s great. I also love Marc Jacobs I think he’s fabulous; he has that quirky, vintage, vibe that I really admire.

ZM: What has been the biggest challenge in creating your own line?

EG: Well having to maintain a full-time job while doing it is a huge challenge. Everything that we do for 8000nerves is through e-mailing during the day, or waking up at five or six in the morning to catch up on stuff, or doing it at night. It’s been a huge challenge but we’re really hoping we can over-

come this bump in the road and move forward and that it’ll be smooth sailing eventually. It’s been a huge challenge; it’s not just creating the clothes, there’s so much more that goes into it, there’s so many technical details like how the clothes are going to fit and why someone’s going to feel good about wearing them. Also, production and quality control and all of that stuff, we don’t have a full staff, it’s my sister and I running it. It’s a huge challenge but we love challenges so we’re excited to do it and we really keep a positive attitude.

ZM: So when you’re designing what type of client do you guys have in mind? What type of girl is the ideal client? What about her makes you design your clothes in a specific way?

EG: Generally people who are free-spirited and looking for a form of expressing who they are. We like doing things in a light-hearted manner so it’s very quirky and not so serious, almost humorous. We are intrigued by colors and exaggerated features. We try to tone it down a little bit because we know it’s not for everyone but that’s kind of what we keep in mind and we try to make variations of it so it can fit [a large audience].

ZM: Who would be your dream client that would wear your clothes?

EG: Zooey Deschanel. I think she’s beautiful and really has the personality that sort of goes with the colorful clothes that we do.

ZM: What are your ultimate goals for 8000nerves?

EG: To reach out to as many women as possible with the message of self-expression, power within, having fun, and more.

We just want to be able to continue to create and venture off into unknown territory that we’re excited to learn about.

ZM: And what would you say is the most rewarding part of the whole experience?

EG: Just getting closer to having that freedom for self-expression, I do it on a normal day but really, ultimately not having to go and work for someone with a regular 9-to-5 job. We don’t have to settle for just working under someone else’s concept umbrella, we can really do our own thing.

It’s been a huge journey just learning about myself and selfexploration and really finding all the confidence to put myself out there and that on its own is really difficult. For a lot of people it’s really fearful, they don’t want to know what they’re weaknesses are, so you really come to terms with what you’re great at and what you’re not great at and I feel good about that. I feel good about things that I’m really great at and accepting things that I’m not so good at and just feeling confident and free. That’s the whole goal, feeling free and doing things even if we are scared.

ZM: In three words, how would you describe the style of 8000nerves?

EG: Fun, quirky, and vintage-inspired.

ove is easy. Relationships take work. And sometimes, they just aren’t working. Never will.

No matter how deeply you love the guy - to the depths of your soul, with each breath you take, if you could drink him you would, he is still like a drug. You crave him, but he’s killing you. You’re in a bad relationship and that is when it is time to break up. But that’s what can be the most torturous because you are breaking your own heart. It feels like your heart is splitting in two, even though you are the one pulling from the relationship.

Being in a bad relationship can lead to depression, a lifetime of insecurities, unhealthy behaviors and thoughts, and a temporary loss of self. Leaving might make you miss his smile…but really, you miss yours more. It’s time to walk away. Run if you think it’s necessary. Change your number, have his emails forwarded elsewhere, block him on Facebook if you have to. Stop following his tweets. Don’t drive or walk by his house. Cut him out - cold turkey. Eventually your love will fade and you’ll stop thinking about him every minute. Then one day you’ll realize that you didn’t think about him for days, and he will soon fade away.

It’s a little like exercising when you so don’t want to: one more day of exercising is one less day of being overweight, and it is one day closer to reaching your goal.

The same situation applies with separations: one less day of being together, is one more day closer to being happy. Remember this (very true cliché): when one door shuts, another one opens.

How do you know you’re in a bad relationship?

You feel like you’re suffocating.

You feel more lonely when you’re with him, than you do when you’re alone.

He is possessive of you in an unhealthy way.

He doesn’t celebrate your accomplishments, but would rather compete with you instead.

He puts you down when you’re with other people and makes you feel like an idiot.

You’re afraid that he will get mad at you when you talk to or hang out with your friends, so you feel like you have to lie.

He checks your phone because he is convinced that you are cheating - but you aren’t.

He is physically or emotionally abusive.

You don’t like who you are when you’re with him.

You can’t remember the last time you smiled.

5 Steps to Stop Obsessing Over Him 1. Block him on Facebook so he can’t check your wall. But more than that, so you can’t check his.

2. Stop following his tweets. He likely will be targeting some toward you, giving you little jabs by talking about other girls, mentioning some of your favorite things, or discreetly inviting you over just to see if you will fold.

3. Reconnect with your friends and the people who love you in a healthy way.

4. Do something for yourself that makes you feel good every day - be it a refrigerator facial, a tennis ball massage, take a bath, five minutes of yoga, or just paint your nails. Remember how good it feels be happy.

5. Explore a passion that you never had time for because you were too busy wasting your time with him. Take a weekly hip-hop class. Buy a great cook book and create a delish weekly meal for yourself, or with a girlfriend. Buy a one-month yoga class pass (if you buy in bulk, you are more likely to go…even if you’re feeling bummed and not in the mood).

A Humble Abode of Style “I see myself as someone who isn’t contained by traditional norms, and lots of color and light suit my personality,” Kristina Van Dyk, a fashion stylist living in Los Angeles, explains.

Van Dyk, who has styled people like Jessica Stroup (90210), Gillian Jacobs (Community), James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek), and more, has a knack for being chic - that New York vibe blended with some Hollywood sun. Van Dyk attributes her sense of style to her two-year-old self - “That’s when I started dressing myself and was very particular about the dresses and skirts I wore.”

Her home has just about the right taste of that spark Van Dyk has within her. “’My home, like my personal style, is a blend of pieces I’ve picked up at flea markets and vintage stores, mixed with items I’ve purchased retail. I’ve designed my home to be clean and bright, with unexpected elements, just like an outfit I might put together.” She simply describes her humble abode bright, eclectic, and happy.

The plan for my bedroom was to be cozy because it’s where I sleep, yet inspiring because it’s where I begin and end each day.

