LEADERSHIP

As the President and CEO of Zoo Miami Foundation (ZMF), I am privileged to lead an organization deeply intertwined with the heart and soul of our beloved Zoo Miami. Our role as the non-profit partner of Zoo Miami is pivotal. While Miami-Dade County operates the zoo itself, ZMF operates on a foundation of passionate donors and dedicated supporters. Together, we forge ahead with mission-driven initiatives that enhance the zoo's capabilities and impact.

I am thrilled to share ZMF’s important updates that underscore our commitment to enriching the zoo experience, engaging our community, and advancing wildlife conservation. We have finalized a strategic partnership with Canopy Strategic Partners to enhance visitor experiences and ensure sustainable growth. Additionally, the Dunspaugh Dalton Foundation's generous $500,000 donation to our Connecting for Life campaign will transform our Sumatran Tiger exhibit, while our expanded outreach programs aim to educate and inspire broader audiences in wildlife conservation. These efforts reflect our steadfast dedication to fostering a deeper connection between people and nature.

“With the support of our partners and donors, we are poised to inspire and educate future generations, ensuring a sustainable future for wildlife and our planet."

We are pleased to announce the completion of our Joint Strategic Plan with Zoo Miami and Canopy Strategic Partners, a milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance the beloved zoo experience. This comprehensive plan places paramount importance on our guests, community, animals, and team members alike. Together, we will achieve our objectives through collaboration, individual growth, and the well-being of our dedicated team members. We eagerly anticipate fulfilling the key commitments outlined in this joint strategic endeavor.

The expansion of our outreach programs marks a significant stride forward in our commitment to community engagement and impact. By broadening our reach and deepening our connections, we can enhance the scope and effectiveness of our initiatives, ensuring they resonate meaningfully with diverse audiences. These efforts not only strengthen ties within our community but also empower individuals to actively participate in wildlife conservation and education. Through innovative outreach strategies and inclusive programming, we aim to inspire a greater sense of stewardship and responsibility towards our natural world. This expansion underscores our dedication to fostering lasting relationships and making a positive difference in the lives of people and wildlife alike.

Overall, these achievements reflect Zoo Miami's unwavering dedication to innovation, conservation, and community engagement. With the support of our partners and donors, we are poised to inspire and educate future generations, ensuring a sustainable future for wildlife and our planet. Together, we will continue to lead with passion and purpose.

THE TIGER DINNER

The Tiger Dinner at Zoo Miami on January 28, 2023, was a memorable evening held in front of the tiger exhibit to support a new, expansive Sumatran tiger habitat. Guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres, libations, and Argentine tomahawk steaks from Los Tanitos, along with a cultural performance by Fushu Daiko. Zoo Miami leaders expressed gratitude for the attendees’ commitment and shared updates on the “Connecting for Life” capital campaign, which aims to raise $4 million for the tiger habitat, enhancing the zoo’s conservation, educational offerings, and animal care facilities (Connecting for Life total goal is $43M).

The campaign has already made strides with completed projects like the Conservation Action Center and the Sea Turtle Hospital. Zoo Miami’s educational programs and conservation efforts have impacted over 700,000 individuals annually and continue to support global initiatives, including the James A. Kushlan Wading Bird Fund and the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment.

The evening recognized several distinguished supporters, including:

• Anthony R. Abraham Foundation – represented by Thomas Abraham, who shared his family’s long standing philanthropic contributions to the zoo.

• Cynthia Knight – honored for her lifelong commitment to animals and her significant support of zoo initiatives.

• Shelley Daniel Rutherford – celebrated in her absence for her passion for tigers and lions.

• Alan and Ivette Atkinson – were recognized as longtime zoo members who support the zoo’s mission through leadership and philanthropy.

• Esserman Family – Ron and Charlene were honored as pioneers in Zoo Miami's history. Ron was instrumental in the zoo’s establishment, especially the original tiger habitat, and led restoration efforts after Hurricane Andrew.

