The design focuses on the exhibition and the relationship between the building and the surrounding site. It is hoped to harmonize the natural tranquility of Fangta Park with the vitality and bustle of the city, and at the same time provide a rich and accurate exhibition space. The initial design starts from the site, combined with the site feeling found that the west side of the red line is controlled by the Fanta Garden and the rift valley road, the rift valley road atmosphere of the extension of a strong sense of solemnity, the east side is facing the city, more lively, suitable for a more open and lively urban space, the shape of the general plane is the result of the extrusion of the interface between the two sides. The shape of the general plan is the result of the extrusion of the two interfaces, and emphasizes the double-sidedness through the different architectural languages of the two interfaces: the complete curved wall and natural landscape on the west side form the complete square tower garden interface and natural plaza, which emphasizes its naturalness, while the east side shapes the urban interface and plaza with the broken interface and the half-open space, which emphasizes its urbanity. The orthogonal site shaping method collides with the original curved wall to further subdivide the urban interface, compress the spatial scale, and emphasize the main concept.

BIG ROOF

Steel Girder

Residential buildings to the east and north, adjacent to Fanta Park to the west and south

The site has two main entrances in two directions. Press the site into two directions and naturally form two entrance spaces and two interfaces.

The form rises to become the building volume, matching the floor area and function required by the mission statement to be adjusted.

The two large roofs extend downward, emphasizing the two interfaces. At the same time, the ‘Big Roof’ also honors the memory of Feng Jizhong.

The form of the building is once again squeezed by one of the retained buildings on the original site, creating two new interfaces.

Shaping two contrasting interfaces and spaces through the material and morphological fragmentation and integrity of the interface.

The exterior of the building forms a complete outdoor-semi-outdoor pop-up. It is possible to visit the preserved buildings, see the Fanta Garden from a distance, sit and relax, and connect the city directly to the Pagoda Square Garden.

Complete site design, refinement of the two plazas, re-emphasizing the differences between the two interfaces, creating different spatial atmospheres.

SITE PLAN

OLD-NEW, MEMORIAL-SECULAR: A IN-BETWEEN MUSEUM

COMPLETE - SHATTERED: BI-INTERFACES

In memory of FENG : As a memorial museum, we should show our respect. So, What is his spirit? He emphasizes chinese roof and structure, which occured in his own design over and over again. Also, he inherited curving wall from Chinese Garden. Those mentioned above are elements he flavored and researched. In my work, I adopt big roof (obviously, cubic form is not FENG’s taste), although a little bit traditional. Under a dialogue with site’s context, however, it is not strange at all for being co-existing with surroundings in a big chinese garden. Too modern is dangerous.

DESIGN ANALYSIS

// SECTION

After the site strategy, our concept went through five adjustments. In the end, we chose to use staggered height panels to form a horizontal spatial extension, so that the public space is continuous in the plane section. Because of the difference in the height of the two bridges, we shaped the flow of a step-bystep drop, and used this drop to interact with the whole site.

DESIGN

// FIRST FLOOR PLAN

The site design was simple, with three adjacent plazas made at ground level. An inner square was given to the outside of the silo and an outer square was left for the public runway, facing the water feature and the tower. A sunken plaza is placed in the center, reserved for the stagecoach station, with tea rooms and reading rooms on both sides to support the area. At the same time, this square can also be used as a space for these functions to be placed outside, with a certain amount of popularity.