My wall of Polaroid pictures from various shoots reminds me of what I’ve done, where I’ve been and where I’m headed. I [also] absolutely treasure my vintage polaroid camera collection, specifically the one from the 1960s that my boyfriend had made into a lamp -- it’s beyond incredible.

The pieces I treasure the most are definitely photos of family, friends, and boyfriend – it’s what makes my home…me.

“I am an introvert. An extroverted introvert. But I really am an introvert at heart.” This statement comes from 30-year-old Bethany Joy (once Lenz) Galeotti, the one who arrived to her photo shoot with an infectious smile and her 10-month-old baby girl to complement her effervescent personality. Introvert? We doubt it.

Before she began living vicariously as Haley James Scott on one of television’s most famed dramas - CW’s One Tree Hill, Joy (as she likes to be called) was a professional model. I know this because Joy can act and pose in front of the still camera. A gift that can’t simply be achieved even if one is a professional actress.

We spent the day with Joy, Maria (her daughter), and her mother, and we discovered that Joy is a true gem.

Nearly a decade on One Tree Hill can be closely equated to: “growing up in a very small time, going to the same elementary school, middle school, and high school, graduating and leaving and going off and going to college somewhere or starting a family. It’s exciting, it’s a new chapter that gets to start. It was time for that to happen. It can be hard to say goodbye. It can bittersweet.”

A normal day at her home in Washington is “very fiftieshousewife. Michael goes to work, I stay home and try to keep the house clean - it’s hard with a 10-month old.”

Her fashion style is “vintage eclectic. Most of the time, I like to feel a little quirky. I feel like that’s more my personality. I like to find day dresses from the ‘40s to ‘70s. I like to mix modern elements, too. Ultimately, I will always be wearing something genuinely vintage like from the ‘40s something really old.”

Joy is absolutely hooked on “Mad Men. I have always loved that era.”

Fashion inspiration comes from “women I see on the street in New York. Come to think of it, maybe Sarah Jessica Parker (as Carrie Bradshaw) is my biggest fashion influence. So many women generally fit into one fashion category (i.e. Katie Holmes would fit a ‘classic/chic’ category, Kate Moss fits a ‘grunge/rock’ category, Kate Hudson clearly fits the ‘bohemian’ category). I feel like Carrie broke the mold of fitting into fashion categories. She mixed tomboy with sequins, vintage with modern couture, and pulls off any and every look... Jackie O one day, Janis Joplin the next.”

She is obsessed with “truffle. Truffle salt, truffle apple, truffle on cheesecake. Anything with truffle, I will run you over to get it.”

She quotes, “Coco Chanel said, ‘Always take off the last thing you put on.’ The [idea of] thinking again is something that is important to me. In Greek or Aramaic, the definition of grace is to think again.”

She likes the idea of hipster, but “I don’t want to go fully hipster, otherwise I feel like I’m wearing something that a group of people always wear. I don’t really know anything about hipsters. I always wonder about people who always look like everyone else - a carbon copy. How are you expressing your personality? Then aren’t you just expressing the personality of some movement?”

I

’ve always been curious as to why there is no elementary class on the subject of kindness. The idea of benevolence is one of the most fundamental aspects to treating people fairly and growing up properly. While there may be classroom rules that center around respect, bullying still runs vehemently in many individuals. According to the nationally recognized organization ‘To Write Love on Her Arms,’ about 121 million people suffer from depression worldwide.

Lauren Parsekian and Molly Thompson are two women who seek to educate students on the constant girl-againstgirl crimes that are performed almost unremittingly. They two launched a non-profit organization entitled the ‘Kind Campaign’ in 2009.

Zooey Magazine: Lauren and Molly, can you guys describe for us what the Kind Campaign is all about?

Lauren and Molly: Kind Campaign is a non-profit organization, movement and documentary that brings awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-againstgirl “crime.” We are just two normal girls who wanted to make a difference by creating a kinder community of females. Through our documentary, Finding Kind, our assembly program, our web site’s interactive features and applications, and our newly launched Kind Club Curriculum, we are able to give girls a voice and educate massive

amounts of girls and parents about how to handle and cope with girl-against-girl bullying. The two of us travel with our school program throughout the entire school year. It’s amazing to see how girls connect with us during the assembly. Being young allows students to see us as peers and really opens them up to honest conversation. It’s incredible to be able to let girls know that they are not alone, that they will get through those tough times and that they each have the ability to change the world with their friends.

ZM: There are other anti-bullying movements out there today (Trevor Project, It Gets Better, Love is Louder, etc) but yours specifically seeks to reach girls. What ultimately compelled you to begin this movement?

Lauren: First off, let me just say how thrilled we are to see so many groups and organizations finally taking a stand to bring awareness to this often overlooked social dilemma.

We have had the pleasure of meeting and working with some of the people from various anti-bullying groups and it’s really encouraging to see how passionate people are about making this world a kinder place. Kind Campaign is unique because our program focuses on girl-against-girl ‘crime.’ Girl world can be a very cruel place. It always concerned me to see how uncommon it can be for females to find good friends. There is such a sense of competition built within the female culture, which often results in bro-

ken relationships. It’s something every girl goes through.

I went through a really hard time in middle school with a group of girls. My experience got so severe that in seventh grade, I tried to take my life as a result of the social pressures I faced every day. Ever since that time in my life, I have been deeply passionate about creating a platform for girls to harness their voice and speak out about this unfortunate universal experience. While attending Pepperdine film school, I became inspired by the documentary format and decided that was exactly how I wanted to expose and share this story. I spoke with Molly about this and learned that she also had an experience from high school that really connected her to the documentary. We immediately started shooting local interviews. Seeing how vulnerable and open women and girls were about their experiences inspired us to take it another step further, and that is when Kind Campaign was born. Since September 2009, we have gone on 3 national tours, have spoken in over 350 schools, have screening Finding Kind in hundreds of schools and venues and have reached hundreds of thousands of girls.

ZM: How has the Kind Campaign grown since 2009 when you first started it?

Molly: Wow. From the very beginning, we’ve been running to catch up with the growth of Kind Campaign, which is such a wonderful blessing. Really, we are constantly learning and growing. Since we began we released Finding Kind, traveled on three national tours as well as traveling internationally into Canada, launched Kind Clubs, and re-designed and relaunched our website which is an amazing resource.

