Biology paper will be postponed or not as it is the baby of the Board. My duty was to inform the observers as these papers were found in my School,” the Principal said. Eyewitnesses said that the two policemen Head Constable Mohammad Maqbool Mir, (971/S) and Sgct Nazir Ahmad Hajam (1405/S) fell on road after getting hit by bullets. Blood oozed out from their bodies and they were immediately rushed to the hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. A girl from Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district was also injured in the attack and she was also shifted to hospital. She has been identified as Ishrat daughter of Ali Mohammad Magrey. Talking to reporters, Inspector General of Police A.G.Mir said that the initial investigation has revealed that Hizb militants carried out the attack. “We have worked out such cases in the past and hopefully this case will be cracked as well,” he said adding that Pistol was used in the attack. Mir further said that they have never claimed that militancy has come down to zero level. “Militancy still persists in Valley and we will hopefully crack this case and bring the culprits to justice,” he said. The attack came just three days ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Valley. Soon after the attack, SOG, Police and CRPF cordoned off the area and started search operation when reports last came. It is pertinent to mention here that on Friday, Police carried out a crackdown in the Srinagar City's commercial hub Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas following intelligence inputs that militants might try to strike in the city centre. However, no arrests or recoveries were made on that occasion. According to a police hand out, two policemen were killed and a girl got injured when militants opened fire in Hari Singh High Street, in the jurisdiction of Police station Shaheed-Ganj,on Saturday. “Two police personnel Head Constable Mohammad Maqbool Mir, (971/S) son of Ghulam Ahmad Mir resident of Gondipora, Pulwama, Sgct Nazir Ahmad Hajam (1405/S) son of Ali Mohammad resident of Shurath, Kulgam and a girl Ishrat daughter of Ali Mohammad Magrey resident of Ganderbal were injured. It is a serious matter and it should be thoroughly probed,” one of the students Rumisa Shafi said. When contacted, Chairman BOPEE, R.D.Sharma told CNS that it is a human error and such errors have occurred in various examinations. “Let me assure you the Board will take stern action against the guilty. We have decided to postpone the Biology paper that was scheduled to be conducted in the morning on Sunday,” Sharma said. When asked that students are leveling allegations against the BOPEE, R.D.Sharma said that it is only a human error and students should not worry at all. “It is the duty of the media to restore confidence among students and please make the students believe that these papers were not leaked. If it would have been like that then how could we then postpone the examination of Biology paper,” he said adding the no official is involved in this blunder. Pertinently, the credibility and authenticity of the results declared by BOPEE in June 2012 were questioned by parents and aspirants as they had alleged that then BOPEE Chairman had sold CET papers for a sum of Rs 65 lakh which fetched an amount of Rs 5 Crore to brokers as they allegedly sold those papers to affluent one.

must take collective responsibility.Expressing his serious concern over the drastic climate change in Ladakh since past few decades, CEC said that though climate change is a common concern and big challenge of entire world but when it comes to Ladakh’s environment, it is the prime duty of Ladakhi people to act locally and young educated students have to play a very crucial role to spread awareness about environment across Ladakh region. Spalbar said “We must have our future by choice not by chance”. He suggested LEAF to focus Leh area including colonies while conducting environment awareness saying that people living in villages are more conscious about their environment than people living in city and assured his utmost cooperation to LEAF in all respects.

HOROSCOPE Aries

March 21-April 19 Be aggressive with your thoughts today, Aries. You might feel a bit emotionally detached. You will most certainly want your freedom. Spend some time alone to sort things out. An ex from years ago might appear on your doorstep, so don’t be too surprised when he or she shows up. Take a nonjudgmental attitude toward everything you encounter.

Taurus April 20-May 20

What are you waiting for, Taurus? Go for the gold. All you need to do is shine. You have the opportunity to merge with powerful groups today, so make sure to keep your eyes open. Do things that will improve your current status in a finance-related situation. Your sharp wit and endless facts and information will come in handy. Have a joke at the ready.

Gemini May 21-June 21

Rid yourself of all regret, Gemini. Guilt is useless. It doesn’t do anyone any good. Your emotions are volatile and apt to erupt in unexpected bursts. Feel free to let it all out. Today isn’t the best day to ask for sympathy, but that shouldn’t be your goal anyway. Only you can clean out the negative issues that are floating around in your heart and mind.

Cancer June 22-July 22

There’s a fire burning in you today, Cancer. Be careful how you use it. There’s a chance you could offend someone if you get too excited and fail to notice how your arrogant attitude affects people around you. Take your joy and spread it to the collective by empowering others. You will feel better about yourself and make more friends in the process.

Leo

July 23-August 22 You might have to toughen your skin today, Leo. Don’t automatically write someone off because of an action that you think is offensive. Allow others to have their opinions and respect their right to express them openly. Keep an open mind and don’t judge. Maintain a diplomatic attitude and keep your critical thoughts to yourself.

Virgo

August 23-September 22

Break away from all mental constraints today, Virgo. The only thing holding you back could be your own mind. Don’t fear failure. The cards are in your favor. Move forward with the attitude that you’re going to succeed, and you will. Your emotions are strong and active. Things are resonating well for you, so speak your mind openly.

Libra

September 23-October 23 Today you may have difficulty connecting with others, Libra. People may be unnecessarily harsh for no reason. Try not to get too emotionally worked up over any slights. Keep a safe distance between you and the drama around you. The next step you take might send you into quicksand, so make sure there’s a good friend nearby to pull you out.

Scorpio

October 24-November 21 You will be the hit of the party today. Everyone wants to talk to you. Great transitions are happening in your life right now, and you should look at how you can adopt new principles and attitudes toward them. Your emotions suggest that you take an unconventional approach to the day. The things you learn may be things you want to incorporate into your being on a long-term.

Sagittarius November 22-December 21

Unless you want to get into an intellectual sparring match today, you might want to stay home, Sagittarius. But this battle of wits could also take place in your own kitchen, so perhaps you should take a long walk by yourself and avoid others. Or simply prepare for battle. People aren’t apt to be very sympathetic to your cause, so wear your armor.