Zoo Miami and Zoo Miami Foundation expressed heartfelt thanks for the generous contributions and celebrated the evening with photo opportunities, honoring each supporter’s lasting impact on the zoo and conservation efforts for tigers and wildlife worldwide.

BACK TO THE WILD

One of the greatest rewards that anyone who works with wildlife can receive is to be able to release an animal back to the wild after a successful rescue and rehabilitation.

SLOTH RELEASE GREEN SEA TURTLE RELEASE

In 2023 on a trip to Panama by Ron Magill and Dr. Marisa Bezjian, The Panamerican Conservation Association (APPC), which is supported by the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment provided them with the wonderful opportunity to release a three-toed sloth back to the wild. In a beautiful Panamanian forest, Dr. Bezjian was able to usher the sloth onto a tree, where it slowly and successfully climbed up high to make itself back at home.

The sloth was rescued and successfully rehabilitated by the APPC team, which is where Zoo Miami’s ambassador sloths come from! The organization is Panama’s leader in wildlife rescue, focusing on sloths in particular. They provide long-term care to sick, injured, and orphaned animals in need and promote environmental awareness throughout the community.

On March 29, 2023, Zoo Miami’s Animal Health team successfully released a juvenile green sea turtle back to the wild from Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne. The turtle was brought to Zoo Miami’s Sea Turtle Hospital on March 13th by an FWC officer after being hooked by a recreational fisherman. Upon arrival at the hospital, the hook was removed by Zoo Miami Associate Veterinarian Dr. Marisa Bezjian. Following closer examination, it was found to have two additional hooks lodged in its esophagus, which were also removed. The turtle made a full recovery, which allowed for a successful release!

FY 2023 closed out with a total of 37 sea turtles that were rescued and admitted into Zoo Miami’s Sea Turtle Hospital. Of those, 17 were released into the wild.

Since the Sea Turtle Hospital opened in April 2022, a total of 147 sea turtles have been admitted and 63 have been released into the wild!

SEA TURTLE UPDATES

SEA TURTLE RELEASE LOGGERHEAD CT SCAN

On November 30, 2022, a juvenile hawksbill sea turtle was successfully released back to the wild after being recovered by Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program personnel and rehabilitated at Zoo Miami’s Sea Turtle Hospital.

The endangered turtle arrived at the zoo on November 5th, 2022, after being found tangled in a net and in a lethargic, weak condition. The Animal Health team worked diligently to treat the juvenile and over time, it gained strength and an increased appetite. Once it demonstrated an excellent diving reflex and the ability to maintain good neutral buoyancy, it was cleared for release!

Zoo Miami Sea Turtle Hospital Manager, Rosemary Lucas, transported the turtle to Key West, where she met with Dr. Jennifer Feltner, Florida Keys Refuge Biologist, and then took the hawksbill approximately 4 miles offshore to release it into the ocean.

On Friday, May 12th, 2023 a loggerhead sea turtle undergoing care at Zoo Miami’s Sea Turtle Hospital was taken to advanced veterinary care specialists in Davie, FL, for a CT scan. The turtle had been brought to Zoo Miami on April 27th, 2023 after being found entangled in a buoy line at the Deering Estate, suffering from tumors caused by the fibropapilloma virus. The severity of these tumors can vary, with some causing external growths while others affect vital organs and result in death.

The loggerhead turtle weighed in at over 100 pounds and was estimated to be 15-20 years old. The transport and care were overseen by Zoo Miami Associate Veterinarian Dr. Marisa Bezjian, with assistance from Animal Health Specialist Julie Heyde.

Dr. Luis Camacho, a veterinary internist, conducted the scan and generously provided his time, staff and facility to support the treatment of this endangered turtle.

Since 2016, ZMF and Sofia’s Hope have partnered together to offer Adopt an Animal crates and Family Memberships to local childhood cancer families. Here’s how it works: ZMF provides a special nonprofit rate to Sofia’s Hope who distributes the special packages through their network of local hospitals all throughout the year.

