ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded January 16, 1920 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. as the sister organization to Phi Beta Sigma, Fraternity, Inc. by five co-eds, Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. These women dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for Black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. The trail blazed by the founders has been traversed by thousands of women dedicated to the emulation of the objectives and ideals of the Sorority. The Sorority was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948); to form an adult auxiliary group, the Amicae, and youth auxiliary groups – the Archonettes, Amicettes, and Pearlettes; to be constitutionally bound to a brother organization, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; and to establish a National Headquarters with paid staff in Washington, D.C. Zeta’s national and local programs include endowment of its National Educational Foundation, community outreach services, and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliary groups have given un-totaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change. THE AMICAE AUXILIARY Early in the 1940, graduate chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority had begun to realize the importance of the prestige, good will, and cooperation of women who for any Greek-lettered organization. In 1948, with the recommendation of the Grand President, Lullelia Harrison, Zeta graduate chapters were allowed to organize auxiliaries that would be known as Zeta Amicae. These groups render valuable services to the sorority and their respective communities. These groups are located in areas where are active chapters of Zeta.
THE YOUTH AUXILIARY The first clubs were formed in the 1950’s under the names of Zetalites, Amicettes and Archonettes. These clubs were composed of young ladies between the ages of 9 & 18 who were matriculating in junior and senior high school. In July 1994 at the 74th Boule’, the national body officially adopted the Pearlettes as a national youth auxiliary of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. In January 1996, the age range was extended to age 8, instead of 7; in order to get a smooth transition from Pearlette to Amicette. These clubs are sponsored by various chapters of the Sorority. Programs were developed, guidelines established and they are viable links to the Sorority. 4

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. South Central Region
Greetings to the Sorors and Amicae of the Unconquerable South Central Region! It is not by chance that the word Unconquerable begins with U! YOU are the heartbeat of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. YOU have embraced the tenacity, perseverance, love, vision, and principles of our Five Pearls – Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Pearl Anna Neal, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, and Fannie Pettie Watts. YOU have worked the programmatic thrusts of our body and supported the platform of our International Grand Basileus, Mary Breaux Wright. YOU have continued to build on the principles of Zeta while blazing new paths! We ended the sororal year with a stellar Regional Conference in Tupelo, Mississippi. The sorors of Mississippi and the city of Tupelo rolled out the blue carpet and welcomed us with open arms, placed our National and Regional seals on the Arena marquee, and turned the lights of City Hall blue. What more could we ask for? Sorors, Amicae, and our Youth reconnected, celebrated, supported, and laid out plans for the upcoming year. Thank you to all who participated in the Conference. But more important, thank you for all that you will do this upcoming sororal year. Could it be happenstance that U is the middle letter of Boule? South Central Sorors attended the Boule in great numbers. YOU were members of National Committees. YOU actively participated with the Centennial Commission. YOU earned numerous awards. YOU made an impact on the Sisterhood. As we move into this new year, remember why YOU became a member of this auspicious organization. Let us commit to working our programs with more enthusiasm and integrity. Let us commit to treating our sisters with respect and love. Let us lift each other up and refuse to speak negatively about our sisters. Let us Get Engaged! Let us serve our communities with enthusiasm! Let us educate our youth and seniors! Let us continue Building on the Principles of Zeta While Blazing New Paths! Humbly & Sisterly, Ernestine Wilson South Central Regional Director Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated
The Centennial Soiree was a night to remember! Sorors gathered in their finest white to celebrate the upcoming 2020 Centennial. Dancing, passport stamping, and table decorating skills stole the show!

The Myrtle and Viola Tyler National Legacy Club (MVTNLC) was developed from a vision held by our 24th International Grand Basileus, Mary Breaux Wright. The development of MVTNLC, named in honor of our Legacy Founders – Soror Myrtle Tyler Faithful and Soror Viola Tyler Goings, was spearheaded by our National Director of Legacies, Dr. Lavern Holyfield with the assistance of a representative from each of our eight (8) regions:
Atlantic - Soror Lauwana Martin Eastern – Dr. Vera J. Palmer Great Lakes – Soror Fannie Harrell Midwestern – Soror Margaret Neal Pacific – Soror Nakeyva Oliver South Central – Dr. Kendra L. Woods Southeastern – Soror Marguerite D. Wilder Southern – Soror Angela Holland MVTNLC held its chartering ceremony during the 2016 Grand Boule in Orlando, Florida. There were approximately 600 Sorors present for the initiation into MVTNLC and another 500 Sorors who are included in the charter group but were unable to attend the ceremony. Each member was presented with a certificate along with an official MVTNLC stole and pin. The ceremony was another “finer” event for our great sisterhood. In addition to the ceremony, the sisterhood also voted to make MVTNLC an official part of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Open enrollment for MVTNLC will be held again prior to the 2018 Grand Boule and the sisterhood will receive more information closer to the date of the event.