Lauren: I am so proud that Kind campaign has now become a movement on the forefront of the bullying issue across our country. When we travel, complete strangers know about the campaign, the work we are doing and the film.

It’s become so much bigger than us.

unexpected moments and strangers that we met on the road trip that added such a unique feel to the film. For me, the most challenging and rewarding part of the filmmaking process was post-production. I worked with Vegard Sorby (We love you Vee!) every day and night for 10 months to get this doc finished by back to school 2010. Going into the edit with almost 200 hours of footage and narrowing that down to 75 minutes was such a fun challenge. I found story boarding and doodling and listening to We Own the Sky by M83 very helpful in trying to figure out exactly the story I wanted to tell.

Molly: It was such an adventure! We started pre-production immediately after graduation from Pepperdine, so I spent that entire summer making cold calls to thousands of schools across the country and to companies to try and find sponsorships to fund the road trip and production. I think it’s a testament to how serious this issue is that schools opened their doors to two young girls that said that they could help. Being on the road and filming was extremely exhausting, but so worth it. Every day we met kind and generous people who shared their stories and words of encouragement, which is one of my favorite parts of the production process.

ZM: How was filming Finding Kind and what would you consider the best part of the whole process to be (from preproduction to filming to post-production)?

Lauren: Filming Finding Kind was truly a life changing experience for me. I am really proud of the fact that I am able to hold a finished DVD of my first attempt at a feature film. Directing, writing, and producing the film was quite a learning process but was such a blast. Waking up on the road each morning and envisioning the shots I wanted to get was such a cool, creative process. There were so many

ZM: How can girls around the country get involved?

Molly: There are so many ways to get involved with Kind Campaign. One of the biggest ways to get involved whether you are a student or a parent is by hosting a screening of Finding Kind, bringing Lauren and me to your area for an assembly, or by starting a Kind Club within your school or community. IndieFlix, Finding Kind’s distribution company, makes this process super easy and you can find all of the information at www.kindcampaign.com and www.findingkind.com.

By spreading Kind Campaign’s message of kindness and hope, this will help others going through their own experiences to know that they are not alone. Another great way to get involved is by taking the Kind Pledge or giving someone a Kind Apology or Kind Card or sharing your story on the Truth Wall and really utilizing all of the interactive features that the website has to offer. Also, by sporting Kind Campaign gear, our T-shirts and wristbands, you are supporting Kind Campaign while spreading the message of KINDness.

ZM: What is Kind Magazine?

Lauren: Kind Magazine is an online publication we cre-

ated that allows women and girls to share their stories with females all over the world. While it’s visually trendy and sleek, the magazine content is relevant, raw, and emotional.

Anyone can submit their story to be reviewed and included in our newest editions of the magazine. All you have to do is email your story tokindmag@kindcampaign.com. All the issues are featured on www.kindcampaign.com. We have found that allowing girls to write about their experiences really creates a lot of healing and understanding.

ZM: How do you utilize social media for your movement?

Molly: This has been a really great learning experience.

When we first started out the world of Twitter was still relatively new, so we’ve been trying to keep up with the trends within social media. But, it’s because of social media that we’ve been able to spread our message on an international level. Through our Facebook and Twitter page, we are able to keep people updated while we are on the road and post videos to YouTube from the film and from our travels. Also, it’s a great way to really plug people into the movement, but also connect them with each other. It’s been really cool to see this community of KIND develop organically through social media. People that we’ve met and become friends with during our travels in different cities have now connected with each other. It’s really amazing to see these girls and women who have never met one another in person, support each other online and refer to each other

as their KIND Family.

ZM: Is there anything you guys hope to accomplish in the near future or for the long run? Maybe another film to track your endeavors?

Lauren: Right now we are continuing to travel all over America with our assembly program and film. We are super excited about our new initiative, Kind Clubs, so we are focusing on getting that implemented into as many schools as possible. We have discussed another documentary, a follow-up to Finding Kind. We are really excited about the potential to share a new story. So much has happened since we finished that film and it would be so great to get behind the camera again.

ZM: What has been the most satisfying part of this whole experience?

Lauren and Molly: Seeing positive change occur within friendships, relationships and schools nationwide. That’s what really keeps us doing what we’re doing. It’s hearing the girls stories when they come up to us following the assemblies and share with us how much the film and the assembly program impacted and changed their lives. It’s seeing girls hand out Kind Apologies to one another and mend friendships right before our eyes. I grew up doing music, but acting is a daily challenge. There is always room for improvement in both music and acting and that is why I love both. I like to be challenged.

Everything about this interview is ironic. An awkward silence fills the space as I sit mere inches away from Chord Overstreet in the narrow stairwell of a stockroom somewhere in the middle of Beverly Hills.

He is wearing sunglasses, but we are indoors. He is dressed to the nines, like a dapper Ken Doll pulled straight from the manufacturing floor, yet the only things separating us from the dumpsters overflowing in the alley are colorless wooden doors and bleachwhite plaster walls. I could feel him looking me dead in the eye, possibly wondering how I was going to break the obdurate silence and get beyond those dark glasses in the 15 minutes I’d been allotted to get to know him.

His personality is arguably the exact opposite of mine; quirky and interesting as his given name suggests, with his biting, cheeky yet endearing sense of humor and seemingly perpetual sang-froid. He hates olives, and has an aversion to heights that isn’t quite as strong as his distaste for ditzy girls.

Aerosmith is his favorite band of all time. He is at ease enough in his own

skin to burst out into song, usually snippets of hip-hop or early ‘90s top 40 hits. He’s got the babe-like good looks and effervescent charm of a true modern “Good Ol’ American Boy”, but there is infinitely more to Overstreet than what superficiality divulges. His taste in music alone is evidence that he has a much older soul than he’s given credit for. “I like Mumford and Sons and John Mayer, [but] I’m a huge fan of the older stuff. Hall & Oates, Creedence Clearwater Revival, James Taylor— it doesn’t really get any better than that.”

Most people instantly recognize him as the infamously pouty lipped transfer student, Sam Evans, on Fox’s immensely popular musical comedydrama series, Glee, a role that thrust Overstreet into the spotlight when his character first appeared in the series’ second season premiere back in 2010.

