THE HISTORY OF ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INC. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded January 16, 1920 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. as the sister organization to Phi Beta Sigma, Fraternity, Inc. by five co-eds, Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. These women dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for Black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. The trail blazed by the founders has been traversed by thousands of women dedicated to the emulation of the objectives and ideals of the Sorority. The Sorority was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948); to form adult auxiliary group the Amicae and youth auxiliary groups; to be constitutionally bound to a brother organization, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and to establish a National Headquarter with paid staff in Washington, D.C. Zeta’s national and local programs include endowment of its National Educational Foundation; community outreach services; and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliary groups have given un-totaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change. THE HISTORY OF THE AMICAE AUXILIARY Early in 1940, graduate chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority had begun to realize the importance of the prestige, good will, and cooperation of women who for any Greek-lettered organization. In 1948, with the recommendation of the Grand President, Lullelia Harrison, Zeta graduate chapters were allowed to organize auxiliaries that would be known as Zeta Amicae. These groups render valuable services to the sorority and their respective communities. These groups are located in areas where are active chapters of Zeta.
THE HISTORY OF THE YOUTH AUXILIARY The first clubs were formed in the 1950’s under the names of Zetalites, Amicettes and Archonettes. These clubs were composed of young ladies between the ages of 9 & 18 who were matriculating in junior and senior high school. In July 1994 at the 74th Boule’, the national body officially adopted the Pearlettes as a national youth auxiliary of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. In January 1996, the age range was extended to age 8, instead of 7; in order to get a smooth transition from Pearlette to Amicette. These clubs are sponsored by various chapters of the Sorority. Programs were developed, guidelines established and they are viable links to the Sorority.
THE UNCONQUERABLE SOUTH CENTRAL REGION In the mid 1930s, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated created additional geographical regions. Initially, Central and South Central were two different regions. The Central Region soon became the South Central Region comprised of Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. The regional directors for the South Central Region were: 1. Fannie Clay, Knoxville, TN 10. Henri Etta Lowe, Itta Bena, MS 2. Almeda Ford Drewery, Knoxville, TN 11. Bonita Gillespie, Knoxville, TN 3. Carlotta Stewart Watson, Memphis, TN 12. About Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated Signature Programs Z-HOPE – Zetas Helping Other People Excel From the Sorority’s inception, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has long demonstrated an interest in serving the needs of the community. Spanning the Sorority’s nearly thirtyyear partnership with the March of Dimes to its relationship with the Human Genome Project, Zeta Phi Beta has been at the forefront of anticipating the ever-changing needs of society. It is within this framework that 22nd International Grand Basileus Barbara C. Moore proudly introduced the new International Service Initiative for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.: Z-HOPE: Zetas Helping Other People Excel. “Since 1920, our national service programs have evolved to meet the critical societal needs of the time,” said Past Grand Basileus Moore. “This administration has identified some key areas of concern as part of our programmatic thrust, and all of our efforts will be consolidated under the banner of Z-HOPE.”
Stork’s Nest Since 1972, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority has enjoyed a partnership with the March of Dimes In an effort to encourage women to seek prenatal care within the first trimester of pregnancy, thereby increasing the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality. Nationwide, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. sponsors over 175 Stork’s Nests. Last year, the Stork’s Nest program served over 28,000 women.
The Stork’s Nest Program is designed to promote prenatal care participation and healthy behaviors during the pregnancy through two components – incentives and education. Stork’s Nest clients “earn” points toward incentives, such as maternity or baby care items, through a variety of positive, health-promoting activities such as attending prenatal care appointments, participating in prenatal education classes, keeping appointments for well-baby visits. The Stork’s Nest prenatal education sessions provide information, educational materials, and variety of other resources and referrals that help clients take good care of themselves and their babies. In 2007, Zeta celebrated its 35th anniversary of collaboration with the March of Dimes. The program was updated to include a new national logo, new educational materials and new incentive items for those mothers participating in the program.
National Educational Foundation The National Educational Foundation of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. with 501(c)3 status is created and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. The principle activities and purpose of the trust are to award scholarship grants to worthy students for the pursuit of higher education; to conduct community educational programs which will aid in the educational and vocational improvement in individual and community living standards; to engage in activities which will aid in the educational development of all women; and to engage in any appropriate research related to the purposes of the Foundation scholarship.
