“SANA BUKAS PA ANG KAHAPON” PREMIERES ON ABS-CBN THIS JUNE
ABS-CBN will introduce two entirely different women seeking for justice in its newest primetime drama series titled “Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon” that is set to air this June. In the series, the new generation’s ‘Movie Queen’ Bea Alonzo will portray the characters of the feisty lawyer, Emmanuelle and the kind-hearted heiress of a huge company named Rose, who will be accused of a crime she did not commit. “The personalities of my two roles are very different from each other. Emmanuelle has a very strong personality and a successful career, but her biggest struggle is being a good mother to her only son. While, Rose grew up having a comfortable life but lacks confidence in herself because of the way people insult her looks,” Bea said. How will fate entwine the lives of Rose and Emmanuelle who are both seeking for justice? Will finding the truth be enough to ease out the pain that people have caused them? Will true love be able to sweeten and take away all the bitterness in their hearts? Aside from Bea, the powerhouse cast of “Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon” is composed of award-winning actors Paulo Avelino, Dina Bonnevie, Tonton Gutierrez, Maricar Reyes, and Albert Martinez; and veteran artists Eddie Garcia, Anita Linda, and Susan Roces for their remarkable portrayals. Born as Rodel Nacianceno, the then newcomer believed he wasn’t being taken seriously and decided to have a screen name. Dubbed as the local showbiz’s “King of Primetime,” he said in Gandang Gabi Vice that talent manager Ed Instrella, who also handles the careers of some films veterans like Cherry Pie Picache and Jaclyn Jose, suggested his screen name. Nung nagsisimula kasi ako, siyempre, marami sa’yong tumutulong,” Martin said. “Sabi niya sa akin, ‘Alam mo, may bagay na pangalan sa’yo -- Coco Martin.’ Sabi ko, ‘Coco Martin? Parang hindi seryoso. Anne Curtis WOW-ed crowd “again” in the “Big Dome’’ “The Forbidden Concert Round 2: Annekapal” happened last May 16 with the non-singer belting out songs from Whitney Houston, Barbara Streisand, Katy Perry, and many more. Anne Curtis, known for her “sintonado” voice, made up to her fans by performing in a “buwis buhay” kind of production. The TV host-actress sang her heart out while she was suspended in the air, doing extreme stunts like flipping and tumbling, taking prompts from the world-celebrated Cirque du Soleil. She also took the notch higher by whooshing her fans away with her over-the-top costumes. Her fans’ eyes feasted on sparkles, gown lighting up, body-hugging clothes and sequined one-piece outfits.
The concert also starred several recognized singers in the industry: Regine Velasquez, Robert Seña, Martin Nievera and Ogie Alcasid were present. Anne went emotional when she was about to sing David Guetta’s song “Titanium” and dedicated it to “any one that has had anything to say about me, good or bad.” She added, “I had my ups and downs, lessons learned… We just gonna learn to live more, to keep continuing and to know when it is when we committed a mistake, to admit more mistakes and to just move on and be a better person.” The actress’ close friend, Luis Manzano and “It’s Showtime” co-host, Billy Crawford were also there and they performed a short stint that made the crowd giggle more. www.filipinostarmagazine.com