Capricorn December 22-January 19

Spend time with good friends today, Capricorn. Share dinner with people you love and feel free to be generous with the food and drink. You have the ability to control just about every situation. Remind others that they’re part of a greater whole and that working together is the key to accomplishing great feats. Inspire others to be the best they can be.

Aquarius January 20-February 18

Unexpected things are on the way and it’s best to be emotionally and physically prepared. You may be rather indecisive, but when you do act, your moves manifest in short, powerful bursts. Work to keep your dreams in motion. There are people out there who have the resources you need to be successful. Befriend them and share your goals.

Pisces

February 19-March 20 Why go through today with doubts or fears, Pisces? You have every reason to be happy. The things you project to the world today will prove extremely favorable. Don’t hesitate to enjoy this day to the fullest. People will be eager to participate in whatever you have going on. As long as you remain confident in yourself, everyone else will agree.

Fuel Adulteration

T

here is no questioning that petrol available at refilling stations in Kashmir, like many parts of India, is adulterated primarily with diesel and sometimes with kerosene as well and the action taken by petroleum companies and the Union Ministry of Petroleum to check this adulteration is justified. In fact, it is the most appropriate step towards relieving vehicle owners of frequent overhauls of their engines that get spoiled by the adulterated fuel sold at petrol stations. In a place like Srinagar where vehicle numbers are soaring each passing day and have already surpassed all estimations, the adulteration serves as a clandestine means of minting large amounts of money from vehicle owners. While petrol stations have failed to attract customers by quality services and by providing facilities other than petrol, adulteration has come to their advantage along with soaring vehicle numbers. Amid this, as the petrol station owners threaten of shutting down stations in case the drive continues, the motive is clearly getting their adulteration authenticated. Though they claim that the fuel is adulterated at source, the claim holds little ground given the norms petroleum companies observe. A fuel tanker that has transported kerosene is later refilled with petrol cannot adulterate fuel beyond a certain degree – at least not to the degree that was found at the petrol stations sealed by the government in area of Srinagar. And when the government is ready to act against the petroleum companies as well in case their products is found adulterated at source, the threat of a shutdown has no other motive than preventing the government from protecting consumer rights. The fact is that the dealers are frustrated by the court decision allowing the drive to test samples on the spot through a high tech kit that can indicate levels of adulteration which have been going unnoticed earlier. Though the levels are not hard to maintain, dealers are trying to cash on the essentiality of the service they are providing. By threatening to shut down, they are blackmailing our society. However, the station owners must realize that government can also act against them in case they do not budge before the government on an issue they have already been wrong in the court of law. Lax fuel standards easily allow for some amount of adulteration. It is possible to adulterate 'intelligently' without transgressing the standards, and still earn huge profits. The government refuses to adopt alternative test methods to detect adulteration accurately, such as the fingerprinting of fuel samples. Shockingly, while the country endures huge losses and public health is compromised on account of this illegal trade, the union ministry of petroleum and natural gas has weakened the existing penalties for the crime of adulteration. The earlier penalty of Rs 1,00,000 and the suspension of sales and supplies of all products for 45 days for the first offence of adulteration has been lowered to Rs 20,000 and a suspension of supplies for 30 days. Oil companies are not accountable for the quality of fuel at the retail end. Accountability is broken across the fuel supply chain. When caught, it is the transporter or the retailer who is hauled up, not the oil company. Strict liability must be imposed on oil companies for them to take ultimate responsibility for the quality of fuel they supply. This is possible by ensuring independent inspections, testing and audit of retail outlets and a public broadcast of the results to influence consumer preferences for retail outlets.

PHYSIOGRAPHY OF WATER

ndia is a land of many rivers and mountains. Its geographical area of about 329 MHa is criss-crossed by a large number of small and big rivers, some of them figuring amongst the mighty rivers of the world. The rivers and mountains have a greater significance in the history of Indian cultural development, religious and spiritual life. It may not be an exaggeration to say that the rivers are the heart and soul of Indian life. India is a union of States with a federal set up. Politically, the country is divided into 28 States and 7 Union Territories. A major p a r t o f I n d i a ’s p o p u l a t i o n o f 1,027,015,247 (2001 census) is rural and agriculturally oriented for whom the rivers are the source of their prosperity. Physiography Physiographically, India may be divided into seven well defined regions. These are: The Northern Mountains, comprising the mighty Himalayan ranges The Great Plains traversed by the Indus and Ganga Brahmaputra river systems. As much as one third of this lies in the arid zone of western Rajasthan. The remaining area is mostly fertile plains; The Central Highlands, consisting of a wide belt of hills running east-west starting from Aravalli ranges in the west and terminating in a steep escarpment in the east. The area lies between the Great Plains and the Deccan Plateau; The Peninsular Plateaus comprising the Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, North Deccan Plateau, South Deccan Plateau and Eastern Plateau; The East Coast, a belt of land of about 100-130 km wide, bordering the Bay of Bengal land lying to the east of the Eastern Ghats; The West Coast, a narrow belt of land of about 10-25 km wide, bordering the Arabian Sea and lying to the west of the Western Ghats, and; The islands, comprising the coral islands of Lakshadeep in Arabian Sea and Andaman and Nicobar Islands of the Bay of Bengal. Climate The presence of the great mountain mass formed by the Himalayas and its spurs on the North and of the ocean on the South are the two major influences operating on the climate of India. The first poses an impenetrable barrier to the influence of cold winds from central Asia, and gives the sub-continent the elements of tropical type of climate. The second, which is the