The 87th South Central Region Conference held in Tupelo, Mississippi, will go down in Amicae history. Amicae were in attendance on Wednesday night for the “All White Soiree”. We were Blessed to have Grand Wright coin the phrase “from light blue to royal blue” because of the two former Amicae of the Bartlett, TN auxiliary that recently became members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. They are now Sorors Dequona Taylor and Jeneva 'nene' Davis. As we continue to encourage our Amicae to continue/further their education, we look forward to calling many more “Soror” in the near future. Grand Wright gave a “shout out” to others that will be joining our great sisterhood in the near future. Also as we look in the newest Anthology featuring scholarship, we will see one of our very own, State of Arkansas Amicae Coordinator, Soror Barbara Marbley featured on page 311.
The Bernice Callaway Growth Award was presented to the Amicae Auxiliary of Alpha Rho Zeta Chapter, Montgomery, Alabama. Receiving the award on behalf of the auxiliary is Amica Mary E. Burton-Curry. The Bernice Callaway Growth Award is named for the first National Director of Amicae Affairs. Soror/Friend Callaway was from Tennessee. The Amicae Chapter Presidents participated in the opening program “Parade of Hats” presentation. They were BEAUTIFUL!
Amicae of the year went to Amica Annie Mae Smith, Amicae Auxiliary of Itta Bena, Mississippi Theta Pi Zeta Chapter. Amica Smith also served as Co-Marshall for the Conference. Amicae Smith is pictured modeling her apron during the tribute to Amica Beatrice Hines.
The 2016 recipient of the South Central Region Amicae special project donation is the Regional Rehabilitation Center. Soror/Friend Wanda Gray is employed there. Award was presented by Amica Betty Brackett.

A very moving and special tribute was given this year to Amica Beatrice Hines. South Central Region Director Ernestine Wilson deserves a special “THANK YOU” for allowing this presentation to be a part of the SCR conference. The entire region participated. Thank you SCR Executive Board for your monetary contribution. Mississippi State Director Vanessa ensured that she would be able to attend the luncheon. The State of Mississippi Amicae did a tribute featuring aprons. An unofficial copy of the New SOP was presented to Amica Hines. Amica Hines has represented the Amicae on all levels, local, state, region, national, and international. Amica Hines is responsible for penning the “We Love Amicae” song. A tribute to Amica Hines is in the newly revised Zeta Amicae Standard Operating Procedures and Guidelines, Third Edition on pages 137-138. Amica Hines is an inspiration to all. She has been through so much since last year’s Regional Conference. We were blessed to have her family in attendance with her for this even. For all who had a part in this special tribute, I say Thank You!

Submitted by Soror Kezlyn Sellars, Basileus Boule Workshop: Parliamentary Procedures The Boule this year was engaging and very informative. Being a first time Basileus, I needed to learn more about Parliamentary Procedures. I attended this workshop and learned lots of information. This workshop was informative and seemed to be of interest to many Sorors. The room was filled with Sorors eager to learn. The entire group was able to actively participate in a mock meeting. We also divided in to small groups to participate in taking different roles in making motions. We were all given an opportunity to go through the five steps of making a motion. The workshop seemed to be enjoyed by all of the participants.

Did you know that: There are about 3,500 Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID) in the U.S every year? These deaths occur among infants less than one-year-old and have no obvious cause? SIDS (which falls under SUID) is the leading cause of deaths in 1-12months old infants? You should always place your baby on His or Her back, for naps and at night, to reduce the risk of SIDS The ladies of Alpha Rho Zeta have been very busy, working extremely hard to inform our community on the right way to put babies BACK to sleep. Earlier this year, Alpha Rho Zeta applied and received a $1,300 grant from the Safe to Sleep® Public Education Campaign. This campaign is supported by research from The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The Safe to Sleep® Campaign began in 1994 to educate caregivers about reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleeprelated infant deaths such as accidental suffocation and strangulation. The Safe to Sleep® message has reached millions of people around the world and Alpha Rho Zeta is proud to play a part in educating our community! We held three educational seminars facilitated by Soror Carla Carson over the summer. APZ met our goal of educating fifty or more participants. Each participant was required to sign in, fill out a before and after seminar assessment, and with their consent take pictures. Two lucky participants were each awarded a Pack n’ Play playpen and all participants received door prizes that included onesies, baby booties, goodie bags, and educational pamphlets. The final seminar was held at Mt. Gilliard Baptist Church’s Annual Health Fair, where APZ made local news for its participation. After the seminar, we assisted our Stork’s Nest to solicit new clients and spread the word about our services to aid low income women and children. Alpha Rho Zeta is now preparing for the Safe to Sleep® project closing meeting, our annual Fish Fry fundraiser, and gearing up for a blutiful and finer 2016-2017 sorority year!!! We would like to wish every Soror in Zetadome a successful and fulfilling sorority year!