Despite the show’s success, much of Overstreet’s backstory is shrouded in mystery. “If people ask me [about my background] I’ll tell them. I’m from Nashville. My family is German, Irish, a little bit of Native American. [We’re]

pretty much a mix of many different ethnicities. I came [to Los Angeles] when I was 19. Going from Nashville to LA is like going from a small town in the country where there isn’t much going on, to being [pushed] into the center of everything.”

Less than 3 years ago, Overstreet was virtually unknown, and the amount of acclaim and adoration he’s received in such a short amount of time is unconscionable. “I’ve been blessed to have some success in being able to sing and act and do what I love. I’ve been really fortunate.”

Some might expect that the zeitgeist has gone to his head, but it seems that he knows he’s got a ways to go. He takes pride in being the passionate ingénue that he is. “Acting’s a little new for me. I grew up doing music, but acting is a daily challenge. There’s always room for improvement in both music and acting and that’s why I love both. I like to be challenged.”

Music is deeply rooted in his family’s bloodline. His father, Paul Overstreet, has written songs for some of the biggest names in country WWW.ZOOEYMAGAZINE.COM

music (Alison Krauss, Randy Travis, Kenny Chesney, et al). His brother, Nash Overstreet, is the lead guitarist of Jive Records’ Hot Chelle Rae. Both have had a significant impact on his musical inclination. “My brother has been writing and producing for the last 8-10 years. I first started working with him. My dad’s written music for 30 years, and both of my sisters sing.

It’s something we all do for fun and to relax. Whenever I go back home for the holidays, we always go to the studio to record.”

The 23 year-old has recently written and recorded some music of his own, including the delightfully pop-y single “Beautiful Girl”. “I wrote that with

one of my good friends and we were tossing ideas back and forth. I liked the idea of talking about a girl that you don’t really know. Just seeing somebody and immediately having some sort of connection even though you don’t know each other.”

He is “wanting to create stories based on things [he hasn’t] necessarily experienced” as his foundation when writing songs. Overstreet’s career has seemed to effortlessly fuse his love for both mediums, but to Overstreet acting and music “are two very different things. “Really, there isn’t anything you can’t do with music. It comes from you. It’s your own thing.

If people don’t like it, so be it. You can

create music [that you] keep just for yourself. You can literally create whatever you want and do whatever you want with it. For me that’s the greatest thing about music.”

When asked about his future plans, his response reveals an allegiance to a characteristically Aquarian shock value, “Who knows? I’m going to keep that close to the chest and surprise everybody. If something’s expected, [there’s room for] let-downs.

I don’t want to give away anything. I’d rather there be an element of surprise than predictability.” Trust us, Overstreet. We’ll be waiting patiently. In the meantime, we’ll happily observe your every move.

young the giant: on their way to the grammys

California’s new golden boys Young the Giant embody everything that is cool about their golden state. Their colorful, uplifting, indie alt rock sound invokes long playful summer afternoons and warm endless nights. While their tracks are being played everywhere, their self titled first album is still going strong, and with a fast selling headline tour to boot, its safe to say that Young the Giant are going places. We spoke with drummer, François Comtois about California, cooking, and the communal laundry basket.

You started 2012 with an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel.

That was great! It was our second time on Kimmel so we were a little more prepared. Last time it was a last minute thing, so everyone was a little bit nervous, but this time around we knew what to expect, and I thought it went pretty well.

Are there any other shows or appearances you are looking forward to? Any that you wish you could do?

As far as TV, I think the biggest spot would be SNL! We did Leno, I think we’ve got Fallon coming up...but definitely the one that stands out in my mind is Saturday Night Live, it’s a pretty big deal.

Your tour schedule already lists over 25 sold out shows...

All the time we spent before it helps, working away at it, feeling like everything was coming from everything that we were putting in to it. We did a headline tour last year around the same time, and it was a lot of fun but we were driving ourselves everywhere in the van, it was freezing cold, most of the shows we were playing were to 200 to 500 people. So sometimes when 500 people sells out, you feel really good, you feel like there’s meaning to what you do.

So do you feel you were the image of struggling artists for a while?

For a little bit definitely! It never got to the point where we were seriously deprived or anything, we all come from

families that have been really supportive, so its not like we were ever like, starving. I mean, we lost a little weight because we didn’t get to eat all the time, but we had the money to pay for gas and for food and stuff...it was never really all that bad.

What are your influences? How have they changed over the years? I noticed that Sameer (vocalist) sometimes uses a vintage microphone - is that a conscious decision?

I don’t know if big band is specifically a conscious one, but its definitely an influence. As a group of people we listen to a whole range of stuff. Early on when we first started writing music at 18 or 19 years old, I think we had very specific ideas of how our influences should shape our music, and we didn’t listen to as much music because we didn’t get exposed to as much, but as we’ve progressed, well when your job is to write music, and when you’re surrounded by music all the time, you listen to a bunch of stuff, and you’re gonna want to listen to new things. So

our taste has grown, as has our ability to take those and kind of subconsciously weave them in to our song writing.

Who would you like to play with?

Someone like Coldplay or The Strokes.

I think it would be great to tour with bands that have been so successful. But I get more excited about playing with smaller bands that are in the same spot as us. We had the good fortune of playing with a band called Little Dragon at the IFC House at South By Southwest (Texas music festival) last year...if it ever came to it, it would be awesome to do a few more shows with them.

As a California transplant, I can feel a kind of Californian vibe in your music, does living in California have any influence?

I’m actually a transplant myself, I was born in Montreal, lived in a couple of different places, and I didn’t move to California until I was 15 or 16, so I think whatever I add to the music is my perception of California. At this point I consider it my home, but I don’t think I necessarily have the same view of this place as someone who has lived here their whole life. The other guys have for the most part lived here their whole lives, so when it comes down to their part of the writing process, a lot of that comes from the Californian culture.

You’re signed to Roadrunner Records, a label full of heavier bands [Slipknot, Mastodon and Opeth to name a few] Does that have any effect on you?