I

Daily

source of cool moisture-laden winds reaching India, gives it the elements of the oceanic type of climate. India has a very great diversity and variety of climate and an even greater variety of weather conditions. The climate ranges from continental to oceanic, from extremes of heat to extremes of cold, from extreme aridity and negligible rainfall to excessive humidity and torrential rainfall. It is, therefore, necessary to avoid any generalisation as to the prevalence of any particular kind of climate, not only over the country as a whole but over major areas in it. The climatic condition influences to a great extent the water resources utilisation of the country. Rainfall Rainfall in India is dependent in differing degrees on the South-West and NorthEast monsoons, on shallow cyclonic depressions and disturbances and on violent local storms which form regions where cool humid winds the sea meet hot dry winds from the land and occasionally reach cyclonic dimension. Most of the rainfall in India takes place under the influence of South West monsoon between June to September except in Tamil Nadu where it is under the influence of North-East monsoon during October and November. The rainfall in India shows great variations, unequal seasonal distribution, still more unequal geographical distribution and the frequent departures from the normal. It generally exceeds 1000 mm in areas to the East of Longitude 78 degree. It extends to 2500 mm along almost the entire West Coast and Western Ghats and over most of Assam and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. On the West of the line joining Porbandar to Delhi and thence to Ferozpur the rainfall diminishes rapidly from 500 mm to less than 150 mm in the extreme west. The Peninsula has large areas of rainfall less than 600 mm with pockets of even 500 mm. The estimate of area average rainfall is subjective depending on the method adopted. Therefore, estimates of local rainfall over the country obtained by employing other techniques may differ, especially in a vast country like India. Temperature The variations in temperature are also marked over the Indian sub-continent. During the winter seasons from November to February, due to the effect of continental winds over most of the

country, the temperature decreases from South to North. The mean maximum temperature during the coldest months of December and January varies from 29 degree centigrade in some part of the peninsula to about 18 degree centigrade in the North, whereas the mean minimum varies from about 24 degree centigrade in the extreme South to below 5 degree centigrade in the North. From March to May is usually a period of continuous and rapid rise of temperature. The highest temperature occurs in North India, particularly in the desert regions of the North-West where the maximum may exceed 48 degree centigrade. With the advent of South West Monsoon in June, there is a rapid fall in the maximum temperature in the central portions of the country. The temperature is almost uniform over the area covering two thirds of the country which gets good rain. In August, there is a marked fall in temperature when the monsoon retreat from North India in September. In North-West India, in the month of November, the mean maximum temperature is below 38 degree centigrade and the mean minimum below 10 degree centigrade. In the extreme North, temperature drops below freezing point. Agro-Climatic Zones The Planning Commission after examining the earlier studies on the regionalisation of the agricultural economy has recommended that agricultural planning be done on the basis of agroclimatic regions. For resource development, the country has been broadly divided into fifteen agricultural regions based on agroclimatic features, particularly soil type, climate including temperature and rainfall and its variation and water resources availability - Western Himalayan division, Eastern Himalayan division, Lower Gangetic plain region, Middle Gangetic plain region, Upper Gangetic plain region, Trans-Gangetic plain region, Eastern plateau and hill region, Central plateau and hill region, Western plateau and hill region, Southern plateau and hill region, East coast plain and hill region, West coast plain and hill region, Gujarat plain and hill region, Western plain and hill region and Island region. Rivers India is blessed with many rivers. Twelve of them are classified as major

rivers whose total catchment area is 252.8 million hectare (M.Ha). Of the major rivers, the Ganga - Brahmaputra Meghana system is the biggest with catchment area of about 110 M.Ha which is more than 43 percent of the catchment area of all the major rivers in the country. The other major rivers with catchment area more than 10 M.Ha are Indus (32.1 M.Ha.), Godavari (31.3 M.Ha.), Krishna, (25.9 M.Ha.) and Mahanadi (14.2 M.Ha). The catchment area of medium rivers is about 25 M.Ha and Subernarekha with (1.9 M.Ha.) catchment area is the largest river among the medium rivers in the country. Water Bodies Inland Water resources of the country are classified as rivers and canals; reservoirs; tanks & ponds; beels, oxbow lakes, derelict water; and brackish water. Other than rivers and canals, total water bodies cover all area of about 7 M.Ha. Of the rivers and canals, Uttar Pradesh occupies the first place with the total length of rivers and canals as 31.2 thousand km, which is about 17 percent of the total length of rivers and canals in the country. Other States following Uttar Pradesh are Jammu & Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh. Among the remaining forms of the inland water resources, tanks and ponds have maximum area (2.9 M.Ha.) followed by reservoirs (2.1 M.Ha.). Most of the area under tanks and ponds lies in Southern States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. These States along with West Bengal, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, account for 62 percent of total area under tanks and ponds in the country. As far as reservoirs are concerned, major States like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh account for larger portion of area under reservoirs. More than 77 percent of area under beels, oxbow, lakes and derelict water lies in the States of Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and Assam. Orissa ranks first as regards the total area of brackish water and is followed by Gujarat, Kerala and West Bengal. The total area of inland water resources is, thus, unevenly distributed over the country with five States namely Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka and West Bengal accounting for more than half of the country’s inland water bodies.

TRANS FATTY ACIDS: HARMFUL EFFECTS ON HUMAN HEALTH

ndia is undergoing rapid dietary transition. High economic growth has resulted in a burgeoning middle-class having greater access to commercially available foods, including fried and baked food items. Most of these foods contain high amounts of Trans Fatty Acids (TFAs), particularly if cooked in vanaspati (partially hydrogenated vegetable oils) which is often preferred for its low cost and longer shelf life. TFAs can adversely affect choleste rol levels, predispose the individual to diabetes, coronary heart disease and may also affect many of his body organs. Trans fatty acids or Trans fats are the most harmful type of fats which can have much more adverse effects on our body than any other dietary constituent. These fats are largely produced artificially but a small amount also occurs naturally thus in our diet, these may be present as Artificial TFAs an d/ or Natural TFAs. Artificial TFAs are formed when hydrogen is made to react with the oil to produce fats resembling pure ghee/butter. In our diet the major sources of artificial TFAs are the partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (PHVO)/vanaspati/ margarine while the natural TFAs are present in meats and dairy products, though in small amounts. TFAs pose a h igher risk of heart disease than saturated fats. While saturated fats raise total cholesterol levels, TFAs not only raise total cholesterol levels but also reduce the good cholesterol (HDL), which helps to protect us against heart disease. Trans fats consumption increases the risk of developing heart

disease and stroke. It is also associated with a higher risk of developing obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, infertility, certain types of cancers and can also lead to compromised fetal development causing harm to the yet to be born baby. Despite their harmful effect the reason

fried by using Vanaspati/Margarine contain TFA. These include: Cakes and Pastries; Patty, Rusk; Fried Aloo Chaat , AlooTikki (prepared in ‘Vanaspati’), Sweets (Mithai) (prepared in ‘Vanaspati’), Cookies / biscuits, French fries, Potato chips, Bhatura, Samosa, Parantha, etc.

