Srinagar, June 15: Members of the Jammu and Kashmir Bar Association today decided against participating in the inauguration of the State Judicial Academic Complex here tomorrow saying that the function is "politically motivated". "The establishment of the State Judicial Academic Complex is a welcome step. But in view of the political overtones of the function, which is to be presided by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the Bar Association feels handicapped (about joining) in," the association said in a statement here following a meeting of its executive members. The said complex is to be inaugurated by the Chief Justice of India. The association said that the independence of the judiciary was "at stake in the hands of the present coalition government" in the state. There is a "denial of effective justice to the people" and discrimination against Kashmiris at all levels, the association alleged. Referring to the recent selection of judicial officers in the subordinate judiciary, the association said that, "out of 38 selectees only seven are from Kashmir valley" and alleged that attempts were made to even defeat those appointments. "The overall representation of Kashmiris in the judiciary has come down to 25 per cent at present, which reveals the sinister design to weed out the Kashmiri Muslim representation in the judiciary," See Bar on Pg. 11

for softening of borders for mitigating the problems of people and giving boost to trade and commerce. He recalled his meeting with former premier of Pakistan Zulfkar Ali Bhutto in Pakistan and said that he wanted to know why Shere-Kashmir was so keen for opening of the Muzaffarabad Road. “My reply to Mr Bhuttoo was that Shere-Kashmir wanted the people of two countries to have wider interactions and to see for themselves change taking place in various sectors”. Srinagar, June 15:
Jammu and Kashmir unit of CPI(M) today said there is a need for introspection to find the reasons behind "the emerging tendency" of educated youth joining militancy in the Valley. "Denial to a free political space, failure to administer justice to the families of victims of violence are a few important aspects which seriously demand an introspection at all levels before finding out reasons behind the emerging tendency of educated youth joining militant ranks in Jammu and Kashmir," state secretary of CPI(M) M Y Tarigami said here. Tarigami said the people in Kashmir are living in a "suffocating atmosphere" where even "peaceful dissent is not tolerated." Almost all channels of communication have been blocked and means of protest is being suppressed ruthlessly. What is more worrying is that the youth is being targeted mercilessly," he said. "And yet if someone, does not understand or wilfully chooses to
ignore the real cause and shuts one's eyes to its inevitable consequences, the overall situation is bound to deteriorate rather than coming to normal," he said while addressing a Round Table meeting organised by the Delhi-based Centre for Policy Analysis here. People of Kashmir hope that the political and democratic opinion across the country is mobilised for providing justice to the people, he said. "Whichever, political party comes in power in Delhi hardly matters for the people of Kashmir. What the people of Kashmir hope is that the political and democratic opinion across the country is mobilised for providing justice to the people. The democratic forces of the country need to come out of slumber before it is too late," he said. Tarigami asked why the criminal investigations in "mostly unprovoked incidents of violence in 2010 in which over 110 youth were killed" have not been concluded. "Three years have passed and See CPI(M) on Pg. 11
A Delhi-based civil society group on Saturday appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to reach out to the rape victims of Kunanposhpora during his scheduled visit to Jammu and Kashmir later this month. "The gang-rape of women in Kunanposhpora village of north Kashmir's Kupwara district is a blot on the face of the democracy." "Prime Minister should reach out to the victims by announcing reopening of the case and taking up the matter with state government and Defence and Home ministries," CPI(M) leader Mohammad Saleem, who is part of the delegation of Centre for Policy Analysis (CPA), told reporters here. The delegation visited Kunanposhpora yesterday and met the victims of alleged gang-rape by an Army unit during an antimilitant operation in 1991. "We will take up the matter with Prime Minister
and hope he announces something during his visit so that a sense of justice is felt by the victims," Saleem said. It is unfortunate that the Jammu and Kashmir government has failed to do anything in the matter despite a recommendation by the State Human Rights Commission, he said. Meanwhile, member of National Integration Council John Dayal said government should not act like nothing has happened and should reopen the case by constituting a special investigations team moni-