Zeta Organizational Leadership Program The Zeta Organizational Leadership Program is a future-focused, nationally structured, intense leadership training certification program and a blue print for leadership development and enhancement.

The International President’s Initiatives… Elder Care Initiative strives to provide education and awareness about preparing for your senior years. The African American community is least prepared when it comes to retirement, estate planning and understanding the legal and financial preparation needed to care for parents, grandparents and ultimately, for our own long term care. It is a comprehensive program that also focuses on elder abuse awareness, financial peace, supporting the caregiver and volunteering at senior care facilities. Adopt-A-School allows members of Zeta Phi Beta to identify low performing schools and provide assistance in a number of ways to enhance the educational experience, increase test scores and grades. Members purchase supplies and/or equipment, provide volunteer hours, assist with parent engagement programs and work with administrators to identify needs that may be specific to that particular school. Prematurity Awareness Sundays occur every year in the month of November. More than 300 churches across the country are sites for distributing information on prematurity awareness, causes of prematurity and the importance of seeking prenatal care in an effort to decrease infant mortality and decrease the number of low birth weight babies. In 2012 more than 80,000 people were reached. Reclamation Campaign is the goal and the result is the tremendous reduction in the number of inactive Sorors of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated as we prepare for 2020. Last year’s reclamation campaign netted an unprecedented 1,263 inactive Sorors, on an off Boule’ year, who returned to active status in Zeta. To each of our sisters who have not made this decision yet, the question is ARE YOU IN?…..Come Home to Zeta! We need YOU and YOU are deeply missed! St. Jude Sunday of Hope encourages all sorors to support the life-saving work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In April and May, chapters participate in the St. Jude Sunday of Hope program and help St. Jude in its mission of finding cures and saving children. Operation Homefront is one of many missions to serve the community. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. recently donated $20,000 to Operation Homefront at a weekend reception in honor of National Military Appreciation Week celebrations. Many Zeta members are veterans and the sorority chose to partner with Operation Homefront for its national fundraising initiative because of the “America Supports You” recognition by the Department of Defense and its efficiency rating. Zeta Phi Beta wanted to make the most of its donation and Operation Homefront provided the best means to support military families. The sorority’s Veteran’s Day weekend activities included a reception with RADM (r)Evelyn J. Fields and a wreath laying at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Zetas Have Heart is a 90-day journey to improve our health and increase our years with each other. The challenge started on March 31, 2014. Finer Women Don’t Haze is a mission to end hazing. Through a series of town hall meetings, newly introduced federal anti-hazing legislation, and the formation of a national coalition comprised of sororities, fraternities, community agencies, and churches, it is Zeta’s desire that these combined efforts will end a practice that is counterproductive to our image. It is our responsibility as a community-service organization to safeguard future generations and legacies and preserve the positive and rich history of our Sorority. Therefore, we stand united with our brothers of Phi Beta Sigma in an effort to end hazing.

Nu Kappa Zeta Chapter This has been an exciting year for Nu Kappa Zeta Chapter by “GETTING ENGAGED” and providing service to the City of Vicksburg, MS and surrounding areas. We partnered with various agencies and non-profit organizations as Zetas Helping Other People Excel. In July, three delegates attended Boule 2014 in Washington D. C., to handle the business of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated on the national level. We also witnessed our Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., celebrate their Centennial, and will never forget that “awesome” joint Sigma/Zeta Reaffirmation Ceremony! From February 27 - March 1, 2015, NKZ chapter members represented at the MS State Leadership Conference taunting 80% of its membership. The above collage depicts a few of the many ZHOPE programs our chapter implemented throughout this sorority year. The chapter’s most proud moments are the chartering of an Amicae Auxiliary, Reclaiming four inactive sorors, and welcoming six new members into Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Nu Kappa Zeta Chapter is the graduate sponsoring chapter of Zeta Chapter (Alcorn State University, Alcorn, MS.) To whom much is given, much will be required.