Further, these are time or re-using the same oil for frying. comparatively far lower in cost and thus So also avoiding the use of ready to use (instant) mixes for preparing foods as add to profit/saving. Since their TFA content if indicated. If a label partially hydrogenated vegetable fat says “0” trans fat, it can still contain 0.5 (Vanaspati/Margarine) is rather high in grams trans fats per serving or less. TFA, all food items prepared, baked or While some developing countries have

laid down norms for TFA content of food, India has yet to pass/implement the regulation regarding the TFA containing fats or the TFA content of commercially prepared food items. Therefore, the responsibility lies with th e consumers to safeguard their interest. Harmful Effects of Trans Fats on Human Health Studies across the world indicate that: • TFA raise the VLDL, LDL-c, Triglyceride, Lp (a) lipoprotein and Free fatty acid levels on the other hand it lowers the LDL-c particle size and HDL-c levels. All these contribute to raising the risk of heart diseases. • Intake of partially hydrog enated vegetable oils contributes to the risk of myocardial infarction • TFA promotes systemic inflammation which increases the C-reactive protein leading to thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), diabetes, and sudden death due to heart failure. • TFA causes endothelial dysfunction (by increasing circulating bio-markers including soluble inter cellular adhesion molecule1, soluble vascular-cell adhesion molecule1 and E-selectin) which is a key step in the development of atherosclerosis • TFA have been found to increase insulin resistance and seem to have a unique cardio-metabolic imprint that is linked to insulin-resistance and metabolic-syndrome pathways. • Consumption of trans-unsaturated fatty acids has shown to increase the risk for ovulatory infertility. • TFA compromises fetal growth and development.

Spicy food and the explosive effect Low wages could lead to hypertension

Indians love their spices. But did you know that excessively spicy food can lead to all sorts of digestion issues? We spoke to Dr. S K Thakur, Gastroenterologist from Moolchand Medcity, New Delhi. He explains, "Spices are added to our food to improve the taste. However, once they reach the digestive tract they may cause irritation to the stomach's mucosal lining. Spices increase the acid secretion and reduce the strength of the gastritis mucosal barrier." "Overindulgence of spicy food may cause various stomach ailments. The

main reason behind these problems is the presence of high acidic content in spicy food. Although spices provide a number of vitamins and nutrients that are present in abundance, too much of these nutrients can be harmful too," he adds. Following are the ailments caused by extra spices in everyday food: Acid reflux: Spices are basically a combination of acids. When too much of these acids are introduced into the stomach, which already has its own acidic contents, it starts damaging the walls of the stomach. Acute gastritis: It is caused due to inflammation of the gastric mucosa, the membrane that lines the stomach. Many people suffer occasional, mild bouts of gastritis, which are often passed off as simple indigestion. Acute gastritis is generally characterized by symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, fever, diarrhea, headache accompanied by bleeding in vomiting or passed in the stool.

Gastric ulcer: Spicy food can cause ulcers in the sensitive mucosal lining or in the small intestine, called the duodenum (duodenal ulcer), or either in the esophagus (esophageal ulcer). Gastric ulcers are painful causing burning stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and weight loss. Insomnia: Spicy food raises the body temperature, which may trigger insomnia thus, it is advisable to avoid spicy food at dinner. Loss of appetite: Spicy food is safe for consumption when taken in moderate amounts. One may eat spicy food 3-4 times a week. Spicy food lovers should take care of the following: -Spices should only be taken in main meals -Avoid combination of fried oily and spicy food as it can increase acid secretion -Avoid having spicy food in late night meals -Drink milk in order to neutralize acid secreted by spicy food If you are experiencing digestion issues due to spicy food, then take antacids one hour after the meal and before bedtime.

Workers earning the lowest wages have a higher risk of hypertension than those who receive handsome salaries, a new study suggests. The correlation between wages and hypertension was especially strong among women and persons between the ages of 25 to 44. "We were surprised that low wages were such a strong risk factor for two populations not typically associated with hypertension, which is more often linked with being older and male," J. Paul Leigh, senior author of the study and professor of public health sciences at UC Davis said. "Our outcome shows that women and younger employees working at the lowest pay scales should be screened regularly for hypertension as well," Leigh said. The study is believed to be the first to isolate the role of wages in hypertension, which occurs when the force of circulating blood against artery walls is too high. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hypertension affects approximately 1 in 3 adults in the US and costs more than 90 billion dollars each year in health-

care services, medications and missed work days. It also is a (SES) and hypertension, determining the specific reason for that association has been difficult, according to Leigh. Other researchers have focused on factors such as occupation, job strain, education and insurance

coverage, with unclear results. Leigh's study was the first to focus on wages and hypertension. "By isolating a direct and fundamental aspect of work that people greatly value, we were able to shed light on the relationship between SES and circulatory health," Leigh said.

Drinking tea: Health benefits of different types of tea

Indian’s love their strong chai, but today there are wide varieties of tea in the market besides our masala and ginger chais. We have heard claims about green tea being good for weight loss and chamomile tea reducing stress, but what are the other kinds of teas and what are their health benefit claims? We take a look at the flourishing tea market, its vast and interesting varieties and the health benefits of different kinds of tea available to us today.