“One of the only places I could take Sofia during her cancer treatment was Zoo Miami. The walkways were wide enough where we could keep our distance from guests, while still enjoying the wonder of the animals.” said Marta Blanco, Sofia’s Hope President & Founder. “Because childhood cancer is very costly for families, visiting the zoo becomes a luxury many can ill-afford. We are so thankful that we work with ZMF to make these treasured moments accessible to childhood cancer families.”

ZMF is proud to work alongside Sofia’s Hope to bring the majesty of Zoo Miami to South Florida childhood cancer families.

BIRTHS AND HATCHLINGS

GIRAFFE

Zoo Miami had more to be grateful for in 2022 with the birth and exhibit debut of its 58th giraffe! The healthy male calf was born on Sunday, November 20. The mother, Mia, was 15 years old and this was her 8th calf. Standing over six feet tall and weighing approximately 200 pounds, the newborn is believed to be one of the largest giraffe calves ever born at Zoo Miami. On November 23, 2022, just in time for Thanksgiving, he made his exhibit debut and received lots of attention from the rest of the herd, with each giraffe taking turns approaching, smelling, and licking him. He was unfazed by the attention, and spent the morning exploring his new home.

Then we welcomed another calf! On December 16, 2022, another healthy male giraffe was born – this time, to eight-year-old mother Zuri. The 59th newborn giraffe stood over five feet tall and weighed 150 pounds. He made his habitat debut on December 19, 2022.

These giraffes are actually halfbrothers, both born to five-year-old Malcolm and they are his fifth and sixth offspring. They can be seen on their habitat in the Africa lobe at Zoo Miami.

NORTH AMERICAN RIVER OTTERS

On February 6, 2023, five-year-old North American river otter, Zinnia, gave birth to three healthy pups at the Florida: Mission Everglades exhibit at Zoo Miami! This is Zinnia’s second litter of babies. After they were born, the pups underwent a quick neonatal exam to determine their genders and heights, as well as an overall physical exam to confirm they are all in good health.

Following a pregnancy of approximately two months, the otter pups, one female and two males, were born in a secluded den, where they were well cared for by their mother. They remained isolated behind the scenes for some time to ensure that Zinnia and her babies had minimal disturbances while they bonded and grew.

Zinnia arrived at Zoo Miami in April 2019 from the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Rhode Island where she was born. The litter’s father is seven-yearold Edison, who arrived to Zoo Miami in October 2016 after being rescued as an orphan and hand-raised by Wild Florida.

MARABOU STORKS

On May 11 & 12, 2022, Zoo Miami welcomed two healthy Marabou stork chicks! They are successfully being raised by their experienced parents, a 31-year-old father and 20-year-old mother. This parenting pair has successfully raised a single chick in 2021 and another in 2022.

The marabou stork is the largest flying stork in the world and is commonly found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It is primarily a scavenger, though it is also known for feeding on smaller reptiles, eggs, and the chicks of other birds. It is often referred to as the “Undertaker bird,” not so much for its habit of feeding on the dead, but more so for its physical resemblance to the “grim reaper” hunched over while wearing a dark cloak with a bald head and long beak!

It is important to remember that these massive birds play a critical role in preventing the spread of disease and helping to keep the world a cleaner place for the rest of us.

RON MAGILL CONSERVATION ENDOWMENT

“Wildlife conservation is much more than simply protecting animals. It is about protecting the quality of life for humans as well. From the insects that pollinate the plants which provide us with our food, to the corals that help filter our oceans and protect our coastlines, to the rainforests that help produce the air that we breathe and the medicines that help cure our illnesses, the future of wildlife and wild places has a direct impact on the future for all of us. By conserving and protecting wildlife, we are indeed conserving and protecting ourselves.”