You know, that was the exact same sentiment from us when they first approached us. I thought, this label is for heavy metal bands, I was quite in to that when I was 15, but I don’t know if I want to be associated with a label that primarily covers those bands. But we realized that the reason we were drawn to them in the first place was that they were incredibly passionate about working with us. We joined with them before we had even written ‘My Body’, which was our first single, so I think they just kind of trusted that something good would come if they were support-

ive. We’re happy with them, they’re very good about devoting time and energy to us, and I think that just helps, to have a bunch of people who care about whether you succeed or not, and doing their best to help you get to that point.

You guys have all known each other for a long time, and it seems there’s been big interest on the internet over you all sharing clothes - are you really that close?

Haha! I guess it really does happen that we wear each other’s clothes! The same thing happened when I was growing up with my brothers, when I was going to school and I didn’t have any clean shirts, I would just take one of my brothers’. I think that still happens with us, we’re not blood related, but we live together, we do everything together, so we do behave like brothers.

Your tumblr has loads of great photos.

Is art something you guys are interested in? Is blogging and documenting your lives important to you?

I think initially it wasn’t so much something that we were doing because we wanted to do photography or blog, I think it was more a response to a demand that we realized wasn’t being met. You have to be able to give those people that are so supportive,

something. Its just so easy nowadays, you can put something up online and instantly you can have it out for everybody. There’s really no excuses not to keep things coming out, and keep your fans engaged. So I think it kind of stemmed from that, and then as we started doing it, we actually started to really enjoy the photography, and using that platform as a way of getting our ideas, or things that we’re passionate about, out to everyone else.

What do you guys do in your free time?

We’re lucky to have a pool table now, which we never did before! There’s always a pool table in bars and clubs, and we were always just so terrible at it! So we practice, and we’ve found ourselves slightly obsessed with it. We have a little half court basketball thing, so we play some basketball, too. As far as personal endeavours, Jake [guitarist] is an avid surfer, if he doesn’t get to the ocean for a while, you can tell, he gets really jumpy and pissed off! I like to cook a lot, which is something that my mother kind of built in me. When you’re on the road so much, you eat a lot of crappy food, so when we come home, I like to cook. Because we live together, I also end up cooking for everyone else, but it’s good practice!

Your tour is heading to many iconic California cities. Which are you most excited to visit?

Taylor: Eureka. I grew up in LA and have been all over the state except for that area. I’ve always been curious to go there because I’ve heard it’s amazing.

What does “Healthy Geometry” mean and do you think that definition still applies or has changed with the new year?

Taylor: “Healthy Geometry” is a song Cameron wrote about creating new, healthy patterns in your life, and moving forward to create a new path for yourself. Obviously, that’s the theme for the album as a whole. To me, a big part of that is not repeating mistakes over and over again, and learning from your past in order to carve your own future. I don’t think that definition ever changes, because as people we’re constantly fucking up, which

is fine, it’s human. But you have to recognize your past and your failures and everything in between in order to grow. “Healthy Geometry” basically embodies this constantly evolving process that never really ends until you die.

Where will you be touring this year?

Taylor: We’re actually skipping the LA tour, but will be playing in LA in March 9th at the Bootleg Theater. I imagine it will be nice to come back after because it should be freezing at a lot of these cities we’re going to in the Northwest.

What are you working on now?

Cameron: On top of already blasting full speed into LP2 writing, we are gearing up for a small, EP-like release of material we recorded in December. It’s essentially more intimate or acoustic versions of songs from

Healthy Geometry. Hoping to release that right before SXSW. Where would your dream tour take you?

Camera: Probably Australia especially if we had the following there. I’ve heard artists are treated best there.. also Japan and of course the UK. What, if anything, has changed for the band in the last year?

Collin: I feel like most of us have grown as song writers. A lot really hasn’t changed in terms of who we are though, we just want to be the best we can be.

What do you hope to be doing one year from now?

mindy gledhill Tell us a bit about how you started your musical career and what inspirations helped you to persist.

When I was 13-years-old, I think I wrote my first song and it was terrible.

I remember singing it in front of my friends and they hated it and for some reason it lit a fire inside of me to want to keep doing it and that’s when I fell in love with music.

I didn’t have a lot of formal training.

You released a Christmas album last year. Are you currently working on new music for a new album?

No, I just had a baby in August. I’m totally exhausted so I will not be releasing an album this year.

Being an indie artist, what struggles do you normally face without a major record label?

I think that’s the challenge - getting your name out there and getting heard of because there is just so much competition. It’s so easy to become an indie artist these days, but what’s not easy is making a name for yourself and that’s the biggest challenge.

Which artist do you look up to?

I really admire Imogen Heap just because of what she could do. She does so much of her own engineering. Her song writing, her vocals, she does everything, and that’s incred-

ible. She started out as an indie artist.

You’ve found a lot of success with your music and much of your tracks have been used in Hollywood - like on the show Bones.

You have to put yourself out there and attend conferences and workshops where you meet contacts in the industry.

2013 and just enjoy my little guy and taking the time to build relationships with my family and friends because sometimes they suffer and that’s another challenge you face as a indie artist, you just spend so much time with your music and on the road that I just want to spend time with my family this year.

What are your goals and plans for 2012?

I’d like to start writing so that by next year, I could release an album in

It’s quirky, kind of nostalgic, and kind of has this vintage flare.

meiko How would you personally describe your music?

A mix of sweet, quirky, girly music with a little bit of a shit-talking undertone.

What is the response you’ve received from your album so far?

So far, so good! People have heard songs here and there and have had nice things to say. Most notably, while I was recording “I Wonder” (the closing track), Steve Perry from Journey stopped by the studio to say hello. After hearing the song, he couldn’t stop talking about how much he loved it, and how he envisioned it being a big hit! As I started tying up loose ends on the record, selecting songs to include, etc., I couldn’t help but think, “I HAVE to put ‘I Wonder’ on the record! Steve Perry said it was

awesome!” So, I did, and I’m really happy with my decision :) Are there any particular songs you’re most proud of? Or most attached to?

My favorite song on the album is called “Leave The Lights On.” I wrote it with my long-time friend Tony Reyes, and it was one of those written-late-at-night songs that just sort of magically happened. He played me something he was working on and I just started singing along to it.

Boom. “Leave The Lights On” was created and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s been recorded for the album.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I’m inspired by lots of random stuff.