How to brew oolong tea:

- Bring water to a boil and use this water to rinse and heat up the tea cups. - Add the oolong leaves to the tea pot and add boiling water to it. - Cover the tea pot for max three minutes. - Serve the tea while it’s hot. - Tip: You can reuse the leaves a couple of times too Health benefits of oolong tea: This tea is partially fermented and is fast catching up as a weight loss remedy. Besides this, oolong tea is beneficial for lowering bad cholesterol, healthy for type 2 diabetics, patients with heart diseases, reduces high blood pressure, prevents tooth decay and improves your skin thanks to antioxidants. The research on these claims are in the preliminary stages, so there is no hard hitting evidence to prove these facts. Some brief research results (keep in mind that these are inconclusive): -Oolong tea blocked oxidation by 50% over 15 days. -Primary research suggests that oolong tea increases metabolism, burns fat and blocks fat absorption. But the extent is not yet clear. -Research says that this tea reduces cholesterol and increases plasma adiponectin levels which saves you from the epidemic of obesity. -When it comes to skin disease like eczema, a study reveals that if you drink one liter of oolong tea, your skin will show moderate improvement

after a month. -Another study claims that oolong tea prevents the formation of enzymes that cause ‘plaque’ on your teeth.

How to brew peppermint tea:

- Take fresh sprig of peppermint, use only the leaves and make them into small bits. - Let dry for 24 hours in the sun, making the leaves crispy. - In a vessel, bring the water to boil and add two tablespoons of peppermint tea. - Let it boil for 20 minutes and add a twig of fresh mint to the water. - Strain the leaves in a pot and add sugar to taste. Health benefits of peppermint tea: Don’t get flustered by peppermint tea, it simply means pudina tea, essentially tea brewed from pudina. This is herbal tea and peppermint has medicinal properties for an upset tummy, or so the claims suggest. A point to note, peppermint oil has been clinically tested and it has shown relaxation effects on gastrointestinal tissue. The tests also mention that peppermint oil builds immunity and is beneficial for cancer patients for its ‘chemopreventive potential’. Peppermint oil can also be used as an antioxidant, based on research.

How to brew Parsley tea:

- Boil the water and remove it from the heat - Chop some parsley leaves and add to the hot water. - Let steep in the water for 20 minutes. - Strain the water and you do not have to add sugar to it. - If you want to warm it up again, let it heat up but do not let it boil. Health Benefits of parsley tea: Parsley has two major properties: antioxidants and vitamin C.

Hence parsley can reduce free radicals giving you ageless skin and it can reduce inflammation that is a symptom for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. So far research hasn’t linked parsley tea to these health benefits. There is no way of asserting how much parsley tea is needed to reduce osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and skin damage.

How to brew Chamomile tea:

- In a pot, add Chamomile tea flowers and then

this tea increases amino acids that relieve muscle spasms. This could be the answer for fighting the common cold especially during the monsoon.

How to brew Matcha tea:

- The tea powder should be at room temperature. - In a bowl, add a teaspoon of matcha tea and add one fourth cup of hot water. - Whisk the tea and try to dissolve the matcha. One rule while whisking, move the whisk in a vertical direction without touching the bottom. - When it turns light green, it is ready to drink. Health benefits of Matcha tea: This is a Japanese tradition, where the monks used matcha tea to relax, but that’s not all. Believers claim that matcha tea is a good antioxidant, in fact - even as good as dark chocolate. -It is also believed that matcha has the ability to fight carcinogens or cancer causing cells. Matcha tea also claims to reduce bad cholesterol and weight loss. -It is also a detoxifying agent that is rich in fiber.

How to brew Rooibos tea:

add hot water. - Let steep for three minutes. - Strain the flowers and add honey or a few drops of lime juice. Health benefits of Chamomile tea: We may be aware that Chamomile tea has magical properties that relax and calm you. But did you know chamomile tea can reduce menstrual cramps and control your cold? However, researchers are still trying to determine these health benefits of chamomile tea. One research reveals that chamomile tea increases immunity of the body while the other says that

- In a pot add, Rooibos tea and then add hot water. - Let steep for three minutes. - Strain the flowers and add honey or a few drops of lime juice to it. Health benefits of Rooibos tea: Rooiboos tea is gaining popularity and is becoming a hot favourite with fitness enthusiast. The claims are almost alike with other teas; rooiboos tea also claims to slow down aging, builds immunity, relaxes the muscles, is excellent for skin ailments and reduces cramps. Apparently, red rooiboos tea is a good source for calcium,

To be healthy, exercise with your pet!

Making your four-legged pal exercise can help him avoid health woes. A pet can also get you into shape, say experts. If you have been a couch potato so far, with little or no inclination to exercise, time you got yourself a four-legged pal. New research determines that children from dog-owning families exercise more than those without pooches. The American Journal of Public Health published a study saying kids with dogs spend an average of 325 minutes doing physical activity per day, 11 more than those without dogs. The same rule could apply for adults. It was also found that dogs can be very good motivators to get people moving. Fitness experts have their say: A study mentions how dog walkers meet cardio vascular exercise requirement at least thrice a week. "Though walking with the dog can be rejuvenating, it's not really a full-cardio workout. However, if you're running

with the dog it can reach the fat-burning range, which you need. What is advisable is to keep a heart rate monitor with you which shows if you are in the target heart rate zone," says fitness expert Althea Shah. What seems to be a distinct advantage of this outdoor workout is that while gym-goers exercise inside an air-conditioned gym, dog walkers are able to enjoy fresh air. Agrees Shah. "That would be true; you feel invigorated as it's the outdoors," she adds. A large difference between the gym and being outside is that for most people a gym workout starts to feel like a chore and dog-walking can be far more enjoyable. Says fitness expert Jivesh Shetty, "What happens is everybody doesn't have the same goals and passions, soon an 'X' amount of gym hours coupled with needing to eat correctly, becomes a strain. A pet can be a good start-up to the gym; they are playful so you don't realise the amount of time you spend