Continuously reaching for the stars
I
n 2003, 15-year-old Maja Ross Andres Salvador first appeared pleading in ABS-CBN’s show, ‘The Buzz’, hosted by Boy Abunda searching for her long lost father, Ross Rival, a former actor. Having rooted from a family of actors (aunt Jobelle Salvador and uncle Phillip Salvador), it didn’t take long for ABS-CBN executive, Charo Santos-Concio to notice her angelic and innocent demeanor, and had her staff look for Maja and had her sign under the network. And indeed, Maja was signed and was first introduced as John Pratts’ partner in 2003 drama series ‘It Might Be You’ top-billed by John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo. She was later on casted as one of the lead characters in ‘Spirits’ and followed several appearances in ‘Maalaala Mo Kaya’s’ episodes. 2006 was a good year for Maja because that was when she first debuted in a film as a supporting actress in the horror movie ‘Sukob’ which earned her a Star Award for Movies for New Movie Actress of the Year and also bagged the Golden Screen Award for Breakthrough Performance by an actress. She was also nominated at the FAMAS Awards for Best Supporting Actress. She was reunited with John Lloyd and Bea Alonzo in the movie ‘One More Chance’ in 2007. Her character had movie critics claiming that her portrayal of the character was “perfect and luminous’’. Maja Salvador seemed to unstoppable since then. She was even tagged as the “Dance Princess of the Philippines”. She top-billed several drama series: Nagsimula sa Puso, May Bukas Pa, Impostor, Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin, Ina, Kapatid, Anak and now plays the ‘’mistress’ role in ‘The Legal Wife’ alongside Angel Locsin and Jericho Rosales. The 25-year-old actress-dancer-producer added yet another title in her name when she released her first album last March with her debut single “Dahan-dahan”. Maja shares to ABS-CBN how happy she was with her album, “Masaya ako na nabigyan ako ng chance na ‘yung talent ko sa pagkanta ay mai-se-share ko naman sa kanila... Masaya ako na kunwari, nag-kocommute sila o may ginagawa sila, naririnig nila ‘yung boses ko. ‘Yung hindi nalang nila ako napapanood. This time, sa radyo maririnig naman nila.” Surely, Pinoys worldwide have a lot to look forward to in Maja Salavador’s career. She’s in her peak, not yet to be stopped and has no signs of doing so. Bidding an angel on earth, ‘Mama Nene’, By Zsa Zsa Zorilla
a sweet goodbye C
onsidered to be as “Ina ng Pelikulang Filipino” Azucena “Nene” Vera-Perez was remembered by many because of her “forgiving and compassionate heart”. A woman, a mother who hadthe “natural grace, the ability to stand firm and yet remained kind”. She’s known for a lot of things, never short of goodness, but most importantly, because of her “resilient faith in God’s love and mercy”. At 96, she surely has tasted the sweetness and bitterness life has to offer. Her daughter, Pangasinan’s 4th district Congresswoman Gina De Venecia, fondly referred as “Manay Gina” recalled how her mother stayed strong through all the ordeals in her life saying, “My mother was our rock Gibraltar. She was our strength. She gave me the courage to move-on after my daughter passed away. So my mother, inspite of all the tragedies she’s experienced in life, she lost her only brother when he was 21, he was a summa cum laude but he died of typhoid fever, she lost her father, her mother, her husband and her son, Bobby my younger brother when he was 26 and then my daughter KC, the granddaughter, but inspite of that she never lost her faith in God. She remained strong and resilient. That’s what my mother taught me of the most.’’
The Congresswoman’s husband, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Jose de Venecia Jr. shared, “She is very wise and talented and she also is very loving of her family and friends and specially of the poor people. She always has charity in her heart. Whatever she has she shares, specially with the poor people.” She is not only a mother to her immediate family, but she is too to all those she’s met, she had worked with, and to those whose had an opportunity of meeting her. Her “bunso”, Kokoy, referred to her mother as the “glue that held our family together.” In his eulogy he said, “Sunday lunches in Valencia drew not just the immediate family but also relatives and friends who could show up unannounced and still be assured of gracious, open-arms and her genuine pleasure in seeing them. No one was a stranger to Mama.” He then jokingly added, “She may forget their names or call them by another’s but she always makes people feel special and loved,” that made the condolers giggle with him. “Amor
con amorsepaga; love begets love,” his mother’s reminder whom he referred as someone who “just exudes love and warmth”. Former child actor and grandson of Mama Nene, Christopher “Toff” de Venecia shared his fond memories of his grandmother, “I will never forget when I tried to talk to her in Spanish ‘cause I was learning it in college, she was so fluent and I learned a few words but I didn’t get beyond ‘Si’, ‘Hola! Que tal?’ and ‘Bien’. I also remembered just being in her room and hanging out with her as I watch all of her favorite TV shows. I love Mama Nene. I don’t remember a day of my life that she wasn’t a part of. So I feel like now, a huge part of my life just died.” Toff finds solace on “the fact that she’s now with my sister KC and they probably made their own version of Valencia there in heaven.” 8

The Queen of Philippine movies, Gloria Romero in her shaky-almostabout-to-burst-in-tears-voice said, “Oh! My goodness. I have so many wonderful and nice memories kay Mama Nene. I met her when I was 16 and now I’m 80 years old. I can hardly talk about Mama Nene; it makes me so sad. I love her dearly. She’s my second Mama.” The priest during the homily reassured everyone by saying,“We have no fears. We have no anxieties. We have no doubts that she was God’s gift from heaven. She made heaven in earth and has nowhere else to go but back in heaven.” Mama Nene succumbed to pneumonia that led to the failure of her vital organs at 2:56 a.m. at the St. Luke’s Medical Center last May 14. She would have turned 97 last May 22. She was laid to rest in their family mausoleum at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque.