tored by judiciary and not police. He also demanded adequate compensation on the basis of a national model "like in the case of Delhi gang rape of a medical student". Former IAS officer Harsh Mander said it is shameful that police have filed a closure report without taking any action against anyone. laws, Centre for Policy Analysis (CPA) said that a special investigating team monitored by Supreme Court of India should be set up to probe the cases involving rapes and deaths at the hands of security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir. CPA eight member team headed by eminent journalist and civil society activist, Seema Mustafa said that over the last several decades, Kashmir has had a history strewn violence and killings, bad governance and general apathy from the successive governments at the centre. She said old issues of justice and rights have not been resolved and new ones are added. “This has bred deep anger and alienation amongst the Kashmiri people, manifested in stone pelting incidents in 2010.” She said there is a need to sensitize people of India about the grave issue of Jammu and Kashmir. “CPA has taken various initiatives in this regard and it has already sensitized the students of various universities of India. Today if any Kashmir gets arrested in New Delhi, all the students in New Delhi resent it and demand his immediate release. It is just because we sensitized students about Kashmir issue. It is not easy to talk about Kashmir in wake of strong opposition in New Delhi,” she said. Seema Mustafa said that the death of 112 boys during 2010 mass agitation at the hands of security forces and the mass arrests of young people that continue, have virtually helped seal the alienation and has given the slogan of ‘Azadi’ popular and widespread support. Former Director General Border Security Force, E.N.Rammohan said that there is a high level of anger and frustration in the fourth generation to be born in conflict in Kashmir. “The young people have lost hope and are helpless in their anger. There is apprehension that this could be utilized by vested interests into an armed movement,” he said. Dr Balachandra Kango from CPI said that Kashmir Valley has a large number of widows and half widows whose husbands have died or have disappeared over the years. “There are hundreds of women who have been sexually molested and have lost their children in the violence. Writer and social worker Harsh Mander said that the level of stress related trauma is very high, with the CPA delegation itself witnessing the hysteria as women from different parts of Kashmir narrated their woeful tales. Sehba Farooqi said that CPA is putting all its efforts to make the people of India aware about the sufferings of Kashmiri people. Professor Jawahar Lal Nehru University Kamal Chenoy said that it is shameful on party of security personnel to indulge in atrocities and rapes. “A soldier stands for the protection of life but Kashmir has its own story to tell where soldiers tarnish the chastity of women,” he said.

He said the initiatives taken after 2010 unrest which, included eight-point recommendations, announced by the Central government also proved to be a half-hearted exercise. "Law and order being the state subject, the state cabinet can meet and assess the situation. Fatal accidents
F
our young and precious lives were lost in a tragic accident in Pahalgam the other day. The tragedy of the families can only be imagined. But this is nothing new in Kashmir where militant violence is taking less lives now and the roads have gone killer. Daily press releases issued by the Police Media Cell in Srinagar is enough to gauge the intensity of the situation. Precious lives are being lost on daily basis. Police reports about road accidents present a horrible scenario; and almost every week we see newspaper headlines screaming about casualties being inflicted by road accidents across the Kashmir valley. Despite the recurrence of accidents, mostly because of bad roads and lack of proper traffic regulation measures, the government thinks nothing beyond the announcement of token relief for mishap victims. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) survey sponsored by India’s home ministry says Kashmir topped the list of “high death prone accidental areas” in 2011. The study also reveals that any accident in Jammu and Kashmir state has 64 percent chances of being “death prone”, the worst among Indian states on the basis of percentage of fatalities. The Sunder Committee headed by India’s former transport secretary S. Sunder has proposed higher penalties for offences like crossing the speed limit, driving without a license, use of a mobile phone while driving, and not wearing seat belts. The Committee has recommended fines ranging from 1,000 rupees to 5000 rupees plus imprisonment. At present traffic regulators either let such offenders go or impose a nominal fine of 100 rupees. This