with them. It's also relaxing, a lot of workouts are stressful in the beginning, but being with a pet is like being with family. Plus, you can't always have a partner, or too many friends, so a dog can help. Evenings and early mornings give you a good hour of training. All said, in Mumbai there are only a few places where you can run with your dog. For building muscle, you need weight training." Avoid these woes: When pets gain flab, they increase the risk of developing arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, behavioral problems and cancer. Exercise is said to improve a dog's bone an joint health. 3 Ways to have fun with your pet 1) Play hide 'n' seek: Imagine you're playing throw and fetch but this time don't throw anything into the distance. Just show your pooch his or

her favorite toy. Hide it and tell him to go fetch it. 2) Follow your pace: Show your pet cat or dog or his favourite food or toy and then start walking with it. As he or she follows you, quicken the pace. 3) Create the 'dogstacle' course: Set up a realistic obstacle course made of empty boxers, small tubs and piled up pillows and make your dog jump over these. You can get creative and set up your own obstacle course alongside and have him play follow the leader.

The right way to cleanse your face

There is a right way to facial cleansing so your skin not only removes the dirt it accumulates but also helps keep clean Gone are the days when cleaning the face was just about splashing water and using a face wash. With so many new beauty techniques making it up for reads, and en number of drugstore products put to use for beautification, there's now a step-by-step to cleansing ones face. Here's a mini to-do list to washing your face just right.1. Take off your makeup: Yes, this is rule number one. Washing a caked up face does no good. Use a makeup remover, baby oil or an oil-based cream to take off that makeup from your face.2. Choosing the right product for your skin: It is important that you use the right products depending on your skin type. If you have normal

skin, you have the liberty to experiment with any product, but for a sensitive skin, use something that is gentle and does not bring about any breakouts. 3. Take time: Moisten your face with lukewarm wa-

ter (nothing too warm, or else it can make the skin dry and also harm the skin). Then use a cleanser that suits your skin type to clean the face. Take cleanser on your fingers and rub gently in a circular motion all over your face, going your way up and into the hairline and also down past your jawline.4. Wash it right: Washing the face more than once or twice can lead to irritation of the skin. If you're someone who sweats majorly, then maybe you can wash your face when you feel too much grime accumulation, also when you feel uncomfortable (then again don't overdo it). Even after a rigorous workout session, washing the face is recommended. Otherwise, no matter what skin type you be, stick to washing the face just twice, in the morning and before you sleep at night.

therefore it strengthens your bones. Rooiboos tea can also reduce stress, something most of us need at the end of the day.

How to brew Hibiscus tea:

- Add the shoeflower or hibiscus to boiling water and add a cinnamon stick. If you want stronger flavour add the flower to the water but do not let it steep for more than 20 minutes. It will turn bitter. - Add honey and a few drops of lime to it. Health benefits of Hibiscus tea: What makes this tea different? Well, it is made from flowers and it’s a growing trend. When it comes to health benefits, there’s not much that separates this tea from the rest. This tea also claims to reduce blood pressure, lowers cholesterol and reduces sugar absorption in the body. How to brew Pu erh tea: There are two ways to brew this pu erh tea: The Western way and the Chinese way. The Western method involves the same steps as brewing hibiscus tea. While the Chinese method of brewing involves several steps from rinsing the leaves with hot water to steeping the leaves in a particular temperature. Healh benefits of Pu erh tea: In China, this is known as medicinal tea, but it is apparently a good hangover cure as well. Pu erh tea also claims to increase metabolism, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, improve digestion and detoxify the body.

How to brew Barley tea:

- You need roasted barley - Boil the water with the barley seeds. - Strain the water and add few drops of lime Health benefits of Barley tea: This will remind you of barley water, which is a refreshing drink in the summer. But in Japan, barley tea is called mugacho. The biggest difference is that this tea can improve the flow of the blood. Along with other health benefits, barley tea is an antioxidant and reduces tooth decay.

How to motivate yourself to exercise at home Here are a few ways you can pep yourself up when you feel too bored or lazy to follow a fitness regime. If you thought working out at home is boring, monotonous and unexciting, give it a thought. While it might be pouring outside or you simply wake up late and miss out on your morning walk — working out at home is the best option. You just need to motivate and discipline yourself to exercise at home. Ways to motivate yourself Start with a new workout gear Working out at home doesn't mean you can simply wear your pyjamas and start exercising. This will make you feel more lethargic. Invest in a good pair of workout gear. Start with a comfortable pair of shorts, tops and shoes to boost your confidence. Play some peppy number Says Namita Jain, wellness expert, "Put on some good music before you start working out, preferably something latest that is on your mind. This will keep your spirits high and will help you to workout better." Get a fitness DVD When you are working out at home, you do not have a personal trainer to help you with your exercise. Thus get a fitness DVD — like a one for yoga, aerobics or some other dance form. It gives you a feeling of working out in a gym or a fitness studio and you do not feel like you are working out alone. Choose the right workout Working out at home also requires you to choose the right kind of workout that will keep you motivated to exercise. If you are the kind of person who gets bored walking on the treadmill or cycling at home, go in for pilates, yoga or zumba! Set up a routine Working out at home requires a lot of discipline. The best thing about exercising at home is that you can workout any time during the

day. Set yourself a time — are you more energetic in the mornings or do you like exercising after work? Spare yourself an hour every day and keep to it. You can also set a reminder on your mobile so that you do not miss out on your workout. Stock your fridge with healthy eats Says Samir Purohit, fitness expert, "Make sure that you keep only healthy edibles in your fridge. Store some juices, soya milk etc that will keep you motivated to workout." Hang a 'reach your goal' list Make sure you hang a note on your wall reminding you of the upcoming events that you need to exercise for — like a friend's wedding, reunion or a date. Put up pictures of your slimmer self Says Althea Shah, fitness expert, "Putting up pictures when you were fitter or slimmer will motivate you to workout." Find old pictures where you are wearing skinny jeans or pin up pictures of fitter celebrities on your fridge. Ask a friend to join you When you are working out at home, it tends to become very monotonous over a period of time. Call your best friend and ask him/ her to drop by at your place for a workout every morning or after working hours. This will keep you going and you will feel motivated to shed those extra kilos.

