SAFER, FASTER and Cost effective INSPECTION & REPAIR

Advantages using propeller shaft puller systems compared to traditional methods Safer operations Less damage on shaft and propeller during the pulling operation. By using the propeller shaft puller system, the risk of damaging the shaft during the pulling operation is reduced to a minimum compared to doing it the traditional way with slings and shackles. The shaft and propeller can be pulled out safely and quickly with high accuracy by continuously adjusting the support unit and puller unit from the control position. Increased personnel safety and HSE Risk of personnel injuries during operation is reduced to a minimum since the entire operation is done with less personnel and without man driven hoist. Faster Repair and Inspection The shipyard can reduce the time needed with up to 90% by using the propeller shaft puller system. The whole operation is normally done in just a few hours.

Cost saving for shipyard The traditional way with slings and shackles often takes several days and require double of personnel. By using the propeller shaft puller system the hours and number of personnel are reduced to a minimum. Cost saving for shipowner Reduced time in dock – reduced loss in off hire cost for the ship owner. Other advantages • Can be delivered with equipment for taking down thrusters • Low maintenance • Easy to stow away • Quick and Easy to install before use • Easy to move from one dock to another • Short payment period on investment. (Depending on activity at the repair yard.)

LARGE system 50 - 80T For doing propeller shaft pulling operations on larger ships, NDM has developed a larger propeller shaft puller system consisting of a puller unit and two off combined support/rudder removal units suitable for taking down rudders up to 40T In addition the system can be delivered with equipment for taking down thrusters. Depending on configuration, SWL of the system is ranging from 50 – 80T SWL. All units are quickly installed and connected prior to a propeller shaft pulling operation. When not in use the system is easily stowed away. The puller unit and support unit(s) can be adjusted in vertical and horizontal direction and are easily operated from the control valves on the puller unit.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION Both the standard and the large system are designed for rails and delivered with hydraulic driven units that are adjustable in horizontal and vertical direction. The main difference is the total SWL and the way of removing the rudder prior to the pulling of the shaft. The propeller shaft puller unit is the main part of both systems. One or two support units completes the system depending on length of shafts. The rails are customer supply and length is made according to customer needs. The equipment can easily be stowed away when the job is finished. The operator runs the entire operation from the control central on the propeller shaft puller unit. The shaft is pulled out safely and quickly without man driven hoist.

Preparation The rail track is set up as a prolongation of the propeller shaft axis - sufficiently beyond the propeller hub to make sure the front plate of the shaft puller can be brought in contact with the propeller hub. The shaft puller is lifted on to the rails, connected, wire is tightened and the HPU is started. Support unit(s) can be placed on the rails now or later depending on operation.

Rudder removal The standard system is delivered with a fork for removal of rudders up to 6T. The fork is mounted on to the puller unit and the rudder is taken down by help of the lifting lugs on the fork and slings. The rudder is lifted off and placed on the side until the operation is completed. The large system has an integrated rudder removal function in the support units which can take down rudders up to 40T. Please note that two support units are needed for this operation The support units are locked to the rail, by using the rail clamps. The U-frame is lifted up until the rudder rests on it and the fixation arms are tightened up clamp the rudder to the U-frame. When the rudder is disconnected from the rudder stock, the support units can be lowered to the bottom position before the operator takes them out in the crane coverage area.

Shaft removal with the 20 T standard system

Shaft removal After the shaft puller is placed in position by operating the control valves, the propeller hub is strapped to the front plate. When the shaft coupling is disconnected (between the propeller shaft and gearbox) the operator can start pulling the shaft outwards whilst constantly adjusting the boom height and front plate to keep the shaft in centre of the shaft bushing. When the shaft has been brought out to an extent where support is needed the support unit is lifted. For longer shafts use two support units. The entire process is reversed to put the shaft back in and the rudder back in place.

Thruster Removal NDM has developed equipment for taking out thrusters. The equipment is connected to the propeller shaft front plate using the same principle as the fork for taking down rudder.