The pain and the soul of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. The imagery of Patty Griffin. The Balls of Lucinda Williams, and the depth of Sade.

If able, who would you like to most work with in the music industry?

I’d love to work with Lil’ Jon at some point. I think he comes up with some pretty amazing beats. And with both of us being from Georgia, I think we would hit it off.

What are your goals for this year?

I want to tour everywhere! Go see new places and get inspired by new experiences and cultures - especially Japan! It’s been a dream of mine for many years, and being part Japanese, it’s on my “bucket list” of things I feel I need to do before I die.

This is the only possible way I can describe Kaley Cuoco. Not Kaley Cuoco in the flesh…but Kaley Cuoco’s voice.

While she sat in her “very girly/no boys allowed” beauty room lined with her marvelous collection of art work (I mean shoes) I sat at my yellow wooden kitchen table in my run down 1920’s Hollywood apartment. Despite being in two different homes, I swear I felt her reach right through her iPhone to give me a “hello” hug. I‘m sure she’s a hugger. It‘s in her voice.

We all know Cuoco for her California girl assets and leading roles on TV legend John Ritter’s 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, the WB’s Charmed, and of course as the genuine, yet dry-humored Penny on CBS’s smash hit: The Big Bang Theory. This young star who claims she “never had a desperate need to be an actress,” has wormed her way into the affections of Big Bang fans everywhere--no matter their IQ. If it weren’t for Penny’s lovable deportment and deliberate blank expressions, TBBT (aka BBT) would lose the relatable respite needed for those of us lacking interest in Star Trek or intellectual physics garble. Penny is the heart of the show--the “everyday girl” who has given nerds across the nation hope.

As I began my phone chat with the host of this year’s People’s Choice Awards, I hoped she would at least share some of Penny’s sincerity. One question of how she spent her rainy morning and I knew there was no need to hope. Sincerity was there. “I’m cooking dinner for my family tonight, so I’ve been running all around the market and getting ready.”

As a longtime resident of L.A., I know how uncommon it is for anyone--especially a young beautiful celebrity--to spend a Saturday evening at home… with her family. Not on a night on the town. Not being seen by paparazzi. Not networking with other famous celebrities. Simply just quality time with the family. I instantly liked this. And her.

Cozy night to stay in. Do you enjoy cooking?

“I’ve actually gotten more into cooking lately. I’m such a homebody. Love love, love my home and love being here, so cooking I’m really enjoying.”

How long have you been in your home?

“A year now. With the help from my designer, I literally created it and designed it from scratch. From the couches to the sconces…my heart and soul is here

and I take a lot of pride in it. Everything has its place and I keep it very pristine.”

Have you always been so clean?

“With my old house I kind of considered myself a hoarder. I’m a total weirdo now. I throw everything away! If I haven’t worn it in the past year it’s getting donated. I have things that still have tags on it, so people are definitely making out with my clothes.

There’s nothing in this house that is not used or worn.”

It’s so funny how we change in that regard. I remember moving out of my parent’s house and never wanting to do “chores” again and now I need everything to be organized to feel sane.

“I don’t think I’ve ever done a chore in my entire life…to be brutally honest. It’s really pathetic. I didn’t have to do chores as a kid because I was working full time. Maybe they were too easy on me or maybe I was spoiled. I’m having life realizations right now. You know what I have been doing which is really disgusting? I’ve been taking it upon myself to clean up my dog’s you know what. It’s awful. I’m out there thinking, ‘Why am I not hiring someone to do this?’”

How many dogs do you have?

“Two. Norman and Shirley. They’re both pit mixes.”

Did you rescue them?

“Yes. I’m all about the adopting and rescuing of dogs and cats. There’s so many homeless animals out there so I don’t understand why people go buy one from pet store or a breeder. I can’t wrap my brain around it. With rescues I also truly feel they know that they’ve been saved and they’re grateful.

They give you this whole other level of love and respect.”

Who was your first rescue?

“Speedy. He’s almost 14 now. He was a dachshund and so funny! My parents still have him. I just love dogs. They don’t judge. They don’t care if you look fat, cute, tired. They love you all the time. I wake up and my dogs are so excited, “Oh, my God! You’re awake! So good to see you! What are we doing today?!” It’s 100% happiness. I would seriously rather have a conversation with my dogs than a human.”

well. Do you still ride after your horse accident in 2010?

“I do. I’ve been riding since I was 14 and I’ll always ride. Keeps me sane. It’s such a beautiful prestigious sport and I love being around the horses. They sense your energy though and if you’re in a bad mood I guarantee you’re going to have a bad ride. They react to you.”

“I had a man fly across country to have dinner with me. We hadn’t been dating very long and he surprised me. Called and said, ‘I’m at your house.’ I raced home and he had all this beautiful Italian food set up. He had to leave the next morning, but he came for one night and it was really sweet.”

“I’m such a homebody.

Love love, love my home and love being here.”

Besides being a horse lover, what kind of kid were you?

“I’ve definitely been kind of scrappy my whole life. I grew up playing sports…I think I was the boy my Dad never had…always playing basketball and tennis and doing whatever I could to be active. I grew up a totally happy kid.”

Sounds like you were close to your Dad growing up. How does he fit into your life as a celebrity?

“My Dad is so adorable. We were at the Lakers game sitting next to Josh Brolin and he would not shut up. Talking to him about every movie Josh has ever done. Poor Josh Brolin! Ever since then I’ve said, ‘You’re not allowed to talk to any celebrities.’

My Dad doesn’t bother anyone. He just embarrasses me which is normal (laughs).”

Do you have any other embarrassing moments?

“Oh, God! This is so awful. I had a blind date, and I got so drunk on the date that when he offered to pay for dinner I for some reason got so offended. I think it was the wine. I was like, ‘Oh, no I can pay’ and he said, ‘No, no I’m going to pay’ and I started crying at the table. Dead serious. Cried on a blind date.

Then couldn’t stop crying. You know when you’re crying so hard that the tears are flowing and you just can’t physically stop? That was embarrassing. Needless to say I never heard or talked to him again.”

Poor guy!

“I know! I guarantee he tells that story to everyone.