Advani refuses to go down quietly, says BJP needs allies

NEW DELHI: Veteran L K Advani on Friday once again drew attention to fault lines in the BJP by invoking party founder Syama Prasad Mookerji to stress the relevance of coalitions in the wake of BJP’s bitter break up with Janata Dal (U). “His idea is relevant in today’s context as well... It is important that the party make friends,” Advani said four days after JD(U) stormed out of the NDA protesting the elevation of Gujarat CM Narendra Modi as BJP’s campaign committee chairperson. Mookerji had recognized the need to maintain relations with other parties if Congress’s hegemony was to be successfully challenged, Advani said. Although stressing the importance of allies is quite unremarkable, political circles read the comment to mean Advani remains unreconciled to Modi’s rise and likely projection as BJP’s prime ministerial hopeful. Read in the context of Advani reportedly blaming Modi’s appointment as campaign head for JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar’s exit from the National Democratic Front, the former deputy PM’s re-

marks were loaded with political innuendo. “The need for allies was recognized by S P Mookerji years back as he believed that relations with other parties opposed to Congress were important in order to defeat the Congress party and even today allies are important to ensure the defeat of the Congress,” Advani told his largely saffron audience. Advani’s assertion, made in

the presence of BJP president Rajnath Singh and senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu, is significant as it flies against the sentiment in the party rank and file which has rallied around Modi. The BJP veteran seems intent on pursuing his opposition to Modi despite his meeting with Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday yielding no significant as-

rescue team has reached Gaurikund and has begun to shift pilgrims stranded in high altitudes to lower areas.Sonprayag: Rescue teams yet to reach pilgrims stuck near Kedarnath The Indian Army, ITBP and NDRF have made temporary ropeways over the merging point of Songanga and Mandakini to rescue pedestrian pilgrims coming from Kedarnath. Commandant of NDRF’s eighth Battalion Manish Kumar who is supervising rescue operations, which started on Thursday in Sonprayag through temporary ropeways, said so far over 2500 pilgrims have been evacuated. He said the process is taking time because the ropes

DMK announces Rs 25 lakh to PM’s National Relief Fund

The DMK today announced Rs 25 lakh aid to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the people of rain-ravaged Uttarakhand. Party Chief M Karunanidhi also appealed to DMK’s elected MPs and MLAs to contribute a month’s salary to the relief fund.He said it was “heartening” to see stranded pilgrims from the state being rescued and brought back by Central and state governments. In a statement here, Karunanidhi recalled that the Prime Minister had appealed for contributions from the public on account of the magnitude of the tragedy in Uttarakhand even as the PM had allocated Rs 1000 crore towards relief activities. He said Congress President Sonia Gandhi had also directed her party MPs to donate their one month salary. “I wish to announce that a sum of Rs 25 lakh will be provided on behalf of DMK to relief fund being collected by the Central government. Besides, I request DMK MPs and MLAs to contribute their one month’s salary,” he said. DMK has 18 Lok Sabha MPs, seven members in Rajya Sabha and 23 MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

PM Manmohan Singh, John Kerry meet to yield very little

surance apart from an undefined promise that issues raised by Advani will be discussed. It is quite clear that RSS is solidly backing Modi and all that remains between his being formally named BJP’s prime ministerial candidate for 2014 is another round of consultations that will aim at getting Advani on board. If Advani doesn’t alter his views -- it seems he is unlikely to - BJP and Sangh Parivar intend to go ahead with anointing Modi as the saffron challenger for prime ministership. Naidu said exclusion of contributions by anti-Congress leaders like S P Mookerji and Bal Gangadhar Tilak from the syllabus of schools was serving vested interests and said BJP will introduce the history of these leaders in textbooks so that young people are aware of their contributions. Rajnath Singh, while reiterating Mookerji’s stand on Kashmir, demanded that the government devise a national relief and rehabilitation policy for Hindus and Sikhs who are fleeing from Pakistan to India in the face of oppression. If possible, they should even get Indian citizenship, he said.

NEW DELHI: Five years ago John Kerry, then a senator, helped persuade Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to pursue a civil nuclear agreement with the United States despite considerable political risks, and on Monday the two will meet again. Nothing so momentous is likely to emerge from this year’s meeting between the prime minister and Kerry, who is arriving here Sunday in his new role as secretary of state. The two men’s shared history symbolizes a relationship between India and the United States that has grown so close in recent years that there are few surprises. “Nothing dramatic is happening or is going to happen,” said Naresh Chandra, a former ambassador to the United States from India. “Things are boringly stable.” Still, the two men have a lot to talk about on such issues as the future of Afghanistan, China’s growing assertiveness in the region, investment rules for foreigners in India and pending immigration legislation in the United States, officials said. Whether the famously taciturn Singh gets a word in edgewise with the loquacious Kerry is uncertain. The conversation is likely

have to be changed after every couple of rounds due to presence of rough rocks in the area. Sonprayag looks like a haunted town in the wake of the tragedy. Once the Mandakini river flew here 100 metres down but now it has turned into a heap of sand and boulders, a pilgrim said.Dozens of hotels, lodges and shops located here have turned into tons of debris lying all over the place. The trek for Kedranath used to begin from Gaurikund which lies 5 km beyond Sonprayag, but now about 4 km long stretch between the two places has been badly damaged by the landslides triggered by the deluge.