is despite the fact that traffic authorities blame rash and negligent driving for most deaths on Kashmir’s roads. Over speeding is the main cause of traffic accidents in the valley. Most drivers don’t care about the rules. And the authorities have failed to impose them. Some years back, the Traffic Department had planned to introduce traffic interceptor vans to be equipped with cameras and radar. But the proposal didn’t receive a positive response and has shelved. The fatality of roads has been ignored, willfully or unintentionally for quite some time now. Only a huge incident involving the death of dozens attracts attention. The response remains limited to statements and condolence messages, and then everything settles in and the vehicles go on killing people as usual. The media are also to blame for highlighting only accidents which result in a heavy death toll, and remaining silent about the causes of the frequent incidents. Killer roads and the vehicles used for public transport are equally responsible for the huge casualties. The first culprits are the roads. There is hardly any road which can be termed perfectly fit and safe for driving. Because of our terrain, most of our roads are located in remote mountain areas. One would not mind the rough driving surface with potholes, but the there can be no compromise on safety at steep turns over deep ravines. The next culprits are the vehicles used for public transportation. Most of these have outlived their utility and there is absolutely no physical check on the fitness of these vehicles. In a number of cases, accidents have occurred due to failure of brakes or the steering mechanism. Not only are these vehicles a direct danger to human life, they are also the greatest source of pollution. The situation is very grim in the hinterland, where no one is available to regulate traffic. Over speeding vehicles particularly Sumos have created a terror in rural Kashmir. Most of the accidents are caused by rash and senseless drivers.

Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK)
I
n a vast country like India, the need for ensuring a healthy and dynamic future for a large populace and creating a developed society, agile and able to compete with the rest of the world, is of paramount importance. The dream of such a healthy and developed society can be achieved through concerted efforts and initiatives undertaken in a systematic manner at all levels. Equitable child health, care and early detection and treatment can be the most pragmatic initiative, or rather solution, at this jun cture! The ‘Child Health Screening and Early Intervention Services’ Programme under National Rural Health Mission initiated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, therefore, aims at early detection and management of the 4Ds prevalent in children. These are Defects at Birth, Diseases in Children, Deficiency conditions and Developmental Delays including Disabilities. Health screening of children is a known intervention under the School Health Programme. It is now being expanded to cover all children from birth to 18 years of age. The Programme has been initiated as significant progress has already been made in reducing child mortality under the National Rural Health Mission. However, further gains can be achieved by early detection and management of conditions in all age groups. Out of every 100 babies born in this country annually, 6 to 7 have a birth defect. In Indian context, this would translate to 1.7 million birth defects annually and would account for 9.6 per cent of all newborn deaths. Various nutritional deficiencies are affecting the preschool children range from 4 percent to 70 percent. Developmental delays are common in early childhood affecting at least 10 percent of the children. These delays, if not intervened timely, may lead to permanent disabilities with regard to cognition, hearing and vision. There are also groups of diseases which are very common in children e.g., dental caries, otitis media, rheumatic heart disease and reactive airways diseases which can be cured if detected early. It is understood that early intervention and management can prevent these conditions to progress into more severe and debilitating forms, thereby reducing hospitalisation and resulting in improved school attendance. The ‘Child Health Screening and Early Intervention Services’ will also translate into economic benefits in the long run. Timely intervention would not only halt the condition to deteriorate but would also reduce the out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditure of the poor and the marginalised population in the country. Additionally, the Child Health Screening and Early Intervention Services will also provide country-wide epidemiological data on the 4 Ds. Such a data is expected to hold relevance for future planning of area specific services. Target Group The services aim to cover all children of 0-6 years of age group in rural areas and