Triumphant Dove
Soror Henri Etta Walker Lowe July 14, 1925 – March 25, 2015. Soror Lowe was co-founder of Theta Pi Zeta Chapter and their first chapter Basileus. She nurtured and guided the organization and brought the chapter, state and regional honors for two terms. Mrs. Lowe served as South Central Region Director of Zeta from 1980-1986 and was elected to the office of National Second Anti-Basileus in 1986.
The Prestigious Psi Beta Zeta Chapter has had a year to remember filled with Sisterhood, Service, and Social Action serving the DeSoto County Mississippi community.
Psi Beta Zeta has a passion for service. We have a thriving Stork’s Nest and continue to support the March of Dimes through Prematurity Awareness Activities, Informational Booths at local Health Fairs, and participating in the March of Dimes Walk. Other service initiatives include Breast Cancer Awareness, Eldercare at Golden Living Retirement Center, and AdoptA-Highway. The chapter also enjoys local activities such as the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Celebration, and their National Library Week Activities. We also sponsor scholarships to high school seniors—over $5000 awarded. Our Annual Evening of Elegance Event, a formal affair, helps serve as a fundraiser for educational endeavors. Furthermore, the chapter serves as Adopters.
We are proud to have conducted our first Voter Registration Drive. However, we are ecstatic to have sponsored our the 5th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Walk in collaboration with the City of Southaven was held on January 19, 2015 with around 300 participants. This partnership promotes a sense of unity in efforts to make this great city even better.

Lambda Theta, though small in number, hopes to make a huge print on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi. We plan to promote knowledge, health, and well-being on campus and in our community. Though we will always bleed blue and white, Lambda Theta bleeds black and gold; we love our Eagles and support them as much as possible. Lambda Theta was recognized and awarded a game ball by the president of the Southern Miss Athletics Association. We were the first sorority on campus to have the privilege of being honored; we love our school….Southern Miss to The Top!!!! During our blue white week, in conjunction with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Theta Eta Chapter, we had our annual “Sleep out for the Homeless.” During this event we slept outside, on campus, in the cold and rain from 7pm-3am. We wanted to be able to bring awareness to other as well as ourselves the hardship that homeless people experience on a day to day basis. We now know and understand that we are truly blessed to be able to have a home to go to.

Kappa Gamma Chapter
Zeta Phi Beta
As we reflect upon the 2014-2015 school year, it is evident that the Mighty Kaptivating Kappa Gamma chapter has been hard at work in the name of Zeta. Our chapter has continued to uphold the principles of Scholarship, Service, and Sisterhood while representing ourselves as Finer Women on the campus of Fisk University and in the community. Kappa Gamma has shown that scholarship comes first by holding our monthly event Hit the BookZ where we hold a study session in the library and provide light snacks for the campus. While scholarship is our number one priority, we always make time to serve the community. We participated in both the Breast Cancer and the March of Dimes walk, and we volunteered at Fall Hamilton Elementary School’s math night as well. This semester we held a fish fry where we sold plates and donated a percentage of the money we raised to the March of Dimes. Our chapter also hosts annual events such as How Crowded is Your Bed and Blue Carpet Affair for the campus’ enjoyment. Kappa Gamma’s hard work has not gone without recognition; at the Fisk Activities Board (FAB) end of the year award banquet, our chapter was recognized for our academic excellence and we were given the title of Organization of the Year for the 2014-2015 school year.
Pi Zeta Chapter
Pi Zeta kicked off this sororal year by participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk with Sorors, youth, family, and friends in October 2014. In November 2014, we reached six places of worship with our Zeta Prematurity Awareness Program. We received positive feedback and return invitations for the upcoming year! For Zeta Military Awareness Week, we donated over 200 toiletries to Operation Stand Down Tennessee and over 5,000 coupons to a Family Readiness program. In December 2014, our youth created Holiday cards for the service men and women. We enjoyed another year of volunteering for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Ringing project. This year, Pi Zeta Amicae of Nashville and Pi Zeta youth auxiliary participated in the fun by singing songs and spreading the joy. In February 2015, we welcomed five new members: Merlene Barlow, Chalana Pitts, Connie Swann, Linda Thompson, and Blakedia Wilson. We hosted a Finer Womanhood Dinner and invited the community and Middle Tennessee Chapters to attend. In March 2015, we hosted our 79th Blue Revue Scholarship program, “Principles of Perfection: Polished Pearls”. We had three lovely contestants who attended workshops presented by chapter members; workshops included Beautification, Dress to Impress, Public Speaking and more.