KHATRA: In a balancing act after massive protests in Kolkata over rise in rapes in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today had sharp words for intellectuals who had deserted her, while appealing for help to raise social awareness against such crimes. “Some are talking big ... some are saying that parivartan (change) has taken place because of them. Some are claiming that I became the Chief Minister only because of them,” she said addressing a panchayat election meeting in Bankura district. “I had to fight for 34 years. This did not happen in a day. None should forget this. Parivartan took place because of Ma, Mati, Manush,” she

said. Referring to her 26-day fast over the Singur land issue, she asked how many of the intellectuals who are now up in arms against her government were present then, while acknowledging that noted writer and Jnanpith awardee Mahasweta Devi was beside her. Mahasweta Devi, who has been her supporter but also been critical of her government on various issues, did not take part in yesterday’s protest by intellectuals and prominent personalities. “These kind of incidents are very bad ... As I have the responsibility, you too have it ... I request those who are connected with literature, drama, films and other fields and (news tv)

Uttarakhand floods a national tragedy, says Narendra Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the natural calamity that struck Uttarakhand has the proportions of a national tragedy. “In this hour of crisis, the whole country stands in solidarity with the hill state. We will do all we can to lend a helping hand to the state government to deal with this crisis,” Modi told reporters soon after he arrived The BJP leader arrived here to undertake a tour of the affected areas in rain-hit Uttarakhand where the famed Char Dhams have borne the brunt of devastation, especially Kedarnath which has turned virtually into a ghost town with an unspecified number of bodies lying under tonnes of debris in the temple premises and many strewn all over. Uttarakhand floods a national tragedy, says Narendra Modi Modi said he will meet Uttarakhand

folded after the gushing waters left behind a trail of death and destruction. A conclusive figure can be arrived at only after the slush and debris under which bodies could be buried are cleared, he said. Officials said 123 bodies were recovered from the Kedarnath temple complex raising the official death toll to 680. In a briefing for foreign reporters here, a top Indian official noted that India had more military exercises with the United States than with any other nation.

PMK to boycott RS poll, fight gets tough for Kanimozhi

CHENNAI: Putting DMK in a fix, the PMK on Friday announced it would boycott the June 27 Rajya Sabha poll for six seats from Tamil Nadu. A resolution to this effect was passed unanimously at the PMK’s executive council meeting held in the city, a party statement said. The PMK’s decision comes as a huge disappointment for the DMK, which was banking on its support to send Kanimozhi to the Upper House for the second consecutive term. With the fight now getting tougher for Kanimozhi, the DMK desperately needs the backing of the five Congress MLAs. Stating that “some political parties” had approached it for support, the PMK resolution said its executive members were “firm” about an earlier decision that there should be no alliance with either of the Dravidian parties in future polls. “It was unanimously decided that the party should boycott the RS poll,” the resolution said. For the first time in several years, the RS election from Tamil Nadu is witnessing a contest for a seat and Congress support will prove to be the clincher.

While tomorrow the weather may stabilise, those engaged in the operations are worried about the rain forecast for Monday and Tuesday that could hamper their work. “The death toll is likely to be around 1,000,” chief minister Vijay Bahuguna told reporters here as the Himalayan tragedy un-

to be livelier when Kerry meets Salman Khurshid, India’s foreign minister. Khurshid’s recent elevation to foreign minister is a sign of how much the relationship between the United States and India has deepened. He lived for years in the United States and is known to favor better ties between the two giants. Ashley J. Tellis, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, said that the relationship between Kerry and Khurshid could be crucial. “Far more gets done in bilateral ties when people invest in personal relationships,” Tellis said. Many pilgrims have already died of hunger and many are searching for the dead bodies of their kin in the jungles over Gaurikund, Bhairavchatti, Junglechatti and Garurchatti, said several pilgrims, who somehow managed to reach Sonprayag from Kedarnath on foot. ple each, the air force chipped in to move the rest.He said all central and state government agencies were working in full coordination, a point he made hours after home minister Sushilkumar Shinde said there seemed to have been some lack of coordination. Former home secretary V K Duggal, who is also a member of the National Disaster Management Authority, has been appointed to coordinate the work of various agencies in rescue and relief operations. A senior state government official said 123 bodies have been recovered from Kedarnath temple complex where a team of experts went today to a take count of bodies strewn all over the place. More bodies may come to the surface in the next couple of days as the slush and debris lying in the area is removed, said the official

who did not want to be quoted. About 1000 more pilgrims stranded in Rambara and Junglechatti areas en route to Kedarnath shrine in Rudraprayag district were sighted by security forces. Tewari said in Junglechatti, a point of concern, there were 400-500 people. In Kedarnath, there were 70 to 80 still there. 100 people were still left in Hemkund Sahib while in Badrinath there were 8,000 people. At his press conference, the chief minister said Kedarnath has been completely evacuated. Tewari said food packets have been given in Junglechatti and Gauchar, where two helicopters will make sorties tomorrow. The National Disaster Relief force rescued 143 people from Gaurikund, one of the higher reaches on way to Kedarnath. There are 189 sadhus in Gaurikund who have refused to move out.

Congress sources said its Tamil Nadu leaders were divided on the issue of backing the DMK. “Union ministers Jayanthi Natarajan, V Narayanasamy and a few others are reportedly lobbying hard for the DMK. Union minister P Chidambaram and former Union minister E V K S Elangovan are inclined to support the DMDK. Union minister G K Vasan is in a dilemma while his loyalist and TNCC chief B S Gnanadesikan prefers to back the DMDK,” said a senior Congress MP. “But, our national leaders, including AICC president Sonia Gandhi, are of the view that the DMK would be a stronger ally for the Lok Sabha polls,” he said. The DMK, which has 23 MLAs in the state assembly, and the DMDK, which has 22 legislators (seven of

the total 29 have rebelled against the party leadership), are locked in a battle for a seat. While the two smaller parties, the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi and the Puthiya Tamizhagam, have each offered support of their two MLAs, the DMK still needed the PMK’s backing. “In the case of the two candidates getting equal number of votes, we will consider the second preference votes and declare the winner. But if the both the candidates are still tied, then we will go for the lot system,” chief electoral officer Praveen Kumar told TOI.
