Unatoč moru nalik na zrcalo i ne baš obećavajućoj prognozi, Regatni odbor poslao je na more 118 posada na navigacijsku regatu. Kurs od oko 100 nautičkih milja startao je u Creskom zaljevu. Dalje je kurs išao oko Galijole, Unija, do najjužnije točke Suska, pa ponovno natrag na sjever do uvale Martinšćica, gdje je bila i prva prolazna točka. Nešto prije ponoći prve dvije jedrilice bile su oko sjeverne punte Lošinja, Wild Joe i Aniene 1er Classe, Martinšćica je bila još daleko ispred njih, vladala je „olujna bonaca“ kako je slikovito opisao stanje na moru Bojan Gale, predsjednik Regatnog odbora. U tom trenutku Gale još nije mogao reći hoće li skratiti regatu na prolaznoj točki ili ne. Direktor regate Zoran Grubiša uoči starta navigacije predvidio je dugu noć. - Ovo će biti jako interesantna navigacija za sve posade, jer na ruti je jako puno otoka i otočića koje treba obići, dobro protumačiti lokalne refuliće na svim obilaznim točkama. Ako vjetar bude ostao lagani, biti će to jedna duga noć za poneke posade, a nagraditi će one koji budu bili koncentrirani i strpljivi, rekao je Grubiša. Navigacijska regata na ORC prvenstvima sastoji se od dvije regate: duža navigacija u kojoj se uzima sveukupno vrijeme koje je potrebno da se odjedri kompletan kurs, te ona kraća gdje se uzima prolazno vrijeme na otprilike pola puta. Svakoj regati se pridodaje koeficijent od 1,5 i te se regate ne mogu odbaciti kao najslabiji rezultat. Marina Kaštela, hrvatska jedrilica Grand Soleil 56R koja je pobjedila prvo i jedino štap jedrenje u velikoj grupi s kormilarom Matom Arapovom, mogao bi biti jedan od favorita, imaju prednost s lokalnim uvjetima i brzinom po laganom vjetru. Ali i dva TP52 u klasi, talijanski Aniene 1er Classe i austrijska Aquila Felixa Riedla, kao i trećeplasirani iz prvog jedrenja GP42 Airis, vlasnika Roberta Montija sa kormilarom Cesarem Bressanijem, mogli bi imati točnu kombinaciju u takvim uvjetima - lagani brod i dovoljno veliku površinu jedara potrebnu da po laganom vjetru dovoljno pobjegnu svojim sporijim konkurentima.
Despite glassy morning conditions and a weak forecast, race managers have today sent the fleet of 118 teams off on the long and middle offshore race at the 2011 ORCi World Championship. The course of approximately 100 miles in total length started in the mouth of the bay just west of the town of Cres, continuing to lighthouse Galijola, island Unije and the southern point the Susak Island, then to a rounding mark 25 miles north in Martinscica bay. Around midnight the first two boats were close to the northern end of Losinj: Wild Joe and Aniene. Martinscica bay was still long way to go at midnight, as roaring light winds were blowing, said Bojan Gale, the president of the race committee. At this point Gale did not know yet if he will shorten the race at the gate or not. - This will be an interesting navigational course for the teams, said event director Zoran Grubisa, as there are many islands and rocks to get around, and local wind conditions to understand at many points on the course. And if the wind remains this light, it could be a long night for some teams and reward those who can stay focused. The long distance race in ORC championships consists of two races: a long race scored on the time taken to complete the entire course, and a middle-distance race scored on the time taken at a scoring gate placed halfway into the course. Each is given a scoring coefficient of 1.5, and is not discardable in the overall scores for the event. Yesterday’s Class A winner, the Croatia-based Grand Soleil 56R Marina Kastela skippered by Mate Arapov, may be a favorite to win given the team’s familiarity with the local conditions and the design’s prowess in light air. But the two TP52’s in the class, Action Team’s TP52 Aniene 1er Classe from Italy and Felix Reidl’s Austrian-based Aquila, as well as yesterday’s 3rd-placed GP42 Airis owned by Roberto Monti and skippered by Cesare Bressan, may have the right combination of light weight and generous sail area needed in the light air to out-pace the generous time allowances owed their slower rivals.