urban slums, in addition to older children up to 18 years of age enrolled in classes 1st to 12th in Government and Government-aided schools. It is expected that these services will reach and benefit about 27 Crore children in a phased manner. Magnitude of Birth Defects, Deficiencies, Diseases, Developmental Delays and Disabilities in Children Defects at Birth With a large birth cohort of almost 26 million per year, India would account for the largest share of birth defects in the world. This would translate to an estimated 1.7 million babies born with birth defects annually. In the study conducted by National Neonatology Forum, congenital malformations were the second commonest cause (9.9%) of mortality among stillbirths and the fourth commonest cause (9.6%) of neonatal mortality and that accounted for 4 per cent of under-five mortality. Deficiencies Evidence suggests that almost half of children under age five years (48%) are chronically malnourished. In numbers it would mean that more than 47 million children under five years are stunted, 43 percent of children under five years are underweight for their age and about 20 percent of children younger than five years of age are wasted. Over 6 percent of children less than five years of age suffer from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). However, recent survey conducted in 100 worst affected districts showed SAM prevalence of 3
percent in children less than five years of age. Anaemia prevalence has been reported as high as 70 percent amongst under five children l argely due to iron deficiency. The situation has virtually remained unchanged over the past decade. During pre-school years, children continue to suffer from adverse effects of anaemia, malnutrition and developmental disabilities, which ultimately also impact their performance in the school. Diseases As reported in different surveys, the prevalence of dental caries varies between 50-60 percent among Indian school children. Rheumatic heart disease is reported at 1.5 per thousand among school children in the age group of 5-9 years and 0.13 to 1.1 per thousand among 10-14 years. The median prevalence of reactive air way disease including asthma among children is reported to be 4.75 percent. Developmental Delays and Disabilities Globally, 200 million children do not reach their developmental potential in the first five years because of poverty, poor health, nutrition and lack of early stimulation. The prevalence of early childhood stunting and the number of people livi ng in absolute poverty could be used as proxy indicators of poor development in under five children. Health Conditions Identified for Screening Child Health Screening and Early Intervention Services under NRHM
ASHAs will mobilise caregivers of children to attend the local Anganwadi Centers for screening by the dedicated Mobile Health Team. In order to ensure improved and enhanced outcome of the screening programme by Mobile Health Teams, ASHAs would particularly mobilise the children with low birth weight, underweight and children from households known to have any chronic illness (e.g., tuberculosis, HIV,haemoglobinopathy etc.). Line lists maintained by the ANMs and AWWs would also be used to mobilise children. Screening of Children Aged 6 Weeks till 6 Years Attending Anganwadi Centers Children in the age groups six weeks to six years of age will be examined in the Anganwadi Centers by the dedicated Mobile Health Teams. Screening of Children Enrolled in Government and Government aided schools For children in the age groups 6 to 18 years, who will be screened in Government and Government -aided schools, the Block will be the hub of activity for the programme. At least three dedicated Mobile Health Teams in each Block will be engaged to conduct screening of children. Villages within the jurisdiction of the Block would be distributed amongst the mobile health teams. The number of teams may vary depending on the number of Anganwadi Centers, difficult-to-reach areas and children enrolled in the schools. The screening of children in the Anganwadi

envisage to cover 30 identified health conditions for early detection and free treatment and management. Based on the high prevalence of diseases like hypothyroidism, sickle cell anaemia and beta thalassemia in certain geographical pockets of some States/UTs, and availability of testing and specialized support facilities, these States and UTs may incorporate them as part of this initiative. Implementation Mechanisms The Operational Guidelines outline the following mechanism to reach all the target groups of children for health screening For new born: Facility-based newborn screening at public health facilities, by existing health manpower & Community based newborn screening at home through ASHAs for newborn till 6 weeks of age during home visitation. For children 6 weeks to 6 years: Anganwadi Center based screening by the dedicated Mobile Health Teams For children 6 years to 18 