f ive of the best things about st. james’ St. James’ Episcopal School is a remarkable place where children grow and learn. We want to share with you five of the many things that we think make St. James’ extraordinary — 1 Diversity Our dedication to social, ethnic, racial and economic diversity represents the heart and soul of St. James’ mission. Our children benefit profoundly from the invaluable experience of being in a school that mirrors the world we live in.

2 Teachers We are fortunate to have incredible, dedicated and thoughtful teachers who instill creativity, intellectual integrity, critical thinking, and most important, the joy of learning. 3

More Than Academics St. James’ enriched program of academic rigor builds an environment that supports students’ intellectual and moral development as they learn the virtue of respect and the value of serving others.

4

Community St. James’ is a welcoming, respectful and warm community that fosters inclusiveness and belonging. Our families are committed to supporting the school financially, as well as through countless volunteer hours.

5

Relationship to St. James’ Church The bond between the school and church is evident in our All School Chapel, an inclusive, welcoming event for children and parents from a multitude of religious traditions. Seeing the harmonious diversity of our school community at All School Chapel reminds us that we are a microcosm of our larger community and society — and that these children learning, living, sharing, developing and worshiping together are an embodiment of our best hopes and dreams, not only for our children but also for our world.

2009–10 highlights The year’s highlights illustrate how St. James’ students translate the school’s values into action. Our students excel academically, express themselves artistically, and give back to others. art Under the creative direction of Mr. Danenberg, St. James’ students spent the year studying artistic masters such as Salvador Dali, Georges Rouault, Paul Gauguin, Romare Bearden, Jackson Pollock and Georgia O’Keeffe. Inspired by the lessons, students created their own masterpieces, which were unveiled at the St. James’ Annual Art Show in May 2010.

math Competing against students throughout California, St. James’ students were among the finalists in the Math League’s 2009 Math Contest, placing third in the Los Angeles region and 18th in the state. Two St. James’ students, David Jang and Sean Jung, made the list of the top 49 students in California.

haiti In response to the devastating earthquake that shook Haiti on January 12, 2010, a student-initiated fundraiser called "Pennies From Heaven" raised money for St. Jacques, St. James’ sister school in rural northern Haiti, as well as other relief funds such as the American Red Cross and the Episcopal Relief Development Fund.

science lab Much to the delight of students, parents and teachers, the state-of-the-art Leonetti/O’Connell Science Lab opened in September 2009. Thanks to a generous grant from the Leonetti/O’Connell Foundation, funds raised through the Bug Boogie Bash, and support from the school’s general operating funds, the lab ensures that St. James’ students have the best tools to learn the latest in science exploration.

achievement The median score for St. James’ students on each ERB (Educational Records Bureau) subtest was above the median for independent-school students nationwide in 2009-10. In addition, our students score higher as they spend more years enrolled at St. James’.

financial report 2009–2010 was a challenging year for St. James’ School. We were, of course, affected by the recession. Applications declined, but enrollment was steady, requests for tuition assistance increased, and annual giving fell slightly. Nevertheless, thanks to good general expense control at the school, we were able to end the year with a surplus without any layoffs or cutbacks in the educational program. We also benefited from the very successful PSF event at the California Science Center and other PSF contributions, although these gifts are restricted and may only be used for expenditures approved by the PSF. We are extremely grateful for the generosity and hard work of all the parents involved. The environment remains difficult. Although the school has strong financial reserves, it is important they be kept for major projects and for emergencies and not be used for day-to-day expenditure. As you all know, tuition does not cover the school’s costs. We are in the process of looking for a new development director, and we hope to have an even larger number of parents contribute to Annual Giving and to PSF events. I look forward to another happy and successful year at St. James’.

parent support fellowship Without you, we’re nothing! Members of the Parent Support Fellowship tirelessly donate countless hours to building relationships among parents, faculty and staff. They organize eagerly anticipated events that form the bedrock of our school traditions and strengthen the bonds in our school community. This year, PSF events raised more than $117,000. We are grateful to everyone who participated in PSF, particularly the co-chairs for 2009–10, Sarah Bynum, Hannah Choi, Rodney Jeffries, Soo Ji Park and Ida Peter, as well as the treasurer, Karen Cowan. Thank you for a job well done!

“ “ “ 20

I truly cherish the time that I spent as a PSF co-chair. Not only was I able to form meaningful relationships with other parents within the school community, I got to see firsthand how parents who are united can improve and enhance any situation.

– Rodney Jeffries

As the PSF treasurer this year, I’ve been in service to a great school, with fabulous

parents and amazing teachers. I’ve had the opportunity to assist where needed and help the school raise money.

– Karen Cowan

Serving as the preschool rep to the PSF this year was a wonderful way to get to know the “big school” — I was really struck by how deeply committed the parents are to supporting the teachers and enhancing the day-to-day experience of the kids.

shoot for the stars In May 2010, St. James’ held Shoot for the Stars, our spring fundraising event, at the California Science Center. Families explored the exhibits and learned about the rich variety in our physical world in the center’s new Ecosystems gallery. Parents and children were enthralled by the private screening of Hubble 3D, introduced by our own Dr. Rich. Kelley Nelson did a fine job as auctioneer during the fast-paced bidding for fabulous donated items. The live, silent and children’s auctions, along with teachers’ wish lists, raised more than $90,000 for outdoor equipment for the preschool and computer technology equipment for the upper school.

korean sunday One of the highlights of every year at St. James’ is Korean Sunday! On March 14, 2010, the day began with a church service featuring prayers in Korean and Korean music. Dr. Paul Lee, a parent and trustee, touched us all with his talk about what it means to be a KoreanAmerican. The festivities included a rich tapestry of Korean culture, including traditional Korean children’s games, kite-flying, martial arts demonstrations, tea tasting and the replication of a traditional Korean living room right there in St. James’ Hall. St. James’ students performed Korean dance, and the St. James’ Korean Drumming Corps thrilled us with their thundering concert. Our school community treasures this opportunity to celebrate the Korean culture each year.

dad’s pancake breakfast St. James’ fathers cooked up a tasty breakfast at the annual Dad’s Pancake Breakfast in the parish hall. School families, staff and parishioners enjoyed the delicious food and got to know each other better. Thanks to Trustee Jeff Lane for flipping the flapjacks and to the father-chefs who organized the event.