AFTER TECHNICAL DECISION, DEMANDS REMATCH
A
fter being declared the new world featherweight champion through a victory via technical decision, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is still hungry for another win against SimpiweVetyeka. Donaire took home the title after all three judges scored the bout 49-46 in his favor. However, after taking a headbutt in the first round, he suffered a bad cut above his left eye. The new champion said that the attack had left him “out of it” in the rounds that followed. He even registered a
knockdown in the fourth round, but before the fifth round started, Donaire told the referee that he could no longer see. This ended the fight, with Donaire still being granted the victory, despite his injuries. Not satisfied with the way the match played out, “The Filipino Flash” wants to grant an immediate rematch with Vetyeka. “Me and Vetyeka need to do this all over again, because he is an amazing fighter, and I want to congratulate him for being an amazing fighter,” he said. “Hopefully, we can get an amazing fight for you guys all over again.” Vetyeka welcomed Donaire’s invitation and Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum, who promoted the fight, said they will
do the rematch “as soon as possible”. After having returned to the Philippines, Donaire expressed his thanks to all his supporters. He assured them that, despite awaiting a rematch, he went all out, saying, “I’m happy to know that I gave it all that I got.” When asked about how he will be taking on what’s ahead of him, Donaire promised his fans that they’d see a faster and stronger version of himself. “That’s the game plan—to get better and better and better for each fight.” Arum suggested in an interview with ABS-CBN News that the Donaire-Vetyeka rematch may be held in November, also in Macau--possibly as part of the fight card for the next fight date of Manny Pacquiao.
MarNella and NLex in “Tapatan Ni Tunying” Marlo Mortel Works Hard For Family And Mom With Cancer
Y
oung star Marlo Mortel considers the unexpected warm response of fans to his team-up with Janella Salvador, called MarNella, a timely break for him after his mother was diagnosed with cancer recently. Marlo, who admits to be his family’s breadwinner at the age of 21, reveals how the entertainment industry has been helping them financially. “My mom was diagnosed with cancer just last month. I am thankful with my job because I am able to provide for our needs now. We come from a simple family and we are not rich,” he shares in “Tapatan Ni Tunying” airing this Thursday (June 5). Janella, on the other hand, is also grateful with their teamup as she enjoys the opportunity to prove her talents beyond the shadow of her mother, singer Jenine Desiderio. When asked if she would like follow her mother’s footsteps, she said, “Yes, I want too. But right now, since I started in acting, I would like to prioritize it more.”
Meanwhile, another hit loveteam of today, Nash Aguas and Alexa Ilacad, or NLex, already feel, at a very young age, the heavy responsibility of serving as good role models for the youth. “We have to be careful with our actions because there are also children aged eight or seven years old who watch and admire us. They are still innocent so we have to serve as good examples for them because they will imitate us,” Nash says. “We go to school, and at the same time, we are making other people happy with our career. I think that is the one they should admire in us -- how we manage our time for studies, family, friendship towards other people, and career,” Alexa adds. Heart Evangelista’s first art exhibit

ctress-TV host turned artist recently launched her exhibit last May 8 in Ayala Museum’s Artist Space in Makati City. Not only did her artwork sold on its first day, it was sold an hour after the display was revealed. The exhibit was titled, “I am Love Marie: The Art and Works of Love Marie Ongpauco” which comprised of 19 paintings that took a year for the actress to finish. “The stronger the emotion, the bigger it should be. Like when I’m angry, I feel that the canvas is never big enough,” said the 29-year-old actress in an article published by Manila Bulletin. Prior to the unraveling, Heart gave out a sneak peek through her personal Instagram account. Women were mostly the subject of her artworks, with some having big and beautiful hair. Evangelista said, “Women inspires me. I look at each painting like a friend.” She also noted that these women were “not of anyone in particular.” The actress had long been inclined to painting but ceased when she entered show business. She reconciled with it during her feud with her parents exactly a year ago saying, “it became my solace after a series of family problems.’’ Her resorting to painting to ease her troubles away resulted to a calmer and a more mature Heart Evangelista.

She losses all of her hair due to chemo but instead of sitting back and letting her condition take over, she goes on an imaginary quest to find her hair and the answer to the question, ‘Why is cancer?’’’ “We couldn’t think of a better show to launch The Sandbox Collective with. The themes are a bit dark – tackling the issues of abandonment, suicide, the existence of God, cancer, death and the finiteness of life. But it approaches it with innocence and child-like wonderment – each issue being addressed within the context of Dani’s incredible journey,” says the director, Toff de Venecia. aleb Johnson named American Idol winner The American singing competition named Johnson as their Season 13 winner beating his girl pal, Jena Irene. Johnson made history by being the first true hard-rocker to win the title. He not only conquered the championship but he also gets to take home a huge cash prize, a record deal and both him and runner-up Jena gets to drive home a Ford Mustang.
Caleb went through three auditions before he finally became an A.I. finalist, just like last year’s winner, Candice Glover. He first auditioned in Season 10 and made it to Hollywood Week then in Season 11 but was cut off in Vegas after he messed up his lyrics. The 23-year-old winner had little to say after bagging the top prize but didn’t forget to thank the crowd saying, “Thank you guys so much.”