Can you imagine? If you’re already thinking girls are freakin’ psycho and you go on a date with this girl and she cries because you offer to pay? Are you kidding? Now my rule of thumb on a date is to not have more than one cocktail. Don’t do it.”

Assuming that’s your worst date, what was your most romantic?

That is sweet! Love is back on The Big Bang Theory. I was thrilled to see Penny and Leonard back together in the 100th episode. Do you feel like you’ve given hope to

nerds everywhere?

“It’s opened up a bunch of doors. We’ve made it cool to be nerdy. The nerd can now get the cute girl.”

You and Johnny Galecki who plays Leonard used to date off set. How are you both able to get along so well?

“It is amazing. We were together for two years and I think we were just lucky that it was a mutual decision. We were able to take the time off that we needed and now we’re the closest of friends and I think it shows on camera. It’s interesting how life imitates art and how you grow and learn from that.

I’m so grateful for my relationship with Johnny. I think it’s made the show so much better and so much deeper because of what we went through together… and it makes it funny.”

You worked with another beloved John in 8 Simple Rules. Any favorite John Ritter memories?

“Just watching John on set. How he was with the crew, with the audience, the way he treated hair and make-up. He was a class act. Also seeing that he never did a scene or take the same way. He would change it up every single time. John was incredible.

There was no one better.”

Who inspires you now?

“Cute gorgeous girls who are laugh out loud funny.

Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy take the cake for me.”

Do you think a Bridesmaids type movie is on the horizon for you?

“I think they’re paving the way for girls like me who are funny and silly.”

Why so watchable? His comedic timing grabs up all your smiles. Schmidt is a complete tool. Always displaying his alabaster chest and acting like a 29-year-old frat boy. gabriel mann His imdb: Nolan Ross on ABC’ Revenge Why so watchable? Revenge is a gripping show and Mann is the kind of actor that you just can’t get enough of. To make a socially awkward and slightly creepy androgynous billionaire plagued with loneliness likeable is quite a feat.

Pick of the Twitter: “After the episode when Tyler takes me hostage and cuts me, Nolan started trending on twitter. It was like this had gone into the realm of the surreal. Why is it that all the sitcom Dads, husbands, and boyfriends of the last 15 years have been portrayed as the ‘clueless doofus?’ While D’Elia still plays with physical humor but rather than being campy and making dumb mistakes that women roll their eyes over, he bases his comedy in reality and holds onto his masculinity. Refreshing change.

Father flows best: “We have an episode where [Whitney] catches me masturbating. I didn’t even really think about it until take night, and then it was, ‘Oh, man, my Mom’s gonna see this.’ They’re cool though…my Dad is a great guy. New Yorker Ashton Holmes demands attention with his portrayal of a poor, ambitious, psychotic homosexual villain posing as a wealthy, considerate and straight hero. He may have been hauled off to the loony bin in episode 11, but can he please escape?

Puckering Pals: “My first on-screen kiss was with Emily Blunt. We did this movie together called Wind Chill where we basically froze to death in a car abandoned on the side of a road. Emily and I were friends, but there was no real physical attraction on either side and I remember after we kissed, I was like ‘Wow that was NICE!’ I looked at her in a different light.

It was a good one. Way to get my cherry popped.”

Survivor Man: “I’m a BIG Survivor fan.

I didn’t get into it until the end of last year when Boston Rob won. My friend had it in her TiVo and we watched the last few episodes of last season and I got so hooked that I went back and watched every Survivor episode ever made. I honestly think I would do really well on that show because I understand strategy being a poker player, I think I’m a pretty likeable person, I’m good at games and I grew up in the country…I can survive on an island for 39 days.”

Break it to me: “When I was a kid I was obsessed with this movie Break In - it was about break dancing. I saw the movie probably 150 times and I studied their moves and thought, ‘I want to do that.’ For a white boy, I have a little bit of rhythm and I incorporated that with the movie and learned how to break dance.

Mama’s Boy: “I grew up with a single Mom. My Dad passed away when I was young and my Mom just sacrificed, worked a lot of overtime and then drove me around more than she should have to make sure I could participate in all the extracurricular activities I wanted to.

She’s a good lady. No one in my family excelled in anything artistic - they were business minded. My Dad was an attorney. My Mom’s a social worker. My grandparents worked in advertising. david hoflin His imdb: Tommy in FOX’s Alcatraz.

Why so watchable? Australian men always seem to encompass rugged charm.

Hoflin is no exception. It gushes out of him. I certainly will have no problem seeing this Aussie talent gracing small screens as prisoner 2002 on J.J.Abram’s new series and he will have no problem luring us into the “serious and incredibly lonely existence” lived by his character in the most frighteningly violent prisons of its time.

Good Scents: “I left Sweden for Australia when I was about five and a half, but went back to Sweden right after I finished Neighbors (Australian drama). The smells are the big things I remember.

When I was walking through one of the old towns in Sweden, I smelled a horse stable and immediately remembered

I had a song and dance number with these guys called the Jiving Vowels who were behind me the entire time with my face on a stick so you could never tell where the Cheshire Cat was. mad hatter took the line. I always wanted to turn to him and say, ‘What the FUCK is wrong with you?!’ I seriously wanted to go all Joe Pesci on him.”

Tooth dismay: “I completely cut out caffeine once I started 2 Broke Girls. My aunt actually has falsies and it may come from diet or it may come from genetics…

Why so watchable? Initially Sgt. Wu was just a cop on Grimm, but Lee’s devotion to adding extra layers to his small role lead the writers to give him more scene time and a character with addiction issues who blurts out inappropriate remarks on a weekly basis. This summer when The Dark Night Rises premieres, so will his star status.

Before Screen Scenes: “I was Bob at Bob’s Big Boy in Ohio. They told me to put this costume on with the checkered pants and the big head, and I had to wave people in. When I got to Los Angeles, I immediately got into the production of Miss Saigon and toured for a year.

My parents said, ‘I’m not going to take you to rehearsals.’ Typical Asian family. They wanted me to be a doctor and I wanted to take dance and singing classes. They wouldn’t take me so I went myself. When I did Pirates of the Caribbean, I took my Dad to the premiere. People were yelling my name and he said, ‘I have chills.’ It made me feel like what my Dad presents to me is not who he really is. I know deep down he feels a lot of pride.”