Triumphant Dove Triumphant Dove - Zeta Shirley Bracey Thompson (December 24, 2014.) This Diamond Life Zeta Dove (54 years) was a former chapter president (Gamma Beta Zeta), Chairperson of the Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter Blue Revue, the MS and the South Central Region Water Well Person. She was responsible for assisting in commissioning wells in Africa: the MS Water, the South Central Region Water, the Shirley Thompson Water and the Bracey Legacy Water. Volunteering for Stew Pot in Jackson (last day of the year is the Shirley Thompson Day) over 200 are fed. She also assisted with Stork’s Nest, Debutante Presentations, Adopt-aHighway, etc. Shirley Thompson, a true representative of Finer Womanhood positively touched lives with honor, love and dignity.

Chi Sigma Zeta Chapter This year, Chi Sigma Zeta Chapter focused its efforts on the reactivation of Sigma Xi Chapter on the campus of East Tennessee State University. Reactivation planning started in late December 2014; however, it was not until February 2015 that the Informational meeting was held. At this meeting, seven young ladies showed a strong interest in Zeta and chose to begin the journey to Finer Womanhood. On April 25, 2015, they officially received the oath from South Central Regional Director, Ernestine Wilson and were inducted as new members.
Following the ceremony, a public reception was held. Special guests included Tennessee State Director Donna R. Williams, visiting sorors Carolyn Smith (Pi Zeta) and Stacey Smith (Alpha Eta Zeta), Immediate Past International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Brother Jimmy Hammock, Sigma brothers of Alpha Xi Alpha Chapter (ETSU), university officials, members of the Pan-Hellenic Council, nonGreek undergraduates, and family. Sigma Xi's first act of service was joining Chi Sigma Zeta and Alpha Xi Alpha at the March of Dimes walk in Johnson City on April 26, 2015. Pictured L-R are: Jennifer Delahoussaye, Jasmine Cothern, BriAnna Taylor, Jade Delahoussaye, Reina Henderson, Faith Vaughn, Doretha Benn, and Advisor, Vonetta Lewis (Chi Sigma Zeta).

The Epsilon Zeta Zeta Chapter has been on the move for Zeta! The year started with a jeans and bling event to reclaim Sorors! Sorors listened to “Finer Women”, the official Centennial song, while viewing photos from Boule 2014. Sorors of EZZ participated in several community events and service projects over the course of the fiscal year. EZZ members participated in the Red Kettle Campaign of the Salvation Army, Angel Tree Program of Prison Fellowship Ministries, Prematurity Awareness Sunday and the St. Peter’s Catholic Church Soup Kitchen, to name a few. Additionally, Sorors volunteered to become Court Appointed Special Advocates after a moving presentation by a guest volunteer during one of the regularly scheduled meetings. As always, EZZ participates in several events to raise awareness of the number of premature births in the state of Arkansas. This year, EZZ received funding to host safe sleep workshops at various houses of worship in the city, participated in the annual March for Babies event and hosted the 2nd Annual Bowling for Babies event in Pine Bluff.
Finer Womanhood
This sorority year has proven to be both busy and gratifying for the women of Psi Gamma Zeta Chapter of Auburn, Alabama, and their youth auxiliaries. As “finer” women, we reach out and share our time and talents with the Auburn/Opelika community at large through countless hours of service. Chapter members have donated to the elderly sock campaign, assisted the youth with many of their fundraisers, support the American Heart Association by “Going Red,” March of Dimes March for Babies, and continue to provide for our adopted school, Eastside Elementary School in a neighboring rural community. In addition, the chapter has continued our collaboration with the 100 Black Men of Lee County with the 3 on 3 basketball tournament and has partnered with the Salvation Army with their Red Kettle Campaign by volunteering to ring the bell and helping them fulfill their promise to America of “Doing the Most Good.” Chapter members also participated in Selma 50 by participating in the march across the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge. As part of our Finer Womanhood Observance, we recognized and celebrated the community service dynamism of six local individuals who embodied passion, leadership, and solid virtues by awarding the “Spirit of Hope” awards as they are helping others excel. The chapter also presented its two inaugural scholarships: a book scholarship and the first Amy Harris Core scholarship to four deserving ladies and recognized our Zeta of the Year, Ms. Alexis Smith. We pride ourselves on Finer Womanhood, scholarship, sisterhood and service. We are dedicated to community-based endeavors and will continue to expand and embrace our national initiatives that focus on mind, body, and spirit through Z-HOPE.