years: Government and Government aided school based screening by dedicated Mobile Health Teams. Facility based newborn screening: This includes screening of birth defects in institutional deliveries at public health facilities, especially at the designated delivery points by ANMs, Medical Officers/ Gynaecologists. Existing health service providers at all designated delivery points will be trained to detect, register report and refer birth defects to the District Early Intervention Centers in District Hospitals. Community Based Newborn Screening (age 0-6 weeks) for Birth Defect Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) during home visits for newborn care will use the opportunity to screen the babies born at home and the institutions till six weeks of age. ASHAs will be trained with simple tools for detecting gross birth defects. Further
Centers would be conducted at least twice a year and at least once a year for school children to begin with. There is also a provision for engaging a Block Programme Manager for providing logistic support and for monitoring the entire health screening process. The Block Programme Manager is also expected to ensure referral support and manage compilation of the data. The Block teams will work under the overall guidance and supervision of the CHC Medical Officer. The Block Programme Manager will chalk out a detailed screening plan for all the three teams in consultation with schools, Anganwadi Centers and CHC Medical Officer. District Early Intervention Center (DEIC) An Early Intervention Center will be established at the District Hospital. The purpose of Early Intervention Center is to provide referral support to children detected with health conditions during health screening. A team consisting of Paediatrician, Medical officer, Staff Nurses, Paramedics will be engaged to provide services. There is also a provision for engaging a manager who would carry out mapping of tertiary care facilities in Government institutions for ensuring adequate referral support. The funds will be provided under NRHM for management at the tertiary level at the rates fixed by the State Governments in consultation with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Children and students presumptively diagnosed to have a disease/ deficiency/disability/ defect and who require conf irmatory tests or further examination will be referred to the designated tertiary level public sector health facilities through the DEICs. The DEIC would promptly respond to and manage all issues related t o developmental delays, hearing defects, vision impairment, neuro-motor disorders, speech and language delay, autism and cognitive impairment. Beside this, the team at DEICs will also
be involved in newborn screening at the District level. This Center would have the basic facilities to conduct tests for hearing, vision, neurolo gical tests and behavioural assessment. The States/UTs would conduct mapping to identify public health institutions through collaborative partners for provision of specialized tests and services. Top 6 fats that lower cholesterol
Often given a bad name, fats can be a good addition to anyone's daily diet. In fact, one should never, completely, cut good fats out from everyday meal plans as they are very essential for your body. While some bad fats may pose grave risk of cardiovascular diseases, others may shield your heart. An important source of essential fatty acids and concentrated energy, fats are full of fatsoluble vitamins, they assist in cooking too and also keep hunger pangs at bay. Today, Delhi-based Diet Consultant Munisha Bhanot tells us about the top 6 fats that help in lowering cholesterol. Sip red wine, instead of cocktails. Red, blue, green cocktails look tempting, but these drinks are full of calories. So, if you are health conscious, then avoid cocktails. Instead, you can sip red wine because it is full of antioxidants, which are helpful in preventing different types of cancers. And an even red wine has saponins, which help in lowering bad cholesterol LDL. But intake of red wine should be limited. The American Heart Association recommends that you limit your daily intake to two glasses (for men) or one glass (for women). Best oils for low-cholesterol cooking. All the oils and fats have some good qualities for our health. So we should not stick to one type of oil or fat for cooking. We should follow rule of rotation of oils. For example, in one month you can use sunflower oil and in the next month you can use mustard oil. Or you can even use different types of oils in your meals like one vegetable in sesame oil and another in mustard oil. The low cholesterol cooking oils are olive, canola, sesame oils and mustard oil. Good quality oil is also found in avocados and avocado oil, nuts and their oils, corn, cottonseed,