Finger lickin‘ good: “I love Disneyland! I have a pass and sometimes I’ll go there

just for fried chicken. There’s a place…I don’t know what it’s called but it’s on Main Street on the right hand side, and they have the best fried chicken.”

Lee-formation: “My Dad has given me a lot. He never settled for anything that was less than what he wanted. He’s given me that competitive edge and I always say to actors, ‘I don’t know if we would have gotten to where we are today without having that.’ My Dad showed me how to find that competitive edge in a healthy way and not in a way that is just about beating another guy. It’s not about that. It’s about finding the best you can be within yourself.”

Love how this theatrically trained New Yorker with an almost regal presence is known for being in the hilariously raunchy American Pie movies. The unlikely teenage boy toy of Stifler’s Mom is all grown up in American Reunion out this spring with a Thomas promise that “Finch has been living a life I only dream of.”

Before screen scenes: “When I was ten, I did a lot of off-off Broadway Warhol protégé work. Then I did the Broadway play John Guare wrote after Six Degrees.

It was a big deal…Four Baboons Under the Sun. When it just ended, I was devastated. I’m going to stop seeing those people everyday? The most tragic thing about what we do is you make families and then you say goodbye to them…all the time. You fall in love with people, life

is great and then it just stops. I’m better at it now because you callous a bit and know the sadness is coming.”

At-lant-a glance: “We had filmed the other American Pie movies in L.A., so I was kind of dreading being in Atlanta for three months, but now I love Atlanta. Oh, my God! Grits are amazing! Kawabata Kid: “Since I was 15 I’ve been doing Taekwondo. I’ve always been into martial arts. Right now I’m studying Kawabata. I’m not really good at it, but I’ve been studying it for a year. It’s the most difficult martial art. Growing up I was a huge Bruce Lee and Brandon Lee fan…I would say Brandon was the first person who inspired me to pursue acting since he was able to mesh it with martial arts.”

His Valentine: “We (wife Brandee) were acquaintances in junior high, friends in high school and then happened to go

to the same college and became best friends. We would go on double dates together - I would bring my girlfriend and she would bring her boyfriend, but as soon as we graduated college we started dating. Six years later we got married. In Hollywood you don’t really know what you’re getting yourself into until you’re in it. You’re faced with all these boundary issues. People try to shake things up, but we’ve known each other so long that we’re friends first. We have that core and that makes it much easier.”

Who didn’t fall inlove with Porter as the paralyzed high school football player Jason Street on NBC’s Friday Night Lights? I mean, come on! His kind heart alone was enough to melt over. Once again playing a southern gentleman in Hart of Dixie, this sweet and completely non-cynical sweetie finds himself in the middle of a sticky comedic love triangle. How could he not?

Smarty chance: “I was in college to be a structural engineer. I took all these AP Physics and AP calculus classes in high school. Started college with half a year worth of credits and thought I was go-

ing to become an engineer. Two years in I got my first opportunity to sing full time and realized I could make more money doing that than what either one of my parents were making.”

Drum schtick: “I was the beat boxer-making drum noises with your mouth-in an a cappella group. Lived in Tokyo for a year…won some competitions. I thought music was going to be my life, but I’ve always lived by the mantra ‘Just say yes.’ Live your life in a faith based manner so that when opportunities present themselves you go, ‘Awesome, I’ll do it.’ It took me to many interesting places and ultimately got me here.”

Read it and keep: “I’ve been collecting comics since I was seven. 25 years. I have

To me they’re amazing stories. Another great form of story telling. They’re currently in the guest room closet taking up a lot of space. It’s weird. s The Office Stylist, you can imagine I see my fair share of office spaces, both good and bad. I spend a lot of time profiling different spaces like CanvasPop from the last issue of Zooey to Westside Nannies, which you see here. I was surprised to find that the owner of Westside Nannies handled all of the design, renovation and styling of their Beverly Hills office.

Take a look at where the ladies behind Westside Nannies call their headquarters and “second home.” I have to warn you, my first thought when entering their office was “wow, this is CHIC!”.

Describe your office space to us: The Westside Nannies office is an open space filled with a mixture of modern design, vintage pieces, elegant storage solutions, and a touch of old world charm. The combination of stylish yet functional furniture makes it a place where work takes center stage without making us feel we’re stuck in a traditional “office” – we actually really enjoy spending the bulk of our time here because it is so warm and comfortable.

And as an agency, we wanted to make sure this space made our candidates feel professional and well-represented each time they walk through the door!

Where did the inspiration for your of-

fice space design come from?

Most of my style and design preferences have come from my varied travels and experiences – beautiful boutique hotels like Mollies on Tweed in Auckland New Zealand, vintage furniture shopping in London, beautiful old architecture in Italy, and the modern spaces of Los Angeles have all collided to create a unique aesthetic.

What is your favorite part/design of your office space and why?

We love the vintage French doors that divide the two office spaces. The doors were sourced from an architectural salvage shop in Downtown LA and have been refinished, painted and brought to life – they bring a history and unexpected feeling of comfort to an otherwise modern space. Another favorite piece is the large-scale commissioned artwork by up-and-coming LA artist, Mason McCulley.

Do you feel that having a well designed and inspiring office has changed the way you and your employees work?

Absolutely! We spend more time at the office than we do almost any other place, and because of that, it is vital for it to be a space we enjoy coming to and working in. We have also found that

having a peaceful and uncluttered work environment enables us to be more productive and enhances our creativity.

If you could use one word to describe the feel of the office space, what would it be?

Peaceful.

Tell us about your company and what it means to you to have a well-designed office space.

Westside Nannies is a boutique nanny agency with offices in Beverly Hills and San Francisco that specializes in placing professional and educated nannies with busy LA and SF families. Best known for placing nannies with high profile and celebrity families, the agency has been featured on programs such as Entertainment Tonight, Dr. Phil, and E! News.

In creating an office space, we wanted to intertwine the values and personality of Westside Nannies into each detail, from the paint color to the crown molding and furniture selections. For us, that means being clean, simple, understated, and tasteful. We felt that our office should be a reflection of who we are as individuals and business people as opposed to a cold, empty room with desks and chairs. A well-thought through office space truly has made a difference in the way we work!