ustin Timberlake might as well have “won the lottery” by taking home seven awards from the BMAs that happened at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada last May 18. Timberlake took home the Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top R&B Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album and the Top R&B Album trophies. The popstar also took the lead in Album award having gotten two. Ludacris, musician and actor, hosted the show. The awards night made television history by presenting never-before-seen-tandems, explosive début performances and once-in-a-lifetime Michael Jackson experience.
“Royals” singer, Lorde, took home the Top New Artist and the Top Rock Song for the song mentioned. American Idol 4th season winner, Carrie Underwood received the Milestone. here’s this secondhand book that I’ve got last year which mentioned about a woman who traveled in an area of Nepal and decided to stay there for years. she mentioned that being there made her see how far the world has gone – and that she wishes it would take a pause and just do not brace too much advancement. I remember underlining her words. I remember how strongly I felt her. I was in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. I wish Iloilo City has more trees. So while traveling around some tourist spots, Manong and Jojo mentioned to us that Balsahan Natural Pool is slowly becoming too commercialized. Cement, higher entrance fee, painted rocks and sheds. I guess it’s the same case for most of the more ‘touristy’ places in this country. I am not the happiest about it. Both of them are disheartened too. Though I totally admire how the local government and the people maintain such cleanliness in most places, I have this fear that in 2 or 3 years’ time, the natural beauty shall be stripped off slowly, painfully. Materialism is this enormous powerful beast these days.Tourism, if not cultivating sustainability — is really a scary thing. Let me tell you this though, I felt small and blessed again – finding a little piece of paradise with the mangroves (where beach bummers do not usually stay at) in Pristine. Snorkeled in some islands of Honda Bay and went wow to the colorful sea creatures. Sit grateful for the spectacular summer skies whilst tricycle, multicab and jeepney rides. Walked unfamiliar corners. Got sensuous – gastronomically. Marveled at the beautiful creations of the imagination and the hands. Met new people and 20

shared a mini-eternity with them within a fleeting moment. It was great to do Couchsurfing again. I’ve had really enriching exchanges with our host and the other travelers (from China, USA and France) in her house. Their dog, Snoopy gave birth in our second night there. It was a lovely evening under the stars, over vino and lots of stories about being 24, languages and so forth. At Iwahig (prison without walls), an
inmate stood beside me and told me that he misses his family so much- and that it will take him 28 years more (not sure if he has someone/something to go home to by that time). One of them who made some wood burning art gave us a gentle farewell and told Marrz, “I pray that you become famous. Keep making those beautiful paintings.” Back home (really sunburned), we made tokwabunwiches and talked about the trees, the city in the forest and the roots band from Iloilo who found home there.

This dish can be served warm or cold. It is best eaten as a snack (serving size is about 2×3 inches). If you prefer this dish as a dessert then serve it in smaller 2”x 2” portions.
Ingredients 1 pack thawed frozen Cassava (I used Rosan brand, which is preservative free and only 99 cents at Superstore) 1 can organic coconut milk, 400 ml. (I used Thai kitchen brand which has 60% less calories and fat) 1/2 cup organic molasses (amber in color) 1/4 cup Xyla sugar 3 scoops Kaizen whey powder 1 tbsp. coconut virgin oil to line the glass bake ware.

This is gluten free, protein packed and calories are greatly reduced from the typical Filipino recipe. This is the recipe I made for my mom who had type 2 diabetes. My mom is a great cook and enjoys great tasting food. With recipes such as this, her blood sugar level was kept at a constant.
Directions
Topping
In a large bowl, combine the first 4 ingredients. Mix really well so the sugar components are well incorporated into the mixture.
In a metal container, warm the honey and butter mixture in an oven toaster for 2 min. (I don’t like nuking my food in a microwave).
In a 2.75 quart glass bake ware, pour in the well blended mixture. Bake for an hour at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the cake from the oven and rest for 10 mins. or so.

2 tbsp. whipped butter 2 tbsp. honey 1/4 cup coarsely grated mozzarella
Mix the 2 ingredients really well. Using the backside of a spoon, spread the mixture evenly. Either use a torch or put it back in the oven to broil the topping (setting is full broil, at 500 degree F). Broil for 4 minutes to get that burnt and caramelized effect. Spread the coarsely grated mozzarella evenly and put back to be broiled once again for 1-3 minutes to melt the cheese.