and safflower oils; sunflower seeds and sunflower oil; flaxseed and flaxseed oil; soybeans and soybean oil; tub margarine and soft spreads; and seafood. Monounsaturated fats are the healthiest fats. There are two types of cholesterol - one type of cholesterol clogs our arteries, it is known as bad cholesterol or LDL and other type helps in removing these clogs, it is known as good cholesterol or HDL. Monounsaturated fats decrease your total blood cholesterol but maintain your HDL (good) cholesterol. Monounsaturated fats, therefore, help lower the risk of heart diseases. Olive oil has 75% of monounsaturated fat. Examples of monounsaturated fats are macadamia nuts (80% of fat is monounsaturated), avocados (71%), almonds (70%), canola oil (59%), and peanuts and peanut oil (46%). Other sources are almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, natural peanut butter, pecans, pistachios, sesame oil and sesame seeds. Polyunsaturated fats may also be somewhat healthy. A polyunsaturated fat has good cholesterol but it decreases your total blood cholesterol by lowering both the LDL (bad)
cholesterol and the HDL (good) cholesterol. Because of this reason we should use them in moderation. The good sources of polyunsaturated fats can be found in corn oil, mayonnaise, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flaxseed oil, hempseed, hempseed oil, soybean oil, and pistachios. Liquid plant oils should be your best bet for daily use. It is general tendency to use butter or ghee for cooking and baking. But butter and ghee are high sources of bad cholesterol or LDL. They increase risk of heart diseases by clogging your arteries. So, to prevent this we should use vegetable oils like soya oil, sesame oil, canola, olive, mustard oil etc. for cooking and baking. These oils have high level of good cholesterol HDL and lower our LDL levels. Meat fats also help in lowering cholesterol. However, it is important that one reduces the fat content of meat. There are many quick ways to reduce the fat content of meat. First, always buy lean cuts of meat. Before cooking, remove and cut the all visible fats for example remove the skin from chicken because there
20 Best workout snacks

To elaborate, they give you slow release energy and are therefore, great for long workouts or if your workout is an hour or more away. One standard issue red apple gives you approximately 60 calories. Energy gels: Carbohydrate-based snacks designed mostly for endurance events, energy gels are often used by runners, cyclists and mountaineers. These come in single snack servings and since they are meant for athletes who cover long distances, are usually high on calories for the average person. Yogurt parfait: Perfect for light to moderate workouts recovery, yogurt parfaits are just a French way of saying yogurt mixed with chopped fresh fruits. One 60 gms bowl of skimmed yogurt with one whole fruit will cost you about 100 calories. Honey or cinnamon can be great natural sweeteners at just 10-30 more calories. Energy bars: If you have no time to keep the kitchen stocked with natural workout foods, rely on energy bars. However, be weary of the fat, carb and sugar content in these snacks. The lower and non-existent these three are, the better it is. Calories differ from brand to brand. For instance a standard granola milk bar will be approxi-
mately 120 calories. Eggs and toast: Great as pre or post workout snacks, one or two eggs on toast will give you the perfect carb+protein fuel or recovery benefits. Two full eggs on one toast will give you about 220 calories. Vegetable omelet: Calorieefficient, energy-packed, and full of protein - a vegetable omelet might be just what your fitness routine is missing. Skip the egg yolks to make it even more performance-friendly. A simple omelet with a carrot and onion in with 1-2 whites will give you approximately 90 calories. Oats: A small bowl (5080gms) of quick cooking oats with fresh fruits like bananas, apples or pears, makes for a good snack worth about 250 calories. This needs to be prepared with water. Dark chocolate: A great antioxidant, dark chocolate is considered good for recovery after an especially grueling workout. Buy dark chocolate that has low to no saturated fats (esp. Tran's fats) and fewer artificial ingredients. A 100gms cube is a good enough quantity. Calorie count defers from brand to brand, so check the label before buying. Chocolate milk: Recent studies have hailed chocolate milk for its postworkout recovery inducing properties. Drink a glass (about 250ml) of chocolate flavored milk for a 150 calorie-worth post-workout snack. Smoothies: Yogurt smoothies help replenish your body after a workout