The mission of the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment is to provide support for in-situ conservation projects, the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife, scholarships for wildlife conservation-based career paths, and programming designed to educate and inspire the public about the beauty and diversity of our natural world. To date, the endowment has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of this mission with nearly $100,000 granted in 2023 alone.

Among dozens of beneficiaries of the endowment, some of this year’s grant recipients included the Institute for the Conservation of Neotropical Carnivores in support of its project to study and protect jaguars in the Atlantic forests of Brazil. A grant was also provided to the Anteaters and Highways project in the Brazilian Pantanal to purchase radio collars for the study of giant anteaters. The endowment was proud to provide funding to support a study in Mexico of a unique horned lizard that hadn’t been seen in decades until it was rediscovered by members of Zoo Miami staff. Closer to home, funding was provided to the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation in support of creating and preserving a critical wildlife corridor throughout the state. This corridor is critical to maintaining healthy populations of Florida’s unique wildlife including panthers and bears. In addition, funding was provided to Pelican Harbor Seabird Station and Wildlife Rescue of Dade County in support of their admirable efforts to rescue, rehabilitate, and release the native wildlife of South Florida.

In direct support of present and future conservationists, a $5,000 “Ron Magill Conservation Scholarship” was awarded to a graduate student at the University of Florida’s Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, as well as thousands of dollars more that were presented as “Ron Magill Conservation Awards” to field researchers working on conservation projects in Tropical America and the Caribbean, through the Zoo Conservation Outreach Group and the Florida Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

CONSERVATION AND RESEARCH

Wildlife conservation is the core of our mission. In 2023, Zoo Miami staff was involved in conserving wildlife and engaging communities from the far corners of the world to our own backyards. From the mountainous rainforests in the Huon Peninsula of Papua New Guinea working with Matchie’s tree kangaroo and testing water quality for the local community, to the Sonora region of Mexico rediscovering the rare Ditmar’s horned lizard that had thought to have been lost to the world, to rescuing, raising and releasing thousands of imperiled butterflies right here in Miami. We are preserving the world’s biodiversity through our efforts on all creatures, big and small.

All of our programs are because of visitors like you who help fund these initiatives by just purchasing a ticket to come to the zoo. Not only are we in the field but we annually provide support and small grants to NGOs doing amazing work in the wild with many of the same species that reside here at Zoo Miami. In 2023, over $580,000 went toward 59 different field conservation initiatives and over $150,000 went towards 11 research projects focused on the recovery of imperiled species.

The Miami Tiger Beetle program won the 2023 FWC Collaborative Conservation Award presented by the Florida Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The
Tiffany Moore, Conservation and Research Specialist at Zoo Miami.

Zoo Miami Foundation is deeply grateful to the individuals, corporate, and foundation donors who generously support our mission. We applaud the dedication and patronage of our donors, members, and partners who have invested in one of our community’s shining assets.

Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park

Making Wildlife YOUR LEGACY. OUR FUTURE.

Zoo Miami Foundation (ZMF) offers valuable resources to help you, our esteemed community, as you plan your personal legacy. On our website, you may download a free personal estate planning guide to help get your documents organized. You may also choose to create a free legal will through the online tool, LifeLegacy. It’s easier than ever to protect those you most cherish.

Josephine Wolf Legacy Society members, those who have included a legacy gift to Zoo Miami Foundation in their estate plans, ensure that Zoo Miami will have a vibrant zoo for generations to come, just like our President & CEO Jose Romano.

“It is important to step back and invest in the things that are meaningful to you. Leaving a legacy at Zoo Miami of educating the public about conservation efforts right here in our backyard, in the state I love, while instilling a sense of responsibility in my children, has been an absolute blessing.”

- Jose Romano, Josephine Wolf Legacy Society Member, and ZMF President & CEO

Such gifts provide critical support, $12 million and growing, making certain that our mission to protect wildlife, globally and in our own backyard, while inspiring the conservationists of tomorrow, is achieved. This legacy circle reflects champions of wildlife and is recognized throughout the year.