Epsilon Zeta Zeta Chapter
Alpha Xi Zeta Chapter Since the purchase of property, ‘Zeta House By the Side of the Road,’ Alpha Xi Zeta Chapter has more frequently met as a Chapter, Committees, Amicae, and Undergraduates. These organizational meetings contributed greatly to our focus: “Enhancing Zeta’s Principles.” Implementation of Z-HOPE Projects placed the Chapter in ‘top service order’ at all levels of the Sorority (State, Region, and National). More than 40 Z-HOPE initiatives were successfully completed and impacted at least 3000 people, with a total cost of approximately $41,000. The Adopt-A-School Project at Macon County’s Deborah Cannon Wolfe Elementary School had an overwhelming, on-going presence and active service during the entire School Calendar Year. The Dance Troupe of this rural school gave a professional dance performance during the Alabama State Conference Session of the Sorority. It doth not yet appear as to the ’Wings that the Alpha Xi Zeta Chapter will launch’ as it continues “Enhancing Zeta’s Principles.”

Chi Lambda Zeta Chapter
Chi Lambda Zeta Chapter continues the work of Zeta as we adhere to National Initiatives such as Elder Care Abuse Awareness, Prematurity Sunday Awareness, Stork’s Nest, March of Dimes- March for Babies, Finer Women Don’t Haze Campaign and Adopt-A-Highway. Always working to move Zeta forward and answering when Zeta calls, we donate fans to the elderly during the summer months, feed the homeless, and donate socks and blankets during the winter months. We make a sizable donation each year to the March of Dimes and serve as volunteers for the March for Babies Walk in Memphis, TN. We tutor and mentor young ladies as part of the Kappa Days of Caring Saturday Tutorial Program throughout the school year. On March 14th, A Finer- Womanhood Observance Program was held where Soror/ Judge Earnest Hunt-Dorse served as guest speaker and Soror April Jackson was named 2015 Zeta of the Year. Soror Yalaunda Taylor explained what FINER Womanhood Observance meant. She along with Zeta Amicae of Bartlett President, Amica DeQuona Taylor the 2015 Amicae of the Year, paid homage to Charter member /Former Amicae Sponsor and Triumphant Soror Sonja Crumble. Soror Crumble was named the 2014 Zeta of the Year and passed shortly thereafter. She served as an educator for over 20 years in the Memphis City Schools. A firm believer in education, she had a special place in the hearts of the members of Chi Lambda Zeta Chapter who named the annual scholarship in her honor. Her family in attendance were well-pleased by the efforts of the Chapter and Auxiliary group. We welcomed new members in May 2015 and congratulated “Silver Sorors” Yalaunda Taylor and Jaqueline Riddle for 25 Years of Service.
Theta Omega Zeta Chapter
2014-2015 has been a busy year for the members of Theta Omega Zeta Chapter. We started the year out by participating in several initiatives on the Local, State and Regional level. Our first project was the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Awareness initiative. Members of the Theta Omega Chapter partnered with the Mt. Hebron District Matron Department to host a community health fair on October18, 2014 in Bellamy, AL. We also participated in the SCR Bell – Ringing Initiative on December 23, 2014 in front of Walmart in Demopolis, AL. The cold and the rain did not stop the members from smiling and collecting funds for this great initiative. On April 16th, Theta Omega Zeta held its annual scholarship fund raiser; “A Magnificent Night of Royal Blue and White”. This event focuses on the great talent that is in the small town of Livingston, AL. Scholarships will be awarded during the 2014-2015 school year to deserving young ladies in Sumter County. We ended the school year with 5 new members of Tau Xi chapter on the campus of University of West Alabama and 6 new members of Theta Omega Zeta Chapter of Livingston, AL .