and are great for comfort. Rely on healthy skimmed yogurt and skimmed milk, fresh fruit smoothies and you'll be richer by approximately 150 calories. Protein shakes: If you get all your protein requirement (from .8 to 2gms per kilo, depending on workout intensity) from natural foods, without eating in excess of your body's daily needs, then you're golden. If not, you need a little supplementation. Remember that the trick to the right protein shake is research and expert consultation. Ask your doctor and fitness trainer for advice. One scoop will be anything between 30 to 90 calories, depending on contents. You could also look at raw eggs and dairy natural protein shakes, if so inclined. Egg whites: Eggs are quintessential fitness foods. Eat them before or after a workout and you'll be a happy fitness enthusiast. A couple of egg whites before and a couple or more after (depending on workout intensity), will serve you 40-100 calories of extreme goodness. Avocado: Infamous as being high fat fruits, avocados deserve to be let off the hook. While it's true that one whole avocado will give you 250-300 calories (except California avocados, which are smaller varieties), if your workout is heavy, these will be calories well spent. On the other hand, split it into two servings, and you've still got a great snack of about 120 calories. Almonds and walnuts: Full
of good fat richness and energy powerhouses, almonds and walnuts (about 7-12 almonds and 2-4 walnuts) can be good energy suppliers. Look to get about 200 calories from here. Dried dates stuffed with almonds/walnuts: A nice little variation for those who eat dried dates often. Simply pit the dried date, and stuff with whole almonds or walnuts, or slivers. Each almond or walnut stuffed date will give you about 30-50 calories. Dried dates: Similar to figs with respect to calorie counts (approximately 100-150 for about 4), dried dates are performance packed. Eat these if your workout calls for every bit of energy in your body and eat them just before the workout. Dried figs: A great source of iron and roughage, dried figs are old age's best kept secret. Don't wait to hit your 50s to discover this miracle food. 2-4 dried figs are worth about 100-150 calories. Apple slices topped with peanut butter: For those who're avoiding processed cereals, spread the peanut butter over a few apple slices. Extra crunch and flavour guaranteed. This will cost you no more than 120 calories (lesser if it's just 1-2 apple slices). A slice of bread with peanut butter: Peanut butter packs an extra punch with its creamy nut butter and omega goodness. Spread a spoonful on a slice of bread and you've got a great preworkout snack of about 150 calories.

NCP gears up for 2014 general elections
Mixed response to TRS bandh against Telangana ‘clampdown’
Appoints new Maharashtra unit chief and working president; aims to win 15 Lok Sabha seats, 100 assembly seats
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a key ally of the United Progressive Alliance at the Centre, has started preparing for the Lok Sabha elections due next year. The party, which had dropped six ministers on Tuesday, on Saturday appointed former minister Bhaskar Jadhav chief of its Maharashtra unit. It also appointed firebrand legislator Jitendra Avad as working president, a new post. NCP has set an ambitious target of increasing its tally of Lok Sabha seats from eight to 15. It also aims to increase its count of assembly seats from 62 to 100. NCP is expected to contest 22 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats and 117 of the 288 assembly seats. The party has come up with a time-bound plan to bring representatives of Dalits and backward classes, minorities, women and youth, under its fold, ahead of the Lok Sabha and assembly elections. The appointments of Jadhav and Avad are part of the party’s plan to promote young leaders, especially as state units of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Shiv Sena and the Maha-
rashtra Navnirman Sena are headed by youth leaders. Earlier, Jadhav had drawn criticism for hosting a lavish wedding in February, a time when many parts of the state were under severe drought. Avad is known to be tracking the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case.NCP has formed a 12-member core group comprising former ministers, former state party chiefs and senior women leaders. Each
sponsibility of progressive parties, including the NCP, had increased. Pawar’s close confidant and Union Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel cautioned the NCP’s standing in state and national politics wouldn’t improve unless it won more seats. He underlined the need for collective efforts and recalled the party had taken a beating due to overconfidence and the misjudgement of certain leaders in the past. NCP’s moves come in the wake of a possible split between the BJP and the JD(U), as well as efforts by various regional parties to form a federal front.Recent prepoll surveys have predicted a poor performance by the NCP in the Lok Sabha elections. The surveys showed NCP’s tally of Lok Sabha seats might fall from eight to four. The expected fall was attributed to the alleged involvement of NCP ministers in various scams, rising differences between Sharad Pawar and his nephew and state deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and the widening gap between leaders and the party’s rank and file.
member of the core group would be assigned some Lok Sabha and assembly seats and he/she would be responsible for these constituencies. The state party chief, Mangal Pandey reiterated that the BJP wanted the alliance to continue, but warned that it can’t be dictated to. “We
would never be the first ones to break the alliance. It is up to the JD(U) to clarify if the alliance is intact or not,” he said, adding, “Alliances don’t work on dictation or force”. He was referring to the hardline stance adopted by the JD(U) on Narendra Modi.JD(U), which shares power with the BJP in Bihar, is the second-largest constituent of the saffron-party led NDA. If the alliance breaks, Nitish will fall four seats short of majority in the Bihar Assembly. However, efforts have begun in earnest to find allies. An independent MLA claimed that the JD(U) had approached him for support.

to his indirect projection as the next Chief Minister of Delhi. Incumbent Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has been at the helm of affairs for the past 15 years, setting a record of sorts in independent India where a woman has served has headed the state for three consecutive terms. Sometime back, there was talk of Ms Dikshit being made a minister at the Centre.

Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit misleading people on land issue, says Vijay Goel
New Delhi: Delhi BJP on Friday accused Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit of misleading the rural people on the issue of extension of Lal Dora areas and repealing of Section 81 of the Delhi Land Reforms Act. Since the elections are just a few months ahead, she is once again making such misleading announcements. It seems she has become a Chief Minister, who just makes announcements and does nothing for the people,” Goel said. The government has not even provided basic facilities to villages and now even if they would begin the work then

is a small piece of DNA inherited mostly unchanged from a mother to her children. Tests showed that Ms Kewark had an extremely rare form of mtDNA, that has only been found in 14 other people, 13 in India and one in Nepal. Those involved in the project believe all the evidence they have gathered shows that her genetic heritage through her motherline was Indian. And as writer Patrick French, author of an exhaustive book on India, pointed out, it means the secondin-line to the throne is 1/256th Indian. The company’s research revealed that Eliza Kewark was the housekeeper of Prince William’s fifth great-grandfather, Theodore Forbes, a Scottish merchant who was born in 1788 and worked for the East India Company in Surat. The city is today responsible for cutting and polishing 90 cent of the world’s diamonds. The company said it was believed Ms Kewark was Armenian, because her name was similar to the Armenian name Kevork and
because letters to her from Theodore have been found which contain Armenian script. She also signed her name in Armenian script. That suggested more than a degree of Armenian cultural heritage and the raised the strong possibility that her father may have been of Armenian descent. But the company said it was sure her genetic heritage through her motherline is Indian. Alistair Moffat of BritainsDNA researched some of the historical background to the study and found that Theodore Forbes was the third son of a landowning family. When it became clear he not going to inherit land, he made contact with the East India Company and travelled to India. “That’s where he met Eliza and he employed her as his housekeeper. It wasn’t uncommon for young British men to have relationships with Indian women,” he told the Press Association. Dr Wilson raised the prospect that Prince William may have relatives in India.
Monsoon rains ahead of schedule: MeT office
New Delhi: India’s monsoon rains are a week ahead of schedule, powering across two-thirds of the country by June 14 and heavier than normal, but the weather office is sticking to its forecast for average rains during the entire four-month period.Heavier than normal rains can trigger flooding but at this stage in the June to September season, they spur planting of crops. India’s biggest concern is drought during a monsoon, with rains crucial for the 55 percent of farmland without irrigation. The monsoon should cover the whole of India before the usual mid-July timing and their distribution over major crop-growing regions should be fairly even, BP Yadav, a director at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), said on Friday.
Rainfall is expected to be at 101 percent of the long-term average in July and 96 percent in August, two key months for the planting and maturing of crops. The strong start t the June to September monsoon boosts prospects of robust farm output. That could help the economy and hold down inflation, a critical concern for the coalition government as it readies for a round of state polls this year and a national election by May 2014. India is one of the world’s biggest producers and consumers of rice, sugar and other food agricultural commodities. A strong monsoon will underpin government confidence harvests will be ample to cover the extra grains needed for its plans for a $24 billion welfare scheme to give cheap food to more of its poor.
